Expanding Boundaries & This is How we Fly. That’s the name of the virtuosic, genrebusting ensemble of artists featured on the cover of this season’s brochure—making their U.S. debut with us in April—and it also perfectly captures our mood as we begin our spring 2015 season. Because together, we—the wonderful community of artists and audiences and supporters who are Irish Arts Center—are spreading our wings beyond our Hell’s Kitchen home, across the five boroughs of New York City and beyond.

Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) This spring, we expand our children’s programming as IAC and CMA come together to explore the creative world of Irish arts. See page 33 for details.

We’re soaring to new creative heights as we go, building exciting partnerships with some of the greatest innovators in Ireland and New York, united by a shared commitment to exciting, emotionally engaging work that projects the excellence and dynamism and diversity of contemporary Irish arts. So consider this your passport to fly with us on another exciting artistic journey. Buckle up!

Recent Events Collaboration and Cross-Cultural Conversations with BAM and Abrons Arts Center In our first-ever collaboration, we proudly joined forces with Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), one of the country’s foremost multidisciplinary cultural institutions for the contemporary performing arts, in presenting four exciting Irish theatre works as part of the 2014 Next Wave Festival: Olwen Fouéré’s astonishing riverrun, inspired by Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake; Samuel Beckett’s Embers, by Ireland’s great experimenters Pan Pan Theatre; actress Lisa Dwan’s extraordinary production of Beckett’s Not I, Footfalls, and Rockaby, with the Royal Court Theatre; and Landmark Productions’ Howie the Rookie, by Mark O’Rowe, starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Love/Hate), which earned five stars from Time Out New York and a rave review from The New York Times.

And in October 2014, we traveled downtown to the Obie-winning Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side to present Lippy, created by Bush Moukarzel and produced by Dead Centre. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called the play “a very smart, very chilly play... haunting...ingeniously choreographed...gorgeous.”

Muldoon’s Picnic Sell-Out First Season

In fall 2014, we launched Muldoon’s Picnic, a monthly residency with Pulitzer Prize-winning Northern Irish poet Paul Muldoon. Once a month, anchored by his band Wayside Shrines, Paul took Irish Arts Center audiences on a journey of words and music, with special guests from the world of arts, letters, and theatre, including Joyce Carol Oates, Nick Laird, Robert Pinsky, Stephen Rea, Zadie Smith, Tracy K. Smith, and more. The series will return this spring. See page 20 for details.

PoetryFest

Hundreds of New Yorkers came together for our sixth annual PoetryFest with poems from some of our best contemporary Irish and American poets, including Tara Bergin, Rita Ann Higgins, Peter Fallon, Adam Fitzgerald, Miriam Gamble, Matthea Harvey, Vona Groarke, Dave Lordan, Robert Pinsky, Gerald Stern, and Kevin Young.

Camille O’Sullivan In Residence

Singer Camille O’Sullivan stunned New York City audiences for nine unforgettable nights with her threepiece band and her profoundly intimate and magical interpretations of Nick Cave, Tom Waits, David Bowie, Radiohead, and more. Time Out New York’s Adam Feldman described the show as “one of the top five cabaret shows of the year. Spellbinding.”

A Special Performance from Sting at Spirit of Ireland Gala

IAC Honorary Co-Chairs Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne hosted Irish Arts Center’s annual Spirit of Ireland Gala in October 2014. Martin Hayes was awarded the Spirit of Ireland Award and honoree Robert J. McCann was awarded the Gala Award. The evening featured a very special performance from Sting, Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, and Thomas Bartlett. Photo Credits: Erin Baiano, Jose Miguel Jimenez, Patrick Redmond

The Man In The Woman’s Shoes was originally commissioned by the Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo with Sligo County Council Arts Service for the Bealtaine Festival in 2012 and last year toured to venues around Ireland.

“I think none of us is old, me heart has never been old ...” It’s October 1978, Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and cobbler Pat Farnon has “some business” to do in town. “Today is beginning to feel very special and I’ve no idea why.” The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat as he walks the five miles from his white cottage to town and back again. He meets unforgettable characters along the way, including water diviner Huby Patterson, GAA enthusiast extraordinaire Kitsy Rainey, big voiced Casimir Marshall, an array of farmers all named Gilmartin, and Kemp, a man whose idea of a good time is to direct traffic wherever he may find it. Pat may be an aging man but he has a boundless enthusiasm for life.

“ Take a bow for this

heart-warmingly unfashionable play.” - Evening Echo

“It’s half time, there’s a pipe band on the field and the smell of oranges all of a sudden—ah, this is the life!” Mikel Murfi (The Walworth Farce, Ballyturk) delivers a visionary and imaginative performance in this hilariously funny, tender and at times downright daft play that will leave you uplifted and in love with life again. Running Time: 70 minutes

Murfi has just starred opposite Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea in Ballyturk written and directed by Enda Walsh which played to sold-out houses in Galway, Dublin and at the National Theatre in London. He is a founding member of Barabbas Theatre Company and was last in New York when he directed Penelope by Enda Walsh at St. Ann’s Warehouse. His films include The Commitments, Guiltrip, The Butcher Boy, Ella Enchanted, Intermission and most recently Jimmy’s Hall directed by Ken Loach.

“A physical comedian, blessed with plastic features, and with the vocal range of a ventriloquist, Murfi makes sheep, pigs, dogs, and even bees, come to life.” - Irish Theatre Magazine

“An enchanting show… hilarious…One of the most delightful theatrical experiences I’ve had in a long time.” - Gay Byrne, RTÉ Lyric FM

Dylan Tighe with Carrie Erving Friday, February 6 | 8 pm “Brimming with tunes…an audacious and seriously intelligent suite of songs.” - The Irish Times

AS SEEN SXSW AT OUR SHOWCASE

Dublin singer-songwriter Dylan Tighe’s debut album Record was released in 2014 to widespread acclaim. The Sunday Times declared Dylan an “exquisite songwriter,” while RTÉ proclaimed the album “starkly brilliant” and “a deeply personal and deeply moving piece of work.” Tighe’s stage production based on songs from Record was described by the Irish Independent as proposing “a new theatrical form for a new way of thinking.” “The magic of Ponyhof (led by Carrie Erving) is both delicate and energetic, lighthearted while also quite deep, fresh yet undeniably familiar; think St. Vincent meets Bjork atop flourishing dance beats.” - Bushwick Daily Opening for Tighe, Carrie Erving presents an evening of songs that draw on her experience as a contemporary singer and songwriter, as well as her training in the traditional Irish seannós singing style from her studies at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in Limerick, Ireland. She recorded her first album in Germany, where she became a critically-acclaimed staple in the Berlin music scene. She currently lives in Brooklyn.

Ultan Conlon Thursday, March 26 | 8 pm “The most impressive Irish debut since Damien Rice’s O.” - The Evening Herald Galway-born singer Ultan Conlon wraps common themes and familiar situations around musical styles rooted deeply in traditional rock and roll, country and folk. His music has received extensive airplay in Ireland, the UK and Europe and is featured in the film Songs For Amy. He has opened for artists such as John Martyn, John Grant, Eddi Reader, Patty Griffin and Richard Hawley, and shared duets with both John Martyn and Glen Hansard. Love and regret, heartbreak and hope are presented candidly and engagingly through Ultan’s comforting, uncontrived vocal style.

Music SongLives showcases some of Ireland and North America’s most exciting contemporary songwriters, bringing the rich tradition of busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street and beyond to New York City.

Roesy with Peter Doran Friday, May 29 | 8 pm Best New Irish Act Nominee 2004 Meteor Music Awards “…impressive musical talent and overwhelming passion.” - Faster Louder Singer-songwriter Roesy—originally from Birr, Ireland, and now based in Australia—has shared the bill with international figures such as Bert Jansch, Paul Brady, Billy Bragg, John Martyn, Joan Armatrading, Shane MacGowan, and more. His songs are scattered with flecks of old Appalachian blues and country, and fits effortlessly between Paul Simon and Hank Williams, with the power of an extraordinary voice all his own. A true storyteller, his melodies are impossible to ignore or dismiss, and show a personal honesty that is refreshing and best experienced live. “Part Nick Drake, part David Gray—Outlines captures the spirit of a more considered life.” - Folk Radio UK

Opening for Roesy is Irish singer-songwriter Peter Doran from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. His fourth album, the self-produced Outlines has just been released to critical acclaim in Ireland. Peter’s combination of vocals and melody create a natural intimacy, one that makes the listener feel as though he is sharing his best kept secrets with them.

Erin McKeown and Peter Mulvey Thursday, June 11 | 8 pm “Her playing is so muscular, her arrangements so well-conceived that she succeeds brilliantly.” - Boston Globe. Erin McKeown is an internationally known musician, writer, and producer. With nine full-length albums, two EPs, and numerous soundtracks to her credit, she has spent the last 15 years crafting a powerful reputation and averaging over 200 nights onstage each year. McKeown’s career has been filled with many incredible highlights including collaborating with Ani DiFranco, appearances on Conan O’Brien, CBS Morning Show, Later with Jools Holland, NPR, and the BBC. In performance, the eclectic multi-instrumentalist is known for her compelling and energy-packed style that hangs onto every one of her strums. “Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores. A phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick fire, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style. A joy to see.” - The Irish Times Over the past 20 years, Irish-American Peter Mulvey has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician—immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and Americana stylings. He has relentlessly toured as a headliner and has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani DiFranco, and Indigo Girls. Mulvey has a rare ability to hold an audience’s attention and transport them, using wit, humor, and a subtle but sophisticated melodic and harmonic sensibility to gracefully introduce complex and provocative concepts and characters. Mick Moloney, Jimmy Keane and Robbie O’Connell Reunion Concert March 27-28 | 8 pm $25 member / $32 non-member Three Irish music legends make a triumphant return to New York City. Since 1984, singer, musician and folklorist Mick Moloney, vocalist Robbie O’Connell, and accordion virtuoso Jimmy Keane have been delighting audiences with their unique blend of Irish music and song, both traditional and contemporary. An evening with this trio is an experience that covers much musical ground and is not easily forgotten.

With each one regarded as the best in his field, the combination brings a great depth and range to their concerts. IAC Artistic Associate Mick Moloney has recorded or produced over 40 albums of traditional music and has formed two of the great bands of this generation: The Green Fields of America and Cherish the Ladies. Many regard Keane as the premiere exponent of traditional Irish music on the piano accordion. He was honored as the Male Musician of the Decade by Live Ireland and the Irish American News. O’Connell is an Irish singer and songwriter born in Waterford. A nephew of the Clancy Brothers, he began touring with them in 1977, and Eileen Ivers and Seamus Egan in the Green Fields of America.

Virtuoso musicianship is underscored with humor, and a sense of history is tempered by the reality of today’s social condition. Some of their songs will fill you with emotion, others will have you laughing outright; some of the melodies will haunt you for days, others will make you want to leap up dancing. However you react, one thing is certain, you will want more.

a reputation for their astounding virtuosity and vitality. The trio has toured the U.S. for three seasons (2012-2014) with Masters of Tradition, an acclaimed ensemble curated by fiddler Martin Hayes.

Music

Saturday, May 2 | 8 PM $24 member / $30 non-member Featuring Iarla Ó Lionáird, vocals and harmonium Ivan Goff, uillean pipes Cleek Schrey, Hardanger fiddle

Ghost Trio

Ghost Trio features three innovative musicians: sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, uilleann piper Ivan Goff and fiddler Cleek Schrey on Hardanger. The trio explores the ancient and transporting modal sounds of traditional Irish music: in the drones of dirges and laments, the spiritual songs of antique provenance and the joyful pairing of the pipes and the fiddle. All three musicians have delved into experimental musical worlds far from their points of origin: Ó Lionáird from the Irish-speaking region of Cork where he was a virtuoso singer as a young child and is considered by The Guardian to be one of the most dramatic voices in contemporary music; Dublin-born Goff, All Ireland champion, playing the pipes in traditional bands; and Virginian Schrey, from old-time American music. For one night only, indulge your passion for pipes, fiddles, and sean-nós singing at this atmospheric, inspiring and unforgettable performance.

“Pipes, Hardanger fiddle and harmonium coalesce to shape an atmospheric set that speaks more of the space and time inherent in traditional music than it does the momentum. And

what a welcome alternative take this is.” - The Irish Times

“The finest sean-nós singer to be found anywhere in these islands today.” - Hot Press on Iarla Ó Lionáird

Music April 23-25 | 8 PM $20 member / $24 non-member Featuring Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, fiddle & hardanger fiddle Seán Mac Erlaine, clarinets & electronics Nic Gareiss, percussive dance Petter Berndalen, drums & percussion A collaboration between fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and jazz clarinetist Seán Mac Erlaine already sounds an intriguing proposition, but throw in American hard shoe dancer Nic Gareiss and Swedish percussionist Petter Berndalen and the results are something quite special. The search for common ground between this eclectic quartet has yielded a rich crop of ideas and a debut album that sounds like nothing else. Individually, each member has carved out a reputation for not just mastering their chosen fields, but rising above, redefining and renewing the musical world they come from. A sublime Irish fiddler who’s not afraid to step outside convention; a thoughtful Dublin jazzman who has moved beyond the linear constraints of the genre; a sophisticated Appalachian hard shoe dancer stepping into the rhythmic foreground; and a lyrical Swedish percussionist redefining the melodic and sonic place of drums within the contours of traditional song. This is How we Fly play everything from Irish fiddle tunes to Appalachian folk and polskas from Berndalen’s native Sweden. Shot through with the exuberant, anarchic spirits of folk and jazz, this is traditional music as you’ve never heard it before.

“Barrett simply outwrites many of his peers with a chilling confidence that suggests there is far more beneath the surface than merely the viciously effective black humour.”-Eileen Battersby, The Irish Times

Our second season of Debut Voices kicks off with a reading from a major new talent in Irish literature, Colin Barrett. Barrett’s powerful debut collection, Young Skins, is a stunning introduction to a singular voice in contemporary fiction. These six short stories and one explosive novella evoke the youthful lives in a small town in rural Ireland, who make their own fun, live hard, and wear the scars of growing up with a crucible of menace and desire. Set for the most part in the fictional County Mayo town of Glanbeigh during contemporary post-boom Ireland, Young Skins offers an utterly unique reading experience and marks the appearance of an arresting and innovative new voice in Irish writing. Dance Presented in association with Myrtle Avenue Partnership as part of Black Artstory Month Saturday, February 7 | 3 pm-5 pm FREE At Ingersoll Community Center 177 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11201

“Dark…Intense…Mysterious… Blew me away.”-Mel B, NBC’s America’s Got Talent

Hammerstep In the late nineteenth century, Fort Greene— home to over half of Brooklyn’s African American population—became widely known as “Young Dublin’’ for the large Irish population that settled on what is now Myrtle Avenue. The stylistic and technical similarities of Irish step dance and American tap dance are a reflection of a century’s long crosscultural dialogue that is important to Fort Greene’s history.

Brooklyn-based critically acclaimed Hammerstep’s groundbreaking show integrates traditional Irish step, tap, and hip hop dance forms and presents them through cutting edge choreography, lights, and sound in a way that reinvents the dance show experience. Addressing contemporary social and political issues along the way, Hammerstep elevates dance to act as a platform for personal and collective empowerment and sparks social progression.

Following the performance, company members will discuss their new approach to Irish dance.

Trasatlantacha Maeve D’Arcy and Lisa O’Donnell February 2015-April 2015 Artist Talk & Reception Tuesday, February 3 | 6:30 pm FREE Gallery viewings by appointment Monday-Friday | 10 am-6 pm Please call 212-757-3318

Trasatlantacha brings together two artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Exploring their combined interests and experiences of Irish immigration and diaspora, Galwayborn Lisa O’Donnell and native New Yorker Maeve D’Arcy’s work approaches the subject from two different artistic perspectives and geographical locations. Associated histories, memories and experiences connect their separate visual art practices into a beautiful, figurative and abstract collaboration of paintings, drawings and maps.

Breezy Point, by Lisa O’Donnell, oil on board, 2014, 48 x 36

Lisa O’Donnell was born in Galway, Ireland. She received her B.A. in Fine Arts at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and her M.A. in Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins, London. In December 2014, she completed a three-month residency at New York Artist and Residency Foundation. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and two solo exhibitions in Ireland, the UK and the USA. In 2014, she was long-listed for the John Moores painting prize and completed a residency at the Tyrone Gutherie Centre. O’Donnell’s paintings in Trasatlantacha explore the construction of personal and collective memories and histories, contemplating the Irish diaspora in New York during the eighties and early nighties. Maeve D’Arcy is a visual artist from Queens, New York. She graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London with an M.A. in Fine Arts. She has attended many residencies, most recently at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. In Trasatlantacha, D’Arcy is working on two series: a series of drawings on found maps of Ireland, and a series of paintings and drawings that mimic elements of abstraction that can be found in maps. Her artwork translates what it means to belong to two different places, in this case, Ireland and New York.

Meet Our Teachers Yvonne Cassidy teaches the new IAC class, Creative Writing. Yvonne is the author of three novels: The Other Boy, What Might Have Been Me and most recently How Many Letters Are In Goodbye? Yvonne has taught creative writing at all levels as part of many programs, including the prestigious Irish Times Training Program and the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen Writers’ Workshop where she currently helps homeless and other marginalized writers to find their writing voice. If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you have with you? My notebook and pen (I am classing this as one item!), my iPhone for my music, and, given my Irish complexion, some factor 50 sunscreen. Where are you from, and how did you end up in New York? I’m from Dalkey, a small town nine miles outside Dublin City. Growing up, I fell in love with New York through TV and films and as soon as I could, started to come here regularly to visit. A few years ago, I fell in love again, this time with a New Yorker, which is what brought me here to live. What three writers, deceased or living, would you like to have dinner with and why? Raymond Carver, Nuala O’Faolain and Jeanette Winterson. I think we’d have a good laugh, some feisty discussion and definitely a night to remember. If you could take another IAC class, what would it be and why? It would have to be the bodhrán class. I love the sound and also watching people playing it. I suspect it is a lot harder than it looks though. What advice do you have for aspiring writers? Try not to get too focused early on about what others will think—don’t write for potential readers or publishers or agents, write for yourself. In my experience, if you write the story that you want to read, others will want to read it too.
