It is a bittersweet feeling to think 2020 is almost over. We were born in the midst of a pandemic and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really know life other than this. As a magazine or journal we have slowly grown to the opportunity to even exist. Thank you everyone who believed in us and pushed us towards this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finish line. @doggface208: The Man Who Uplifted The World’s Energy In 2020 You may know him as @doggface208 on Instagram or Tik Tok for his captivating dance videos, but what if we were to tell you that Nathan Apodaca is much more than what you see on social media. Traveling across the nation supported by the management team under Gina Rodriguez, he has helped promote popular brands from Hot Box to Boston Market. One thing is to be a one hit wonder and another one is to spread the success, smiles and vibes after something goes viral. We were honored to have Nathan inside our studio in downtown la for his very first fashion editorial shoot. With a fun twist including dancing, skateboarding and overall good vibes, the team agrees he was a pleasure to work with. Images that show Nathan’s true nature, dancing and hanging

out we wanted to create content true to him. While the press has been all over his overnight success and linkage to Fleetwood-mac song on skateboard, we wanted to know one basic question “What made you start Tik Tok in the first place?” “I started doing Tik Tok videos to connect and relate to my daughters, I never imagined all of this would happen” says Nathan Apodaca. Our hearts melt as we begin to understand that not only are the videos so much fun to watch but they come from an amazing purpose. We are excited to see Nathan’s future projects and videos, he single handedly turned the world’s frown upside down during tough times.

International Breakthrough Artistwhose story has taken the world by storm

Where were you born and raised? Since when did you become a singer? I was born in southern Iran, in the city of Ahvaz, but at the age of 12 we moved to Karaj, a town on the outskirts of Tehran. That’s where my parents raised myself and my older sister. I started singing at a very young age, but my professional career started at the age 15, that’s when I released my first single, called “Masti.” I had decided very early on that I wanted to pursue my true passions in life, singing and creating music. I really couldn’t see myself doing anything else with my life. But I’d say my first breakthrough hit came a few years later, when I was 18, by the name of “Parmida.” What is it like to be a singer or performer in your country? Short answer is, not very nice. As an artist you value nothing more than artistic freedom. Freedom of ideas, lyrics, music video concepts, and everything in between. So you can imagine that in a country like that, where every song or artistic work must go through a formal “approval process” by religious hardliners, it’s not easy trying to break barriers and create new, and often controversial music. The risks are simply something you have to accept if you release unapproved music. Thus, I lived a life of an underground artist, constantly fearing the safety of myself and my family. Receiving threats and getting arrested was often part of the gig. As far as performing for a live audience, it was all about the house parties and wedding venues, each facing the ever-present risk of getting shut down. But during my teenage years I’d probably do about 4-5 paid gigs a week, often times a couple on the same day. What do you think made you stand out between all the other underground singers of your generation? It was all about originality for me, and always has been. Creating something new, something that resonates with the current time and people around me. At the time when I first started, a lot of the up-and-coming artists constantly tried to copy the sounds and styles of the more established artists. But it was crucial to me that I would create my own unique style, have my own lane. I can’t even begin to explain how criticized my style was, especially when my music started gaining more traction. The “haters” were going crazy, and still are. But for me it’s all about the ability to express myself freely, and my amazing fans who always have my back. My goal is to make people happy, as long as I’m doing that, I know I’m still on the right track. Tell us about the revolution your song “gentlemen” started. Why is it so impactful? It was supposed to be another upbeat dance song, and I had a feeling it had great potential, but I don’t think anyone, including myself, ever imagined the full extent of it. The song quickly caught fire, and streaming records were set right out the gate. But it wasn’t until a group of elementary students (all young girls) festively sang and danced to the song during “morning prayer” and posted the video online, which went completely viral. Soon it was on the evening news in Iran setting the government on a mission to stop such behavior. But that only made things worse. Days after, thousands of similar videos had been uploaded from classrooms all over the country leading to the firing of countless teachers. Finally, things got so bad that even the country’s Minister of Education was laid off due to his inability to calm the situation. The song was a real game changer for me, you couldn’t escape it. It was literally played everywhere on repeat. In every car, radio station, and house party, from Tehran to Los Angeles. We followed that up with a World Tour by the same name, which finally led to my first solo performance in LA at the Dolby Theatre, which to my immense happiness sold out weeks ahead of time. I’ll never forget that night for as long as I live. Where do you see your music going in the future? With whom do you wish to collaborate, if you could collaborate with anyone? I’m currently working on several big projects, some with very well-known international artists, but I can’t say more right now, other than that we have some very exciting news to share soon. I’d say my music style really allows me to keep a very open mind as to what type of artist, style, or even nationality to collaborate with, and that’s really something I aim to do more in the years to come. Who do you have to thank for your success and for supporting you along the way? I’d say the first thanks must go to my parents, for always supporting me and really allowing me to pursue my dreams, even at the cost of their own safety. But obviously my endless love and appreciation is for my fans, whom without I’d never be where I am right now. But I also have big shout out to my manager Farshid Rafe Rafahi, and the entire EMH team whose passion on relentless work ethic have had a fantastic impact on my career. What is your favorite food and what is your favorite movie? My favorite type of food would definitely have to be Persian, but which one is really tough as I LOVE it all. I’m a real foody, and that’s a problem that I’ve really had to deal with all my life, but I’m happy that I feel like I’ve managed it pretty well recently. But if I had to pick one dish I’d go “Tahchin.” As far as movies, again something I very much enjoy, but I’d have probably say “Inception.” If you could change anything of the past what would it be? I am who I am because of my past. I wouldn’t change a thing. If you could send a message to your fans what would it be? Love you all and thank you for your support all these years. Thank you for inspiring me to be brave and push to be the best artist possible. I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. Be sure that I will never stop trying to create music you can all enjoy and have good times with. Actually, better yet, I very much look forward to party and have a good time with each and everyone of you, in person.

¿Dónde naciste y te criaste? ¿Desde cuándo te convertiste en cantante? Nací en el sur de Irán, en la ciudad de Ahvaz, pero a la edad de 12 años nos mudamos a Karaj, un pueblo en las afueras de Teherán. Allí es donde mis padres nos criaron a mí y a mi hermana mayor. Empecé a cantar a una edad muy temprana, pero mi carrera profesional comenzó a los 15 años, fue entonces cuando lancé mi primer sencillo, llamado “Masti”. Decidí muy pronto que quería seguir mi única pasión en la vida que era cantar y crear música. Realmente no me veía haciendo nada más con mi vida. Así que puedes imaginar que en un país como ese, donde cada canción o trabajo artístico debe pasar por un “proceso de aprobación” formal por parte de los religiosos de línea dura, no es fácil tratar de romper las barreras y crear música nueva, y a menudo controvertida. Los riesgos son simplemente algo que tienes que aceptar si publicas música no aprobada, por lo que viví una vida de artista underground, temiendo constantemente la seguridad mía y de mi familia. ¿Qué crees que te hizo destacar entre todos los demás cantantes underground de tu generación? Para mí, todo era cuestión de originalidad, y siempre lo ha sido. Crear algo nuevo, algo que resuene con el tiempo actual y la gente a mi alrededor. En el momento en que empecé, muchos de los artistas emergentes trataron constantemente de copiar los sonidos y estilos de los artistas más establecidos. Pero era crucial para mí que creara mi propio estilo único, tener mi propio camino. Soy un verdadero tonto, y ese es un problema con el que he tenido que lidiar toda mi vida, pero estoy feliz de sentir que lo he manejado bastante bien últimamente. Pero si tuviera que elegir un plato, diría “Tahchin”. En cuanto a las películas, de nuevo algo que disfruto mucho, pero probablemente diría “Inception”. Si pudieras cambiar algo del pasado, ¿qué sería? Soy quien soy por mi pasado. No cambiaría nada. Si pudieras enviar un mensaje a tus fans, ¿qué sería? Los quiero a todos y les agradezco su apoyo todos estos años. Gracias por inspirarme a ser valiente y empujarme a ser el mejor artista posible. Getting to know the Artist

March 4 2020 the Governor of California issued an official stay-at-home executive order following the alarming announcement of the Coronavirus presence in the US. Since then residents in California have had limited access to society while the US Government encourages that staying at home is the best way to stay safe. Many industries have been affected by this limitation to access. Specifically, the music industry has had several changes to the structure of revenue including no live shows or large music video production. Record labels and Independent artists have had to find creative ways to keep in touch with their audience while still building their catalogs. In a brief phone call interview with Independent Hip Hop Artist Bakes, we learned about the beginning of his love for music, the genre, and his experience during the pandemic with a few bizarre questions.

You started your Rap career a little later than most of the other artists in the genre. Why did you choose to turn to music after college?

I feel like I always had a love for music. My mom tells me stories all the time about me as a bay and using my hands or toys like I was playing on a drum set. She got me involved with music pretty early. I played the saxophone for many years. I probably could still read sheet music to this day. But that love and interest in music never faded. Even in high school I always was passionate about it. Now I feel like everything is coming full circle. The creative space I was in during college made me feel nothing but opportunity it was only right to turn to music.

What is your ideal scenario for writing?

Can you take us back to the very first time you wrote a Rap? I can’t remember exactly when I wrote my first rap. I really started putting actual pen to paper with this composition book I kept and just filled it with random thoughts or lines I thought rhymed. Eventually, I would just listen to music in my room and try to match whatever I had written in my notebook to whatever song I was listening to. I pretty much did that with any popular Hip Hop songs from the early 2000s. Then in high school I just always had dope one-liners come to my mind and I would just write it down not even knowing when I

Anywhere really I get ideas whenever an idea comes to my head I just shoot it to my notes on my phone. And then later I’ll just add to it or play around with it when I record. I don’t focus on just one song or one beat. I really try to put my thoughts on paper and make sure everything I am saying is 100% authentic to me and the messages I want my listeners to walk away with. I’m really big on manifestation and just all-around positivity. So creating music during a pandemic what are the highs and lows? I think this time has been the best for musicians. Just getting blocks of days to work on music and music only. I got to collaborate with new producers and explore different sounds. I don’t really see any lows to creating during this time, all of the time to collect my thoughts and completely lock-in.

Cuando se les preguntó cómo se sienten al estar solteros durante las fiestas, más del 55% de los solteros latinos se sienten ansiosos debido a las expectativas familiares, sociales y personales. El 50% de los encuestados se sienten más solos durante la temporada de fiestas - ¡el frío desanima a la gente! Por supuesto, uno no debe de buscar una pareja solo para que tu familia te deje de preguntar sobre tu vida romántica. Pero si se convierte en ex-
