My Little Eye 04 Mine’s a Shandy Please!
One of the best, most welcoming, sights in a British boozer is the presence of a pub pooch. Lazing by an open fire. Fresh from a walk. Sniffing out recent canine visitors. Eating dropped pork scratchings. Fussed over by other drinkers. “What his name? It is a he or she?” They’re an essential part of what makes British pubs so great. The perfect pub, for me, doesn’t need a theme, posh fonts, settees, big screens, assorted bric-a-brac bolted to the walls. Plenty of pubs try for the winning formula. Many get it wrong. Personally, it needs to have a sign dangling outside, preferably hand painted, hand pulled ale, (that’s an absolute must), a bandit, a dartboard and no kids the minute I spot a pram or a ball pool - I’m walking by. But most of all.... it’s got to have a four legged friend inside. Above is a photo of “Shandy” who I dropped on one day in The Blacksmiths Arms, Naburn. “Shandy” the pubs resident dog was fast asleep in a basket as I tucked into my cavery. She opened her eyes for the photo – then went straight back to sleep! Like all the best pub pooches! If you spot a dog in a pub, and I know Barnsley has some absolute beauties - take a snap and send it to us here at the Barnsley Eye. G.Milburn
Eye Remember When...
When you are young you fear nothing. As you get a little longer in the tooth things start to scare you more. I found this out last month on my families holiday to Blackpool. Terrified is not the word. G.Milburn

06 Eye on Local News Royston Re-Open Teaching Pool
Last month saw the re-opening of the Teaching Pool at Royston Leisure Centre following a £100,000 refurbishment. The project has taken 6 weeks to complete with the addition of a new roof, internal ceiling, wall panels, lighting and heating. Councillors Tim Cheetham and Tracey Cheetham officially opened the new pool area along with BPL chief executive Tim Wilson and Facility Manager for Dearneside & Royston Leisure Centre, Martin Prest. (all pictured above) Councillor Tim and Tracey Cheetham were delighted to cut the ribbon:“BMBC have been heavily involved with the project so I was honoured to attend the opening. It’s fantastic to see Royston Leisure Centre getting the refurbishment it needs – it is an essential facility for our community. Tim learnt to swim at this leisure centre when he was a child and all three of our children have, and still are, learning to swim here, so this really means a lot to us” Tracey Cheetham commented. Martin Prest said “The project has taken around 6 weeks to complete and a substantial financial investment but it’s great to see the refurbishment completed. It has been a joint partnership project between BPL and BMBC and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved and to thank the public for their patience and support whilst the project was being carried out”

Chamber Welcomes Job Figures Commenting on the labour market figures published today by the ONS, Andrew Denniff, (Right) Executive Director at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “The latest improvement in job market figures are encouraging and do support the Chamber’s view that the economy has returned to a slow, but positive growth in the third quarter of 2012. “There is movement in the right direction and the fall is hopefully a positive development, indicating that in certain sectors people are returning to the workforce. This trend in the labour market does challenge the accuracy of recent figures which are still showing three consecutive declines over the period to the second quarter of 2012. “An effective growth strategy should include further deregulation, increased infrastructure spending, and rapid implementation of the decision to create a business bank. As the trend in employment hopefully continues, the Government should not hesitate to reduce employer National Insurance contributions to improve businesses’ ability to take on staff.”

together and this exhibition has been developed by the artists, giving them an opportunity to present themselves and their own voices, outside of a curatorial vision. Light and Line is a Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery touring exhibition, funded by Arts Council England (Lottery Funding).
Polly Binns and Anne Morrell met over 30 years ago and, whilst a decade separates them and they have very different career histories and working methods, they share a dedication to making. Both artists use stitch as structural and mark-making components in the development of their images and ideas. Polly works directly on to the material, letting the journey of the stitch flow immediately; Anne works with an idea at the beginning of the process which then develops and changes in the making.
The exhibition is open 22.11.12 – 04.01.13
Both artists also share a fascination with the light and texture of landscape. Anne uses stitch to capture closely-observed moments in nature: ‘I look at the sky; I look down on the ground; and I find marks made visible by wind, ice and snow. All create a language.’ Polly’s continuing relationship with landscape is a powerful source of inspiration for her work, found both in its minutest detail and in the vast, shifting planes of land, sea and sky on the North Norfolk coast near her home. This will be the first time that Polly and Anne have shown

14 Eye on Health & Fitness RESISTANCE ISN’T FUTILE!
by BPL Fitness Instructor Mark Elliott
Resistance training equipment comes in many forms, from dumbbells and resistance bands costing a few pounds, to hi-tech machines costing thousands. There are also bodyweight exercises, such as press-ups, which you can easily do at home. So which is best? If you’re working against enough resistance - even if your technique isn’t spot on - you will see results using any type of equipment. On the other hand, you could be a sophisticated piece of gym equipment combined with perfect technique, but if the load isn’t challenging enough your results will be minimal. Let’s look at a few of the options: RESISTANCE MACHINES It is important to attend a gym, such as BPL centres, with well designed machines that include adjustable seats and handles, modifiable ranges of movement and a variety of hand grips. A properly equipped fitness centre will also have machines which are suitable for wheelchair users. Resistance machines are generally easy to use with the convenience of weight stacks. FREEWEIGHTS Freeweights are just that: weights that are ‘free’ rather than being tethered to a machine, such as dumbbells and barbells. The big advantage of free weights is variety; they can be used for countless biomechanically correct exercises. It’s unfortunate that many people shy away from free weights regarding them as tools reserved only for bodybuilders and weightlifters. Depending on how they are used, free weights are also excellent for building endurance, as calorie burners in a fat loss programme and for those who just want to firm up their muscles. CABLE PULLEY MACHINES Although free weights typically have the edge over machine exercises, a notable exception is cable pulley machines. Take the dumbbell flye for instance. This chest exercise involves lying on a flat bench, holding the dumbbells above your chest, and lowering them in a wide arc before returning to the original position. The furthest you can take this movement to is the point where the dumbbells touch together. Do the same exercise on a cable crossover machine and you can allow your hands to cross over each other to recruit more muscle fibres in the chest. In the dumbbell side lateral raise, an exercise in which you hold a dumbbell in each hand and raise your arms until parallel with the floor, there is a flat spot when your arms are hanging at your sides at the bottom of the movement where you are doing little more than resisting the downward pull of gravity. Do the same exercise on a cable machine, and your shoulder muscles are still being held under tension as you resist the cable pulling your arm across your body. Remember a qualified fitness instructor can help you ensure you get the most out of your exercise regime without risking injury. BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES/CALISTHENICS Bodyweight exercises tend to be either too hard or too easy for most people, and on the occasions where the weight feels just right, it very soon becomes too easy. This makes progression difficult using bodyweight alone. There’s nothing wrong with bodyweight exercises, it’s just that you can’t rely on them indefinitely if you want to make progress without having to resort to other methods. Increasing repetitions is not the answer. So to conclude - each type of exercise has its strengths provided you enjoy it, find the movements comfortable and natural, and can take your muscles to momentary fatigue at around 6-15 repetitions. It is good to have variety in your workout. If you need any help determining the best exercise programme for you, ask one of the instructors at your gym or come to see us at BPL.

The Bowen Technique – can you benefit from this therapeutic offer? Have you heard of the Bowen Technique? Although it is becoming more well known in Britain most people have not heard of it. I have been doing this therapy for two years and quite honestly I am amazed by its effects. It is relaxing and restorative and truly balancing for the whole body. I have also found it to have beneficial effects both mentally and spiritually So what is the Bowen Technique? Bowen Technique is a fairly new therapy having been developed in Australia by Tom Bowen during the last century. Tom had an amazing ability to read bodies. His main gift was an amazing ability to spot structural imbalances and identify where these originated. Tom Bowen worked in his own clinic in Australia treating up to 13000 patients every year. He died in 1982. The Bowen Technique is a very gentle technique. The practitioner uses their thumbs and fingers to make a series of precise rolling type moves over the muscle. The theory is that the gentle moves prompt the body’s inbuilt ability to relieve pain and restriction and imbalance. It is very gentle and many people find it deeply relaxing. There is no deep tissue work or fast movements as in chiropractic and there is no massage. The main feature of the treatment is that having performed three or four movements over muscle the practitioner leaves the room for a few minutes to allow the brain to receive messages initiated by the moves and to start the process of repair. The breaks are a very important part of the treatment. The effects of the treatment vary from person to person. It can bring about immediate improvements The patient may equally leave the treatment room with no immediate improvement but can experience changes over the next week. Sometimes the reactions are felt with aching and stiffness and tiredness. The moves are very subtle and any reaction demonstrates how profound the treatment can be. After care advice emphasises the importance of drinking plenty of water, keeping the body moving and above all returning for the next treatment, further treatments are essential if the full benefit is to be felt. Most sports or work related problems will be dealt with within two or three treatments so Bowen is also cost effective for the client. So what conditions can Bowen help? The Bowen Technique can help almost everything. But it is important to say that we do not treat specific conditions, we treat the whole person. Many people who come for treatment suffer muscular skeletal problems such as frozen shoulder, back and neck problems but people can present with asthma, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome infertility and hayfever and much more. It is increasingly used in the treatment of sporting injuries and many sports clubs are showing interest.
know what treatment the person is receiving. The therapist will not interfere with any medication prescribed by a doctor. We will also discuss how the problem is affecting the client in daily life. The therapist will also look at the clients posture as this has a great effect on pain. The client does not have to remove clothing for the treatment unless it is heavy or bulky. It is suggested that the client wears light clothing or brings something to change into. The client is then asked to lie face down on the treatment couch and usually covered with a towel or light blanket. As already mentioned a series of very gentle movements are used and the client is left alone for short periods to allow the recovery to begin. Following the treatment the client is advised to drink water for its cleansing action but also as a lubricant for the body. The client is also advised to keep moving regularly and not to stay in one position for long periods, eg watching TV. They should also return a week later for the next treatment. Many problems are resolved in as few as two or three treatments so continued treatments are usually not necessary. Some people like to book maintenance treatments every month or so. When having a course of Bowen Technique it is recommended not to mix it with other therapies. The brain is constantly receiving and interpreting signals from the body and it is important not to mix the signals. This does not mean that other therapies are not valued but it allows the process of Bowen to have a chance to be effective. Once a course of treatment is finished the client can return to another favoured therapy. We usually recommend a space of a week in order to give a clear chance to Bowen to work before recommencing other therapies. As with all therapies there are no guarantees of success. The beauty of Bowen is that it is offered. If the body accepts it then it will begin a process of repair that can be quite amazing. If the body doesn’t accept it then no harm will be done. Would you like to try it? In November and December I am offering the opportunity to try the Bowen Technique for half the normal price. Please phone me using the number below for further information and to make your booking. It is also an opportunity to buy this treatment as a gift. Maria Nortcliffe MAR. MICHT Cert ECBS
Who can benefit from Bowen Technique? The answer to that is almost anyone. It is an incredibly gentle therapy and can be used at any age from the smallest baby to the frailest adults. It has no contra indications and can be used even in acute situations. The thing to remember is that we work holistically, the body is treated as a whole without referral to a specific disease. We do not treat the disease we treat the person. So what happens during a treatment session? On arrival, as with all therapies, the session begins with a consultation. It is important to know what is going on with the client, for example, how an injury has happened or what condition the client is suffering. It is important to

Baroque, Lace, Velvet, or Sparkle? So much inspiration for the party season! The high street is pulling out all the stops to get us in the party mood without spending too much. Whether you want top to toe or just a small pick me up to feel fabulous, follow our guide to this seasons must haves.
Baroque rocks
Baroque is simply the name given to the pattern inspired by lavish historical styles. However this has inspired many catwalk and high street looks, so be prepared for bold gold and silver pattern. As an alternative, there are lots of ‘burn out’ fabrics with delicate lace or chiffon showing through a heavier velvet baroque pattern.
Lace never goes out of style as it is so versatile and feminine. This season’s lace ranges from the gothic black and dark green statements to feminine shift dresses. Lace pattern is also being printed onto inexpensive items to give a luxe look.
T
he Country Heritage look is one of the biggest trends out there this autumn. Tweed, feathers, furs, flat caps, equestrian-style boots and waxed quilted jackets, once the preserve of the countryside and the hunting, shooting and fishing brigade, suddenly seem like the chicest option even for urbanites not planning on going anywhere near a field. And it’s all down to the Burberry Prorsum Autumn Winter 2012 catwalk show: with the somewhat bygone era-sounding theme of ‘town and country’, it took the staple wardrobe pieces required for braving the great outdoors and put a cool new spin on them, making Country Heritage a coveted and desirable trend. As well as traditional tweed, Burberry incorporated Arts and Crafts-inspired woven florals with a country feel into the collection, which, along with the addition of bow belts around the models’ waists and velvet detailing, put a feminine spin on what is generally considered to be very much a masculine trend. And it is the now iconic illustrated owl emblem (along with other woodland creatures including foxes, dogs and sparrows) that featured on jumpers and t-shirts on the Burberry runway that have really made the trend xgo stellar, and have spawned a thousand high street lookalikes in their wake. While a cute owl jumper is a wise way to invest in the look, other elements of the Country Heritage trend are everywhere on the high street, too. Quirky tweed hats with feathers can be worn with a tweed or waxed coat or jacket, chunky knits can be teamed with tweed skirts and trousers, and 60sstyle tweed pointed flats are a subtle way to incorporate the trend into your everyday wardrobe. The beauty of this trend is that whether you wear just one item or fully embrace the look, including some element of Country Heritage in an outfit will give you an instant new season wardrobe update.

Velvet
Another style staple! The dark, gothic styles from the catwalks have led to a resurgence of velvet, especially trousers and jackets. These are an easy way to make an outfit feel more evening or luxury. A blazer can easily be updated with a pair of velvet trousers for a different look.

We all like a bit of sparkle at Christmas! Just remember that sparkle, embellishment and sequins add volume and bulk, always wear them to accentuate your best bits. Try a sparkly handbag, pair of tights or shoes to add some festive style to a plainer outfit. I do believe that Barnsley has the most stylish ladies in the land – so go to it!

‘IT’S PANTO TIME AGAIN AT THE LAMPROOM’ This year’s pantomime at The Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley is ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, and features friends old and new, as well as the dancers from The Jay Bee Theatre School. Producer Phil Shepherd has engaged a professional cast of familiar Lamproom favourites, along with some new faces for the traditional family pantomime that Lamproom audiences have come to expect. Peter Foster is ‘Muddles’, the jester to the Wicked Queen. Peter has appeared in most of the pantomimes at The Lamproom, and the more eagle-eyed audience members will have recognised him on ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Emmerdale’. Bethany Hague is ‘Snow White’, and first trained as a dancer with The Jay Bee Dance School, from the age of four. She left Barnsley at the age of thirteen, gaining a scholarship to The Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. Playing Snow White’s ‘Wicked Stepmother’ is another Barnsley-born actress, Amie Stone. Amie played Prince Charming in last year’s pantomime, ‘Cinderella’, but this year is looking forward to playing the baddie! Another Lamproom pantomime favourite, Ross McCormack will be looking forward to dusting off his high heels and wig to play ‘Nurse Gertie’, whilst a new face to The Lamproom Theatre, Aiden Adams joins the team in the role of ‘Prince Daniel’. Over forty performances are taking place between Saturday 8 and Sunday 30 December, with many of the traditional schools shows already sold out. ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ is one of the mainstays of the pantomime season and in these days of austerity we could all perhaps do with a real life Prince Charming; as such the tickets are generously priced at £14 each, with Family Tickets (2 adults and 2 children) at a bargain £44.00
