Liz Roche Company Yes and Yes

May 4–6

Performed by Mufutau Yusuf, Sarah Cerneaux, Grace Cuny, and Toon Theunissen

Tickets and info: irishartscenter.org

Yes and Yes takes its title from the final episode of Joyce’s Ulysses , which both begins and ends with a “yes”: “…yes I said yes I will Yes,” the famous last words of the novel, exclaimed by Molly Bloom. The dance journeys through Ulysses, exploring its sensuality, absurdity, release, and resignation in movement with four extraordinary dancers and through film, sound, and design.

Yes and Yes by Liz Roche was originally co-produced by Solas Nua in Washington, D.C. and Liz Roche Company, in partnership with Cork Opera House. Commissioned by Solas Nua. Presented in association with the James Joyce Society.

“Like Joyce did with words, Roche plays with the infinite choreographic possibilities of movement ... A wonderful, dreamlike experience”

The 8th traces Ireland’s 35-year struggle to dismantle the 8th Amendment—a constitutional ban on abortion. We hear from voices on both sides of the debate, but the film’s primary focus is on the dynamic female leaders of the pro-choice campaign, following the veteran campaigner Ailbhe Smyth and selfdescribed glitter activist Andrea Horan as they chart a bold strategy of grassroots activism and engineer the impossible. This dramatic story is underscored by a vivid exploration of the wrenching failures that led to this defining moment in Irish history.

If You Only Walk Long Enough

Leanne McDonagh, Ellie Berry, and Edy Fung

Curated by Moran Been-noon

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where—” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.

“—so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”

—from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, chapter VI

January 13–July 23

Artist talk: Monday, March 27 at 6pm

Exhibition hours:

Monday–Wednesday: 5:30pm–9pm (January 17–March 9; April 10–June 1)

Saturday: 1pm–5pm (January 28–July 22, except April 8 and May 27)

Tickets and info: irishartscenter.org

Alice next arrives somewhere, just as the Cheshire cat predicted, but was she the same Alice when she got there? This exhibition seeks to explore travel, travelers, Travellers, journeys, and destinations, and ask how they change each other. Artists Leanne McDonagh, Ellie Berry, and Edy Fung bring to the exhibition a perception of travel that’s tied to their experiences, and each offers the audience a moment of meditation on how travel can influence them and their idea of “somewhere.”

Very Old Man With Enormous Wings

A Dan Colley and Riverbank Arts Centre production

Inspired by the work of Gabriel García Márquez

THE ARTS REVIEW

April 28–30

Directed by Dan Colley

Featuring Manus Halligan and Karen McCartney

More info: irishartscenter.org

In a kitchen, in a theatre, two storytellers and their audience find something remarkable—a very old man with enormous wings. The wise neighbor woman tells us he’s an angel. The priest says he’s an imposter. Pilgrims flock to see him. They leave with something different from what they expected.

Adapted from Gabriel García Márquez’s “Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes,” Dan Colley and company bring to life the beautiful, strange, emotional richness of this classic piece of magic realism through stunning performances in the art of puppetry. Recommended for ages eight and up.

Our Commitment to Antiracism and Equity

Irish Arts Center stands with our BIPOC family, friends, and colleagues against racism, discrimination, and violence. We continue to work toward providing an environment in which the work of artists can help forge the common ground that brings us together, and where people of all backgrounds are welcome and equal. We seek to approach that mission with humility, and to listen and learn from those whose lived experience is different from our own.

About Irish Arts Center

Irish Arts Center, founded in 1972 and based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, is a home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds who share a passion or appreciation for the evolving arts and culture of contemporary Ireland and Irish America. We present, develop, and celebrate work from established and emerging artists and cultural practitioners, providing audiences with emotionally and intellectually engaging experiences in an environment of Irish hospitality. Steeped in grassroots traditions, we also provide community education programs and access to the arts for people of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2021, through a historic partnership of the people of Ireland and New York, Irish Arts Center completed construction on a fully-funded $60MM state-of-the-art new facility to support this mission for the 21st century.
