Twister Over Cudworth
We were sent this picture of a tornadoe, or “twister” as they are known, taken over the skys of Cudworth last month. Britain has the highest frequency of twisters over its land surface of any country in Europe and all are light or moderate in strength. The average number of tornadoes reported each year in the UK though is only 33 so this picture is actually quite rare!

Moo Designs to Make Bag for US TV Icon Kat Von D The team at Moo Designs in Barnsley have been tasked with making one of their iconic leather bags for American model and tattoo artist Kat Von D. Kat, best known for her work on US reality television show LA Ink, fell in love with Moo’s eye-catching bags during the “Pure” trade fashion event, held in London earlier this month.
Owner Clare Bottomley, her daughter Holly and employee Kim Lawton (both pictured above with Kat) attended the event to source stock for the Lucorum and Leeds Moo stores. “Holly and Kim spotted Kat at the event and went over to view her new clothing collection,” said Clare. “When they got talking to her, Kat saw Holly’s Moo bag and said she would love one of her own and asked us if we would make one for her. She has given us a description of what she would like - a large leather satchel bag in grey and black with a big distressed bow on the front. She just told us to be artistic with it. We are currently working on several different designs before we choose our favourite to send to her. Whatever we decide it will be a one off design just for Kat which we hope to personalise in some way, even if it’s just a metal ‘K’ on the zip pull.” Following their meeting Clare has placed an order for some of Kat’s autumn/winter clothing collection, including leather gilets and jackets, which will arrive in Moo Designs’ stores later this year. Said Clare: “Kat’s 30th birthday is next month so we hope to have the bag with her in time for then. It’s great to think that something made right here in Barnsley will be worn by a celebrity in the glitz and glamour of LA.”

06 Eye on Local News Jack Sparrow Drops Anchor at Calypso Cove Calypso Cove at the Metrodome Leisure Park had its official opening on Friday the 9th of March showing selected VIP guests what the regions newest attraction had to offer. Jack Sparrow and his motley crew entertained the 600 strong VIP crowd both inside and outside the venue with stilt walking, unicycling and diablo juggling. Along with Sparrow’s convoy, Simon Hirst from capital FM literally hit the decks to provide the musical entertainment for the guests. Simon has a keen interest in Calypso Cove with him being a Barnsley lad and visiting the Metrodome since he was a child. The newly refurbished £1 million pound water park includes three new flumes called Eruption, The Kraken and the Terror Torrent which the latter is one of the fastest indoor slides in the UK. Another new edition is the ‘Skull Falls’, a nine metre high skull that acts as a waterfall into one of the pools. One of the main highlights was the Jack Sparrow look a-like who swaggered round the Metrodome greeting the guest’s with numerous pirate puns and swashbuckling stories. After speaking with the guests Jack could be found testing out the other facilities that the Metrodome had to offer, much to the surprise of the other Metrodome customers, especially when he hit the gym and the bowling alley. The moment of the night belonged to ten year old Nathan Padgett. (pictured above). Nathan who is winning his battle against leukaemia won a competition with ‘We are Barnsley’. The winner of the competition received the chance to have a 1-2-1 chat and photo opportunities with Jack Sparrow and Simon Hirst from Capital FM.

Chamber of Commerce Fund To Boost Local Charities
Numerous South Yorkshire charities are to benefit from the generosity of business people from the area, through Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s President Chris MacCormac has established a President’s Charity Fund, through which donations made at the Chamber’s annual President’s Charity Ball will support a range of good causes in the local area. The Chamber handed over £10,000 to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and dementia charity Lost Chord following the 2011 ball, and the evening has become a staple fixture in the diary over recent years with tens of thousands of pounds raised for good causes. The fund will come into operation by distributing monies raised at this year’s President’s Charity Ball, which takes place at the Magna Centre, Rotherham, on Saturday 12 May.
Chris MacCormac said: “I am proud of the generosity and willingness to give to those in need shown by business people in Barnsley and Rotherham over the years. “The creation of this fund will now enable us to distribute the monies donated more widely and to support more ‘smaller’ charitable organisations whose resources may be stretched. I look forward to working with these charities in the future.” The theme of this year’s ball is a mystery masquerade which will see the superb Gillian Banks Theatre School recreate parts of famous productions such as Cirque Du Soleil, Jekyll & Hyde, The Mask, The Rocky Horror Show, Thriller and Zorro – all with an enigmatic twist. Tickets will be priced at £60 plus VAT or £550 plus VAT for a table of 10 - call 0844 414 5100 or visit www.brchamber.co.uk to book now or for further sponsorship information.

Countdown to the Olympics
by Natalie Rowan of Kingstone School From the wonder of the Opening Ceremony to the thrills of the sporting action, we here at the Barnsley Eye are really exited about the London 2012 Olympic Games. In this continuing feature for the Barnsley Eye - Natalie Rowan of Kingstone School writes about the history of the greatest sporting event on earth. Los Angeles, USA 1932
Melbourne, Australia 1956
The Olympic Games of 1932 took place in Los Angeles, USA from July 30th-August 14th. The games were only carried out over a 16 day period, and this tradition has stuck as the Games have only lasted 15-18 days ever since. It was also at this time when the medal podium and Olympic Village were brought in.
From November 22nd to December 8th, 1956 was the Melbourne Olympics in Australia, the Games were also shared with Stockholm. Some of the events could not be held in Australia due to regulations, so these were held in Stockholm, Sweden five months earlier. The 1956 Games were the first to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as the first to be held outside Europe and North America.
Berlin, Germany 1936 The next Games were celebrated in Berlin, Germany from August 1st-16th, 1936. These were the first Games to appear on television. Also, it was at these Olympic Games when the youngest ever female gold medalist and the youngest ever medalist were produced. Adolf Hitler officially opened these Olympic Games, he allowed only members of the ‘Aryan Race’ to compete for Germany.
A twelve year gap was left until the next Olympics Games as The World War II lead to the Tokyo games in 1940 being cancelled, and the London Games of 1944 being put off for another four years. At this time obviously people were wondering as to whether there would ever be another games again. London Great Britain 1948 Eventually, London did get to host the Olympics again in 1948 from July 29th-August 14th. And even though times were tough and rationing was still happening, they managed to cope with it and just changed a few things such as using other venues instead of building new ones, and housing athletes in existing accommodation. Also, a record was broken at these Olympic Games as Bob Mathias of USA became the youngest male athlete to win an event, when getting gold in the decathlon, aged only 17.
Helsinki, Finland 1952 The twelfth Games took place in Helsinki, Finland where the Soviet Union and Israel entered for the first time. These Games started on July 19th and ended on August 3rd, 1952. 69 nations took part and a total of 4,955 athletes competed (4,436 men and 519 women). It is famous for being the Olympic Games at which the most number of world records were broken, before the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Rome, Italy 1960 The 1960 Olympic Games were held from August 25th-September 11th in Rome. This was the second time that Rome had been hosts of the Olympics however, the first time in 1906, Rome were forced to cancel after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Tokyo, Japan 1964 The Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan were the first to be held in Asia, and they took place on October 10th-24th, 1964. Tokyo was awarded to host the 1940 Olympics, but was changed because of Japans invasion of China. 93 nations took part in the Olympic Games in China, and the women’s pentathlon was introduced to the events. The Olympic Flame was lit by Yoshinori Sakai, who was born in Hiroshima on the day that an atomic bomb was dropped here.
Mexico City 1968 October 12th-27th, 1968 was when the Olympic Games were held in Mexico City and was a time when some of the Olympics’ best moments were witnessed. The most famous moment was when John Carlos and Tommie Smith protested against racism with their ‘Black Power’ fists whilst stood on the podium. Drug testing on winners were also introduced at this time.
Do you have a favorite Olympic Moment? Let us know here at the Eye at enquiries@joolmedia.com My favorite Olympic moment is the battle between Steve Cram and Seb Coe at Los Angeles 84 for the 1500m. Cram was good but Seb was absolutely outstanding in the last 800m. Blew him away! Pete W Natalie Rowan is writing as part of her work placement from Kingstone School

2012 Hair Trends by Isobelle Eaton

Long & bouncy Described as a gorgeous blow-out the bouncy blow dry gives long hair a groomed, elegant yet relaxed finish. Inspired, in part, by the 70s fashion revival but working across most of 2012’s looks, Hair type suited to: long straight hair & long wavy hair. Hair colour suited to: all. Homemade curls Both nostalgic and modern, this girlish and quirky hairstyle features many an element of other 2012 hairstyle trends: it has a parting and obvious product definition. Hair type suited to: long straight hair & long wavy hair. Hair colour suited to: all French twist Given that classic fashion revivals define 2012, it should come as no surprised to find that classic hairstyles also go a long way to defining the year. Hair type suited to: long straight hair & long wavy hair. Hair colour suited to: all. Looped under ponytail Less of a bun and more of a ponytail that’s been folded and looped under, this hairstyle offers up a mood somewhere between easy and casual, and tightly equestrian. Hair type suited to: long straight hair & long wavy hair. Hair colour suited to: all. Half up Brigitte Bardot hair It’s so classically sex kitten that we’d hardly limit it to a 2011 hair trend; but this Brigitte Bardot bouffant hairstyle – half up, half out and as sexy or as sleek as you want to make it – is one that sits perfectly with the year’s fashions. This is a modern, understated take that will suit day or night. Women’s rockabilly hair It’s the one 2012 hairstyle that’s in for both men and women. Emerging first as a men’s hair trend and now as a women’s, the women’s rockabilly hairstyle plays to the country Americana theme running through some of 2012’s fashion. Seldom subtle, but best worn rough and ready. Side pinned waves Flowing, bouncy waves accessorised by a side-pinned barrette create something of a girlish charm. While long hair works fantastically well for this look, this hairstyle can also work for short or mid hair lengths. A collision of forties glamour and seventies relaxed cool. Mod bob Short. Voluminous. Messy. This is the 2012 women’s hairstyle that marries a short hair cut with the best of the 1960s fashion revival to create a Mod bob that’s been inspired by the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Twiggy. Rock crop haircut Given it has so many devotees, the pixie crop isn’t disappearing from amongst 2012’s haircut trends. But it is being adapted. There’s the 60s and 70s crops, there’ll be the 20s crop, and, for 2012, there’s the rock crop.

By the time you read this, the last of my belongings will be packed into boxes ready to be shipped over to our new home. To say it’s been a traumatic time since putting our house up on the market would be an understatement because once that For Sale notice goes up, you just want the whole process over and done with. My nerves have been on an Alton Towers white knuckle ride these past months as prospective buyers came to view then announced that they LOVED the house, but they couldn’t sell their own. Or they were cash buyers with no chain but needed an extra bedroom – what a shame! Or in the case of someone else – absolutely and totally wanted it – but couldn’t afford it. I’m surprised I’ve got any walls left from the amount of times I’ve banged my head on them. And don’t get me started on trying to get a new mortgage when you’re a self-employed single parent. I’m not seen as a ‘stable client’ because I have an arty-farty profession. I was forced to enlist the services of an Italian Rottweiler by the name of Alex Bianchi who just doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I’m just glad he’s on my side, that’s all I can say. To cut a long story short, Signor Rottweiler found me a mortgage, he sadly declined my offer of marriage for sorting that out (his wife wouldn’t let him) and thanks to his excellent financial services are now preparing to move into our new house.
For all the excitement of getting a lovely new home, the core of me is quite sad to be leaving the old one. It’s not just been four walls and a ceiling, it’s been my protection, my sanctuary. My babies grew up here, my dog is buried in the garden (along with a cat and fourteen goldfish) there’s a height chart on the kitchen wall marking how the kids have grown (and I haven’t). I won Come Dine With Me in it, I wrote all my eight books in it, I celebrated my divorce by spraying champagne in the kitchen, I’ve been warm here, safe and I’ve loved it – and strangely I’ve felt that it’s loved me back. Everyone that comes through the door remarks what a lovely ‘feel’ my house has – and they’re right. And that’s why, because I’ve been its guardian as much as it has been mine, it was important to find the right people to take it over. When the new owner came through the portal and mentioned that they ‘wanted a house to look after them’ – I was in no doubt that I was leaving our home in safe hands. I’m not sure how I’ll feel passing by this house and knowing it belongs to someone else – I think it’ll take a little time to get over. I’ll shed more than a tear when I lock the door for the final time. I shall feel as if I’m leaving an old friend. My swanky new house has a hard act to follow.

Local Barber Accredited Tony’s Barbers & Sons has just become one of the first in the country to win accreditation under the British Barbers Association scheme. Michael Taylor BBA Director stated “With the influx of so many unqualified barbers and growth in fly-by-night barber shops, it’s important that the public has a means to identify professional barbering enterprises. That is what the BBA Accreditation scheme provides. Raising professional standards, highlighting and celebrating talent and facilitating the professional and commercial development of barbers, male grooming salons and men’s hairdressers” Tony Batty said, “Not many realise it but you can open a barbers shop tomorrow and offer poor hygiene, inadequate skills, ignore Health and Safety issues and be uninsured. This scheme shows that this salon has the right credentials and it supports the professionalization of barbering. It’s good for the public, good for decent barbers and bad for the cowboys. All professional barbers should be a part of it”

Get a Spring in Your Step! Although generally speaking we have got away with a very mild winter this year, I think all of us look forward to Spring.Winter tends to seem very long and as the season draws to a close we tend to feel sluggish, life generally seems a bit hard, but with the first sign of spring we seem to get a spring in our step and a yearning to make changes. Diet is an easy one. We all put a bit of weight on through the winter but with a few small adjustments and some will-power we soon begin to feel better. However that is not my real concern. To function healthily we need to eat healthily and regularly. I come across people all the time who never eat breakfast and sometimes do not manage to eat until the evening when they might binge. Many people will then proceed to tell me that they can’t possibly eat early in the morning. I can appreciate that this can be an issue. I have known people take their breakfast to work to eat at about 9 am. I also suggest that a fruit smoothie might be an option with a snack later in the morning. Eating at breakfast time can make a difference to your health and can help you to lose weight. Drinking is my next issue. Yes we might discuss alcohol, the advice is moderation. Most people enjoy a drink and why not? But it is worth remembering that alcohol does carry a lot of calories. We also try to discuss the amount of tea and coffee consumed daily. Some people are very good and only drink a couple some drink continuously all day. Both contain caffeine, which is not bad in small quantities and can be a boost on occasions, but can interrupt sleeping patterns and cause palpitations when drunk in large quantities. Water is usually the best option which is also cleansing if you are thinking about detoxing. Exercise is another hot topic. Some exercise regularly at the gym, some say they do nothing but spend a couple of hours walking the dog, gardening or doing housework vigorously and some say they exercise but really do not make the time. Exercise is good for you and it does not have to be at the gym. It is good for every part of the body including the mind. We all need to make an effort to do something that gets the heart pumping for about 30 minutes three or four times a week.

How do you relax? Do you relax? If you have plenty of time this is easy. You read, watch tv, play on the computer or have other hobbies. You also go out socialising with friends. Why is this important? Well the moment you stop having the time to do all this and make excuses for not socialising is when you are allowing stress and stressful situations to run your life ie work is taking over. Finally sleeping habits. A good night’s sleep is vitally important. It is a good idea to have a regular bedtime routine with a regular bed time. Try to wind down, take a warm bath, relax and a milky drink can help. Switch off the computer well before bedtime and do something relaxing. Many people find they can go to sleep initially but wake in the night with problems spinning around in the mind. This is usually the effect of a stressful situation, so slow down and relax, and if necessary seek advice. All these things we know but we often need a reminder and a stimulus to begin to make those changes. You may not get the instant gratification that get when someone tells you your hair looks nice or admires your new clothes but you may find that you develop an inner glow and a healthiness that people begin to envy. Eye on
The Eye Gets Tattooed by Dean Gill @ 4 LIFE The Barnsley Eye visits Dean Gill owner and tattoo artist at 4 Life Tattoo and Body Piercing Studio in Penistone for some ink! I’d chosen Dean Gill at 4 Life Tatoo and Body Piercing Studio to do me a new a tattoo after seeing his work on someone at my gym. To say I was blown away with the work on show was an understatement. The tattoo I’d seen on my fellow gym user was neat with crisp, clean lines, beautiful colour and had elements of Japanese stylings with new and old school styles all rolled into one which was the exact style I was looking for.
I had the idea of a shark side piece (above) for a good 12 months taken from a painting I had seen. I initially went to discuss a design with Dean at the shop on Market Street in Penistone. The first thing I noticed was just how friendly Dean was. His studio was very professional and even though I was a little nervous at first he wasted no time in making me feel comfortable with his approachable manner. It took no time to realise that Dean was the man for the job and that he is an artist who definitely has a passion for his work. After speaking at great length about my idea with Dean and his wife Paula (who works and runs the shop with him), he prepared a stencil for me that included a few of his own ideas thrown into the mix which really improved my original concept.
wait for the next appointment, where Dean will begin adding colour! Not only was I very happy, it was also plain to see from the massive grin on Deans face that he was happy with his work too! GM See future issues of the Eye to see the tattoo progress @ 4 Life.
4LIFE TATTOO & BODY PIERCING STUDIO
A quick look at his online portfolio left no doubt of his talent, skill and imagination. Dean comes from a fine art, graffiti and graphic design background and you can certainly see it in his work as he truly shines in bright bold colour pieces, although he can pretty much turn his hand to anything you can throw at him! Not only does he excel in strong bold colour work, his vision and skill creates depth and persective which looks amazing on skin. As Dean began my new tattoo (which suprisingly didnt hurt half as much as I expected) he started to explain to me about the art and history of tattooing and how important the settings of the tattoo machines were to get the best results. After a 6 and a half hour sitting the first lines were all done (including powerlines which are thicker lines to the initial fine lines) and by then I was definitely ready for a rest. Tattooing must require massive reserves of skill and concentration by the artist especially on an area like the side of the torso which I have been told is quite a difficult area to work on, opposed to the arms, shoulders or back where I already have tattoos. The finished result I must say was fantastic - it was exactly what I wanted and in the perfect style. I could not have been more pleased with my first sitting and overall expierience at the 4 Life Studio. I can’t

16 Eye on Charity Events Charity Event to Help Local Girl Mikka Davies Mikka Davies (pictured below far left) was left paralysed from the shoulders down after suffering a massive stroke.
Ms Davies and her partner Richard Walmsley, who also have a son, Blake, have been told by doctors that Mikka will need treatment at the specialist spinal unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. The mother-of-two added: ‘We don’t know what they will be able to do but they are going to try and get her walking. We don’t know whether she will be able to walk again, they are just going to do the best they can”.
‘This fundraiser is all about allowing Mikka to have a little independence’. The event which is to be held at The Star Hotel, Cudworth on Thursday 26th April is to raise money for Mikka to have a Tomcat Trike which is a classic Trike for children over 95cm tall through to adult with mild to server physical ability. The event will see a host of guests from James Toseland, 2 times Superbike Champion who is engaged to singing star Katie Mellua and Cudworths very own Simon Hirst from Capital FM. There will also be a disco, an auction with some fantastic prizes and a raffle*. The everning is sure to raise the much needed funds for Mikka.
Mikka who had been a healthy toddler, suddenly lost the use of her limbs while lying on the sofa at home in Barnsley, her mother Rachel, 26, took Mikka to the local hospital and she was quickly transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital. After four weeks of extensive tests the family were told that Mikka had suffered a stroke. ‘My first thought were, has she had a stroke?” said Racel “But then I thought about that TV advert which shows the warning signs of strokes. It talks about one side of the body, but this wasn’t, it was both sides.’ She added: ‘It’s so tragic, she is only a little girl and you just don’t think anyone so young would suffer a stroke. It’s something you associate with older people. Although I feared she might have had a stroke, another part of me was thinking, it can’t be that, she is only a child and when the hospital confirmed it we were shattered”. Mikka, who is now back at home, has regained slight movement in her right arm and left thumb, but is otherwise paralysed and has to wear a body harness to help support her.

Eye on Local Business 23 RTR - Making Breakdown Cover Work For Motorists For many years the majority of motorists have continued to purchase breakdown cover, primarily for the peace of mind that it brings. This is generally compounded by the breakdown clubs creating a sense of fear about the potential consequences of not having it. Now of course things have changed. As the cost of motoring rises – the cost of fuel, insurance and maintenance has increased significantly in recent years – is breakdown cover still considered vital or are car owners starting to question the value? Mintel recently produced a report on the Vehicle Recovery industry which highlighted that 30% would switch their current cover if they found a cheaper deal compared to 16% in 2008. Independent breakdown cover provider, Road To Recovery, has operated a ‘pay as you go’ cover since 2009 and while it has attracted a good level of interest it seems the motorists’ desire for peace of mind has limited take up of the offering, despite evidence about cost efficiency and reliability of cover. For this reason RTR UK Ltd, the company behind Road To Recovery, has created a ‘best value’ breakdown cover which it offers for £15 per year. This is the lowest cost cover available from any UK provider. Paul Hoyle, MD of RTR UK Ltd (Pictured right) spoke of his approach to breakdown cover; “Cars are reliable, we don’t break down all that often and most of us wouldn’t pay out to insure against things that are actually much more likely to happen. Yet the fear of not having breakdown cover keeps motorists paying. He added, “PAYG is an innovative way to offer breakdown, we’ve won awards for it, but many are not ready to make the leap of faith. We have therefore introduced a ‘super low cost’ cover that offers that peace of mind for minimal cost and we think it could revolutionise the breakdown industry.” Road To Recovery has national UK coverage, a 24 hour call centre and even a smartphone app, just like any of the larger household name clubs. Could this be the future of breakdown?

Your Business Needs Some Google Love! If you are a business owner, then you need to be found by your customers right? You are probably wondering if you really need to spend money on adverts, catalogues, leaflets, business cards or radio, or even more sales people. I dont have all the answers, but unlike any other medium I can tell you just how many people are looking for your services on line. Its quite easy to show you why your competitors appear on Google at the top and why you dont seem to be doing so well. Of course if you dont appear on that all important first page, then you are missing out on very well qualified prospects who are looking, which means they are ready to spend. The internet is now available to lots of people in their pocket, 24/7 and that growth of smart phones is astronomical. The on line marketplace is growing and there is no recession in cyber world. How well you appear is really dependent on your website relevance and its credibility. Simply having a website doesnt give you either of those, you may stuff your website with all the phrases that people are looking for, known in the trade as the ‘keywords’ but unless you perform certain actions then Google may just overlook your content, month after month. Infact most of what you need to complete is hidden from view and its quite often not filled in by the designers that create your website. These vital areas are the page title, meta labels, the page main heading, the labelling of images as well as having relevant content, but ghaving a relevant website doesnt mean its credible! Credibility comes over time naturally by updating and growing your website, each time a search engine checks it out it should find that its grown since last time it looked. But again the vital aspect is unseen by the viewer and that is the credibility passed to your pages by what people are saying about you out there across the internet. In the main, are the links that connect from other pages back to yours, not just the number but the value of the link and how relevant it is to your content. Links can come from other websites, blogs, articles, videos, RSS feeds, FaceBook, twitter, adverts and directories, without this buzz your site doesnt build credibility. Need help with your internet marketing? Get in touch with iRun, large or small; there is an effective and affordable solution for your business.

Paul Weller Sonik Kicks
ALBUM REVIEW An emotional, experimental ride, Paul Weller’s 11th solo LP is brilliant stuff. Thirty years ago, Paul Weller was number one. The Jam’s A Town Called Malice spent three weeks at the top of the charts, its Motown bassline bustling, its finger clicks rustling. Watch its video now, and the 23-year-old at the middle of it has hardly changed - he sings a line in its first verse that’s practically become his motto: “Stop apologising for the things you’ve never done, because time is short and life is cruel, and it’s up to us to change.”
Motorpoint Arena Sheffield (2 performances)
Easter Monday 9th April 2012.
Sonik Kicks, his 11th solo album, is alive with the vitality that implies. Nevertheless, so rapturous has been the reception to his recent LPs – 2008’s 22 Dreams and 2010’s Mercury Prize-nominated Wake Up the Nation – that’s it’s almost become a cliché to flag up his return-to-form as something thrillingly adventurous, even avant-garde. It just happens to be made by a man always interested in filtering the past in his own way – and most 53-year-olds don’t do that as peculiarly as this. Sonik Kicks fizzes and spits from its first track, Green, blasting off with a synthesiser that recalls the motorik rhythms of Neu!, as well as the drone that starts The Human League’s Love Action. Then we whirl into a world of vocal echoes, garbled lyrics about secret guides and quiet times, and stereo whooshes through the headphones: it’s really hard not to be energised. Dragonfly and Around the Lake are similarly propulsive and sci-fi. Then we get into the weirder, instrumental stuff with 2 non vocal tracks.
The most moving moments, though, are the two big ballads: stunning pastoral epic By the Waters and the mainstream-friendly finale, Be Happy Children. This features Weller’s daughter Leah on a chorus, infant son Mac at its end, even a lyric that he’s acknowledged as a nod towards his late father (“your daddy’s gone, but only for a while”). Weller throws it all in on this record: experiment as far as he can take it, emotion as far as he will allow. To these ears it’s a heady, and brilliant, combination. Jude Rogers
For licencing details on this review visit http://creativecommons.org
More than anyone, these space-age stylings make you think of David Bowie, of whom Weller’s new wife is a huge fan – so much so, she’s famously named one of their new twin boys after him. But there are more solid, classic Weller tracks too. That Dangerous Age is particularly funny, a brilliantly self-aware piece of pop about a middle-aged man.

Their first album, ‘STEP ONE’ was certified five times platinum, cementing their position as the UK’s biggest pop sensations. Their next album, ‘STEPTACULAR’, featuring smash hits ‘Love’s Got A Hold Of My Heart’ and ‘After The Love Has Gone’, helped the album go four times platinum. In total, across 4 albums, STEPS sold an astonishing 15 million records. Support will come from Ukrainian star Kamaliya. Tickets are priced £35-£100 (may be subject to booking fee).
