I’d just like to say how I much love our new sculpture that stands in what will become the new community square and gardens beside the town hall. It’s great to see Barnsley Council thinking outside the box by putting such a great piece of contemporary art in front of such a classic building as our town hall. Martin Johnson - Town End We agree Martin! At first we weren’t sure but like most contemporary art it has made us think and it has eventually grown on us. The piece called “Vertical “ was made by sculptor Nigel Hall. It stands at 33ft and it’s valued at £1.5million. However the piece isn’t “ours” as such - it is kindly on loan from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Glass Recyling Firm Invests In Barnsley Operation A Barnsley glass recycling firm has smashed its targets for growth in the last year increasing its turnover by 50 per cent and expanding its business. GB Cullet, of Wombwell, collects unwanted double glazing units from across the UK and converts the glass panes into broken glass – or cullet – which is then used by specialist manufacturers to make new windows, bottles and jars, as well as loft insulation and the reflective beads used in road surfaces.
The Enterprising Barnsley programme is a partnership between Barnsley Development Agency (BDA) and Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre (BBIC). The programme is supported financially by the European Union. The project has attracted £2,259,511 investment into Barnsley from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development, through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme. For more information about Enterprising Barnsley go to www.enterprisingbarnsley.co.uk
Brothers Gary and Bryn Hopkins, (pictured above) who set up the company in 2004, have overseen a £500,000 investment in the business over the last year. The cash has been used to move in to larger premises and develop an on-site processing plant, where pure glass can be extracted from commercial windows and doors, which have a particularly tricky layer of laminate (PVB) running through them. With increased capacity and efficiency, the company’s turnover has already risen by 50 per cent from £1 million in 2010-11 to £1.5 million in 2011-2012. The company has recruited seven new members of staff in the last six months or so, which takes its workforce up to 20. Their rapid expansion has been supported by Enterprising Barnsley, which aims to help businesses in the borough grow. Enterprising Barnsley gave the GB Cullet team free business coaching to improve financial management, health and safety procedures and production processes too. The company’s acquisition of a 6,000 square foot building on a half acre site off Bradbury Balk Lane, Wombwell, consolidates their business in Barnsley. They previously worked from a small yard nearby, which they retain, and used a glass processing facility in Leeds. GB Cullet recycles about 400,000 tonnes of material a year collecting unwanted double glazing units from 130 sites across the north of England, the Midlands, Scotland and even South Wales. The unwanted units may be new off-cuts, spares due to errors in measurement or old units. Every by-product in the GB Cullet process, including the uPVC frames, wood, aluminium and even cardboard packaging, is 100 per cent recycled and sold on. About ten companies buy the separated materials from GB Cullet and the firm is now working with Enterprising Barnsley to improve marketing and attract new customers. Investment in the new de-laminating plant means the company can explore the market for recycling car windscreens too.

08 Eye on Books THE RADIO M. Jonathan Lee A comedy so black that youd have to eat a lot of carrots to know whether Georges adventures are actually visible. The Radio centres around the decline of the lovable, yet hapless George Poppleton, a middle-aged, henpecked father and husband who stumbles across an old transistor radio in his loft. His obsession with listening to the radio drives him on an unexpected journey, fuelled by the painful memories of the suicide of his only son many years before. M. JONATHAN LEE was born in Barnsley from 16-19 he ran a mail order collectible music store which he then sold. He went to university in Preston, travelled the world for a year and then got married and had three children. After getting a divorce four years ago, Jonathan wrote his first novel. In between seeing his children and running a tax department for an IFA, he writes whenever he can. The Radio was shortlisted for The Novel Prize 2012 and Jonathan is currently working on his second novel, The Page.

It’s always a lovely time to have a new book out – and August 1st – sees the birth of my 9th ‘child’. And how perfect that it happens to be Yorkshire Day too. I’m constantly asked if I’m running out of ideas yet and the answer to that is – no. In fact, I’ve got enough ideas to last me a life-time and a half. Life is always throwing up new plots, you just have to open your eyes and see. Newspapers are full of them. Take the egg-throwing woman on the Britain’s Got Talent final. As I was watching it, my head started spinning a story: imagine why you would do that and what the after-math would be. Would her friends stand by her? Would she lose her job? Would it bring a fellow nutter out in sympathy? The plot could be a comedic one or a sinister one, sad or funny depending on how you wanted to treat it. The plot for ‘It’s Raining Men’ was born one Sunday afternoon. I was so busy that my friend took over the usual duty of taking my mother for her supermarket shopping. It came to me, in a lightbulb moment, that if I was too busy to take my own elderly mum to a shop, then I really needed to slow down. I couldn’t remember the last time I ‘stopped to smell the roses’ so my mind started spinning a plot about three friends who worked too hard, and never got together to chat or do what they wanted to do, because they were too busy doing what they had to do. So they take a long overdue holiday together (in Yorkshire of course) intending to slow the pace of their lives down for ten glorious days in a luxurious spa. But things don’t quite go to plan and they end up in quite a different place to what they were expecting. The fictitious village of Ren Dullem is as real a place in my head as Robin Hood’s Bay. I only wish it existed in real life. There’s a marvellous café there.
first time. Will they be accepted? Will people be nice to them? Always a nail-biting time but exciting too. I just can’t believe it’s number 9 – the last time I looked up, I was only on number 4. I think I need a holiday. As usual, I’m bringing out my book with a bit of a ‘do’. This time it’s at Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall. Thursday August 1st at 6pm. Tickets cost £5 BUT you will get a slap-up Yorkshire feast, freebies from me and we’re having a fabulous Yorkshire Prize Draw to win anything from Yorkshire Teabags to luxury hampers, meals, chocolates – and of course umbrellas donated by the lovely firms of Yorkshire. The monies raised will be split between my affiliated charities – Yorkshire Cat Rescue and The Well, a complementary therapy centre for cancer patients in Barnsley. Please come and join us. There are 250 places but it’s booking up fast. There will be cake. All my novels will be on sale and I’m happy to sign them. Also happy to sign books you may have already bought – so bring them along.
Milly Tickets will be available from Sandra or Caroline at mappvillagehall@yahoo.co.uk or ring 01226 381006. It’s Raining Men, RRP £7.99, published by Pocket Books, available 1st August from bookshops and supermarkets.
And so now my 9th baby (a big one too – at least a ten-pounder) is sitting in boxes, waiting to go on shop shelves and I feel as nervous as I did when my own children went to school for the

Famous Faces Support a Coalfield Community
Keith Ellis and Stephanie Watson Mels daughter.
Mel Dyke with John Prescott and the Calender Girls).
1992 was the year Her Majesty The Queen referred to as an annus horribilis. It wasn’t that good a year for Grimethorpe either, when the announcement was made that its pit was one of thirty-one coal mines to be closed as part of the Government’s new Energy Policy. Grimethorpe Revival written by Mel Dyke is a unique archive of children’s hopes, fears, views and memories during these times when political shifts affected and risked educational potential, performance and aspiration. It reveals how a creative counter movement in a coalfield community during the bleak days of the 1990s pit closures was strengthened and supported by a namedropping backlash of heartening support wiping out boundaries of class or political slant. The local community was instantly involved, then national and international support came though. But no-one would have predicted the depth of emotion in a range of responses from Westminster Abbey to Sheffield Cathedral, the House of Commons to Buckingham Palace, London’s West End to Emmerdale and from an artichoke field in France to Coronation Street. An unprecedented range of left, right and centre political and other goodwill messages fortified the community motivating children’s writing and other activities across the curriculum at a seemingly hopeless time for mining communities. Catching up with some of those children and their famous supporters twenty years on, this book provides a comprehensive insight into previously underplayed or unpublished perspectives and memories. Through their occasionally heartbreaking but often inspirational stories we see how some have not simply survived the destruction of their community, but actually triumphed over it.

Now an Educational Consultant and speaker on the Arts in Action from Grimethorpe to Hollywood, her previously published work includes a range of diagnostic/support strategies, All for Barnsley, Barnsley & Beyond and involvement in a number of community books including The Bus to Barnsley Market and the Grimethorpe Book in a Day. 10 Eye on Hair Recently at Karl Smith Men’s Grooming we decided after nearly 4 years in this unit at the lucorum building a little revamp was needed just to keep things fresh and add a bit of interest to the shop. This has come in the form of going back to the roots of our industry. At the moment we trying to recreate the feel of an old school barber’s with a touch of gentlemen’s club thrown in for good measures. This will be achieved not just with the decor but with the uniforms as well. So far the changes have been received really well with aray of antique berbering equipment on display along with old pictures of barber shops and barber related adverts from the late 19th and early 20th century, it’s created a real talking point for us and our clients. The recent changes have been inspired by a number of things, one being the number of our clients wanting clean old school styles including side parting, quifs and modern intercaptions of rocka billy styles. (right). This style has been created using two great products from Structure. Beach sea salt spray and Twist styling Gum. Whilst the hair is damp spray in the beach spray and start blowdry the hair thaw sea salt in the spray gives the hair great volume and control meaning not much styling product is needed on this occasion we used Twist styling Gum, which gave us a great shine on the finished style without setting solid.
Along with all the changes we are still offering a great wet shave experience and at the moment you can get a cut and furnish and a wet shave for just £20. This is a great way to wind down after a hard day at work. For an appointment just telephone 01226 208555 or pop in and see us at The Thomas Whitworth Forum / Hanson St. S70 2HZ

Eye on Health & Fitness CERVICAL CANCER
Do You Stand Up Straight? The Barnsley Eye spoke with fitness expert Shane Williams at Lifestyle Fitness on Peel Parade to get the insight on how Posture can make you look taller, slimmer and more confident.
Cervical cancer is the twelfth most common cancer in women in the UK. There are around 2,800 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year. Around 940 women die from cervical cancer every year (Cancer Research UK, 2010)
When it comes to posture, if you were frequently reminded to stand up straight and stop slouching then that was good advice. Your spine is strong and stable when you practice healthy posture, but when you stoop or slouch, your muscles and ligaments struggle to keep you balanced which can lead to fatigue, back pain, headaches, and other problems. Good posture minimises strain on your joints and muscles which can help prevent aches and pains. What’s good posture? When you’re standing, keep your chest held high and your shoulders back and relaxed. Try not to tilt your head forward, backward, or sideways. Pull in your abdomen and buttocks. Make sure your knees are relaxed, not locked. Keep your feet parallel and your weight balanced evenly on both feet. It’s amazing how something as simple as good posture can make someone look taller, slimmer and more confident.
Shane Williams 2013
Cervical cancer is more common if you; Do not attend for cervical screening Smoke Have had multiple sexual partners A weakened immune system Cervical cancer can take many years to develop. Before this happens, changes occur within the cells of the cervix. These changes are called cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) and sometimes referred to as pre cancerous changes. Regular cervical screening can help in picking up these early changes and prevent a cancer from developing. Treatment is easy and effective. Women should attend for regular cervical screening. Cervical screening is offered to all women aged between 25 and 64. Between the ages of 25 and 49 you will receive invitations to attend 3 yearly, from the age of 50 – 64 this will be 5 yearly. Changes in the cells of the cervix are often associated with HPV (Human Papilloma virus). This is transmitted by sexual intercourse. HPV shows no symptoms and most women are affected at some point in their lives. From 2008 a national immunization programme provides HPV vaccination to girls of 12 and 13 years that provides protection against viruses that cause about 70% of cervical cancers. Symptoms to watch out for include; Bleeding during or after intercourse Bleeding between periods Bleeding following the menopause Unpleasant vaginal discharge Discomfort and pain during intercourse
www.lifestylefitness.co.uk
These symptoms may be signs of other common conditions but should always be checked out by your doctor.

Colour Your Summer Beach Style
We showcase three of the best slimming swimsuits available this Summer from retailer M & Co.
It’s been so long since you saw your beachwear you probably can’t remember what it looks like! Follow my tips to ensure you look good all day! Lucky enough to have a neat hourglass figure? (shoulders and hips in line with defined waist) then anything goes. Two piece or one piece, both should enhance your waistline.
Agua Clara Fuller bust? You will need support in the form of an underwired bikini top or one piece suit with built in cups. Try suits with an all over print or print on the bottom half to draw attention away from the bust area. Triangle or pear shape with fuller hips and thighs? Wear a patterned or detailed top half to draw attention to your neat shoulders and bust. Use simple lines on the bottom half either in a darker colour or plain design. Key rule: don’t let the fabric finish at your widest part!
For an athletic lean column figure, use a padded top and use embellishment galore on top and bottom. Fabrics with curved patterns or waist cut outs work well to give the illusion of curves. No waist or a round shape? Try adding detail to neck and bust line (colour, embroidery, one shoulder designs) and also the hips. A Tankini is great for disguising full tummies, but they should be looser fitting to prevent the material from riding up.

Café Naaz
Cafe Naaz - From India With Love For a lot of people, ‘going for a curry’ is usually associated with a night out drinking and then popping into the local curry house on the way home for a Vindaloo. However one local restaurant are trying to break that cycle and instead are encouraging diners to come along to their impressive restaurant and enjoy the finest in Indian cuisine in equally impressive surroundings. Café Naaz in the middle of Wath town centre comes along as a very welcome change to your average Indian restaurant.
The Star Readers’ Choice Restaurant of the Year 2011
Situated on Sandygate, in the heart of Wath-Upon-Dearne, Cafe Naaz is both warm and welcoming with its stone walls and feature windows. Inside, high quality leather armchairs around chunky wooden tables, reflects on the high standards to which the restaurant has been finished. And with modern lighting and quality wooden flooring adding a touch of elegance, the restaurant would beat most city rivals. The restaurant was opened over two years ago by Naz Hoque whose aspirations for his business have always been very clear “Our aim is to produce cutting edge Indian cuisine which uses fresh ingredients to produce dishes that people will want to return to eat time and time again. The quality of the surroundings and our staff is also very important to us and we pride ourselves in providing the very best for our customers.” The proof in the pudding so to speak is the fact that last year Café Naaz was voted restaurant of the year by the readers of the ‘Sheffield Star’ newspaper.

Queens of The Stone Age - “....Like Clockwork”
Welcome back Queens of the Stone Age! It’s been six years since the band last released ‘Era Vulgaris,’ and on several listens to their latest offering it’s apparent that the pile-driving rhythms and dense layers of guitars of old seem to have been replaced by more space that allow guitars to weave in and out of each other while synths bubble beneath the surface. The album opens with the darkly intoxicating opener ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled,’ but things venture into more accessible territory with the almost Blur-esque ‘I Sat By the Ocean.’ This traditional rocker features an infectious guitar lick and a swagger that just swings. The Mighty Dave Grohl sits on the drum stool again for the most part, providing a solid base to the band’s sound – although the prominence of new bassist, Michael Shuman, should equally be underscored. Lead Queen Josh Homme’s guitar work remains proficient still flaunting in the grunge realm, the overall result is tough, yet accessible, including some deeper moments. Though much has been made of the album’s guest appearances – Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, Trent Reznor, Screeming Tree frontman Mark Lanegan, Alex Turner, (on album highlight ‘If I had a Tail’) and Sir Elton John (weirdly brilliant by the way on the semi operatic ‘Fairweathered Friends’ ) – there’s nothing they do that pricks up the ears to make each of their contributions stand out. Perhaps that was plan as Homme re-asserts his leadership over the band. With just 10 tracks …Like Clockwork benefits from being a concise effort. It’s also best heard in a single sitting rather than cherry picking tracks for your playlist and for this Queens Of The Stone Age should be applauded. Still this said it isn’t album to fall in love with at first listen; as its many dense layers take time to appreciate - urgent rocker ‘My God is the Sun’ is the most radio friendly song on here hense the reason it was chosen as the lead single although the brutal bass and drums rival anything I have heard in years. Where Queens of the Stone Age go from here is anybody’s guess but the hope remains that, by settling into this new groove, they will continue to expand their unique rock & roll in the 21st century, for now “...Like Clockwork’ comes off as a timeless piece of music that would rock in any era. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gaz Milburn

Band Review Algiers
Algiers are a two piece indie drum and guitar/vocal combo based in Sheffield .
Single Review Sam Dickinson - “How It Used To Be” The North of England isn’t the first place you’d look to find the UK’s next big soul star, is it? Introducing Sam Dickinson and his debut single “How it Used to Be” How It Used to Be’ is taken from his debut album ‘The Stories That Occurred’. The Newcastle born singer songwriter has evidently been making waves in the North East of England, having been described by some of the biggest media sources in the North East as having “powerful vocals” (Metro Radio) with “songs from the soul” (Evening Chronicle) and “About to take the soul world by storm” (The Crack Magazine). It’s time for the UK to hear what he has to offer. ‘How It Used To Be’ is two and a half minutes of soul seduction which Dickinson co-written alongside Charlie Little and Cav Mulryan. Produced by the renowned production team at Loft Music Studios who have worked with Sony, Universal, Amelia Lily and Smoove and Turrell in a studio where Jimi Hendrix was rumoured to have once recorded, ‘How It Used to be’ opens the phenomenal debut ‘The Stories That Occurred’ which is laden with MoTown infused beats and high energy brass. In ‘The Stories That Occurred’ Dickinson writes on every track with a host of different writers, including multi-platinum songwriter Paul Britt (Szilvia, Ronan Parke). Unlike the plethora of soul acts beginning to appear in the North East, Dickinson is at the forefront. How many others have had the backing of Soul UK icons such as Gabrielle, Beverley Knight and Mica Paris? Following charting in YouTube’s Top 40 he has played festivals and toured around the North of England. This summer Sam Dickinson will be bringing his show around the UK visit www.samdickinsononline.com for details.
Mixing the best parts of their two previous bands (Maple State and Dartz!) John Goodwin and William Anderson have created something which could easily be described as post-punk pop - however before you start to think because it’s just drums and guitars that Algiers are a Black-Keysesque two-piece who make a racket think again as their wandering guitars and heart-on-sleeve vocals make them much more than an act you can pigeon-hole to one style. Their release You’re The Captain recorded and mixed by Kev Foy and Algiers at Dig Studios, Manchester is an expansive and joyous affair available to listen to at https://soundcloud.com/ wearealgiers. If you are keen on bands like Two Gallants, Phoenix and Death Cab For Cutie then Algiers will be right up your street. GM Algiers play Tramlines Festival, The Bowery, Sheffield - July 21st 2013

Flitcroft Sets Fans A Challenge for New Season David Flitcroft has set a challenge to Reds fans to get behind the Club for the 2013/14 season. As renewal forms for season tickets hit the doorsteps, it represents an important time for the Club as Flitcroft shapes the team for a new season full of new challenges. Flitcroft outlined his thoughts on what we witnessed in 2013 and his positive feelings for the new season ahead: Dear fellow supporter, I would like to thank you for the support you gave to me, my staff and especially OUR fantastic players. Without that support I would not be writing this letter or managing OUR great club. You voted with your voices to put me in this post as your manager. You will never know what that means to me and how proud my family was of what we ALL achieved together as a Club. In your greatest achievements or your lowest moments, your family’s support will always remain unconditional. You have welcomed me and my staff into the Barnsley family. Thank you, I will give you my ALL. The final game of the season at Huddersfield was extraordinary in every aspect. The way the Club, you - the Supporters - and players performed was exemplary. Crystal Palace didn’t save US. The results and momentum saved US. We, as a Club, saved ourselves. Together we stood, together we fought, together we achieved OUR goal - Championship football.
Club are looking at ways that we can perform OFF the pitch. You, the supporters, deserve that. You are Championship fans and we, as a club, want to make your Saturday and Tuesday nights special. I want ALL the teams we play to feel the strength and spirit of our stadium. That support and strength drove OUR team to beat the very best the Championship had to offer. I am asking you once again to support OUR ambition and drive us forward from the terraces. All monies raised from ALL areas of stadium will help drive our budget upwards. I can guarantee that OUR players will give you their ALL, my staff will give their all and I will lead them to give US everything they have. We will have to overachieve next season. Overachieving is about everyone working as one - can we, as a town, overachieve before the season and get 10,000 fans to commit to a season ticket? Anything is possible if you dare to dream, dare to believe and dare to do. Together we can dream, together we can do, together we can believe and together we will achieve. Thank you. We can’t wait to see you all at Oakwell at the start of the season.
Your Manager, David Flitcroft.
The memories we made that day will live with me forever. The players fought for their right to remain Championship players. Your support matched that fight and you are in your deserved place as Championship fans. In my short tenure I asked the board to back me in treating the players as Championship players. They did and the players responded magnificently. We performed on the pitch and now the

2003 - 2013
What were you doing in December 2003? We here at The Barnsley Eye certainly remember the above date.......it was when the very FIRST issue of the Eye was produced. (right): It seems like ages ago and in that time the magazine has had it’s fair share of ups and downs especially in tough economic times but 5 things have always remained in our ethos throughout the 106 issues we have produced... 1. We strive to give away a quality FREE glossy publication to the people of Barnsley no matter who you are; rich or poor, young or old...it’s YOUR magazine! 2. We make sure that the news stories are always and of interest to everyday local people, not bringing about doom and gloom or touching on boring, controversial or political issues. 3. We always include a letters section where people are free to express themselves in any way they wish - we very rarely edit down these letters. 4. We try not to overload the magazine with adverts. Indeed - it is with the aid of revenue raised by advertising that the magazine can continue to be produced but we make sure there is always a balance between articles, columns, competitions, news, pictures and advertisements. 5. Where possible we use local people to produce the magazine and always give the public every opportunity to get involved through their own columns, writing, photography and art.
