Your Little Eye 04 Wombwell Woods or Blue Jay Way!

Spotted in Wombell Woods last month - This Jay! The jay is the most colourful member of the crow family in Britain. It is distinguished by its pinkish-brown plumage, striking head-pattern and bright blue wing edges and paler underparts. A woodland resident, the bird is widespread and common in England and Wales, but is usually very wary, so they are not always easy to spot. Sent in by Mark Firth - Pilley

06 Eye on Local News The Wortley Arms Charity Cook Book Proceeds to Marie Curie Cancer Care Cooking up ideas for fund raising can be difficult – but chef Andy Gabbitas and his wife Toni knew exactly where to start. As proprietors of The Wortley Arms, the couple decided to utilise their culinary expertise and create a cook book, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Marie Curie Cancer Care. In a society where celebrity-endorsed books are flying off the shelves, a publication featuring over 30 mouth-watering recipes (often found on the menu in The Wortley Arms and using ingredients sourced locally) offers the reader a refreshing change from the norm and the opportunity to support their community and a worthwhile charity. Andy is a Masterchef of Great Britain who, prior to moving to the village of Wortley on the outskirts of Sheffield, spent seven years travelling the world and serving up fine cuisine to high-profile figures such as Margaret Thatcher, John Major and designers Dolce & Gabbana. After cancer touched his family, he and Toni mobilised and decided to do everything they could to raise money for Marie Curie. In April 2010 the pair will be running the London Marathon, and after months of training and getting sponsorship, they are ready to take on the challenge. The concept for The Wortley Arms Cook Book was hatched in slightly more relaxing circumstances. While chatting over a pint with friends, Andy was encouraged to put his skills and knowledge to good use. After securing support from broadcaster and comedian Toby Foster and a local publishing company, the 48-page book went into production – kindly financed by Andy’s suppliers and friends with everyone working on it generously giving their time freely. The team has finally reached boiling point with the book ready for release on 26 February 2010 and aiming to raise £15,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care – it will be available from The Wortley Arms, Mitchells Wines in Meadowhead and every branch of Crawshaws Butchers; the minimum donation is £5. Now everybody has the opportunity to take the magic from the menu at The Wortley Arms into their own kitchen – Andy has even revealed the recipe to the famous Wortley Venison Pie! (Below)

Eye on Local News 07 Barnsley FC Footballers Support Qdos Creates Barnsley FC players Jamal Adam and Luke Potter joined Qdos Creates and pupils from Wombwell High School, last month for a performance of Who Do You Think You Are? The latest project from the dance theatre company, Who Do You Think You Are? uses the theme of football to explore issues which surround asylum seekers, identity and racism, and is touring schools in the Barnsley area until May. Anjie Taylor, Artistic Director, Qdos Creates, said: “We are delighted that the players are coming along to add their support to Who Do You Think You Are? I’m sure they will really inspire the pupils. We want young people to identify with the issues, and the support of Barnsley FC will help us to achieve this.”

BFC Players with members of Qdos Creates and Pupils from Wombwell High School last month.

A Poster a Day at Barnsley Digital Media Centre! The Barnsley Digital Media Centre (DMC) at County Way in the centre of Barnsley is hosting a Technology Showcase exhibition in collaboration with the Hive Gallery. The exhibition features the work of local graphic designer Craig Burgess, including 120 of his best posters, and runs until 16th April. It is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm and is free to attend. A year ago Craig set himself the challenge of designing a poster a day for 365 days! To make sure there was no cheating Craig set up a website, www.novlcuisine.com, to chart his progress, allow people to comment on his designs and upload their own posters. He also managed to rope in a partner, Mr P, to support him in the challenge. All the posters are available to view on the website with Mr P’s designs on the left and Mr B’s on the right. There were a few rules - each A4 poster produced had to be printable and uploaded onto the internet before 23.59 hrs each day. Few thought that Craig would get to the end, but now having completed the challenge he is missing his daily design fix. Linda Geary, Sales and Marketing Manager at the DMC, says: ”Craig offers a great range of posters, some of which are thought provoking, topical or just funny! Come along and see for yourself.”

By tradition, April 23rd is the day for a red rose in the button hole, the national flower.

By George.......Isn’t it time the English Raised the Flag? The enthusiasm for Englishmen to proclaim St George’s Day a national holiday is building. “It is time that St George was reclaimed from the dragon, from past associations with racism and the far Right,” says historian Simon Barrow, he claims the original St George was originally celebrated for defending the marginalised and challenging the persecution policy of the then Emperor, Constantine. He suggests George should become the “people’s saint and celebrated in a way that he deserves’’.

St. George’s Day falls on April 23rd - this year why not GET INVOLVED!

Lynda Is BPL’s 1000th Fitness Flex Member Barnsley leisure provider BPL celebrated last month with their 1000th member to join its Fitness Flex membership: Lynda Riddington from Darton. Although the new fitness membership was only introduced three months ago, it has had a huge response from local people as it offers an affordable way to get fit, with no long term commitment. Lynda signed up at the beginning of February, after hearing about the extensive facilities and the ‘pay as you go’ monthly fee; through a work colleague at the Mount Vernon Hospital. Lynda said: “I was given a really warm welcome when I first came to Darton Community Sports Centre and I found the leisure supervisors really helpful. I live close by, so I regularly attend the fitness suite at the sports centre but I have also visited the other two venues included in the package to swim. I would recommend this package to anyone wanting to get fit on a budget – with no contract to sign or joining fee, it gives you the flexibility without tying you into a monthly commitment.” Lynda had always kept fit and healthy through training with her bodybuilder husband Mark, but following an accident at work two years ago, he had to have his leg removed to save his life which put attending a gym on hold for both of them. Now, two years down the line, Lynda is back attending a gym and feeling much fitter and healthier for it, whilst Mark is again competing and was recently the first amputee to enter the Body Building Fitness Federation (BBFF) event. He now hopes to inspire other amputees to get back into the activities they enjoy. (Watch this space for an exclusive piece on Mark in The Barnsley Eye). BPL Fitness Flex membership costs just £14.99 per month and involves no joining fee or monthly contract. Members can access facilities at three of BPL’s popular leisure venues, including Darton Community Sports Centre and at the newly refurbished Dearneside Leisure Centre and Wombwell Swimming Pool. The package enables members to access unlimited - fitness classes, three fitness suites and two swimming pools. Lynda Riddington at Darton Community Sports Centre

I love saying that ‘I’m an author’ with a smile on my face. Because it’s what I wanted to be more than anything – except an Oscar winning actress – and I enjoy it so much that my work feels more like a hobby. In the past I was the Queen of Rubbish Jobs, and I know there is nothing worse than having to trudge out on a cold morning to do a job you hate. Trust me – I was a trainee accountant once, the worst job mis-match in history for someone like me who hates numbers. I used to count down in quarter-hour increments how long I had to go until home time. The word ‘Bored’ just didn’t cut it. I thought the job title would make my mum and dad proud, which is why I stuck it for so long – I just ended up making myself ultra-miserable. If I never see a table of statistics again, it won’t be long enough. I’m already doing that ‘mum’ thing and hoping that my boys find something in life they are happy to do – and get a decent wage for (the mad thing was that my trainee accountancy post paid a pittance – so not only was I unhappy, but poor as well!). Once upon a time, my younger son George couldn’t decide whether ‘to be a Premiership footballer, or open up a fruit and veg shop.’ The big one, Tez, has wanted to be everything from a soldier to a genie. Funnily enough, I thought Tez would be the arty one and George would go into something that involved lots of technology and computers. That seems to have turned on its head though and Tez has developed a Maths head, and George has turned into a John Gielgud in the making. I’m not going to dissuade my son from his passion for drama. I was there myself at that age, desperate to become the new Bonnie Langford and waiting for the world to discover my genius

But he’s luckier than I ever was, because he’s found a club that I would have given my eye teeth to have been part of at his age – Tykes 2000, run by Gaynor Watts – a midweek event at the Metrodome. George has been on a TV a few times now as an extra, mixing with the likes of Billie Piper and Sue Johnston (no relation - alas). He puts me totally to shame, because I wimped out when I realised just how much hard work jobbing actors do and didn’t pursue my own ambitions in this field. And there he is, getting up at the crack of dawn sometimes to spend the day filming in Liverpool, dragging his suitcase of clothes behind him, planning which Xbox game to spend his earnings on. He’s a relative newbie – his fellow Tykes have appeared on programmes like A Touch of Frost, Cold Blood, Red Riding. He takes the early mornings and late nights in his stride. The pay off is watching the finished product on screen and I feel the thrill as much as he does. It’s funny seeing your lad on the TV and I really hope that passion stays with him, because knowing what you want to be is half the battle – so many people never find their employment ‘niche’. My son already swans into the TV studios like a pro with his sandwiches and phone, so he can let me know what time he’ll be home. I’m so jealous, I’m turning green as I’m typing this. But whatever job my sons do, I hope they do it because they love it and not to try and make me proud – because I will be anyway. Actor, computer wizard, rugby player, genie – so long as they don’t have the miserable adventures I had en route to my own perfect job. One thing is for sure - I shall be questioning them a LOT if either decides to go into accountancy!

Robert Eaton, North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and Creative Director of the Russell Eaton salon in Barnsley and Leeds gives his consultation advice:

Catwalk Colour 2010

Your hair is the ultimate fashion accessory, and just like fashion it changes seasonally. This spring summer blondes have been a huge colour story on the catwalks of designers such as Chanel, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Versace , with a palate of subtle hues and tones that will make this summers hair bright fresh and unique. here are some of this summers hottest hair trends this summer! This summer we will see platinum blondes being bright and fresh but also along side a more natural softer buttery blondes with randomly placed vanilla ribbon highlights, highlights are seamlessly blended with fluid blends of tone giving hair a beautiful ,glossy and a very expensive and luxurious feel.

The trend

Natural looking peroxide blonde, this Stockholm Street Style inspired look is a massive trend this summer. If you’re after an edgy look, choose this bold white blonde colour. White blonde as an edgy, eye grabbing statement can be styled particularly well with the strong short look hair styles for 2010.

Top tips It is very important to find the right tone of blonde for your skin tone, blonde is no different the right hair colour should make your skin glow and eyes sparkle. Look at the kind of colours you wear, do you wear cool or warm tones ? look at your lifestyle blonde is a colour that takes some maintenance so it is important to consider how often you want to visit the salon. a great way of introducing colour to a hair cut s to place slices through the underneath of the hair cut . This introduces colour that gives a shimmering effect giving texture to the look but with the minimum of maintenance.

Eye on Health 11 Did you know? Each year more than 37,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK that’s more then 100 people every day. 8 out of 10 bowel cancers occur in people aged 60 years and over. Research suggests that 90% of bowel cancer patients will survive the disease for more than 5 years if diagnosed at the earliest stage. Locally (Population 239,300 approximately cases diagnosed annually) Recently bowel cancer screening was introduced and in a two year period 34 patients were diagnosed with bowel cancer all of them had symptoms. What we hope to achieve from bowel cancer screening (BSC) is patients at the early stage putting them into the 90% cure rate category. Therefore knowing the symptoms of bowel cancer is very important. “Don’t sit on your symptoms”

?

Healthwise Question

What are the symptoms of Bowel Cancer? Symptoms may vary but we know these which might be bowel cancer include: • A persistent change in normal bowel habit such as going to the toilet more often and diarrhoea, especially if you are also bleeding from the back passage. • Bleeding from the back passage without any reason, particularly if over 50. • A lump in your tummy or lump in your back passage. • Unexplained tiredness, weight loss. If these symptoms persist for four weeks or more you should see your GP. Please remember that most of these symptoms will not be cancer.

Men have their own styles. Their own cuts. And their own attitude. To blend the gray from a man’s hair, you need techniques and products crafted specifically for him. For more than 15 years, American crew has been the salon brand that men trust.

The American Crew colour system comes in 4 shades they are Dark Brown, Black, Medium Brown, Medium Ash and Light Blonde. American Crew have also created 4 different application methods these are :-

Buffing Sponge

The Buffing technique is right for guys with gravity-defying hair less than 1” in length and a natural, coarse or curly texture. It involves using a sponge to create a stipples look that naturally hides gray

Vent Brush The blocking technique works well for guys with hair longer than 1” that naturally succumbs to gravity. It creates a very natural look with energy and movement Three-Rowed, Stiff-Bristled Comb

Perfect for clients who have an architectural, vertical hairstyles that defies gravity supported by thick hair, 1” to 2” in length. The blading technique also works when a detailed root-to-tip application is desired

Hair Colour Brush Use this technique to achieve all-over gray blending. It works for any length, any texture, any guy.

Now were introducing a gray blending system for their unique needs. It gives you the ability to create the natural colour men want in just five minutes. In just a few minutes, you can make your client look and feel five years younger. Our gray blending service doesn’t require a special visit to the salon, with embarrassing foils, long waits at the shampoo bowl, and other things that sometimes make men nervous. Take Time to Breathe - by Maria Nortcliffe As I am writing this the last few days have made us all believe that winter has, at last, now gone. Of course knowing our weather patterns this could all change before you read this. But hasn’t it been lovely to get out into the garden for an hour or throw open the windows whilst doing the housework or go for a walk. You feel as though you can breathe again and something makes you want to breathe quite deeply. Breathing, we all do it, from the moment we are born to the moment we die. It is a bodily function that happens constantly, and with out us really being conscious of it, controlled by the respiratory centre in the brainstem. We hardly take any notice of our breathing until our body is under stress from exercise or exertion and we say we are out of breath or breathless. Sometimes the breathlessness can be an indicator of health problems. For most of us we simply continue to breathe minute after minute, marked by the rise and fall or our chest. As we breathe we take in air through the mouth or nose and it is taken straight to the lungs. Oxygen passes into the blood stream and is pumped by the heart around the body. It is taken to all cells of the body where it is used, along with nutrients from our food and turned into the energy we need to function properly. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of the process, is returned to the blood stream and taken back to the lungs where it is expelled from the body as we breathe out. Did you know that when we breathe we only breathe out one tenth of the amount of air in the lungs and breathe in the same amount which mixes with the stale air already in the lungs? With all this in mind, we can think of many different effects our breathing can have on our body. A normal adult at rest will breathe between 13 and 17 times per minute. If we are suffering from stress, as most of us are at work, breathing becomes shallower and more rapid without us really being aware. In this case the quality of air in our body is decreasing because we are replacing less of the capacity of the lungs. This must mean that we become tired and lose the ability to concentrate. I wonder how many people take time to move away from their desk, stretch out muscles to encourage the flow of blood and oxygen around the body and take a few deep breaths to replace all that stale air in the lungs. The idea that breathing can affect our blood pressure is nothing new. If we are under moments of great stress panic or anger we are told to “Take a deep breath”. Breathing slowly and deeply calms the heart and nerves. Slow breathing helps to relax muscle tension especially in the chest area allowing blood vessels to open and relieve pressure on the heart. If we are breathing deeply into the abdomen we are also using the diaphragm more efficiently. The diaphragm is a large muscle supporting the lungs. As we inhale the muscle contracts and flattens, the intercostals muscles between the ribs contract and pull the ribcage upwards and outwards causing the lungs to expand and draw in air When air is expelled the chest muscles and the diaphragm relax. This expansion and retraction helps to circulate a surprising amount of blood and helps to relieve some of the pressure on the heart. So what does this mean for us? Techniques for breathing are used when people have had surgery and particularly chest surgery and also for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Breathing techniques are used to help people with anxiety, to release tension and aid relaxation. And of course breathing techniques are used to aid pain relief in childbirth. These are quite specific examples but quite frankly, breathing techniques are useful to help everyone relax.

So here are a few tips to help you:

• Choose comfortable, non-restricting clothing. • Find a comfortable place where you will not be disturbed.

• It may be helpful to play some relaxing music. • Lie down if you can. Your breath needs to go into the abdomen and this happens naturally in this position. • As you breathe in be aware of the breath going into the abdomen as it rises, and falling again as you breathe out. • Take several breaths and imagine the body feeling heavier and sinking into the ground as you relax. • Concentrate on the breath and try to make it even as you breathe. Count to 5 slowly as you breathe in and again as you breathe out. You will notice a pause as you change from breathing in to breathing out. • You will find a rhythm that is comfortable for you. • The more you practice this the easier it will become. You can then begin to slow down your breathing at the same time taking deeper breaths. • Yoga and ‘Tai chi classes are very good for helping with breathing techniques and relaxation if you enjoy working with a group. So during these lovely spring days remember that breathing, although the most natural thing in the world, needs a bit of attention occasionally. Breathing properly can have an amazing effect on your mood and levels of stress and anxiety. Breathing well can increase the efficiency of your body but can also help to refresh your mind. Enjoy it! Breathe in the freshness of Spring! Maria Nortcliffe M.A.R M.I.C.H.T

Nail Colours Spring 2010 Forget French polish, this year were all in need of a nail shake up routine and looking at the catwalks the colours show a range of neon’s and nudes to take us through to summer. NEON Nails Ultra bright colours have come full circle once again so try electric yellows, oranges, pinks and blues that rival the highlighter pens of your youth. These colours had playfulness and a sense of freshness to light grey or white clothing, yellow brightens up a wardrobe full of black, navy and blue.

Meet the Expert Artistic Director & Regional Educator for Paul Mitchell, Zena Claire. Zena’s wealth of experience takes her throughout the north east of England delivering colour education, this month; she shares what’s hot with the Eye for the season’s Colour trends

Colour Me... RED! AFTER

BEFORE

Nudes Nude look nails are perfect this season they look classy, chic and fresh. Nude tones of peach, pink’s and brown’s are bang on trend this season. Nude tones can sometimes be difficult to wear unless you choose the correct shade for your complexion.

Fair Skin Tones Try a pinkish nude, the lighter the better this will help compliment your pale skin.

Medium Skin Tones Opt for a nude polish with gold undertones to enhance your colour.

Dark Skin Tones Your nude should have a hint of brown or chocolate to give it that barely there look.

CALGEL offer a wide selection of colours which won’t smudge chip or crack and will give you weeks of long lasting shine from your fingertips to your toes. Treatments available at Sparkle & Gloss, at the Treatment Rooms, Chesham Road, off Summer Lane, Barnsley to make appointment call 07927 659572. Soft reds are defiantly the way forward for spring; this suits a milky skin tone. Winter saw strong, vivid hybrid red, spring gallops in with more faded tones of mahogany, strawberry’s & flame shades of copper. Flame copper shades teamed with dark dramatic eyes for a rock chick look, look amazing! Add interest to a short crop with contrasting tones of ruby red, mahogany & copper. A lot of short haired ladies say “they never look any different” here’s your answer. Change the way you have your hair done, your designer can design a technique as individual as you are. If not maybe it’s time you changed your hair designer..?

Home care essentials... The secret to keeping reds is condition; a tightly closed cuticle will lock in the large colour molecule of artificial red. The supermarket sweep products just don’t step up to the challenge.. We use & recommend Paul Mitchell Colour care system , used effectively extends the life of colour We use & recommend Color protect shampoo, daily conditioner & color spray.

How to wear Summer pastels This summer will be full of pastels, nudes and blush colours according to the spring and summer shows. However the most frequently asked question that I get at the moment is, ‘how can I wear the nudes and pastels?’ We can all wear the lighter shades and colours that summer brings, but it is HOW you wear them that makes the difference between looking your best and looking like an ice cream sundae. Natural blondes with very fair skin and light coloured eyes are lucky and can wear pastel pink, apricot, mint, primrose yellow, soft white and cream. You can layer these together so your whole look is light and summery

On Thursday 25th March 2010 one of the leading championship strikers Daniel Bogdanovic took part in an event in aid of the Help for Heroes. The Barnsley star had his hair cut and styled by International Stylist Justin Tellus (above) at Fusion Salon in Barnsley that kicked started a 25 day marathon. During this period all people visiting the salon will receive a signed autograph and one lucky winner will received a signed Barnsley football shirt presented by the star himself on the last day of the event on the 20th of April 2010.

blue, lavender and icy green. Stick to blue based colours and avoid peach, apricot and yellow. Clear colouring with dark hair and bright striking eyes (be they blue, green or topaz)? Wear lemon yellow, light apricot, mint, light aqua and white with a darker contrast of navy, black or charcoal. You could also try mixing jewel colours and brights with your pastels e.g. scarlet, true blue or periwinkle.

Asos If your colouring is dark and strong with dark brown/black hair, dark eyes, eyelashes and brows, be careful with the nudes and pastel colours worn on their own. You must mix them with darker colours for contrast.

The director Diane Logan will then donate a percentage of all the services that have been carried out at Fusion hair, Skin and Nail Salon during the 25 day marathon, along with Clients denotations. Daniel will then present the cheque on behalf of Fusion at the St Georges Day Celebrity Golf Event to be held at Stoke Park on Wednesday 21st April 2010 in aid of supporting the Help the Heroes Fund.

M&S The British soft colouring of dark blonde (mousy) or brown hair, soft and muted eye colouring needs to be careful with pastels. You look your best with tones of the same colour. So try mint and turquoise, blush pink and damson, sky blue and teal, stone, taupe and shell together.

Dorothy Perkins Red hair and warm skin tones? Apricot, peach, cream, primrose yellow and mint will be the flavours for you! Avoid blues and lavenders.

The Barnsley Eye “Loves” music......as it happens we also “Hate” Racism..... so you can imagine how stoked we were when we heard that our great town was to host this years Northern end of the Love Music Hate Racism weekend with The Mighty UB40 headlining! I’ve been going to gigs and festivals most of my adult life. Back in the day we had to travel to get to many gigs (far away from Barnsley). Long nights spent travelling up and down the UK on trains and buses to the big 4 cities as there was no way acts I was into like, say, Helmet or Nirvana were playing in tarn..... No way - In fact you’d be lucky to see them in Leeds or even Sheffield early on in their careers - it was always small gigs in London you had to hike it down to. As for festivals well it was either Glastonbury or Reading...that was it! (Or maybe The Pheonix if you were really desperate!) But now all that’s changed. It is absolutely fantastic that there are festivals going on all over Yorkshire and some great ones are right here in Barnsley. I’ve always been greatful that most of the smaller concerts I’ve attended down the years have been set in environments that promoted “Love Music Hate Racism” - and I can say that some of the best gigs I’ve ever seen have been played by bands of multicultural origin. Ones that spring to mind are Cypress Hill, Bad Brains, Roots Manuva, Jimmy Cliff, The Specials, Toots and the Maytals, The Rollins Band, Bloc Party, Deftones, Gorillaz, Metallica, Body Count, The Prodigy, and Rage Against the Machine. These are bands with black, asian, hispanic and white members all within their ranks....multicultural acts with sounds so diverse it makes me wonder - how can anyone who really “Loves” music be Racist? .... thats why this weekend is so important..... To get that message across - plus It shows how far our town has come that we are attracting events of this magnitute when 15 years ago we could but dream of having something like this on our doorstep. I love Barnsley and I Love Music & Hate Racism. GM

24 Eye on Food

Trying to lose weight? Try these Fat Fighting Foods! Losing weight can be a losing battle, Kumud Gandhi, food scientist and founder of The Cooking Academy and The Saffron House says “Dieting doesn’t work for most people due to a combination of hormonal changes, muscle loss, and flat out frustration”. If your body has a shortage of calories, your body’s natural response is to conserve fat so it will hold on to everything you eat in case it will not be fed for a while again. The body instinctively goes into starvation mode and the body’s metabolic rate will drop quite considerably making it more difficult to lose weight. The point is not to starve yourself but instead make wise food choices. Here are a couple of foods that actually fight fat!

Chillies

Cinnamon

Studies show that chillies can raise the metabolism by as much as 20%. The consumption of chillies can also make you feel great as they also have the power to release endorphins; the happy hormone.

Cinnamon is a great appetite suppressant and prevents insulin spikes that are so common after we eat. Insulin spikes are a body’s signal to store fat, rather than burn it. Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to your porridge, which is also a great way to fill you up in the morning.

Fennel

Oranges

Fennel, known to many as the slimming herb is actually great for stimulating the metabolism. Try chewing on fennel as this is also good for suppressing the appetite and reduces the urge for sweet treats.

Garlic

Oranges contain flavones compounds which burn fat. Women who ate the most flavones had a scientifically lower increase in their body fat over a fourteen day period. Its best to snack on fresh fruit slices, but if you prefer orange juice you should stick to the juice with pulp for the best results.

also inhabit fat absorption and helps glucose regulation. Studies also show that Green Tea works as an appetite suppressant and has been known to considerably reduce one’s calorie intake for the day.

Half an hour before a work out drink a cup of Green Tea as this is the perfect way to increase energy levels and speed up the metabolism fast. Green tea can

Berries

Especially cranberries, goji, blueberries - Not only are berries loaded with Vitamin C, but they also help you burn up to 30% more fat when you exercise. So, if you’re heading for the gym, eat a cup of berries before you go to make that workout do 30% more work for you.

Eggs

Green Tea

Garlic is a hot herb known to increase your metabolic rate by as much as 30%. Garlic is also great for aiding digestion and is known to reduce high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

STEAK

Research shows that eating an egg at breakfast can actually make you feel fuller for longer and prevent any hunger pangs. The best way to eat your eggs is to avoid fried versions, instead try poaching or boiling them. To ensure that your body absorbs the iron content within the eggs try and have a drink high in vitamin C at the same time.

The introduction of red meat into your diet is a great way to increase your iron and protein levels without increasing your calorie intake. Eating lean cuts of red meat can help to keep muscle mass during weight loss; muscle also incinerates more calories than fat making it easier to shed those stubborn pounds that are hard to shift. The phosphorus content present in meat is much more easily absorbed than that present in cereals and legumes. This is owing to the fact that cereals and legumes contain phosphorus, usually in the form of phytic acid that must be hydrolyzed before absorption. Meat also serves as the main source for the intake of vitamin B12. Be warned however, meat does not contain fibre which is essential to maintaining a good digestive system, so try and limit your intake to just a few portions per week. Also try and avoid preserved meats such as bacon, sausages and salami as these are very high in saturated fats and salts nitrites which have been known to be responsible for causing certain cancers. Tip: - Try eating your red meat with mustard. The turmeric in mustard is what makes the yellow, and what makes mustard slow the growth of fat tissue.

The pub is a warren of small rooms with low ceilings, stone-flagged floors and old cast iron fireplaces, still lit by gas and linked by narrow corridors. Anyone looking to enjoy a drink at the Kings Arms will be pleased to know that, in an era when too many pubs have disconnected their hand pumps, it remains committed to traditional cask ales. Ingredients ž of smoked salmon side 6-8 anchovies Juice of 1 lemon Zest of 1 lemon Salt White pepper 2 blocks of unsalted butter Method Use a terrine mould. On the bottom of the terrine mould make a layer of smoked salmon, make sure to leave no gaps. Cover with a thin layer of anchovy butter. Repeat the process until you reach the top of the tin. Finishing with a layer of smoked salmon. Place in the fridge for 4 to 5 hours to set. Carefully remove from the tin and slice with a sharp knife. Serve with grilled bread and dressed salad.

Eye on Local Business 27 Move and Improve Are you fed up with your home interior, wanting to move house or simply waiting to get to your next property before you pick up that paintbrush and invest in accessories? This month, we speak to Sarah Walker, property expert and former presenter of To Buy or Not to Buy on BBC1 to find out how you can improve, move and take the improvements with you!

2010 trends 2010 will see bold colours, patterns, fabrics gaining their rightful place in - coupled with statement flooring, glamour, and dramatic lighting. Trends to give interiors a whole new slant.

textures and your interior retro styles, will marry up

How can I improve if I’m planning to move? ”Although reports on what’s happening in the property market vary, you could be waiting for a while until your property sells. In the meantime, there’s no reason to live with a dated interior and you don’t have to let someone else enjoy the fruits of your labour. Another option would be to partner with a reliable company for a quick and easy sale.”

Sarah, who works closely with property specialist needtosellquick. co.uk, continues: “We come across a number of people who want to sell their properties to free up cash, move up or down the chain, avoid lengthy selling processes or simply clear debt. The main issue is finding a buyer for your property quickly.” With offices in Barnsley, the company offers homeowners a quick and convenient route to selling their property fast”. “Selling to a reliable company that can complete the transaction quickly and smoothly is certainly an option worth considering. It can sometimes become the light at the end of a very long tunnel.” “If you are thinking of moving, invest in some new pieces of furniture, statement lighting and accessories that pick up on key trends, which will be attractive to prospective buyers and can then move with you when you do.”

Who’s A Pretty Boy Then? Another scientific breakthrough! Scientists (yes, them again) have deduced that as the nation’s health improves as a whole, women’s taste in men is softening, which could well explain the rise of the Pretty Boy... Their theory is that when health is poor, women will go for rugged, tough looking men, which sub-consciously they believe will result in stronger offspring. In relation to this, when a nation’s health improves, and life expectancy rises, women will become attracted to more feminine-looking men, with gentler natures to match their boyish (and in some cases, girlish) faces. Research carried out on more than 5,000 women showed that Zac Efron recently beat Sean Connery in the attractive stakes by a mile, but does this really prove that the modern woman prefers a cutesy-looking boy to a ‘real’ man? The age of the women who took part is not known, but my feeling is that these findings are simply the results of generational preference. For example, take Zac Efron (please, someone take him). Here is a man who is waxed within an inch of his life, his straightened hair strategically designed to fall over one eye, enhancing his dyed black lashes and baby blue contact lenses. He spends his days self-tanning, doing sit-ups and singing in High School Musical (suddenly, the demise of his engagement to Vanessa Hudgens is no longer such a mystery…) Mr Efron is possibly THE most groomed and polished ‘actor’ ever to grace our screens, but I challenge you to find any woman over the age of 21 who finds him attractive. Zac is one of the new breed of male, who along with Orlando Bloom, Tobey MacGuire and Robert Pattinson (R-Pattz to those down with the kidz) are infiltrating the Hollywood screen of old, where once, men were all square jaws, glinting eyes and imposing physiques – for one of highlighted moptops, ‘guyliner’ and tinted lip balm. In spite of these ‘scientific findings’ I conducted some research of my own and while R-Pattz’s name did keep cropping up among the younger circles (they are only human after all…) it became apparent that the majority of ladies asked, still prefer a ‘manly’ man. Colin Farrell, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman and Johnny Depp were the re-ocurring favourites and all women asked were fit, healthy and not craving babies! The general consensus is, no grown woman wants to spend her days fighting her bloke for the bathroom mirror or her Clinique - and even though Sean Connery now spends more time dodging coffins than bullets, you ask any woman who was around in his James Bond hey-day and you can bet they still wouldn’t kick him out of bed (and they’d be safe in the knowledge that he wouldn’t steal their mascara in the morning).

LS Theatre Productions are pleased to announce Carly Stenson will be joining the cast of A Tribute To Bob Fosse. Carly plays Steph Dean from Channel 4 Drama Hollyoaks. Carly is a sensational vocalist and dancer with a real passion for Musical Theatre. To have her onboard is a real bonus for LS Theatre Productions and will help them take the next step in the right direction. LS Productions is a South Yorkshire based theatre company comprising of working professionals who are currently carving out careers within the industry, who perform along side a host of talented local performers, producing high quality show stopping theatrical productions. The company was founded by Barnsley actor Sebastian Shaw in 2008 and has since raised over five thousand pounds for both local and national charities, acclaiming itself a name for the unique and diverse quality of its performances. Sebastian told the Eye: “I believe we are Barnsleys leading self funded theatre company that is ran by volunteers and the only theatre group around that produces charity shows of this nature and size. Our next production is A Tribute To Bob Fosse. The show celebrates the life and works of legendary choreographer Bob Fosse from his early years as a dancer to his awarding winning Broadway choreography. Featuring sections from Chicago, Liza With A “Z” Damm Yankees, Pyjama Game, Sweet Charity and Cabaret The show will be supporting the national charity Help For Heroes www.helpforheroes.org.uk. I find it crazy that we only started two years ago as a one off charity show for Cancer Research Uk and now five shows later with a twenty strong core group of local and national performers and a huge following we continue to go from strength to strength”.

Shutter Island Director: Martin Scorsese Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Based on the 2003 novel by Dennis Lehane. OK, first - let me get this out of the way as the Yorskshireman in me hasn’t been able to let this lie since I saw this film. I saw Shutter Island at The Odeon in Londons West End - at the box office I was absolutely flabbergasted to be told that my seat was going to cost me 13 quid............ thats “Thirteen Pounds”. No Popcorn. No Nacho’s Jalapinos and Salsa, No Wine Gums, No Pop....just the seat. So as I grumpily sat down I was already telling myself “This had better be the best film I have seen this year” and as I’ve already seen the 3D extravagansas that were Avatar and Alice in Wonderland - Shutter Island had a massive cinamatic Mountain to climb. OK now thats done with, here’s another gripe - I used to greatly dislike Leonardo Dicaprio as somewhat of a pretty boy and not much else when it came to his late 90’s output. His brilliant early performances in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries and This Boys Life were followed by what I can only describe as massive disapointments in Titanic, Romeo & Juliet, and The Man in the Iron Mask (which I hated). However, with his portrayal of Amsterdam Vallon in Gangs of New York, his first of four films with director Martin Scorsese he seemed to mature into a brilliantly rounded character actor in my eyes. I started to appreciate his acting diversity and think of The Departed and Blood Diamond as fine movies. Shutter Island takes place almost entirely on an island that houses a hospital for the criminally insane in the mid-50s. From the minute they disembark, US marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are confronted by a nightmarish, gothic bedlam of lost souls and sinister seeming doctors and psychiatrists, including the mysterious Dr John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the man in charge of the place. The two men are on the island to investigate the strange disappearance of a patient locked up after murdering her three children. But it soon becomes clear that Teddy has his own reasons for visiting, which are connected to the death of his wife a few years earlier. Every horror cliché is here, from evil doctors to children’s corpses, screeching rats and lunatics with stapled heads sat rotting behind bars. There’s not a moment’s respite from the melodrama, in a film with so many twists you need to be right on the button to keep up. Shutter Island is brilliant. I loved every minute and I was shocked that it ran to 140 minutes, for this is a film which has never a dull moment. Once you get past the trickery, Shutter Island offers sumptuous, enthralling, shivery gothic film-making with a hardboiled heart and a sly line in asylum humour. Like Hitchcock’s Vertigo, to which it has been compared by many London critics, I wonder whether Shutter Island might be seen in a more positive light in years to come as most reviews have been pretty poor. Martin Scorsese I believe suffers somewhat from the exalted standing of his own back catalogue when it comes to critical notices. Had it been filmed by a newcomer, rather than the familiar, bushy-browed New Yorker who shot Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Casino, Shutter Island might just have received top notch reviews all round. I felt the same way about Quentin Tarantino when I saw Inglourious Basterds........Awesome as it was I kept seeing reviews saying “Not as good as Jackie Brown. Not as Good as Pulp Fiction”. True as this may be - the film was a fine film in it’s own right and suffered due to the greatness of the movies that preceeded it. As Shutter Island is, it is a skilfully concocted psychological thriller noir, brilliantly acted with great performances all round. The only real issue I had with the film was the score, which while suitably ominous and booming was ridiculously overbearing at times. During the opening scene as they arrived on the island I was beginning to wonder if someone in the control room had turned the volume up to 11 by accident. All in all though - I Loved it....possibly the best film I have seen this year and having already seen Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland and James Camerons Avatar AND with the seat costing me a whopping 13 quid (no less). Thats a MASSIVE call for this movie. Five Stars! GM

HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS WORLD TOUR 2010 Sheffield Arena, Wednesday 9th June 2010

The Harlem Globetrotters’ 2010 “Magical Memories” World Tour is the team’s 84th consecutive season of touring the world. They have played in 120 countries, on six continents, for more than 130 million fans and they will be returning to Sheffield Arena on 9th June. The Harlem Globetrotters are a worldwide icon, synonymous with family entertainment and great basketball skills. The Globetrotters represent 84 years of breaking down barriers, acts of goodwill, and a commitment to fans that goes beyond the game. Abe Saperstein founded the team in 1926, and they played their first road game in Hinckley, Ill., on Jan. 7, 1927. The cheers have never stopped, as the Globetrotters have entertained more than 130 million fans in 120 countries worldwide. For many, the Globetrotter experience was an introduction to the game of basketball. In 1948 and 1949, the Globetrotters stunned the world by twice defeating the World Champion Minneapolis Lakers. They were socially influential and quickly became recognized as the world’s best basketball team, showing that African-Americans could excel on a professional level. Those victories accelerated the integration of the NBA and ushered in a new era of sports. Former player Mannie Jackson (right) purchased the team in 1993, becoming the first African-American to own a major international sports and entertainment organization. He led the team to unprecedented levels, tripling its revenue in three years and quadrupling its size in five, cementing its status as the most predominant and recognized sports and entertainment organization in the world In September 2005. Jackson remains Chairman of the Board of Directors and retains 20 percent ownership in the team. The Globetrotters’ show will feature even more amazing basketball skills and wizardry, with a continued focus on family entertainment. Off the court, the organization will increase alliances with global partners, develop a full line of licensed products, execute a multi-media strategy to gain worldwide saliency, and continue the brand’s legacy of deep social involvement in local communities. Tickets to see The Harlem Globetrotters show are priced £12.50 - £40 (subject to booking fee) and are available now, in person at the box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at

Eye on Local Photography

Andy Hemingway - ‘Gritstone & Sky’ Barnsley photographer Andy Hemingway’s landscape photography has recently received a lot of attention. His ‘Gritstone & Sky’ exhibition at Wakefield’s Coach House Gallery received critical acclaim, while a number of his images have won awards from two on-line photography magazines. Andy’s passion for the landscape began during childhood. Born and raised in the Pennine town of Huddersfield, regular walks on the surrounding hills with his father, cemented an early familiarity with Yorkshire’s rugged and unique landscape. “For me, landscape photography is much more that just capturing a view. I often research the history, folklore and geology of the areas that I shoot and try to convey something of the spirit of the place. I often return to the same locations during different times of day and season’s to capture the effects of light and weather throughout the year and try to capture something of my love for these landscapes. The locations that I visit have not only been formed by the forces of nature but have a long history of activity by humans, that has shaped the landscape that we currently see. From the farmers of the Neolithic, through exploitation by industry and commerce, to the leisure playgrounds of today. I believe that the landscape of the Pennines is one of the finest in the world. It may not have the mountains and craggy coastlines of Scotland and Wales, that are currently so popular with photographers but the drystone walls, tumbled down farms, heather and rock strewn moorland, the gritstone edges all feel like home to me. Andy’s forthcoming exhibitions include Two Visions (with Chris Charlesworth): Month of Sundaes (Attic Gallery), Marsden. 5th - 30th April 2010. A Dramatic Edge (with Richard Cooper and Nick Walton): Arkwright’s Mill, Cromford, Matlock Bath. 20th - 27th August 2010

Eye on Local Sport 37 Sykes claims British super-featherweight title Dewsbury’s Gary Sykes claimed the vacant British super-featherweight title with a unanimous points win over Andy Morris, 26, in Huddersfield last month. Former Commonwealth bronze medallist Morris stepped in after the withdrawal of Sykes’s original opponent, Ricky Burns, to produce a thrilling contest. The two fighters served up a domestic classic that could have gone either way on the judges’ scorecards. In the end Dewsbury-born Sykes got the nod. A delighted Sykes told Sky Sports afterwards. “I thought I was going to take over in the middle rounds but he grinded it out and it was a real close decision. It’s been a lot of hard work and a real team effort. I’m over the moon to win it because Andy was very tough.”It’s a first Lonsdale belt for undefeated Sykes, who is managed by Linthwaite-based Chris Aston and trained by Julian McGowan.

Tigers see Crowds Rise In the three home Superleague games so far this season Castleford Tigers have recorded an average attendance increase of over 10% for the comparative fixtures from last season. The attendance between Castleford Tigers and Wigan Warriors last month was the biggest crowd at The Jungle so far this season. It was also the highest for a fixture between the two clubs since 2006.

8,429 fans turned out to see the dramatic encounter, which saw the injury-hit Tigers give a spirited display in the 22-36 defeat to the league-leaders. Simon Mowbray, Head of Marketing and Development commented: “The increase in average attendance is very encouraging, especially considering that our opening two games were shown live on Sky Sports. “The atmosphere was electric and the family entertainment, combined with the rugby league action on the pitch, provided a high-quality day out. A visit to The Jungle guarantees a family-friendly environment with lots of fun activities for all ages to get involved with.” The next opportunity for supporters to enjoy another special experience at The Jungle is against Salford City Reds Tickets are available to buy now online 24-hours a day at www. castigers.com or on 01977 555 336.

Fighting Talk from Robins! “We owe it to everybody to keep working our socks off in every match” Mark Robins said last month after going down 0-1 to Doncaster Rovers. “We do not want to finish mid-table. We want to be higher than that. We want to go out and pick up points from every match”. As the Eye went to press the team sat at 15th with a tough run of games to come having lost 3 on the bounce. Unfortunately if the Tykes continue to show their defensive frailties that seem to have resurfaced of late they could drop into the bottom half near mind mid table....what do you think?
