Peer mentor program provides individual support for ESL students By Eric Sheu Editor-in-Chief

The peer-to-peer mentor program focuses on ESL students that need help with English The program is comprised of 19 volunteers who engage with ESL students to help them understand class work. Volunteers were instructed to converse with the students in English as it was the main focus for the students. Taking a Dive with Tia Tia Banerjee Sports Editor

You know what would really help our sports teams here at school? More support from the student body. I am sure some of us have friends who are on sports teams. We should go support our friends. It would mean a lot to them. Maybe I have no room to talk, seeing as I never have the time to go to any games. However, the very few that I do get to go to have a really small crowd from Grace King, and it is mostly made of up parents and family members, not classmates. It is slightly discouraging. , NQRZ ZKDW WKLV IHHOV OLNH ÂżUVWKDQG Most people do not even know that we have a swim team, let alone come out and support us. Although honestly, unless you are a swimmer, swimming is no fun to watch, so I am not blaming any of you. But other sports, like baseball, soccer, basketball and football? Those sports have an entertainment factor, and there is still a small crowd cheering on our team. A lot of the time, games are far away or go on late into the night, so obviously many people are not going to go to those. But people should go to home games. Those are usually close by. The softball team has their home games literally right in our back yard. Knowing that our colleagues are out there watching us and cheering us on, no matter whether we are winning or losing, really feels good. The athletes here train hard to do what they do. And they are not doing it for only themselves; they are doing it for you too. Being on a sports team means representing your school, and our sports teams work hard to do that well. Sure, some of the teams are not the best, but they work hard regardless. Practice eventually makes perfect. I encourage you all, if you happen to be free and the game is at home or pretty close to home, to go support one of our sports teams. Or at the very least, when there is an announcement about a team’s win or an athlete’s accomplishment, to go say “Good job,â€? or “Congratulations.â€? That pat on the back really does mean a lot to us.

Rapid advances in technology prompt nostalgia for simpler times 5HPHPEHU WKH GD\V ZKHQ \RX ZRNH XS WR D GD\ ÂżOOHG ZLWK SOD\LQJ IULHQGV RU JRLQJ to the park and playing some soccer? This is not the reality of most kids these days unfortunately. Kids typically starting around the age of 10 spend much of their time using technology. Not just any technology like TV, but phones, iPods, iPads consume most of their time. They are not living the wholesome childhood we once had. Remember when if you wanted to watch a TV show, you actually had to be in front of the television when it aired? Now with DVR and the internet, you can record a new episode or watch it on the computer. This is actually pretty convenient, what with our busy lives in fast-moving society. However, the DVR takes away from our family time. Remember when families would actually take the time to mail a letter? Nowadays, SHRSOH UDUHO\ HYHQ VHQG H PDLOV WR HDFK RWKHU $ VLPSOH WH[W PHVVDJH ZRXOG VXIÂżFH Some would argue that texts save time, but others say that it subtracts from the meaning. What is supposed to be “great newsâ€? can be said over the phone. What is supposed to be “an amazing momentâ€? can be expressed in emoticons. Whatever happened to asking big favors in person? Why are children so obsessed with technology these days? Look around, it used to be rare seeing a child with a phone. However, as time progressed, it has now become rare to see a child without a phone. It seems that every single person has a little piece of metal plastered to their ear. They are just so consumed with everything that no one ever has down time anymore. What should also be brought to attention is the extent to how dependent we are on technology. We wake up with our phone’s alarm, play music on our mp3 player, go on the Internet for entertainment or homework purposes, and text or call friends on a daily basis. Imagine life without these things. Most kids would view this as a punishment. One of the goals of advancing technology was to improve the daily lives of common people like ourselves, yet how much of our lives is technology really improving? There has to be some limit to how much we expose ourselves to technology. Instead of texting your friend, go to their house and hang out. Instead of going to the Internet for social media, why not go out and actually interact with real people? :KLOH WKH RULJLQDO JRDO PLJKW KDYH EHHQ WR VWULYH IRU KXPDQ HIÂżFLHQF\ WHFKQRORJ\ÂśV heavy impact on today society has caused laziness. Dedicated senior looks forward to the road ahead Shenanigans with Sheu Eric Sheu

Editor-in-Chief

As I walk the stage on May 10, the thing that will be on my mind is how I got there and how long it took me to get there. All I can say is, in the past four years I have not regretted any decision I have made and all four years have been worth it. When I came to Grace King freshman year, I was thrown into a different setting. High school was a different experience. I

did not expect the freedom that I would have. There was no one to hold my hand. Though this was hard, I appreciated it. This independence taught me to work for myself and to try not to rely on others. Joining newspaper my sophomore year has challenged me more than any other activity I have done at Grace King. It remains one of the best choices I have made. I have gone to so many places around the city that I never would have gone, met a number of wonderful people and learned skills that I will be using for the rest of my life, such as photography. At times, putting together an issue for the newspaper is exhausting, but I would never trade my experiences for anything. Being a part of student council has also impacted my life. From student council I learned how to work with a large group of people. I made some of my best friends on student council. With these friends, I have been with them through everything and could not ask for better people. Grace King has changed in the past four

years, and in my opinion, for the better. The addition of the orchestra was something that I wish was there during my freshman year. It is depressing to know that it will only get better and I will not be there to be a part of that. But nevertheless, I am glad to even have been a part of the many clubs and organizations King has to offer. 7KH ÂżUVW \HDU , FDPH WKH VFKRRO ZDV D total mess. With new renovations done to the school such as the library, hallways and repainting of the rooms, I am really proud to have been part of this school. I am glad to see its improvement. Even though I know that many of my friends will not be joining me at LSU later this year, I knew it was bound to happen. I have learned to accept that it is a part of life, that we might lose some of the people know and we will make new friends. As I walk across that stage and shake the hands of the administrators, I know that from that point my life will have really begun and from these four years, I could not feel more ready to take on the next step.
