Former University Campus Barnsley (UCB) music student Monika Godlewska is a chart star after her debut single “Clouds” Clouds” went to number one in the Radio Bartoszyce music charts in Poland. Monika, who studied BA(Hons) in Popular Music, has also performed at several concerts and a prestigious gallery opening in Poland over the summer. Monika, who is a model and actress, grew up in Poland and came to Barnsley to study in 2007 with her partner Pawel Zimny, a composer, guitarist and drummer. The pair married in July 2012 and are in the process of recording an album of 17 original songs, in both English and Polish. Although now living in Poland, Monika returns to the UK frequently to play the female lead in ‘Two Gunned Saint’ an action/thriller feature film by Joshua Fowler, to be released next summer. In 2011 a photograph of Monika (Right) taken by Jericho Soh won the best photo in the Professional Photographer of the Year Awards organized by Professional Photographer Magazine UK. Monika has appeared on the cover of various magazines and is also a catwalk model and has modelled at London Fashion Week and various bridal shows. In her spare time Monika is involved in charity work in Africa, Poland and the UK and as well as concentrating on her music, she is looking to either pursue her acting by studying for an MA in Screen Acting in London, Lee Strasberg Acting in New York or Applied Human Rights in York.
Monika (pictured above) said: “I encourage everyone to believe in the impossible; I came from a small village with less than 50 homes and have always believed that with a good education and strong will, you can achieve your dreams.”

BBIC Helps Barnsley Businesses Outgrow Premises Business support at Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre (BBIC) is proving so successful that a number of businesses have outgrown their premises. Two companies have recently moved from the business centre in Wilthorpe to their own premises in Barnsley. Single Use Surgical started its journey at BBIC 11 years ago as members of the very first GENESIS business programme. The GENESIS programme was started in 2002 as a business incubation programme providing intensive support to eligible businesses for up to 12 months, offering dedicated mentoring and access to business development workshops to new/early stage businesses based in Barnsley. Single Use Surgical manufactures high quality single-use fine surgical suction tubes and the business was set up in response to growing concerns over the cleaning of reusable fine lumen instruments. 16 members of staff now work for the company which decided it needed more space and a new home for increasing levels of stock The business currently turns over around £2million per annum, and is hoping to double this to £4m over the next few years. Folio Albums is a similar success story with the business tripling in size since starting at BBIC in May 2010. Folio Albums makes and supplies fine art wedding and portrait albums for professional photographers. The business was set up by Stuart and Julie Randall who have now expanded to Shortwood Business Park in the Barnsley borough. Lyndsey Maw, Operations Manager of BBIC, explained: “We are so pleased for both Single Use Surgical and Folio Albums for their business growth and continuing success. It is also excellent news that both businesses are staying local to Barnsley which falls in line with our company mission to help businesses grow and assist economic growth in the Borough.” Due to the success of Single Use Surgical and Folio Albums, BBIC have a number of business units available at their Wilthorpe site ranging from 500 square feet to over 1500 square feet.
For information about locating or re-locating to the BBIC, contact Lyndsey Maw on 01226 249590 December 2013 | Barnsley Eye

08 Eye on Local News Rotary Club of Barnsley’s 90th Charter Celebration Tuesday 12th November saw Barnsley Rotary celebrate their 90th Charter held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Barnsley. They also hosted many other Rotary Clubs and their members from Region 1270. The club were also honoured that District Governor of Region 1270, Simon Kalson could attend. After a delicious meal laid on by the Holiday Inn, served very professionally by the staff, they were fortunate to have excellent speakers that responded to the many toasts made on behalf of the organisation to Barnsley Rotary. District Governor Simon Kalson gave the response to the toast to RI & RIBI that was given by Past President Wendy Bell MBE and he praised Barnsley Rotary for their excellent work locally and Internationally. President of Barnsley Rockley Rotary Club Stephen Woodcock gave the toast to the Rotary Club of Barnsley and he too praised the club for the outstanding work they do. The evening drew to an end when Chairman of Barnsley Inner Wheel Hilary Frances (right) presented President Ann Kelly with a fob for the chain of office celebrating their 90th birthday. It was a very thoughtful gesture and the ‘90’ will look excellent on the chain. There were many comments on just how fantastic the evening at the Holiday Inn was.
Barnsley Hedgehogs Brave the Cold There have been a number of Barnsley Hedgehogs resisting the temptation to hibernate this year and the reason is.....US! A number of Barnsley folk have been feeding hedgehogs throughout the Autumn meaning that they have been less inclined to hibernate. Hedgehog expert Malcolm Stafford said “If we continue to feed them they will stay awake. After all why would they feel the need to go into hiberantion if food was readily available. Who knows in years to come they could be domesticated just like a cat or dog....only more prickley!!!”
Barnsley Ballet Dancer Tala at The Bolshoi Academy You may remember last year we brought you a story about Tala Lee-Turton, aged 17, from Wombwell, who was looking at raising money to train at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. After successfully raising funds Tala is currently in her second year of study. She was only the 9th Brit to be offered a place at the Academy in its 239 year history when she began her four year programme in August 2012. She is able to attend many performances at the Bolshoi Theatre, obtaining student tickets to see the dancers of the Bolshoi as well as visiting companies Paris Opera Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet to name just two. She is also exploring Moscow, in particular the vegetarian restaurants, but being only ten minutes on the Metro from the centre, she gets to see the Kremlin, St Basil’s Cathedral and all the other famous and recognisable sights of Moscow as much as she can. The Russian method of training is tough but effective – and Tala feels that she improves with each day of training. She spent her first year studying dance - ballet, character, historical, modern, gymnastics and acting - alongside the Russian language. In her second year, now that she has a grasp of the Russian language, she also studies the Russian equivalent of A levels - in Russian - and so is very busy packing in both vocational training and academic studies.

10 Eye on Health & Fitness The ‘Truebeam’
“I Don’t Skip Exercise!” The Barnsley Eye spoke with fitness expert Shane Williams at Lifestyle Fitness on Peel Parade to get the insight on how a simple change of language can change the temptation to skip exercise.
Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield are launching a new Radiotherapy Treatment machine, ‘Truebeam’ liner accelerator, in November 2013.
What is Radiotherapy? Radiotherapy is an up to date modern treatment, that uses high energy x-rays and similar rays (such as electrons) to treat disease, which has a high rate of success.2. Remember, If in doubt, it needs checking out!!
When facing temptation, can a simple change of language make a difference? According to a study in the Journal of Consumer Research, consumers who respond to temptation with the words “I don’t” versus “I can’t” are more able to resist. This insight is based on the notion that saying, ”I can’t“ to temptation inherently signals deprivation and the loss from giving up something desirable,” the study authors write. “For instance, when faced with a tempting slice of pie, one’s spontaneous response, ‘I can’t eat pie’ signals deprivation. Saying “I don’t eat pie’ is more effective.” This approach signals to oneself (and others) a sense of determination and empowerment, which makes the refusal strategy more effective. The “I don’t” strategy increased participants’ feelings of autonomy, control, and self-awareness; and it resulted in positive behavioural change. “What’s great about this research is that it suggests a strategy that is simple, straightforward, and easy to implement. And most importantly…it works!
Shane Williams 2013
What are the benefits of the ‘Truebeam Linear Accelerator? The new machine can deliver the radiation dose faster than previous linacs, they are also able to take a whole range of images of the patient before, during and after treatment is given. This will allow for more accurate and efficient treatment. The new machine is going to keep us in the premier league of English radiotherapy centre’s for the next 10 years!
Technology? There is some fantastic technology behind modern radiotherapy treatment – the computing power behind the scene which calculates patients’ treatments and the precision engineering and the design of the machine.
The Teams? There is a huge team of highly skilled staff making sure it all works as well as possible, from the Doctors and Radiographers through to the Engineers, Dosimetrists and Physicists.
Weston Park Hospital keep themselves on the forefront through research and trails. Treatment is carried out in a dignified and safe environment resulting in a minimum amount of discomfort for the patient. There are many myths about radiotherapy with one being a burning sensation during treatment. Patients will not smell or feel any burning during their radiotherapy treatment and contact the hospital if there are any concerns. Mediation Lessens The Blow of Separation and Divorce Owners, and trained mediators, Juliette Dalrymple and Stan Angel (pictured on the left - far left and centre) have a varied background of working with children and families and are members of the College of Mediators. They are supported by a team of trained, experienced, knowledgeable and friendly mediators, all accredited with the Legal Aid Agency. Rachel Renwick (right) is a trained family mediator is also a qualified solicitor, previously practicing in South Yorkshire. She has extensive experience of working with families and young children. Family Matters complies with the UK Family Mediation Council Code of Practice for Mediators. Its own best practice guidance can be found here
It’s difficult to see the future clearly during the trauma of divorce or seperation. Mediation can help. Mediation allows seperating couples (and/or other family members) to meet in a neutral place to agree upon important issues relating to family and finances. Children can also be consulted and their views taken into account. Mediation minimises distress, improves communication, reduces misunderstanding, is non-confrontational, confidential and dignified, and can be more cost effective and timely than going to court. Family Matters is a leading, independent, mediation firm in Barnsley. Qualified, experienced mediators discuss seperating couples’ next steps in safe, comfortable, local surroundings.
http://www.familymattersmediate.co.uk/professional_standards.php Public funding is available for mediation so you may qualify for legal aid. If not, Family Matters offers a range of affordable funding options, including fixed fee arrangements. To find out how mediation can help you, visit Family Matters website or contact Rachel to arrange an individual, confidential discussion.

“Goodbye” - JLS Call it a Day
Life of Pi
Over four years in the making and crafted by a team of three thousand creatives, the grandeur and scale of Oscar-winning Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (2012) was always going to be MASSIVE! Lee’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling novel isn’t simply limited to its production history. With a healthy claim to being the most expensive arthouse film of all time (don’t be fooled by the Fox logo above the door), Lee has successfully married some of this year’s most sumptuous visuals with one of its most compelling and unashamedly spiritual stories; the titular Pi (newcomer Suraj Sharma) battling with the Almighty as he floats across the vast Pacific Ocean. Structured (as with Martel’s original text) as a series of vivid flashbacks, a middle-aged Piscine Molitor ‘Pi’ Patel (Irrfan Khan) recounts the pivotal event of his sensational life to an avid novelist (Rafe Spall). Beginning with his childhood in Pondicherry, French India, Pi is ushered onto a doomed Japanese freighter, which consequently sinks during a storm. Cast out into the ocean with only a tiger, a zebra, a hyena and an orangutan for company, the boy’s previously unwavering beliefs are tested to their limits.
JLS (Pictured above) have announced that they are to call time on their career after an incredible 6 year journey. Goodbye; The Greatest Hits Tour will be the last time the band will perform together as a 4 and they want to make sure that this tour is the best ever and that they end on a high! JLS will be stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena to say their farewell to Sheffield on Tuesday 10th December.
Since the release of James Cameron’s self-proclaimed 3D ‘game-changer’ Avatar back in 2009, Hollywood has been frantically searching for the next champion of the divisive format. Whilst Lee’s near-elemental force of direction may be largely responsible for some of Life of Pi’s most magnificent moments, all three dimensions are put to exceptional use throughout. Add to this some of the finest creature effects seen to date - it can be difficult to decipher where animal ends and artificial construct begins at points, such is the level of artistry on display - and Pi has announced itself as one of the early technical marvels of the 21st century. A striking tonal shift in Pi’s final quarter may catch some off-guard, and Spall’s reactionary listener may contribute almost nothing outside of serving as a receptacle for Pi’s fantastical exploits, but neither foible should take anything away from what is an outstanding adaptation of a rich text many thought unfilmable. If Lee’s 2005 multiple Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain was a tale of two men’s love for one another, his Life of Pi is the story of one boy’s unwavering adoration for his God. Regardless of your own personal spiritual leanings (or lack thereof), this is one slice of Pi that should leave you well and truly fulfilled - mind, body and soul. Daniel Green

Saturday 15th February 2014 @ Motorpoint Arena The Motorpoint Arena will play host to the sixth stop on the seven-round 2014 Arenacross tour on Saturday 15th February and as part of its pre-event promotions e22 Sports will be unleashing a hand-picked selection of the UK’s finest Freestyle Motocross pilots upon city centre crowds. Freestyle Motocross – or FMX – is an integral part of the Arenacross show with riders hitting purpose-built ramps and then attempting to out-do each other as they whip and back-flip 100kg motorcycles in a death-defying display of aerial gymnastics. Barnsley boy George Simpson will be facing the biggest challenge of his short racing career when he lines up on his Small Wheel 85cc machine for the 2014 Arenacross tour. The 11-year-old pupil at Bank End Primary School in the town has been racing for less than two years but has already begun to impress his rivals at the White Rose MXC where he’s a regular competitor. “I don’t really know what to expect because I’ll be racing against some very fast riders,” says George, “but I do know I’m very excited about racing Arenacross. It’s going to be an amazing experience!”
