He Didn’t Fix It For Me! What a cop out it was to have Bob the Builder turn on the Christmas lights - it could have been anyone in that foam suit for all we knew...why o why couldn’t we have had a proper celebrity like we usually do turn on our lights. Bob the Builder hardly compares to Stavros Flatley and The Saturdays who we have had previously. And while I’m on one - in the Eye last month you said the georgeous Amelia Lily from the X Factor would be there - when we got there it was that awful Kitty who had turned up instead! Mac Bostwick via email. Sorry about the Amelia Lily piece, at the time of going to press last month she was OUT of X Factor and all set for Barnsley. It’s silly old Frankie Cocozza’s fault for getting booted out - if he’d have behaved his sen he’d have still been in and we’d have got to see Amelia. And we’ve no idea what you mean when you say “foam suit” Mac? It was the “REAL” Bob the Builder and we reckon he’s bigger than Stavros Flatley and The Saturdays anyday!
Christmas “Party” Crashers Dear Banrnsley Eye, After attending the Christkindlemarkt in Barnsley this weekend, I must admit I came away very disappointed (and from the conversations had with others I wasn’t the only one). Gone were the traditional German and Christmasthemed stalls we are so used to seeing over the last few years and in their place were numerous stalls selling cheap perfume copies, cheap versions of branded clothing and other stuff you can find on any market any day of the year. However, more disappointingly of all we were treated to the presence of the BNP. Since when does a political party (particularly ones to whom the message of ‘peace to all mankind’ appears to evade them) have any place at a Christmas market? Sadly, next year I won’t be attending. Via email - name supplied but witheld by request. Thankyou for your thoughts. What did you think of the Christkindlemarkt this year? Send us an email and let us know.

Eye on Remembrance Hundreds of people braved the cold weather to attend the Remembrance Sunday service in town last month. The event is always well-attended, but organisers believed a surge in numbers was due to the tragic death of Darton soldier Private Matthew Thornton, in Afghanistan. A Special mention was given to Private Thornton, a volunteer with the Territorial Army during the service.

06 Eye on Local News RTR UK Ltd Charity Event in Support of BRAKE RTR UK Ltd became a corporate partner for Brake in October this year, the UK charity that campaigns to improve road safety and support the victims of road accidents. RTR works with people involved in road accidents every day and therefore sees the devastation this can cause, putting this issue at the heart of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) considerations. Paul Hoyle, Managing Director of RTR spoke of the company’s new alliance: “We are delighted to become a corporate partner to Brake and we share the charity’s ethos and aims. Brake does an excellent job supporting people whose lives have been shattered by accidents on the road and there are definite parallels with the work that we do; helping people with a range of services designed to make their lives easier following an accident.”
RTR
On the 25th November saw RTR’s annual corporate event at Holiday Inn Barnsley, which coincided with Road Safety Week and was a fantastic opportunity to raise money for the charity. The Event was a Vegas themed evening with Roulette, Black Jack, Vegas style slot machines, auction, raffle and a whole host of entertainment throughout the evening with a One Night Only party Paul piece the form the King himself Elvis. The evening up to date has raised thousands with donations still coming in. Paul and Claire of RTR would like to thank all who attended the evening and gave so generously to this worthy cause. Brake is an independent national road safety charity. Brake exists to stop the six deaths and 70 serious injuries that happen on UK roads every day and to care for families bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. Brake produces educational road safety literature, runs community training programmes and runs events including Road Safety Week (21-27 November 2011). Brake’s support division cares for road crash victims through a helpline and other services.More information about Brake is available from its website www.brake.org.uk and www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk

Eye on Local News Ball Raises £160,000! The much celebrated Firecracker Ball, which took place last month at Rudding Park in Harrogate, has raised a staggering £160,000 for Barnardo’s in Yorkshire.
07
Milly Gets the Keith Effect Barnsley writer Milly Johnson gives her account of her day with not one but TWO Keith Lemons!!!
In a momentous occasion the event smashed the £1 million barrier for cumulative funds raised for the children’s charity since 2002. The beneficiaries for this year’s funds are Young Carers - children who help to look after a member of the family who is sick, disabled, has mental health problems, or is misusing drugs or alcohol. Their day to day responsibilities often include cooking, cleaning, shopping, providing nursing and personal care and giving emotional support. The average age of a young carer is 12 and there are a recorded 175,000 young carers in the UK. More than half of young carers live in one-parent families and almost a third care for someone with mental health problems. However a survey by the BBC in November last year suggests that there are four times more young carers in the UK than are officially recognised. One in 12 of the 4,029 schoolchildren asked by the BBC said they had caring responsibilities - such as dressing, washing or bathing family members. If the survey reflects the UK as a whole, it would mean there are about 700,000 young carers in the UK
FIRECRACKER
Children who currently receive invaluable support from Willow Young Carers in Leeds bravely took centre stage at the Ball to talk about their experiences and how Barnardo’s has helped them to deal with their daily caring responsibilities. They brought the house of 650 guests close to tears with the realisation that they can really help…..and they did with amazing generosity.
Once again the Firecracker Ball staged a spectacular occasion taking a magical Narnia theme complete with giant iron gates, ice bar and snow covered trees! Topping the event was 80’s singing sensation and songwriter Tony Hadley (pictured above) who brought the house down with classics such as ‘Gold’, ‘True’ and ‘Through the Barricades’. Barnardo’s young carers’ services set to benefit from the funds raised this year are located in Leeds, Bradford, Rotherham, Doncaster and Wakefield. Sponsors for the 2012 Firecracker Ball were Evans Property Group, Dickinson Dees and UBS Wealth Management. The date for next year’s Firecracker Ball has been announced for 10th November 2012. For ticket and sponsorship information please contact Kirsty Guy 01748 821295 or alternatively email: Kirsty.guy@barnardos.org.uk
When I was invited to the filming of a new pilot show starring Keith Lemon, there was only one person I could possibly have taken with me as my ‘plus one’ – my very old friend’s husband Andy Bowers. And the reason for that is that Andy is one of Keith’s biggest fans – so much so that he has morphed into him over the past months. I’m witness to the ‘Keith Effect’ because when we went to the TV studios, the crowd lining up to get in were waving over thinking they were watching their hero arrive. And security didn’t even check his name, they just rushed to open the barrier so ‘Keith’ could go through. ‘Is it you?’ said delighted people by the lifts. It was fascinating to see how a programme is put together. There are a lot of stops and starts and action replays and waiting for changes to be made to the set. The highlight for me was when Keith flew above our heads and dropped furry prize-bearing lemons into the audience. He threw one for Andy to catch – it had a bra and pants in it. Keith kept pointing to Andy and saying how weird it was that he felt he was looking at himself and Andy couldn’t stop beaming. Keith met us afterwards for photos – and I got a big kiss. Off stage, I’m delighted to report, Keith Lemon is still Keith Lemon and had time for everyone. He and Andy posed with their bandaged hands and placed together they really do look alike. Keith thought Andy was brilliant and said that Andy must really take a ‘lot of stick’ looking like him. He thought it was hilarious that he had a doppelganger. Even with Keith standing there people were still asking for pictures with Andy. And he loved every minute of it.
Andy has since been in touch with lookalike agencies – how can he not? He has recently had to give up work to become the main carer for his autistic daughter Charlotte. Over the years Andy and Sue have raised money for and been an active support to families affected by autism. This Keith Lemon ride is giving Andy - and Sue - a brilliantly deserved fun-filled adventure.

Christmas comes but once a year. And thank goodness in a way because I’m not sure my heart can take the strain. Firstly there are the Christmas lists to satisfy. Over the years, the lads have written to Santa for items such as a genie, a 20 foot python and a helicopter. Not including the twenty football kits each (have you seen the PRICE of them???). Each game for their Nintendo costs more than my house and you can easily spend three hundred quid on a pile of toys that could fit in a toddler’s shoe box. Then there’s the shop shopping. I started sharpening my elbows in June for that ordeal. Standing in queues in Meadowhall longer than the Great Wall of China, four deep at the supermarket tills with a trolley full of stuff like Piccalilli and dates that MUST be bought as it’s the festive season but hardly ever gets eaten. Then there’s the big one – the Christmas quest that has women all over the country breaking out in a cold sweat in the middle of the night because they must have it: the Christmas outfit. They must have that one frock that transforms them into a princess when they put it on. The quality of a woman’s Christmas is governed by finding that one item. (Plus shoes and handbag if you’re a glutton for the extra pressure). As I write this I am looking at the calendar and realising I have ten days to the Mayor’s Ball and ten days to find the gown which will turn me
__EYE_DEC 11_Complete.indd 8
from ordinary 4ft 11” motherof-two into Cinderella after the fairy godmother has visited. One that will add six inches to my height, strip six inches from my waist, lengthen my neck to that of a swan’s and rub all the wrinkles out of my face. When I find this gown, I will waft into the room and everyone will halt with a gasp. Mens’ hearts will quicken, ladies will turn holly-green as I glide to my table as if on wheels.
Short Game Football by Stuart Betteridge PGA Golf Professional
So the shorter days are upon us. Winter greens and tees are now imminent at our courses and we are all preparing for the joys of winter golf, searching out the polo neck sweaters and wondering where you put the hand warmers and why is it you can only ever find one winter mitt! So how can you make the most of your golf game over the next few months? Especially when we try to swing a golf club dressed in layers of clothes more suited to a trek up through the Himalayas. Here’s a thought for you. Shorter days, shorter courses, shorter backswing = SHORTGAME
Men have a shave and put on a suit for a Christmas Ball, women start getting ready for it a week before. Waxing, spray tan, touching up the roots, nails. Then there’s the three day virtual fast so your stomach looks a bit flatter, an effect that will be further accentuated by the Gok Wan bodyshaper that will allow you to breathe once every five minutes. But, to be honest, we rather love it. As long as we have found THAT dress, we can relax in the surety that the big Christmas party night is going to go very well. Even if we do turn purple through lack of oxygen. It doesn’t matter that the mirror says ‘Marilyn Manson’ – if you find the outfit that makes you feel like Marilyn Monroe inside, you’ll become her. Confidence and inner va-va-voom have a way of working itself out to the surface. In the right Christmas outfit, every woman is the Belle of the Ball. Ten days? I better get cracking. Gok – where are you when I need you????
Why not work on improving your pitching and shots in from 100 yards. Why a hundred yards I here you say? Well, when we are dressed in all that winter garb, it’s highly unlikely that you are going to be swinging like John Daly. So shorten the backswing and we are on the way to controlling our distances. I’m sure you have all heard many times the gurus of golf extolling the virtues of possessing a superior short game, and this is true, we play more shots in a round of golf from inside 100 yards than anywhere else. So my suggestion is to set out to improve this area of your golf game with a winter short game plan. Seek out some guidance from a PGA professional. Firstly let’s put all the excuses to bed. Its too cold to practice! Well assuming that you have found that other winter mitt and you are in possession of your new Christmas waterproof suit and under armour gear, you should be nice and toastie on the golf course. You could always check out our Ping suits and winter wear at Kilton Forest if you want to look fab, as well as warm, but I digress!! I’ll never be a Luke Donald or I’m too old to change now! Well the beauty of this game of golf is that it doesn’t matter that you may be twenty handicap or how many years you have clocked up under your waterproof suit. Everyone has the ability to set up to the ball properly with a good grip and pitch closer than the best in the world, occasionally. Set yourself a goal this winter to work on your short game. Even when you are playing to a temporary green, on a freezing cold morning in January it’s a target and you have a distance to work to. When summer golf comes back around and the winter wear is banished to the back of the wardrobe you could be gracing the fairways with a perfect posture, relaxed hold on the club, good rhythm and distance control. You will be pleased that you decided to make your short game king. For anyone interested in lessons with Stuart please direct any enquiries to the professional shop at Kilton Forest Golf Course 01909 486563

Is Christmas a giant tummy ache?
Most of us know we can lead a healthier lifestyle – we just don’t know where to start
Yes once again we are on the build up to Christmas And doesn’t it seem to have come around very quickly? Once again we are being persuaded to spend, spend, and spend on gifts, food and drink. Well Christmas is a giant excuse to party. From the beginning of December many of us will be going to Christmas parties. Our eating and drinking habits will change and we will be getting less quality sleep because of the late nights. All these things will add to the amount of stress and how much we suffer as a consequence. So the diet has gone out of the window and you are going to drink too much. The result? Alcohol and party food will overload the digestive system. The delicate balance in bacteria of the gut is disrupted and unfriendly bacteria and yeast can overgrow. This affects your ability to digest food. You may feel the effects as indigestion, burping, heartburn nausea and flatulence. Alcohol is also going to affect the performance of the liver. And it will all have a devastating effect on the waistline! The usual nutrients we get from our normal diet are going to be missing as we do not eat the regular amounts of fruit and veg. Magnesium and fibre help the process of digestion. Alcohol also contributes to dehydration, which, together with a tendency not to drink non-alcoholic drinks means the body lacks the necessary water to form stools and therefore we suffer constipation. Constipation can mean that toxic waste products can be reabsorbed causing headaches, fatigue and skin conditions. Seventy per cent the immune system that protects us from all kinds of infection is contained in the digestive tract for the mouth to the intestines. If this environment becomes imbalanced then you may find yourself suffering repeated infections as well as the symptoms of yeast over growth such as thrush.
From the 1st of November 2011 Barnsley Health Trainer Service was brought under one contract with PSS working with Barnsley’s NHS to deliver Barnsleys Health Trainers programme. Barnsley NHS Health Trainer Service like the one above has helped hundreds of people across the town improve their health by helping them make positive changes to their lifestyle.
Health Trainers; Work one to one to support encourage and motivate you to change your lifestyle Help you set goals and develop a personal health plan Understand the barriers you faced in the past and offer realistic solutions Continually review your progress over a 12 week period Accompany you on your journey to better health
So what can you do to combat all this disruption? Well the sensible thing is to limit the amounts of over-eating and drinking. Try to choose healthier snacks such as satsumas or nuts. Try to make the days in between parties healthy eating days. Limit your alcohol intake by alternating with soft drinks and try to drink plenty of water. In general be sensible about your food and alcohol consumption. Try to choose healthier options. It might be worth visiting a health food shop to see if there are any supplements that would help you over the season. Try not to get too stressed and.......... Take time for you. I wish you all a very happy and healthy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

SMILE is a 6 week rolling program for Cancer Patients at any time of their journey from diagnosis through to survivorship. If you are a cancer patient/survivor then this program is for you. The course will be a rolling program allowing you to pick the topics that are important and will be useful to you. 16 Eye on Style Iconic Christmas buys Last December when I gave our lovely men folk some gift ideas and inspiration for the ladies in their life, little did I know that many would remember and indeed have asked for more this year (I can see a theme emerging). So if your lady says ‘don’t bother with anything for me’ or ‘I don’t know, you think of something….’ Here are the something’s that she will love you for (on Christmas morning anyway)….
Designer cases
The feel of feminimity
Oh for the Mulberry tree logo to appear on a gift! The cult status of phones, tablets and Mp3 players means that to be different, a lady needs a show stopping case. Try Mulberry and Aspinal for beautiful looks and craftsmanship without breaking the bank. Just make sure you get the right case to fit her phone or tablet!
Cashmere is an ultimate luxury, but can be so affordable in the form of a scarf that she will wear forever. Look for a classic scarf style and length, it can be worn with anything and go anywhere. Scottish cashmere is of fantastic quality and the Johnston’s of Elgin example below is very similar to a Burberry style retailing for much more! Relative newcomer, Eric Bompard has stylish takes on this luxury yarn with crystal additions.

COLUMN PENSIONS - PLAN NOW FOR THAT LONG HOLIDAY.... How does the idea of a holiday lasting perhaps 20 or 30 years sound? No more work, just a permanent break, pleasing yourself what you do every day for the rest of your life. It sounds very enticing – and it’s called retirement. The only snag, of course, is that you have to pay for it in advance. And the earlier you start paying for it, the better your lifestyle is going to be when you finally give up going to work. If you have already made adequate provision, then enjoy your forthcoming holiday years. If you have not, then you need to start taking action now as it appears that one in six of us will live until we reach 100 (Source: Daily Telegraph, December 2010). For if you don’t, you are running a serious risk of outliving your savings once you have stopped working. And a number of external factors are making it increasingly vital for people to think about their retirement planning now in order to maintain their desired standard of living later in life. The most important step is to start planning for your retirement – and to do so now. The earlier you make a start, the easier it is to create the lifestyle you want. And in doing so, take into account that pensions still represent the best option when investing for retirement. There were changes introduced on 6 April this year, which limit the amount that can be paid into a pension to 100% of salary or £50,000, whichever is lower. In addition to this, you will no longer need to purchase an annuity at age 75 which increases the flexibility around how you take your benefit. But whatever choices you make, do take action now. We are living to a greater age and retirement is going to last longer in the future. As a result, it is essential to save more. The decisions you make today will help determine the standard of living likely to be enjoyed in retirement. But the longer you leave it to take action, the more expensive it will be to catch up. Whatever your stage of life, it is important to receive expert and professional advice on your pension requirements. The role of a specialist retirement planning adviser is to help you understand the need to approach retirement planning as soon as possible and to gain a better understanding of the various opportunities available.
Employment Dilemmas by Jennifer Walker, Employment Solicitor “I’ve heard that the qualifying service for unfair dismissal will be two years. Will there be nothing I can do if my employer dismisses me before this?” The Government has recently confirmed that, from April 2012, it will reintroduce the two year qualifying service for bringing a claim for unfair dismissal. When these changes take effect, employees will not be able to bring a claim for ‘ordinary’ unfair dismissal until they have the necessary two year service. However, employees should be aware that they enjoy certain rights from day one of their employment, such as protection from discrimination. Employees are protected from discrimination in employment where it relates to a ‘protected characteristic’. Protected characteristics include age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. In some circumstances employees can be discriminated against in relation to someone else’s protected characteristic, for example: a mother being discriminated against by her employer because she has a disabled son. Employees are also entitled claim unfair dismissal from day one of their employment where the reason for dismissal is related to special circumstances, such as: pregnancy, whistle blowing, health and safety, flexible working, national minimum wage, working time or trade union rights, to name a few. These claims, however, are much more complex in their nature and are more time consuming to than a straightforward claim for ‘ordinary’ unfair dismissal. Employees wishing to pursue these day one claims should seek advice from an experienced employment law practitioner.

26 Eye on Local Business Awards for Boozy Infusions Barnsley-based alcoholic drink producer Boozy Infusions scooped two coveted awards at the annual Deliciouslyorkshire Awards. The delicious range of after dinner liqueurs wowed the judging panel with the Jamaican Ginger Cake infusion product named Best Drink 2011/2012. The drink was also named as the Consumers’ Choice Award. The event was spearheaded by deliciouslyorkshire, which champions local food and drink retailers, suppliers and producers and the ceremony celebrates the exceptional achievements of local businesses.
How to Start a Business On Line
Andy Gardiner, who developed the drinks range at his restaurant Beatson House located in the village of Cawthorne said: “I was delighted just to be shortlisted, especially alongside some of the very best producers in the country, so when the panel of experts chose Jamaican Ginger Cake Infusion as the winner I was absolutely thrilled”.
Here are some simple guidelines to starting a business on the internet, avoid the pitfalls of wasted time, effort and money with no return. 1. Identify the need - There has to be a market place for your idea, ready customers who are looking for your products or services on the internet. Can you service them? 2. Measure up the competition - Is the competition strong or weak, are their web sites large, professional looking, feature rich, do they have lots of testimonials? Inorder for you to win business, you will need to beat their websites in terms of content and credibility. Be aware this takes time to build! 3. Keyword Research – This is the essential foundation of your website, and its often neglected. Not only is it crucial to getting visitors to your site, it helps determine a strategy for going forward, it can uncover opportunities and give you an idea of potential business available. Find out what people actually type in the search box to look for your services. You can then use these words within your domain name, navigation, content, labels and links to make your site relevant to what people search for. 4. Build It – There are numerous methods of building websites from bespoke to free DIY builders, generally speaking, if you choose the cheaper option then its very likely that you will waste a little money and a lot of time. Get advice, your budget needs to cover build and ongoing marketing to be succesful. 5. Optimise Your Website – Credibility plays a massive part as to whether the seach engines send visitors to you. Building credibility comes from activity away from your website by creating a buzz about your site and creating backlinks from other sites to yours over time. 6. Tell Everyone – Never has it been so easy to get your message out, email marketing, FaceBook and twitter are the most prevalent ways to spread the word and do work well when used correctly. They are cheap and easy to harness, but you might need a little direction on what to do. Need help? Get in touch with iRUN, we can help you achieve an effective internet presence, there is an affordable solution for you, one that will get the right visitors onto your website.

School News
In 2012 Barnsley will see the opening of a new ‘Super-School’ on Dodworth Road. The Horizon Community College - and the Principal-designate, Nick Bowen, (pictured right) can’t wait to see the doors open. Not only will ‘HCC’ be the merging of the present Kingstone and Holgate schools, but it will also feature as an important part of the regeneration process of the town. Holgate’s reputation for its speciality in sport and Kingstone’s excellence in performing arts will be carried forward and expanded upon in the new school. Indeed Barnsley has been extremely fortunate to win the bid for what will be a flagship school in the country. It will house the biggest and best facilities. And how has Nick settled into Barnsley? ‘I am overwhelmed at the friendliness of the people,’ he says. ‘I have been welcomed with open arms into the community and am amazed at the beautiful countryside so near to the centre of town. Barnsley is the gem hidden between Leeds and Sheffield. A wonderfully unique and warm place.’ Get more information about the building and facilities of the Horizon Community College at: www.horizonccbarnsley.blogspot.com
