2003 - 2013
What were you doing in December 2003? Let’s be honest most people can’t remember what they were doing on dates last year never mind 10 years ago but we here at The Barnsley Eye certainly remember the above date.......it was when the very FIRST issue of the Barnsley Eye was produced. (pictured right) It seems like a lifetime ago and in that time the magazine has had it’s fair share of ups and downs but 3 things have always remained in our ethos throughout the many issues we have produced........... 1. We strive to give away a quality FREE publication to the people of Barnsley no matter who you are. 2. We make sure that the news stories are always upbeat and of interest to local people, not bringing about doom and gloom or touching on controversial issues. 3. We try not to overload the magazine with adverts. Indeed - it is with the aid of advertising revenue that the magazine can continue to be produced but we make sure there is always a balance between articles, columns, news, pictures and advertisements.

Local Girl Enters Regional Finals of Miss England Jasmine Mokrysz (right) has entered the “Miss Leeds” regional finals of the Miss England Competition. Jasmine is a local Barnsley girl, aged 17 living in Swaithe near Worsborough. She attends Penistone Grammar Scool where she is currently working hard doing her A levels. Her mum Gaynor didn’t know she had even entered the competition. “I was first of all shocked she had entered but also really pleased to hear she was chosen as a finalist for Miss Leeds.” she said. What happens with the Miss England / Miss World competition is that if she wins Miss Leeds this gives her automatic entry into Miss England, if she wins that she gets automatic entrance this year into the Miss World competition, the first hurdle however is Miss Leeds and she has some extremely gorgeous opposition to contend with if you look at www.missengland/info Jasmine definitely needs all local votes to win the Miss Popularity section of the competition and if anyone Barnsley Eye readers would like to vote for her, you can vote by text by simply texting 64343 and typing MISS LEEDS12 this registers votes for her. The texts costs £1.00 and your standard network charge. She currently needs more votes as she is about half way down the list - wouldn’t it be great to have a local Barnsley girl represent the town at the Miss World competition? This vote finishes on Friday 10th May at 6pm so there is no time to waste and part of the rules state that no-one can place more than 30 individual votes at once in a 24 hour period.
SO COME ON.... SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR A LOCAL GIRL AND VOTE FOR JASMINE!
TK Maxx Absail on Red Nose Day 2013 At TK Maxx Barnsley we’re taking our passion for fundraising to another level this year; literally. We will be holding a sponsored absail through the Alhambra Centre to raise as much money as possible. Our abseiling event is happening on Friday 15th March in the Alhambra Shopping centre. We will be coming down over the balcony from the gallery level which is a drop of 40ft. We have 40 peolpe taking part and the event will last most of the day. All money raised will be going to comic relief. We will also have bucket collectors out on the day so hopefull it should be a great event. Once again we have partnered up with Comic Relief to give our support to the 2013 Red Nose Day campaign. For the fifth year running we are the exclusive retailer of the Red Nose Day t-shirt collection, (right) this year designed by the influential Stella McCartney. We also have an exclusive homeware range designed by Emma Bridgewater. All the net profits of our t-shirts and homeware go direct to Comic Relief helping people living unimaginably tough lives in the UK and Africa. With Red Nose Day happening on Friday 15th March we know that there will be lots of people up and down the country wanting to grab a t-shirt to wear for their fundraising activities or just to look fabulous on the high street. Or perhaps they need an apron to help them cook up a storm in the kitchen or for their charity bake sale. To date TK Maxx have raised £9.7 million for Comic Relief and with your help we can raise even more. The £5 donation from the sale of a £9.99 unisex t-shirt could pay for a hot meal for five children living in extreme poverty in the UK. Or £8 donation from the sale of an apron could pay for someone with trachoma in Africa to have an operation to help them see more clearly – and stop infections that could cause blindness. Hotel Wins National Award as Top Business Hotel in UK
The Ramada Encore Hotel in Barnsley has been awarded as a runner-up in the Late Rooms Top Business Hotels of the Year 2012. The Hotel has been recognised by the International website due to its excellent feedback from Late Rooms customers. After an exhaustive hunt through its 70,000 hotels, B&Bs, cottages and apartments, the team at LateRooms.com identified the properties that scored the highest in the all-important customer feedback reviews. The reviews used to identify the award winners score hotels on their service, cleanliness, location and general guest experience. LateRooms.com guests are only given the opportunity to review a property once their stay is complete ensuring each and every review is genuine. Ramada Encore Barnsley Hotel Manager Dawne Carter said: “We are flattered and indeed very proud of our award from Late Rooms, to have been chosen over thousands of hotels across the country, is a fantastic compliment. The team at the hotel deserve the recognition as they have put in the hardwork to make our guests feel welcome and pleased with the level of service they receive. Jessica Reading Director of Marketing & User Experience for LateRooms. com said; “With the Simply the Guest Awards we hope we will inspire some amazing short breaks for 2013, and recognise the valuable feedback which our customers provide our properties, and at the same time, showcase our top rated hotels.”

Solar Europa Become Latest Chamber Patron Solar Europa have become the latest company to take up Patronage of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. The Renewable Energy expert, whose head office is in Barnsley, operates throughout the UK and internationally. Solar Europa and the Chamber have come together to develop a package for businesses for which the consumption of environmentally-friendly electricity will bring much needed long-term cost savings. These sustainable benefits can be gained for business through the exclusive offer that Solar Europa is making to Chamber members. Solar Europa provides the solar PV system free of charge to businesses and, in exchange, the business is required to enter an agreement to consume the Green Electricity generated by the system. This Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is for a period of 20 years, saving up to 50 per cent off grid prices, and will not only secure a material reduction in utility-based electricity costs, but will also protect against energy price inflation (historically at least more than three per cent above RPI and rising) as a result of linking increases to RPI only. David Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer at Solar Europa, said: “We are delighted to become Patrons of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, this is a unique opportunity for Solar Europa to showcase the benefits of Free Solar PV for business. Our offer is simple, we supply the Solar PV system free of charge and the electricity produced is sold back to the business. This gives a saving of up to 50 per cent off grid prices, which protects against energy price volatility allowing accurate planning for tomorrow’s energy costs today.”
For information about the package, e-mail: info@solareuropa.co.uk, call 01226 249852 or visit www.solareuropa.co.uk
Chamber Welcomes HS2 Station Announcement Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Department for Transport’s announcement that a station will be built just off the M1 motorway (Junction 34), as part of the second phase of the High Speed Rail network (HS2) which will serve the Sheffield City Region. Services to the City Region (SCR) are due to commence in 2033, with the first and second phases connecting the region to London, Birmingham and the West Midlands, the East Midlands and Leeds. The high speed station will bring significant benefits to the City Region’s economy - research carried out on behalf of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and Metro (West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive) showed that High Speed Rail services in Yorkshire would generate an estimated £2.3 billion of local economic benefits, on top of the predicted £60 billion of national transport benefits. By linking the Leeds City Region, the Sheffield City Region and the East Midlands, High Speed Rail would connect an area of 6.7 million people and three million jobs, also cutting Sheffield to London journeys from two hours, seven minutes to one hour, 15 minutes. Dominic Beck, (right) Policy & Representation Adviser at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “The Chamber is delighted by the announcement that the second phase of High Speed Rail will stop off in the Sheffield City Region. The location of the station means that the inherent links between Rotherham and Sheffield will be continued, and indeed strengthened, while the station is also close enough to the M1 motorway to benefit Barnsley”.

Branching Out A local ladies group were so moved by a talk given to them by Treetop House manager, Ann Wyatt, that they decided to support the charity’s current fundraising appeal. The Sick Children’s Trust’s “Branching Out” appeal will raise funds to build a new 11 bedroom house on Sheffield Children’s Hospital site. The charity needs to raise £980,000 to build the new house which will provide accommodation for families of sick children being treated in hospital. The 36 members from Ecclesfield Ladies’ Group invited house manager Ann to speak late last year about the work of the charity. Irene Proctor, chairlady, from the group said: “We we’re really impressed by Ann and the work of the charity not only in the Yorkshire region but all across the UK too. Every year we choose a charity to donate a sum to and this year, what with The Sick Children’s Trust in great need with their £980,000 fundraising appeal, we couldn’t think of a better cause. “When our group was first formed 46 years ago it was originally a mums group so children’s charities have always been close to our heart but as the age of the members got older we decided to change the name.” The group meet every Thursday, one week they have a speaker and on the alternative week they have a coffee evening where members can sit and talk, have a discussion or a quiz. During the year they also have outings, summer party and twice a year as well as other activities. Ann Wyatt, House Manager at Treetop House, the charity’s existing ‘Home from Home’ added: “I am delighted by the generosity of this ladies’ group and the money raised will go towards a great cause.” If you’d like to get involved please visit www.sickchildrenstrust.org

The Barnsley Eye have teamed up with our favorite author Milly Johnson to give you the Barnsley Eye reader the chance to have your “short story” published in print. Send us your short story (1000 words or less) Milly will pick the best and then, exclusively it will be printed right here in the Barnsley Eye.
Thank goodness Spring will be here before the month is out. I’ve never heard as many people complaining about their dropped spirits as I have so far in 2013. The build-up to Christmas takes forever and then it’s over in a rush, everyone is back to work and the central heating bills threaten to bankrupt everyone. There doesn’t seem much cheer around in the bleak weeks of January and February for most people. And don’t look to the news to make you feel better. If it’s not more child abuse cases coming to the fore or groping MPs, it’s the news that energy companies are bathing in profits – but you aren’t going to see any of them, chum. But the advent of spring makes everything a little better. Extra minutes of daylight, buds pushing through the soil, a bit of warmth in the air. In our house it’s the prospect of watching my son play rugby on Sunday without the weight of forty-eight layers of spectator clothing needed to stave off frostbite that’s especially welcome. My family will be especially keen to see me not wearing the huge furry Dalmatian spotted hat which was acquired for comfort reasons rather than for fashion, plus the matching scarf with claws on the end. With any luck we will see the sun this year – you know that big yellow thing that sits tantalisingly behind clouds and makes a fleeting appearance the week before a bank holiday. We may moan and groan about the seasons, but could you honestly live in a climate that didn’t have them? Would the prospect of sun twelve months a year soon outlive its novelty factor? I’m not sure I could survive in a sunshine only state. I might not like to be outside in the cold, but I do like to be snug indoors watching the
__EYE_MARCH 13_Complete.indd 9
wind blow and the rain fall through the window. I hate driving in snow, but what I want to live in a climate where it never fell? I just wish someone would tweak the weather a bit – define the seasons so everyone knows what they’re doing. If winter insists on being bleak and miserable, then let spring be green with no freak snowstorms. Summer shouldn’t be full of rain and clouds – I want sunshine, warmth – with the odd summer rainstorm to clear the air. Autumn should be balmy and pretty. I should still be able to have the odd gin and tonic in the garden after dinner without having to weight myself and the bench down to stop us being blown away. But until scientists harness the weather it’s either off to Oz or stay here and lump it. Here’s hoping for a nice normal year weather-wise to lift us from the doldrums of rotten world news: famine, debt, knifings, politics. A little bit of sunshine, if anyone is listening up there, is all we’re asking for.
5 Runners up will all recieve a signed copy of a Milly Johnson book of your choice.

10 Eye on Health & Fitness Metabolism-Boosting Steps The Barnsley Eye spoke with fitness expert Shane Williams at Lifestyle Fitness on Peel Parade to get the insight on how optimize your calorie burn at the gym. While it’s true that our metabolism naturally slows down as we get older, these tips can help people of all ages and sizes optimize their daily calorie burn.
Aerobic exercise is key! You probably already know that aerobic exercise (like running, brisk walking, swimming, and bike riding) helps rev up your metabolism and burns calories while you’re doing it. But did you know that aerobic activities also cause your metabolism to stay revved up for a period of time after exercising? With this in mind, aim for 30-plus minutes of cardiovascular activity every day (or at least five days a week).
Strength training revs your engine. It’s true what they say about muscle burning more calories than fat: The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn 24/7 — even when you’re sitting still.
Eat at least 1,000 calories each day. Your body and metabolism thrive on food. When you fast, crash diet, or restrict your intake to 1,000 calories or below, your metabolism will respond by slowing down to conserve energy. Imagine your metabolism as a blazing fire. Feed the fire consistently with wood and it continues to burn at a good rate, but if you run out of wood, the fire goes out. Even when you’re cutting calories to lose weight, it’s important to feed your fire and keep your metabolism at its optimal level by eating at least 1,000 calories a day.
Include lean protein with every meal. Eating all types of food creates a thermic effect and will raise metabolism after consumption. However, protein results in a greater metabolic boost than carbohydrates or fats. Plus, eating an appropriate amount of protein will ensure you’re able to maintain and build muscle mass (the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism). Make sure to incorporate lean protein into every meal and get the right amount each day. How much do you need? A simple rule of thumb is 50 percent of your ideal body weight in grams. So, for example, if you want to get down to 140 pounds, aim for 70 grams of protein each day. The best protein sources include skinless poultry, fish and seafood, lean meat. The key thing to remember is that it’s not about preparing for a diet, but more about changing your life so that you don’t need to diet. Eventually making healthy food choices and getting regular exercise will become a part of your day so you don’t even have to think about it! SW

14 Eye on Style Help me! I have changed, but my clothes haven’t! ‘I have lots of clothes, but nothing feels quite right,’ ‘Nothing looks like me anymore.’
Have you had a big life change – milestone birthday, redundancy from a job, started a new career? You can feel lost as to what to wear. If you’re standing at your over stuffed wardrobe every morning, thinking ‘I hate my clothes’ or ‘I have nothing to wear,’ ask yourself the following:
A) What doesn’t feel right? If you’ve changed, it’s important to understand how you’re different. Maybe you’ve left a job, a relationship? Your clothes, still stuck in the past, are not in step with the changed you.
B) How do I want to come across? When circumstances change in your life, it’s an opportunity to apply fresh ways of thinking about how do I want to come across to the world? Cross check that with the contents of your existing wardrobe. Start to get mindful of what really feels like you when you dress – and also what doesn’t.
C) How do I want to feel? We all think about how an outfit looks. But clothes are also intimately linked with how we feel. Understanding this can be invaluable when you’re trying to identify new aspects of your style.
But don’t panic. Bringing your clothes into alignment with the new you doesn’t mean you need a high salary. Once you’ve identified what doesn’t work anymore, a few clever tweaks can get the process going. Take it step by step, and reassess whether your new purchases are effectively telling your story.

Cafe Naaz, Sandygate, Wath When it comes to Indian Restaurants Cafe Naaz has definatly got the edge on most others. With its modern contemporary design and comfortable surroundings it is one of the best places around to enjoy a special meal for two, or a night out with friends. He said: “All the traditional Indian favourites are on offer, together with
some signature dishes and tandoori specialities.” The restaurant is purpose - built and offers a modern take on Indian cuisine.Ceiling-to-floor drapes divide the polished hardwood tables and there’s a relaxed and private feel to the dining area which seats 66. There is a private area for family parties or get-togethers. The food at Cafe Naaz is excelent and many of the dishes have been created from the passion that owners Naaz and Fayzul have for their food. Cinema Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino makes a dizzy return to form with a horribly funny slavery western – and Samuel L Jackson is extraordinary as the ultimate baddie. Tarantino, king of the comeback, famously returned John Travolta to the pop-culture frontline for Pulp Fiction. Now Tarantino has made his own comeback, after what many critics (not me) have called a recent worrying slump. For me, Tarantino had always been the master of cinema, something to do with his mastery of surface, dialogue and style – an ability to make you believe in it and see through it at the same time. That ability has gloriously returned. Jamie Foxx plays Django, a slave in 1858, who on being transported through Texas in the bitter winter cold, has a fateful encounter with the extraordinary Dr King Schultz, a mysterious German former dentist played by Christoph Waltz. Django's new friend gives him a taste of freedom, but is astonished to learn of his connection with a fellow slave, a beautiful woman named Broomhilda (Kerry Washington); it is a mis-hearing of the name "Brünnhilde" given by her German masters. She is being held at the plantation Candieland in Mississippi, owned by the revolting racist and sadist Calvin Candie, unforgettably played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Somehow, and with Schultz's help, Django must get her out. Good as they are, Foxx, DiCaprio, Waltz and Washington are utterly upstaged by Samuel L Jackson, who gives an extraordinary performance as Stephen, Candie's household attendant, an Uncle Tom figure utterly and aggressively loyal to the white master, with a deathly stare, a disturbing tremor and a habit of dropping the N-word more aggressively than anyone else (and heaven knows everyone is dropping it pretty aggressively). Tarantino shoves everything like this under your nose. Only he and Jackson could possibly have got away with that Stephen character: it is genuinely gasp-inducing. Slavery is a subject on which modern Hollywood is traditionally nervous, a reticence amounting almost to a conspiracy of silence – except, of course, in the explicit context of abolition. As far as Hollywood is concerned, the day-to-day existence of unabolished slavery has been what welfare reformists called the live rail: don't touch it. It takes a film unencumbered with liberal good taste to try. Perhaps the most significant moments are when Django is trained by Schultz as a gunfighter. From any distance, on any occasion, Django can shoot with ruthless accuracy and verve, and afterwards permits himself a grin of pleasure. Is that a metaphor for Tarantino's own shootings? All I can say is that I matched the hero's smile with one of my own. Excellent. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Walking with Dinosaurs - The Arena Spectacular is brought to the U.K. by Global Creatures, headed by CEO Carmen Pavlovic, in association with BBC Worldwide. Pavlovic said, “The BBC Series was a brilliant blend of special effects, escapism, excitement and information. In order to bring this TV event into the third dimension on stage with life-size dinosaurs, we created a £12.5 million spectacle so immense that it can only fit into arenas.” A landmark in family entertainment, Walking with Dinosaurs has been seen by over 7million people in a staggering 206 cities across the world. Eye on Football 31
Barnsley Football Club moved out of the relegation zone and went into the last 8 of the FA Cup last month - could the revival be on? As the final whistle blew on a cold Tuesday night in February, not only had Barnsley managed to fight back from a goal down to beat Wolves, but they finally moved out of the relegation zone for the first time in over two months. The turnaround has been astonishing since David Flitcroft along with Micky Mellon and Martin Scott took charge at Oakwell. The New Year’s Day match away to Peterborough has been their only defeat in the opening ten games. In that time five wins and a draw in the league has lifted the Reds off the bottom of the table and into a group of tightly packed clubs above the relegation zone. Added to that are the three wins in the FA Cup that have given Barnsley a quarter-final tie at the Etihad Stadium against Premier League holders Manchester City. All in all it has been a great two months at Oakwell. In last month’s Barnsley Eye David Flitcroft’s message to the fans was, “Let’s hear that support and we’ll give you something to shout about.” That certainly happened. The support for the team has been fantastic and the players have really felt the fans getting behind them. Talking about the support in the FA Cup match away to MK Dons Flitcroft said, “Thank you to all the 3,700 plus who came. You probably don’t understand how significant your support was, but the players do. You made it like a home tie.”
when Barnsley take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium with the winners going to Wembley for the semi-finals. There will be no respite as a few days later Brighton come to Oakwell followed by Watford before the International break gives the players the chance to catch their breath before the remaining nine league matches in 36 days. Finally the last game of March will be against local rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. The Club has also reduced match day ticket prices in recent weeks. Adult prices have gone down by £5 which means 1887 members can now watch the Reds for just £20 (£23 for non-member). With only a handful of home games remaining in what they call the ‘business-end’ of the season your support has never been more important.
Barnsley FC’s March Fixtures Saturday 2nd: Bolton Wanderers (home) Tuesday 5th: Burnley (away) Saturday 9th: Manchester City (away) Tuesday 12th: Brighton (home) Saturday 16th: Watford (home) Saturday 30th: Sheffield Wednesday (away) It’s going to be a busy month for Barnsley FC both in the league and FA Cup. The Reds are going to need all your support - So COME ON YOU REDS!!! Lets get behind them!
The month of March, despite having a two week International break, is packed with matches. The Reds will play host to Craig Davies and Bolton Wanderers on Saturday 2nd and then will travel to Burnley for a Tuesday evening encounter. The following Saturday the FA Cup returns
