Your Little Eye 04 Are You Having a Laugh? Workplace wellness is a serious issue. With terms like “stressrelated-illness” becoming household words, organizations are increasingly looking for ways to keep their workforce happy, healthy and productive. Up until now, most organizations tended to devalue the idea of laughter at work, seeing it as a distraction from getting the “real” job done. This attitude is also reinforced by the work ethic many of us were raised with: “No pain, no gain,” as the mantra. However, we’re starting to realize that all of this suffering is killing us. Not only that, but we’re finding that it’s actually counter-productive. A recent study conducted at a top financial institution found that managers who facilitated the highest level of employee performance used humor the most often. Believe me... being the Graphic Designer for The Barnsley Eye there are loads of times that I am forced into uncontrollable laughter - especially when I am given that months print deadline date along with the amount of work yet to do!!! What the study also found is that many productive organizations are often full of very funny and resourceful people who just need to be given permission and encouragement to use their sense of humor on the job. So our “inner clown” is now our lifeline in these times of change and uncertainty. Giving him or her free rein not only results in healthier workplaces, but also increases bonding with the rest of the team. GM

My iMacs webcam records a genuine reaction to the email giving me this months Eye Print Deadline (with my knowledge of the pages still to design and put together)....

Eye on Local News 05 Kresha’s Bald Move Raises Money for Parkinsons UK Barnsley Girl Kresha Crossley decided to raise money for the Barnsley Branch of the Parkinsons UK Organisation by having her hair shaved completely off. Kresha chose Parkinsons UK as the charity to benefit from the donations and sponsors, as her brother John has Parkinsons Disease and was just 23 years old when he was diagnosed, making him one of the youngest sufferers in Britain. Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive and fluctuating neurological condition. It occurs when cells are lost from the part of the brain that controls movement. The Barnsley and District Branch meetings are held at Emmanuel Church, Huddersfield Road, Barnsley. These are normally on the third Tuesday of Every Month from 2pm-4pm. For more information you can call 01226 321 511 Currently to date Kresha has raised over £800 and still has many sponsor forms to collect in, so we can hope that she is going to pass the £1000 mark. All monies are being donated directly to the Barnsley Branch as this helps pay for Local Nurses. The role of the Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialists is as a point of contact for anyone who has Parkinson’s Disease and who needs help, advice, support, advocacy or education. For more information you can call freephone 0808 800 0303 or visit www.parkinsons.org.uk Kresha would also like to say thanks to Adele at Blue Lights Photography for photographing the event and afterwards, and also to Sally’s Glitz and Glam, Barnsley who donated a wig for her to wear.

Grappling - by Jack Land - Noble ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A hilariously gritty 1970’s northern working-class musical from the award-winning young Barnsley playwright and composer, Jack Land – Noble, (right) grandson of Barnsley Wrestler Jack Land. Based upon the glory days of British wrestling and set amidst the heated early-1970’s, through the eyes of a diligent Yorkshire mining town, ‘Grappling’ is the original ‘working-class opera’, which fuses elements of kitchen-sink drama, socio-political commentary, satire, earthy humour and physical frolics, all tied by a stirring original musical score. ‘Grappling’ chronicles Jack Harper; a man who knows his place in life; a man who had no other option but to follow the accepted route of working the seam at the local colliery. These men don’t expect change and, in blood, sweat and tears, they struggle through the years. Though ultimately a bittersweet tragedy, ‘Grappling’ is, without doubt, a unique theatrical celebration. The production also features stars of screen Peter Foster (Coronation Street / Shameless) and Reece Andrews (A Touch of Frost / Diamond Geezer) alongside a host of Lamproom Theatre favourites in what is, arguably, Barnsley’s theatrical event of the year. www.barnsleylamproom.com

Jack Land Jack Land, A.K.A. Karl Von Kramer, is the grandfather of the production’s creator and was a professional wrestler for over thirty years, both nationally and internationally. He also partnered Brian Glover as ‘The Toffs’; a successful tag-team on the wrestling circuit during the early 1960’s. ‘Grappling’ uses his wealth of experiences in the sport to create this distinctive dramatic concept. More can be read about Jack’s sporting career in the book, ‘Barnsley Sporting Heroes’, by Annie Storey.

Grass Roots Theatre on the Look out for a Bear!!!!!!! Grass Roots Theatre Group is on the look out for a realistic man- sized bear suit or bear mask. It is for their latest community drama, “A Distant Country” to be performed at the Civic from June 7th to 10th. The play tells the story of Polish people who, after the last world war, came to live in this area. The bear is Voytek, adopted as a cub by Polish soldiers in Palestine during the war and trained to the point where he could carry live shells in the famous Battle of Monte Casino. Voytek became famous throughout all of Poland and it is only recently that a statue was erected in his honour, close to the Scottish zoo where he spent his last days. It is the second time that Frazer Broadhead has played a bear; the first was in Grass Roots first community drama “One Breath.” “I think it must be my animal magnetism that makes me first choice,” he joked. “A member of the cast has supplied us with the baby Voytek, but we still need a realistic suit for the adult version.”

If you can help The Grass Roots Theatre Group with a mask or suit for the production please contact

08 Fashion News Moo Designs, Barnsley Moo Designs is a fashion shop situated in the Thomas Whitworth Forum in Barnsley. Although owner, Claire is often the face associated with Moo, it’s a team run business. Without the loyalty, dedication and support of the hardworking team, Moo would never have come so far in such a short space of time. Starting out with only two staff and business partners Kath, Michael, David and Karen – the team has now grown and the business has expanded exceeding expectations of all those involved. Here, Claire talks to the Barnsley Eye about the running of Moo, her wonderful team and advice to any young entrepreneurs planning their own business. The Moo workshop above the store is constantly buzzing as bags and accessories are made every day by Claire and the wonderfully talented Trish and Mary. The team offer a bespoke service where customers can give the team their ideas which they will endeavour to suit. “We have matched bags, belts and cuffs with dresses, footwear and even hubby’s tie!” Claire says. Although the team are constantly busy with orders and under pressure to stock the shop, they always have a laid back approach and plenty of laughs which help them get through the most chaotic of days. Claire wanted to make sure the clothing range offered something a little bit different for all ages and importantly, for all sizes. With the recent edition of the children’s Mini-moo label from 0 to 13 years old – this definitely rings true! “The clothes are designed by myself and sewn locally by the wonderful Diane” says Claire, “We also have a small section of locally designed items for men. We stock other Yorkshire designers and also our own Moo label. Katie, our in-house designer, and myself have the ideas which our brilliant local sewers Donna, Chris and Judy turn into the stock on our rails.”

Jenny - Peppercorn Jewellery

Trish and Mary

Recently, the team travelled down to London to Pure Show and placed orders for clothes, shoes and boots from around the world for their Autumn/Winter collection which they are really excited about. “It is equally as important to us to support and employ local talent as much as we possibly can though” Claire says. “I couldn’t do any of this without my right hand team of; Karen, who keeps me sane, and David, who tries to keep me in line! We would never have made it this far without their friendship and guidance.” As well as clothes, the shop also stocks jewellery and gift ideas; “We have our fantastic Peppercorn Jewellery collection which is contemporary and stunning, with individual pieces lovingly created by Jenny another treasured find. Her wedding collection has proved a real hit with brides and guests alike who want to stand out from the crowd.” Along with a great collection of clothes and accessories, the team would not be complete without a friendly and honest customer service, “Holly, Katy and Anna look great and all our customers value their honest opinions and guidance when it comes to choosing the right look for any occasion.”

Katie (in-house designer)

So, finally what advice would Claire give to anybody thinking of starting their own business? “DON’T! Only kidding! It is hard work and long hours, but if you are lucky enough to find a great team then follow that dream. Anything is possible.” Written by Rachael Divers

Eye on Books 09 June Book Review What’s Tha Up To? by Martyn Johnson Memories of an Attercliffe Bobby. Pen & Sword When asked to review this book I had just received a signed copy as a birthday gift from my daughter. As a retired South Yorkshire police officer who served in Attercliffe during the early 80’s my daughter obviously thought I would enjoy the read. How right she was. A walk down memory lane for me and I have no doubt an insight into policing in the 60’s and 70’s for other readers.

Food Glorious Flaming Food! Why couldn’t I be one of those people for whom food is merely a fuel? Why do I have to enjoy cooking and sampling and dining so much? And why did I have to give birth to two lads who think it’s SO funny to waft their fresh crusty bread hot chicken and gravy sandwiches in front of my slavering mouth with such sadistic glee? Yes I’m on a diet. And yes it is hell because deprive me of anything and I’ll start craving it. Even if it’s raw egg and brain pie. And not only can I not eat but my usual red wine is denied to me too. But I am soooo missing the socialising around a table with friends, testing out new recipes and washing it down with a oak-matured Shiraz heavier than my left leg. You see life these days is complicated by trends in what is good or bad for you. One minute red meat contains essential amino acids (O level Biology) next minute it’s the devil’s tool. And watch those BMI and cholesterol levels! Although my friend is fit, slim, runs marathons and has a cholesterol level that qualifies him as a tub of Lurpak. Mine is perfect and I’m carrying the weight of my ten year old son as excess around my midriff. Work that one out. Of course the long term plan is that I will be fitter and healthier and can return to at least a few bad habits, albeit in moderation.

And seeing as I’ve already lost 10% of my bodyweight, I’m inspired to carry on and feel those trousers loosen even further. And I have to say that I’m sleeping like a dream and have bags of energy. (I think most of the weight loss is down to the amount of saliva I lose whilst cooking for the family though.) Then of course I have to face ordeal by keeping it off – even harder than the diet itself. Because when I get down to my target weight, there’s no way I’m celebrating the achievement with a tofu salad and a glass of spring water. Alas I have inherited my grandparents genes who were both naturally rotund figures. My grandfather loved a big woman and I always knew when he said ‘Eeeh, you look bonny lass’ that I’d clapped some lard on. In saying that, the word ‘diet’ wasn’t in their dictionary. They lived happily uninformed about BMIs and GIs and the science of saturated fats. They dined on good home made stodge and the most divine home made chocolate cakes. If a dessert didn’t have 10,000 calories in it – it wasn’t worth plating up. Fit as fleas until their 80s, the pair of them. Isn’t knowledge marvellous? And pass me the stick of celery and the de-caff milkless, sugarless coffee if you must. This had SO better be worth it in the end!

Milly

The book is really a collection of short stories, some humorous, some tragic, some ironic and some amazing but all of which reflect the thoughts, feelings and emotions of the author as he dealt with them. The collection demonstrates the wide variety of incidents police officers encounter and the even more diverse nature of the people involved, but it particularly illustrates the humanity of the author himself as he lays his feelings and emotions open for public scrutiny. The fear when confronted by an armed man, the helplessness and grief when unable to save a family in a burning house, the elation on making a good arrest and the sadness and sympathy for a family without money to heat their home. All of this balanced by seeing the funny side of many of his encounters. A good ‘coffee table’ book that you can dip into and read one chapter at a time without having to re-read to refresh yourself on the plot. Recommended for nostalgic police officers and those interested in the sociology of policing in the 60’s and 70’s. Tony Murray - Former Chief Inspector, South Yorkshire Police

Robert Eaton, North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and Creative Director of the Russell Eaton salon in Barnsley and Leeds gives his consultation advice: Our appearance is what makes us unique as individuals. Even though we are unique, certain characteristics such as jaw placement and forehead shape determines face shape. There are 5 common face shapes: Oval face shape, Heart-Shaped face shape, Square face shape, Round face shape, and Long face shape. Going to the hairdresser can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you arent’ sure what you want. Ease your nerves by doing some research ahead of time, browse women’s magazines or the internet for examples of the style you’re looking for, and don’t be afraid to bring a few pictures into the salon with you. Sharing these pictures with the hairdresser will give he or she a visual idea of what type of cut you’re interested in. However, it’s important to keep in mind that just because a particular haircut looks good on Jennifer Aniston does not mean it will look good on you. Different cuts are flattering for different face shapes; determining what shape yours is can help guide you in the right direction. Tie your hair back in a ponytail and look straight ahead into a mirror. Focusing mainly on

your jawline, see if your face is round, oval, heart-shaped or square, your jawline is the most important factor in deciding what length your new cut should be. Before selecting a style let the hairdresser know what type of routine you keep and how much time you have to spend on your hair each morning. Choppy, layered cuts, for example, require much more prep time than straight sleek cuts. Being aware of your face shape comes in handy when you’re getting a new haircut, trying out a new hairstyle or testing a new makeup look. Spending just a few minutes to determine your face shape will steer you away from possible hairstyle mishaps. Look to celebrities who share your face shape for hair and makeup ideas for a flattering look. Celebrities with a round face shape include Drew Barrymore and Kelly Clarkson. Celebrities with a square face shape include Megan Fox, Paris Hilton and Keira Knightley. Celebrities with a heart shaped face include Reese Witherspoon, Demi Moore and Madonna. Celebrities with an oval face shape include Beyonce, Sienna Miller and Hayden Panettiere.

Robert Eaton, 2010

Face Shape Guide: Oval Face Shape: This is considered the perfect face shape because it is symmetrical. An oval face shape will have wider cheekbones and then narrow down to the jaw line and chin. Oval face shape will also be narrow up towards the forehead. The oval is considered to be the “perfect” face shape. This is the shape that all haircuts seek to achieve, and people who already have this shape can get away with almost any haircut.

RUSSEL EATON

Long Face Shape:

A Long face shape is similar to an oval face shape but has higher cheek bones and a high forehead. The solution for a long face is to make it look shorter. This can be achieved by adding a fringe or working with chin length cuts. Longer, shapeless styles and straight bobs serve only to further elongate.

Square Face Shape: A Square face is very common. It will be equally wide at the forehead, cheeks, and jaw line.Square faces need to avoid short crops, symmetry, or anything geometric which will enhance the squareness; instead, go for soft curves which will soften the severity of the square jawline. If you can get a slightly voluminous point at the crown, this will also detract from the square outline. Fringes can also soften the features. Stay away from blunt cuts and hard, sleek lines as these will exagerrate the square shape.

Heart-Shaped Face Shape: A Heart-Shaped face is very unique. It will be broader at the forehead and then taper into a small, narrow chin. Faces that are narrow at the bottom and wide at the top need a cut that hides the hairline with graduated fringes and a choppy styles that flick out on the ends. When the hair turns outwards rather than inwards, it equalizes the shape by giving volume around the narrow bottom of the face. If, on the other hand, your face is an upside-down heart (narrow at the top, heavier at the jaw) make sure there is fullness at the top of the head instead to balance out the chin.

Smoke Have had multiple sexual partners A weakened immune system Cervical cancer can take many years to develop. Before this happens, changes occur within the cells of the cervix. These changes are called cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) and sometimes referred to as pre cancerous changes. Regular cervical screening can help in picking up these early changes and prevent a cancer from developing. Treatment is easy and effective. Women should attend for regular cervical screening. Cervical screening is offered to all women aged between 25 and 64. Between the ages of 25 and 49 you will receive invitations to attend 3 yearly, from the age of 50 – 64 this will be 5 yearly. Changes in the cells of the cervix are often associated with HPV (Human Papilloma virus). This is transmitted by sexual intercourse. HPV shows no symptoms and most women are affected at some point in their lives. From 2008 a national immunization programme provides HPV vaccination to girls of 12 and 13 years that provides protection against viruses that cause about 70% of cervical cancers. Symptoms to watch out for include; Bleeding during or after intercourse, Bleeding between periods, Bleeding following the menopause, Unpleasant vaginal discharge, Discomfort and pain during intercourse These symptoms may be signs of other common conditions but should always be checked out by your doctor.

Eye on Local Business 13 Holistic @ Gems by Sam Dymock Sam joined Gems on Huddersfield Road in March 2010 after training and working within the Beauty industry for 11 years, she covers a whole range of alternative therapy / Holistic treatments such as Hopi Ear Candle , Indian Head Massage, Aromatherapy massage, Deep Tissue Massage to name but a few plus a new treatment to the salon Hot Stone Massage. What is known as ‘alternative therapy’ has been a part of the eastern world’s regime of sciences for thousands of years. This science enables people to keep in focus the paths they have chosen. The ancient healing art of stone massage, a modality for physical and spiritual balancing. Working in harmony using various massage techniques and warm stones, relaxing the body at its deepest level. Stone Massage is very effective to create harmony and a positive energy flow. Barnsley Eye went along to Gems to see Sam and what the Hot Stone Massage was all about! Sam began the Hour long massage by explaining in detail what she would be doing throughout the treatment “I must admit I was a little apprehensive to start with but Sam explained everything which made me feel at ease, she explained what each stone was for and started with the Cosy Toes which straight away filled me with a warm glow as the name suggests these small stones are placed between your toes and the warm feeling they give instantly makes you start to relax, Sam then moved on to my lower back where a larger stone is placed wrapped in a towel, this again gives a warm relaxing effect once these are in position Sam then starts with the massage first using an essential oil over the legs followed by the hot stones which I thought would be rough and heavy but in fact were delicate and smooth the massage then moves onto the arms, back and neck where I felt the massage got more intense as the stones are pushed into the areas where Sam can feel stress. The powerful ‘metasthetic’ energies of Stone Massage are known to promote a harmonising and cleansing effect allowing for a medative state of quietude and calm which is exactly how I felt throughout the whole experience. The application of hands in conjunction with stones produces intensified contact with the unique energies of the stones and the universal energy assisting with the energy flow within and directing the vital flow to areas of blockage.

This unique therapy using stones that are formed by sedimentary and volcanic action, is a very effective modality, not only because of the warm stone’s thermal conduction effect which bring about local and systemic changes in the body, but also can influence the energy centres for body and mind balancing. It is of extreme importance that the stones used are conducive to Stone Therapy, not just any stone can be used! This massage is amazing and I felt very relaxed after and a lot more stress free if you are looking for an alternative massage and have often wondered like I did what a Hot Stone Massage can do for you why not give Sam a call at Gems on 01226 243300 you wont be disappointed. The Hot Stone Massage has been newly introduced to the salon by Sam and is on an introductory offer until 26th June. Holistic at Gems , Huddersfield Road, Barnsley 01226 243300

Are You Feeling Your Age? by Maria Nortcliffe Have you noticed a few grey hairs or an extra wrinkle around the eyes just lately? Is your age creeping up on you and giving you a nasty surprise?

Well I’m sorry to say there are some things that you just cannot change but you can help yourself to deal with the advancing years so that they treat you a little more kindly. It seems that there is so much pressure to maintain an air of youthfulness. Grey hair is not the best look these days and so many talk about having cosmetic surgery, botox, or some other enhancement, just to fit in with the crowd. Have you remembered the old saying beauty comes from within? We all want to make the best of what we have and laying a good foundation is key to achieving this. The funny thing is that the advice is basically what we are being told to do over and again. So here goes… Eat well. A good diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables is sensible. Green leafy vegetables such as watercress, spring greens and curly kale and foods rich in calcium and other minerals such as magnesium, zinc and copper are important for bone health. Include foods rich in omega 3, like olive oil, nuts and seeds and oily fish, up to three times a week to maintain healthy joints and brain function. Slow energy releasing carbohydrates such as rice, pasta and wholemeal bread help to maintain a healthy weight. Remember that being overweight can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

body. Physically it makes your heart beat faster helping to take oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body and removing the waste products. It maintains a healthy heart helping to keep arteries clear and is a defence against heart disease. What is good for the heart is also good for the brain. Full body activity is more important than just brain training. Studies are beginning to show that engaging in moderate physical activity such as walking, swimming or yoga can help protect against the risk of developing mild memory problems. Joints and bones also need care. Today’s lifestyle means that we all spend far too much time sitting down, usually behind the same desk at work, performing the same repetitive tasks. Gradually the network of tissues around the joints become thicker, less elastic and drier making you more prone to common conditions such as tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and arthritis. An exercise such as yoga will strengthen and loosen joints while at the same time respecting their intricacy. Bones also are affected by age. As you age bone lose some of their density particularly in women after the menopause. Moderate exercise, especially weight bearing exercise, helps to maintain bone density. Make sure you have an active social life. Being among friends is a huge tonic. Sometimes it helps to share problems with a friend- remember a problem shared is a problem halved. Sometimes we are able to laugh more when with friends and there is nothing that lifts your mood more effectively than laughter. Did you know that if you can laugh first thing in the morning you are more likely to laugh through out the day? It takes far fewer muscles to smile than to frown. It is also an instant facelift a real full-face smile lifts the whole of the lower facial structure. Learn to take time out for you. You are an extremely important person and you deserve some time just for you. So many people tell me that they just do not have time to spare for themselves but they really are not helping themselves. The moment we interact with other people we take on a role, mum, dad, wife, husband, boss, secretary, member of a team, cook, and the list goes on. We become that person others expect us to be, but what about the person we want to be. Take some time to be just you. If you find it a real problem then book some time for a complementary therapy. Have a massage, or some reflexology find the treatment that suits you and go for it regularly so that you can return to the rat race refreshed, relaxed and ready to take on what life throws at you. Aging? What is that? Look after yourself, watch your weight, eat healthily and get some exercise. The fitter and healthier you are the younger you feel inside. Enjoy life! Maria Nortcliffe M.A.R M.I.C.H.T

Drink more water. Water hydrates every part of your body helping to lubricate joints and wash away toxins. It helps to keep the brain functioning efficiently. It also helps to hydrate the skin plumping up the cells and smoothing wrinkles. Try to deal with stress. Wipe out as many of the stress causing things in your life as possible. Research is already pointing to stress as a cause for wrinkles, not to mention a host of other ailments. Reorganise your work load, try to be positive about what you are able to achieve, be kind to yourself and don’t work long hours after the end of the working day. Take time to rest and relax. This is time for recreation and renewal. Take this time and you will return to work the next day rested after a good night’s sleep, able to work efficiently and with enthusiasm. Work late into the night and you will start the day tired because your mind has not switched off and depressed because the day brings more of the same pressure, tasks seem more onerous and seem to take longer to complete.

by Claire Bryan at Sparkle & Gloss

Meet the Expert Artistic Director & Regional Educator for Paul Mitchell, Zena Claire.

Barnsley Eye asked the expert this month, Zena Claire Regional Educator & Stage Artist for Paul Mitchell, Just how do we keep our hair looking good at home – what’s the secret..?

Hot Hollywood hair

Priadara Professional is derived by science but approved by nature. Every product contains two or more essential oils. When blended together certain essential oils have a mutually enhancing effect on each other thus increasing the overall effects on the skin.

the stage/ salon shine, they will clean your hair only, end of!!

“I have heard that question so many times before, and the answer is in a word “tools”. As an hair artist I firmly believe that to create the mirror image of what your designer has created for you, you need to use the same tools as them to try and achieve the nearest to the look they have created.” Step 1 – cleanse & hydrate: always take advise from your designer as to what take home products you should use at home – medicated products of the past era will not give you

Step 2- invest in salon quality electrical & brushes- a good salon will always have a retail area with the tools they use in the salon for you to take home. Dryers, irons, wands & essential brushes. Step 3 – “liquid Tools”build style, smooth & protect with the right designer recommendations – I recommend The Paul Mitchell Range as it has all types of hair covered whether you want smooth, teased or blown. Go big time like Marilyn or get Farrah’s flicks with rounders & re discover film star glamour. Don’t you deserve the best??

Priadara skincare is divided into 5 skin modes, each with a signature colour and name to help you recognise the products at a glance. Control — for oily/overactive skins. Aloe vera, grapefruit, cypress and may chang will soothe and draw out impurities. Allantoin and safflower promote skin healing and balance. Sedate — for delicate/irritated skins. Mango seed and Vitamin E counteract tightness adding moisture. Raspberry extract reduces sensitivity and camomile, lavender and neroli soothe, reduce redness and regenerate Quench — for dry/dehydrated skins. Hemp oil with essential fatty acids improves the hydro lipid coat of the skin responsible for good cellular health. Sandalwood, frankincense and neroli moisturise whilst panthenol aids tissue healing. Energise — for mature/tired skins. Lemon makes skin look brighter, whilst avocado balances moisture and borage oil repairs cells. Rose and sandalwood nurture and nourish to leave the skin looking and feeling younger. Stabilise — for unbalanced/unhappy skins. Camelina oil gently treats these skins without causing dryness, olive and shea butter moisturise, whilst geranium and mandarin regulate and balance.

16 Eye on Local Business Touch of Evil - Tattoo & Art Studio, Barnsley Based at no 1 School Street, Barnsley just off Huddersfield Road, Touch of Evil was established in early 2008 by Adam Sargent.

“My aim is to try and make people aware that there is a lot more to getting a tattoo than just walking into a shop and picking something off the wall. As this will be permanently inked into your skin, I feel that people need to take the time to brainstorm ideas to come up with something special, something that you would never have even thought possible”.

Adam has been in the UK for a number of years and with a passion for art opened the Tattoo and Art Studio, previously working as a comic book graphic artist and animator he has also worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic artist for individuals and companies. Adam specialises in Custom Tattoos where your ideas are turned into a one of a kind unique tattoo, “I enjoy taking peoples thoughts and ideas and turning them into a piece of art that exceeds all of their expectations.” He goes on to say:

If you have an idea for a tattoo, take the time to stop by the shop and see Adam we are sure you wont be disappointed he will discuss and put your thoughts for your skin (onto paper first) giving you that bespoke individual unique tattoo you’ve been looking for! Adam has also been commissioned by many individuals for animations, paintings, family portraits and caricatures another side to what Adam can offer at Touch of Evil.

Denim to snap up this season Denim is appearing in all sorts of guises from dresses to jumpsuits to duffle bags but it’s not to everyone’s tastes. If you invest in two new denim pieces only (aside from jeans) then you can’t go wrong with these: The denim shirt dress - we’ve seen it before but it’s so versatile we’re delighted to have it back. You can dress it up or down and it’s a perfect holiday piece too. The denim skirt - it’s almost as much of a wardrobe regular as jeans. There’s always a good range of cuts to choose from and it goes with any colour. Find the cotton denim versions for summer. Do’s and Don’ts with jeans Consider the weight of the denim: structure and stiff fabrics are not ideal for curvier shapes, they should opt for softer denim. If you want the look without the stiff fabric you can find cotton denim and denim coloured clothes.

Sexy Snacks & The City Mornin’ Mr Magpie “Get them shoes off the table!! IT’S BAD LUCK!!” Meet my mam… the Oracle of all sayings, proverbs and most of all superstitions. In the words of Stevie Wonder, she’s very superstitious and after a quick survey from friends and family it seems so are most of us. From traditional superstition through to OCD – many of us are becoming obsessed with irrational rituals we think will stave off danger or protect us from harm. A recent report from the Mental Health Foundation found that more than 7 million Brits currently suffer anxiety problems and 77% of us have seen the world as a more frightening place since 9/11. Hence the reason why people take refuge in superstition and ritual, after all, we may not be able to control what goes on in the world, but we can have some control over our small part of it. How many of you throw salt over your shoulder to ‘ward off the devil’? Do you own ‘lucky knickers’? Or find yourself walking in a John Cleese fashion as you try to avoid cracks in pavements? One woman I know puts her clothes pegs in colour sequence on the washing line. Another has to touch every item she comes into contact with, with both hands so it ‘feels even’ and I know loads of people who, after looking in the back of an ambulance, insist on holding their collars until they see a walking dog or a flying bird. My nan even insists on saying ‘Good Morning’ to sheep in fields as she says it will stop it from raining. I know perfectly sane people who ‘ask the angels’ for things they want from life – regardless of the common sense argument that if every single person asked for a free parking space we wouldn’t all get one. Bertrand Russell once said “Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom”. With David Beckham, Cameron Diaz and Florence Welch all admitting to their lives being ruled by irrational fears and the obsession to perform certain rituals, it’s this fear that stops many people from dropping their rituals ‘because something bad might happen’. Myself, I refuse to believe that if I step on a beetle it will rain (unless it happened to be Paul McCartney, but I think Heather Mills has already tried that). Neither do I believe that if I pick a dandelion I will pee the bed, a black cat will bring bad luck, or that I will see my husband in the mirror if I peel an apple in front of it at midnight. (at midnight, I’m more likely to catch my husband with his head in the fridge munching away). I’ve lost count of the number of times people have sent me their ‘chain’ mails because I’m the only one who dare delete them (you know the ones, they usually feature a sickly poem about best friends accompanied by a footnote threatening you with death if you don’t forward them to at least 10 people) and I prefer my ‘lucky’ rabbit’s feet left on the ends of rabbit’s legs, thank you very much. Yes, I wear a horseshoe charm around my neck, but that’s more to do with Carrie Bradshaw than Lady Luck.

Cupcakes took over the world when Carrie Bradshaw and co. were seen enjoying them in Sex and The City, but what will be the next food trend for fashionistas when Sex and The City 2 opens? Whoopie Pies have been a massive hit in New York, and now these sponge cake and mallow buttercream delicacies have reached the UK and gone nationwide at M&S. Available in Chocolate with Vanilla, Vanilla with Chocolate and Toffee these bite sized treats will be perfect for sharing with friends at the cinema or enjoying over a good girlie gossip. 50 M&S stores sold out of Whoopie Pies on their opening weekend, but stocks are being replenished ready for the end of May when no dedicated follower of fashion will be without a pack in her designer handbag. At M&S the cupcake has also been updated for the summer season with new frosting designs and a new flavour. Try the new Chocolate Button Cupcake – vanilla sponge, with vanilla frosting, topped with a milk chocolate button and chocolate sprinkles. The Strawberry & Vanilla Cupcake is now topped with a white chocolate covered strawberry for extra indulgence, while the Chocolate Blackout Cupcake now has a swirl of Vanilla Frosting to finish the look. M&S Cupcakes are now also available from Food to Order – simply order online, in store or by phone for your next party or wedding. The luxury snacking trend debuts in the Biscuit aisle this July, with the launch of Layered Cookies. Take a delicious all butter cookie, top it with chocolate truffle and honeycomb nibs, smother it in thick milk chocolate and sprinkle with honeycomb for the last word in indulgence. Milk Chocolate & Honeycomb is accompanied by Milk Chocolate & Caramel and White Chocolate & Lemon Layered Cookies in the biscuit collection.

Meanwhile, I have to sign off. I’ve just seen a sole magpie and simply cannot type, spit and salute all at the same time…

Woodys Fish & Chips Woody’s Fish and Chips are a family-run business of traditional fish and chip shops in Barnsley. Our first shop in Shafton opened in December 2008 which was a huge success and well received by the local community. Following this success and positive comments from our customers, we decided to open a second shop in Monk Bretton in September 2009. Our choice of products and the environment in which we have created in our shops has helped us gain the reputation we have. All our fish (Cod and Haddock) are supplied from economically sustainable sources from the pristine seas around Iceland - Frozen At Sea within 4 hours of being caught which ensures the highest possible quality and value. One of our “must try’s” at Woody’s is our JUMBO Cod which can be up to 18 inches long! This mammoth of a fish is said to be one of the most tasty and succulent fish our regular jumbo warriors have ever had. You may also want to try our spicy curry, it has our customers hooked once they’ve tried it for the first time. In May 2010, both shops were awarded the full ‘Top Marks’ a 5 Star rating for the highest possible food safety and hygiene standards following random inspections by the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council regulatory services. You can find out what your other local takeaways/restaurants have scored by visiting www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk. Our latest addition to the menu is our fresh and succulent spit roast chickens. These will be available to buy either as a half chicken or full chicken from 3.30pm every day. Feel free to cut out the voucher to get a free portion of chips when you purchase a half or full chicken. (only available from our Monk Bretton shop at the moment) Both shops are open Monday to Friday 11.30am - 8.00pm and Saturday 11.30am - 6.00pm. Eye on Entertainment Gig Review Love Music Hate Racism - by Jeff Platts Rumours Rumours Rumours!!....as a seasoned advocate and keen participant of music festivals for a number of years. I absolutely love the rumours that begin prior to, and continue throughout your average festival weekend….here’s some of my favourites over the years: ‘Michael Jackson is in town and the organisers have been seen building an helicopter pad next to the main stage!’ Sport Aid Festival – Sheffield Don Valley Stadium 1984 ‘The Queen Mother has died!’ – Glastonbury Festival 1989…(and every subsequent year until her Maj’s actual demise in the Spring of 2002)

‘They’ve run out of Earl Grey in the Tiny Tea Tent! – Beautiful Days Festival 2006 ‘Jimmy Saville is comparing the main stage!’ – Leeds Festival 2004 Of coarse I could go on and on, indeed I am such a champion of the festirumour that if I haven’t heard one by the time the first cold one hits my lips, then I’ll start one myself! LMHR’s 1st May Northern Carnival and festival held in Barnsley was no different from any other. By mid week prior to the event rumours were rife, ‘Have UB40 pulled!?’…..’ I’ve been told The Specials are headlining, but don’t tell anyone!’….one of my favourites which apparently came via the police authorities overtime rosta emailed to all employees….’Dizzee Rascal and Jedward are appearing so all leave is cancelled this weekend!’….. only to be overshadowed by…..’Bri Shaughnessy of 7th Son has shaved his head for LMHR!’ After moseying around a few of the afternoon venues I gravitated towards the White Bear eventually, where 2 of Barnsley’s unsung hero’s and champions of the local live music scene Pat Crawford and Bri Featherstone were front and rear of house. I arrived just as local punk favourites Most Likely To Fail hit the boards. Their sound pulls no punches and their new front man David Melvin throws his lyrics into your ears via the aid of an audio slingshot, no compromise….if you don’t like it…jog on! As a fan of punk, I have followed MLTF’s progress for a while, I like em. Following on from the MLTF was the tireless Rakkiteers. This bunch of punk influenced loons can, and will take the roof right off, re slate it, point and bed in your ridge tiles…then take the blighter straight back off again! A covers band that frequently work for nothing for charitable causes, LMHR being one, Barnsley Hospice being another, The Rakkiteers deliver the music that everyone wants to listen to. The Black Lamps brought a very different, organic feel to the White Bear as the afternoon raced on. It was all going too quick for my liking…..I wanted to stay in the White Bear and pitch my tent for the weekend at this point. This was the first time I’d heard these guys, much to my shame as most of the band are made up of friends and acquaintances, all of whom absolutely ooze talent. I am always reticent to compare one band to the next or engage in the ‘they sound like’ conversations, but The Black Lamps took me back to the Leadmill in Sheffield circa 1990/91. For those that can remember Chapterhouse (who I hear have recently reformed…though it may be a rumour?) with the odd lick of Joy Division, throw in a huge sound scape of guitar wizardry courtesy of Linden Scarfe and you achieve ‘music absolution!’….. fantastic, and I for one will be following ney stalking this bands every move in the future…..I cant wait to see a full set from The Black Lamps!

00

If the 3 previous bands left me craving more, then the final band for the afternoon quenched every thirst gland in my ample physique…….you cant follow Seventh Son….not even with Jedward!!? The history of Seventh Son is very well documented, some 30 years of proper heavy mekal (thats not a typo) have ensured that the bands army of fans at home and abroad have remained loyal for what seems like for ever!... even Metalica’s Lars Ulrich has said Seventh Sons early recordings had a massive influence on his own music! (that fact is most definitely NOT a rumour!) in my opinion Seventh Son, fronted by the legendary Bri Shaughnessy deserve the freedom of Barnsley (or whatever it is that footy teams get when they win stuff?) Bri’s funny quips keep the audience in good spirits between hard and frequently fast guitar charged classic heavy metal tunes. The crowd hung on his every word, you just knew Bri was gunna be coming out with another one liner by the dead pan look on his face as he approached the mic between each song. ‘Thanks for supporting Love Music Hate Rasicm ladies and gentlemen, and thanks for coming to see us this afternoon, whilst I’m here and have the opportunity, I would like to inform you all that I am selling a 3 piece suite, 50 quid and I’ll even deliver it for you…this next song is called The Last Witch in England!’…..pure class! So where next for these lads?...a civic reception in the Lord Mayors Chambers followed by a live open top bus tour of our beautiful town, causeways lined with faithful fans, street vendors flogging I love Seventh Son badges, and Hamleys in London stocking Bri Shaughnessy dolls with gripping vocals. I should have gone home at this point, it would have been the perfect end to a perfect day, however, one rumour did get the better of me and was proven to be true. Neville Staple and his band were appearing in The Courthouse Car Park and LMHR Carnival central, and were to be followed by the Trojan Sound System. Result with a capital R as far as I was concerned. After nipping home to change my t shirt, take a shower (from a can) and grab a waterproof I was back in town…… unfortunately that’s practically all I have to say about that…… Gremlins in the system ensured a very narked Reverend and his Makers left the stage feeling disgruntled to say the least. Due to the breakdowns, late change over’s etc, Neville Staple did a very short set lasting all of 15 minutes. He had the older members of the crowd bobbing and skankin to Specials classics only to leave after 5 tunes…..I was deflated!...given the gremlins and the one off nature of this event, did no-one have the cahoonas to extend the curfew, or was it more than someone’s job was worth!?...Not to worry, the Triojan Soundsystem was to follow, old school ska of the highest order.....Frankly it took longer to get their gear on stage and set up properly than it did to do their set!? I came away feeling cheated if I’m completely honest. Were it not for the fringe gigs in the afternoon, the very stuff that costs nowt, the very stuff that is put together by volunteers and passionate Barnsley people, then I for one would have been returning to my little emotional ocean that is Darfield very despondent. Despite my critique of the night stuff….the Anti Racist messages were loud and clear. The music lovers of Barnsley had come together and spat in the eye of intolerance and bigotry….it was a fantastic achievement that we as a township can be mighty proud of. Anyone up for repeating the fringe stuff next year?..... ..........give me a call, I’m in!

Eye on Property 35 WHAT ARE THE REAL COSTS OF A HOUSE SALE? If you’re putting your house on the market, you probably realise that there will be an estate agent’s fee, the cost of preparing a Home Information Pack, a solicitor’s fee and the removals firm to pay, but those are simply the financial costs. Moving home is said to be the third most stressful life event, and we ask property expert and former presenter of BBC1’s To Buy or Not to Buy, Sarah Walker what the ‘real’ costs of a house sale are. When you’re aware of exactly what might cause the stress of moving home and the associated costs, you’re half way to making it much easier on yourself! 1. Cost of presenting your house: Firstly, you have to appreciate that while your property is on the market, it’s not primarily ‘your home’. Whilst there’s no need to go de-cluttering wildly and hiding every personal object, you do need to compromise on how you might normally live your everyday life. You should be taking every viewing, and you might not be given much notice, so the house needs to be clean and tidy pretty much all the time. And that can be hard to keep up, particularly if it takes a while to sell. 2. Uncertainty of the sale: Until contracts are exchanged, nothing is legally binding and it’s quite common for the process to take 3 months. During that time, chains can break – remember, you may be just one in a series of linked buyers and sellers, and if one of those others pulls out of a sale or purchase, everything may be put on hold until another is found to complete the chain again. That may not only mean it takes more time to get to exchange, but if the people you’re buying from decide they can’t wait any longer, you could lose your dream home. 3. Ongoing bills: Whilst you’re waiting for your house to sell, you will still have the ongoing costs of the mortgage payments, building’s insurance, council tax and other bills that you are committed to. An average house sale can take anything from 3-6 months, so it can add up to a significant amount, and if you’re needing do downsize, that can be quite a pressure. So is there a way to avoid some of these ‘costs’ and make selling cheaper, easier and less stressful? Generally, the quicker the process, the less stressful it is, so if you can sell to someone who doesn’t have a related sale and will exchange contracts within one or two weeks, you’re avoiding most of the stress. There are companies that specialise in buying quickly and although you may not get quite the same price as an agent is telling you someone might pay, you will have a definite sale, avoid paying an agent’s fee and reduce other associated costs. And if peace of mind is the most important thing to you, it’s an option well worth considering.

Confessions of an Estate Agent…. The moment anyone finds out what I do for a living, I almost always get the same question; “So ....what do you think my house is worth?” The answer I give is usually along the lines of; it depends what the person walking through your door is prepared to pay and what you are prepared to accept. In many cases these two prices don’t always meet. But as a seller there are some simple things you can do to try and get that person walking through the door to offer what you are willing to accept. Firstly, play the role of the buyer and walk round your own house picking up on any possible negative things.. Does your bedroom need a new coat of paint? Does that trusted old stairs carpet need replacing? Does the grass need cutting? Etc. We may not get that much sunshine here in Barnsley, but what little we do, we love to spend in the garden. Plant some flowers, mow the lawn and, if you have any, put the patio furniture up so potential buyers can imagine having that all important BBQ! Buyers love surfing the web and looking at brochures when searching for the perfect home, they also love photographs. Make sure, when your Estate Agent comes round to take pictures, every room is clean, tidy and not cluttered. If you have pets, particularly dogs, have someone walk them for when you have viewings. In my experience, some people can get very nervous around pets and often don’t spend that much time viewing the property. Greet the viewer and show them around the property. After you have shown them round ask if they would like to have a look on their own. I often find people like to look at the property by themselves as they can take more in. Finally… if, when you get an offer, it isn’t what you had been hoping for, don’t reject it straight away. If you have seen a property you like, make a lesser offer on that one. Inform the sellers’ agent you have an offer on your own property which is less than your asking price, and if their vendors were prepared to take a lower offer you could proceed with a sale. pre-season friendlies against local opposition. The Reds will travel to York City on July 20th, followed by home fixtures against Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday on July 24th and 27th, and rounding off at Chesterfield’s new b2net Stadium on July 31st. The local rivalry should ensure that the games are competitive and they will provide a strong indication of how well Mark Robins has rebuilt his squad ahead of the Championship campaign. The anticipation is building already…Come on you Reds!

Adam Brammer

Several experienced players – including Jon Macken, Darren Moore, Rob Kozluk, Anderson De Silva and Daniel Bogdanovic - have all been shown the exit door as the manager tries to freshen things up and instil a winning mentality within the team. Gone are the days when securing safety is viewed as a success, and Robins certainly has aspirations to compete further up the league table. Although several squad members have left, the gaffer is still in talks to try and retain the services of Player of the Year Hugo Colace and has already managed to recruit two new players in the form of Jim O’Brien and Jason Shackell. The former is a young winger / striker with plenty of potential who has represented Scotland at Under 21 level. The latter is an experienced centre-half who won rave reviews while on loan at Doncaster last term and the Reds have beaten off a number of Championship clubs to secure his signature. Mark Robins is certainly being proactive in the transfer market and these two signings are likely to be the first of many – so watch this space! Meanwhile the club have also arranged a number of intriguing
