Holiday in Thailand Nearly ends in Tragedy A couples holiday to Thailand almost ended in tragedy when a man needed lifesaving brain surgery. Robert and Pauline Allott were three days into their three-week stay in Pattaya when he felt unwell while lying by the pool. The retired computer technician was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and underwent a six-hour operation. On his return to Barnsley Robert said “To all You people planning a trip to Thailand or any other country make sure you are well covered with travel Insurance. The Travel Insurance company picked up the cost and organised my trip home, I had to be escorted home by a nurse the insurance company arranged everything from ambulance to take me to the airport and from Manchester airport to my home in Barnsley I had to travel in business class. Without the expertise of the Doctors and intensive care nurses I would have not survived without any loss of any of my mental and physical abilities. It is now a question of taking things easy and making a full recovery. once given the all clear will be travelling back to Thailand and pay a visit to the hospital and thank the staff for all they did for me” Robert has set up a website www.yorkshirealltrades.co.uk with part of the website being dedicated to the Bangkok Hospital as a thank you to all they have done for him.

Eye on Local News 05 Qdos Creates at The Civic How to inspire boys and help them to reach their full potential is a challenge for everyone who works with young people. Moved By Art at The Gallery aims to develop links between The Civic and local schools, introduce children and their parents to the exhibition and performance spaces, and encourage wider active participation in the arts. As the first joint project between Qdos Creates and The Civic, it is also a wonderful showcase for their collaborative relationship. Class 5DT, a group of 31 boys, aged seven, eight and nine, from South Hiendley primary school, are working with Qdos Creates’ dance theatre development worker Katy Marsh to create ‘Take a Seat’, a piece of dance and physical theatre inspired by The Civic’s exhibition, ‘A Century of Chairs’. The boys are being taught at school in a single sex group to help teachers to concentrate on bringing out the best in them.

Boys from South Hiendley primary school, are seen working with The Civic & Qdos

‘Take a Seat’, which will be performed to mark the close of the exhibition, is inspired by what we use chairs for; from watching television to driving a car, sleeping and playing computer games. “We are overwhelmed by the energy and enthusiasm shown by the boys’ group, who are enjoying the freedom and physicality of the project,” says Anjie Taylor, Artistic Director, Qdos Creates. “Teachers from the school have shown great interest and commitment and everyone is looking forward to performing in the Assembly Room. The Project is funded by the Arts Council England Grants for the Arts scheme, is being documented by Barnsley dance photographer Gavin Joynt. His work will help to bring alive the excitement of dance and physical theatre, combined with the visual appeal of the exhibition. ‘Take a Seat’ is performed in The Assembly Room at The Civic, Hanson Street at 6.30pm, Wednesday, March 10. To reserve tickets please call The Civic Box office 0845 1800 363.

06 Eye on Local News Barnsley Band Could be Off to a Flyer! A BARNSLEY band who are in the running to win a recording deal have launched a competition to get a member of the public to perform on stage with them. Green Ball Flyers - will be performing at Sheffield City Hall in the finale of the regional heat for music competition Live and Unsigned. And now they are planning some X-Factor style auditions to find someone to sing on stage with them. Lead singer Mark said: “It’s a great opportunity for us and when we got talking about it we realised how few opportunities there were for singers to perform with a live band. I remember being younger and being desperate to perform - so we just wanted to give someone else a chance as well. I don’t mind stepping to one side to let them perform a few numbers at our gig. I can’t wait to begin our search.” The competition - will be open to those over 16. Open auditions will be held on March 11 at the brand new Theatre Live venue in Barnsley, with singers competing for the chance to sing live on stage with GBF at Sheffield City Hall during the Live & Unsigned regional final. The lucky winner will also receive professional vocal coaching, studio time to record a Green Ball Flyers track, a professional photo shoot with the band and the chance to perform lead vocals at a live gig in April, with the gig being recorded and streamed live via the internet.

www.greenballflyers.com

Live and Unsigned 2010 Live and Unsigned is the largest national music competition for original artists; bands, vocal groups and solo artists. Over 30,000 acts have auditioned over the last three years. The competition provides a great opportunity to perform live in front of some of the country’s top producers, Label execs. promotors and DJs. Winners of the regional finals will win the chance to compete in the Grand Final and the Live and Unsigned Festival at the O2 in London. The judges look primarily at musical ability, originality and performance capability. The judges will be seeking an act that has the potential to be successfully launched in the UK as a major recording artist. Subsequently, motivational skills are essential. The competitors who can sell themselves to those around them will give themselves every opportunity of winning Live and Unsigned. We here at The Eye would like to wish the 2 local bands The greenball Flyers and Mulcahey the very best of luck in the regional finals this month.

Healthwise Unit Opens

Eye on Local News 07

A lively crowd braved the cold weather last month to meet football legend David Seaman on Cheapside as he officially launched the unique Mobile Cancer Information Unit. David posed for pictures, signed autographs and cut the ribbon on the Healthwise branded van that will tour the town providing information, support and advice on cancer prevention and healthy lifestyles. David agreed to launch the unit because his Dad, Rodger, was treated for Bowel Cancer here at the Hospital. David (right) said: “I hope this helps to save a lot of lives in and around Barnsley and it’s a terrific idea to get messages about cancer out into the local community. It was a pleasure to come back to South Yorkshire and say thank you to the hospital for the care they gave my dad.” The service is a partnership between the hospital and NHS Barnsley to focus on education and support for young people, the general public and existing families, patients and carers. Cancer Information and Support Manager, Katie Hopkins, will take the van around Barnsley to educate people on what they can do to reduce their risk of getting the disease by living a healthier lifestyle.

Above: Passer by Mr Ian Harrison couldn’t resist the chance to personally thank David for his involvement with the project. He himself had had a testicular cancer scare. Ian joked: “Who would have thought it David - you used to save goals for England and now you save balls for Englishmen”. Make no wonder David laughed... Barnsley humour at it’s best!

08 Eye on News Shocking Results of BMI Fat Map Inspire Campaign New data reveals that the average person in Barnsley is clinically overweight, with a BMI of 27. Now anyone concerned about their weight and health, or that of their family or loved ones, is being invited to join a campaign to tackle obesity in the area. The ‘Let’s Beat It Together in Barnsley’ campaign has been launched by Slimming World after their UK BMI map showed that six out of 10 people in Yorkshire and the Humber are overweight or obese, placing them at risk of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The national slimming club, the UK’s leading weight loss company, has now launched a community weight loss challenge in key parts of the region. all Slimming World groups are on a mission to raise awareness in the local community of the benefits of healthy eating and moderate activity. The message is that with the right support, making small changes to our daily routines can be easy and can make a huge difference to our lives and the lives of our loved ones. The campaign will encourage local residents in communities across the whole nation to join a 12 week challenge to tackle obesity. The campaign launches in local groups from 22 February 2010 and the organisers are hoping the community focus will help give people a common goal – to inspire each other to lose between 5% and 10% of their weight in 12 weeks and make Barnsley a healthier place. One person who will definitely be joining the campaign is local member Helen Hewitt who joined the Barugh Green group in may 2007 and lost 1 stone 7lbs – 10% of her body weight in 14 weeks. As part of Slimming World’s commitment to beating obesity, the company has pledged to give the group with the highest average weight loss during the 12 week challenge £1,000 for a community project of their choice. Anyone interested in finding out more about Slimming World’s ‘Let’s Beat It Together’ campaign should go along to their nearest local group.

The Mall Continues Supporting Barnsley Hospice Barnsley Hospice is set to benefit from the support of The Mall again this year, with the shopping centre setting itself a target of again raising £10,000 through its Mall Cares campaign. Last year The Mall raised £14,794.84 as part of the campaign, which was presented to Sue Miller of The Hospice by Mark Broadhead, The Mall Barnsley’s General Manager. The Mall will also be organising a host of other activities throughout 2010 with the charity, in addition to supporting a number of the Barnsley Hospice’s annual events such as the Golf Day in May and its Midnight Walk in June as well as organising their own events such as a ‘Hospice week’, with one of the activities taking place being a bicycle race. This will consist of The Mall team and retailers on stationary bikes cycling the equivalent of Lands End to John O’Groats with all sponsorship money raised going to Barnsley Hospice. Commenting on The Mall’s announcement, Sue Miller, Events Fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice says: “We are delighted to have the full support of the Mall Cares campaign behind us again. 2010 is already set to be a fantastic year for the Hospice and we have many great events lined up to raise awareness of the work we do. The commitment given by the Mall will help us to generate vital funds enabling us to continue providing specialist palliative care to the local community” Mark Broadhead, General Manager of The Mall Barnsley adds: “We have made a conscious decision to continue to support the Hospice this year, to build on the work both teams have started and are determined to raise as much money as possible for Barnsley Hospice.“The success of past Mall Cares campaigns is a fantastic demonstration of the support given by the local community and the appreciation they have for the tireless dedication the charities of Barnsley provide. I have no doubt that this year our customers will once again ensure that Mall Cares is a success.” Mark Broadhead, General Manager of The Mall Barnsley, with Sue Miller, Events Fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice.

The Mall Barnsley is also now selling special heart strings, with all proceeds going towards Barnsley Hospice. Available from the Ask Me Point, it’s the simple way to for people to show their support for such a good cause in the local area.

‘Hardest job in the world being a mum,’ I once heard. ‘Yeah right,’ I thought. ‘All you have to do is iron a few clothes and cook a Sunday lunch.’ Then I became one. And suddenly my mother is nodding sagely in the background with a smug look on her face saying ‘Told you so.’ I didn’t have any brothers or sisters so had two children in quick succession so that they’d always have a playmate. No one told me that the sole aim of siblings is to try and murder each other. And if they aren’t fighting together, they are ganging up on me – evil entity from another generation. Ironing and cooking the Sunday lunch are the easy parts. The hard parts are legion: especially in the early days. The sterilizing, the pureeing, the trying to juggle children and jobs, the constant tiredness, trying to function on 3 minutes sleep - I never seemed to have the time to shave both legs in one sitting! I wanted to be the perfect mother – I read all the textbooks. I planned to trill like Doris Day in the kitchen whilst baking apple pies, always smiling, always clad in a gingham apron. I would never shout, never say the words ‘shut up’, always feed my children vegetables and fresh fish and knit socks. Now flick forward a decade to find that my voice is hoarse from hollering, I am just pouring water on 2 Pot Noodles whilst trying to open a bottle of gin with my teeth. The textbooks are long gone. They were propping up a table

But have I really done so bad a job considering I’ve wandered so far away from my gingham apron? The house is always warm, the kids are well fed, their clothes get ironed, their shoes get polished and, though I’m always in the wrong (allegedly) I haven’t found any empty glue canisters under their beds yet. They’ve got nice manners, a sense of humour and do their homework without me having to nag. Occasionally a vegetable passes their lips and sometimes a miracle occurs and I find their dirty clothes inside the wash basket. And, when they’re upset, it’s me they still turn to for a hug. I always took it for granted when I was a kid that our food cupboards were so well stocked, my bed linen fresh, the house clean and tidy – I never realized the effort needed to make it all look so easy. Sadly a lot of my friends don’t have their mother’s around anymore and would give anything to turn back the clock and tell them how much they love and appreciate them. So, if like me you are lucky enough to still have yours around, this Mother’s Day however much she may drive you insane - give your old mum a big hug and a lovely card with some nice words in it. And then make her day by letting her into the secret that she got – at least - some things right!

Endometriosis Awareness Week is 8th - 14th March

Endometriosis is the second most common gynaecological condition. We estimate that 2 million women have endometriosis in the UK. When you consider that diabetes affects 2.6 million people it?s shocking to think how awareness of endometriosis is dwarfed in comparison. Endometriosis deserves a higher level of awareness. Without it, women are putting up with severe symptoms, believing them to be “normal, they are not getting the understanding they deserve from colleagues, employers, even friends and family, because not enough people know what endometriosis is and the impact it can have on sufferers.

Endometriosis UK produces fact sheets on the treatments available as well as transcripts of talks given at our Workshops. The helpline number is 0808 808 2227 and is run by women with endometriosis also

visit www.endometriosis-uk.org Endometriosis Awareness Week is 8th-14th March 2010 with many other events throughout the year.

Endometriosis is the name given to the condition where cells like the ones in the lining of the womb are found elsewhere in the body. It is not an infection. It is not contagious. It is not cancer and you cannot catch it. It is most commonly found inside the pelvis, around the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, on the outside of the womb or the ligaments. There is no proven cause for endometriosis. There are several theories as to what can cause the condition. However, each theory does not fully explain how endometriosis appears and the actual cause remains unknown. The classic symptoms of endometriosis are: Painful periods, Painful sex and Infertility. However they do not stop there they can include Leg Pain, Back Pain, Pain when passing Urine, Symptoms mistaken for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Lethargy, Nausea and Depression. The majority of women with the condition will experience some of these symptoms. Some women with Endometriosis will have no symptoms at all. Blue Lights Photography teamed up with Endometriosis-UK to plan a photo shoot with 11 girls to raise the awareness of this disease. The photo shoot was a huge success and out of the 11 girls, everyone either had or knew someone who was suffering with the condition. Even the photographer has endometriosis.

Endometriosis Awareness Week is such an important time for us. Endometriosis deserves a higher level of awareness. Without it, women are putting up with severe symptoms, believing them to be ‘normal’, they are not getting the understanding they deserve from colleagues, employers, even friends and family, because not enough people know what endometriosis is and the impact it can have on sufferers. So, please join us on the 8th March in a week dedicated to telling everyone and anyone about endometriosis!

Healthwise give their Monthly Tips on Healthy Living Reduce the Risk - Smoking - The Facts Smoking is the single biggest cause of cancer in the world and accounts for one in four cancer deaths. In the UK, smoking kills five times as more people than road accidents, overdoses, murder, suicide and HIV all put together. (Cancer Research UK). Smoking increases the risk of the following cancers: Lung cancer, Mouth cancer, Voice box, Liver and Kidney. There is also evidence to show that smoking can increase the risk of breast cancer.

Beans, pulses can only count towards one portion a day. This is because they are high in fibre but don’t contain the same balance of nutrients as other fruit and vegetables. Fruit juice can also only count towards one portion a day. This is because they are high in nutrients but low in fibre. And extracting the juice releases sugars which are bad for your teeth. Mushrooms can also count towards your portions. But try not to fry them in lots of oil as they will readily soak it up. www.5aday.nhs.uk has a full list of portion sizes for different fruit and vegetables.

Five easy tips for Five-a-Day

Giving Up makes a difference Before you give up make sure you know why you want to stop. Ask yourself: Why do I smoke? Why do I want to stop smoking? Is this the right time to stop smoking? When am I most likely to give in to cravings? What can I do to overcome these cravings? Who can support me whilst I’m giving up? How can I reward myself for giving up? When would be a good quit date?

A glass of pure unsweetened fruit juice is a quick and easy portion, but it can only count for one of your daily five. When you feel like a snack, go for fresh or dried fruit instead of crisps or chocolate. Or try vegetable sticks with a low-fat dip. Liven up the food you already eat with crunch or colour ” put tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber in sandwiches, berries and bananas in yogurt and cereal, or vegetables in pasta, stir-fries and soups. Make fruit and vegetables fun for children. Cut them into funky shapes, make a smiley face with fruit pieces, and get the kids involved when you’re cooking. Keep your kitchen well stocked with fresh, frozen and tinned fruit and vegetables. Remember that going for those in season is cheaper when buying fresh.

Support yourself

Sun

We know quitting smoking can be very difficult free services and treatments are available to help and these have been shown to improve the chances of quitting successfully. Smokers are four times more likely to quit successfully if they get professional support than if they try to go “cold-turkey”.To find out more about these services and get support with giving up smoking, call the NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 022 4 332 or Visit www.givingupsmoking.co.uk

Alcohol - The Facts Alcohol causes cancer. The more you cut down on alcohol the more you reduce you risk of cancer Drinking alcohol can increase you risk of: Mouth cancer, Pharyngeal cancer, Oesophageal cancer, Laryngeal cancer, Breast cancer, Bowel cancer, Liver cancer

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and the number of people who develop it is increasing. Sunburn can greatly increase the risk of skin cancer. Don’t let yourself be caught out - use shade, clothing and SPF30+ sunscreen to protect yourself. Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm Always use sun cream at least factor 30 or higher. Wear a protective hat and sunglasses Sun beds carry a huge risk, so for a ‘safe’ tan use fake tan

Complementary Therapies - Are you Confused? Have you ever thought about trying a complementary therapy but don’t really know anything about them? Or have you tried one but would like to know about a different therapy? There are lots of books about therapy and if you have access to the internet there is plenty of information to be found, but there is nothing like experiencing a therapy at first hand to really find out if it would be of benefit to you. In my job as a therapist I am often asked for advice about which treatment to choose. Well there are lots of things to consider. If you have never had a treatment before do you mind removing your clothing for a massage or would you prefer something a little less threatening where you can remain fully clothed? Indian Head Massage can be done while you are fully dressed but it is a lot more soothing if the therapist can use oils on your skin. Reflexology to the feet or hands may be an option as the therapist usually only touches those areas so for someone unused to treatments it is a good choice. Lots of people use ticklish feet as an excuse not to have reflexology but I can assure you that reflexology is not ticklish To help you here is a brief overview of some of the more popular treatments available.

Massage: Massage is manipulation of the soft tissues of the body usually the muscles. It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole or part of the body. It is soothing and therefore great if you are suffering any effects of stress. It can stimulate the systems of the body, helping circulation, digestion and waste removal. Muscles are invigorated and relaxed helping to prevent spasm and stiffness.

There are several different types of massage: Swedish: a good general body massage that is the basis for most other massage techniques. Aromatherapy: massage is combined with the use of essential oils designed to benefit individual needs. Sports Massage: A massage designed for the treatment and prevention of sporting injuries. It can be used as part of a training programme to prevent injury, can help in the treatment of and injury and can be part of the warm up and wind down for sporting events. Indian Head Massage : This is massage to the upper back, neck, shoulders scalp and face. It is usually done with the client seated rather than lying. This can be done through light clothing and is ideal and very effective when massage is offered in the work setting. Alternatively it can be applied directly to the skin using oils. Oils may also be applied to the scalp but I always give this as an option as it is not the best look if you are going somewhere else after the treatment. Reflexology: Reflexologists use a series of alternating pressure techniques to specific reflex areas on the feet with the intention of invoking a specific response in other parts of the body. It can help to reduce stress and is deeply relaxing. It can improve circulation and cleanses the body. It balances the whole body and revitalizes energy. Reflexology can be very effective in treating a wide range of conditions alongside conventional medical treatments and can help with preventive health care. You just need to remove shoes and socks for this treatment. Reiki: A very gentle treatment that can have amazing effects. There is no need to undress you just lie comfortably for the duration of the treatment. You may or may not feel the therapist’s hands. The therapist channels universal energy into the client to aid relaxation and promote the body’s own healing process. Hopi ear Candling: This is a gentle treatment to the ear. The candle, a hollow tube made of linen soaked in bee’s wax and honey, is placed over the opening to the ear canal. The effect is gently warming and very pleasant. This treatment can help a variety of problems such as a build up of earwax, hay fever and sinus problems.

__EYE_March_Complete.indd 13

When choosing a therapy we often go on the recommendation of a friend, but do remember that what your friend really enjoys might not be your favourite treatment. You have to start somewhere so try them out. You might even have different experiences of the same therapy depending on the therapist. You should not always make a decision about a treatment after your first try. Sometimes a bit of nervousness about what is going to happen can affect how deeply you allow yourself to relax so try it regularly for a few weeks and monitor how you feel. You might also find that a few weeks of regular treatment seems to have a cumulative effect helping you to feel more relaxed and cope better for a longer period. Once you are feeling the effects it is up to you how often you go for treatment some people like to top up once a month. Don’t be frightened to tell your therapist how you feel about the treatment. If there is part of it that you don’t like but you really enjoy another your therapist should be able to tailor the treatment to your preference. Tell them if you would like them to use more pressure or if they are using too much pressure. The therapist should be aiming to give a good, effective treatment but you should feel comfortable. Remember your therapist is not a doctor and will not be able to diagnose any aches, pains or symptoms you have. If you are concerned about anything you should always visit your GP. If you have any medical condition you should inform your therapist and it is always a good idea to inform your GP if you are having complementary therapies. There are other types of treatment available but space prevents me from including them here. If you are interested a therapist will always welcome an enquiry. I hope what I have included here makes you feel that you would like to try a new therapy or that you would like to go back to having treatments if you have got out of the habit. It is coming up to Mothers Day and Easter, and Father’s Day is just round the corner, why not give someone a treat? Maria Nortcliffe M.A.R M.I.C.H.T

GET YOU 1ST SIENNA X SPRAY TAN FOR £10 WITH THIS VOUCHER Now that the winter is blowing away and spring is all around us, we’re all starting to think about how we look... As the winter woollies are packed away and our pale, bare skin starts to show, nothing feels better than a fabulous golden glow making you look radiant and healthy. The perfect way to achieve this is with a TOTALLY SAFE, SUNLESS SPRAY TAN. Now we don’t have to wait for summer - we can all have a lovely year round tan without any of the risks associated with exposure to UV rays.

How fake tan started • Dihydroxyacetone, DHA was first discovered by the Germans in the late 1920’s when DHA spilled on the skin and produced a brown colour. • DHA has been listed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973, and has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years. • DHA is not absorbed through the skin into the body and it has no known toxicity.

How Sunless Tanning Works.... • The skin is made up of two main layers: the epidermis and dermis • The epidermis is also made up of layers. The outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum (or horny layer), is where self tanning occurs. • DHA reacts with amino acids on the skin and oxygen in the air causing skin to turn brown, giving the appearance of a tan. • A good example of this reaction is if you take a bite out of an apple and leave it on the side for a few hours it starts to turn brown. Fake tan works in a similar way on the skin. • Every day millions of dead skin cells are sloughed or worn away from the surface of the skin. Actually, every 35 to 45 days you have an entirely new epidermis. • That’s why the colour change produced by DHA creating the tan effect will gradually fade. A sunless tan will usually lasts about 5-7 days, although the Sienna X retail <http://sienna-x.co.uk/shopping-choice.php> range of pre and post tan care products is designed to help your customers keep theirs for longer (all products available from Sparkle & Gloss) Sienna X is loved by the media and celebrities - Sienna X tans have featured in top TV shows Strictly Come Dancing and How to Look Good Naked, and have celebrity fans including Lisa Snowdon and Rachel Stevens, not to mention regular accolades in the glossies. Sienna X spray tan solution is available in a range of shades to suit the individual’s skin tone/type. I have used tanning products over the last 10 years and Sienna X is by far the best. Robert Eaton, North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and Creative Director of the Russell Eaton salon in Barnsley and Leeds gives his consultation advice:

Escape from hair hell! What if I don’t know what I want? If your not sure, don’t worry. Just give your stylist as much information as possible - even if it’s only to tell them if you want a trim or a total restyle. They can talk to you about what would really suit you.

The consultation Always sit down with your hairdresser to talk about your hair. If neccessary, have a consultation before you book your appointment. It’s important to do this so that you can communicate exactly what you want to your stylist or technician. It can often turn out that a client doesn’t get what they expected because a proper consultation hasn’t been carried out.

Will my stylist give me an honest opinion? A good stylist will always be honest if they believe the style you’re asking for won’t suit you. We all want our clients to leave the salon happy and looking fantastic.

When visiting a salon you should dress in your usual style to give the stylist a good understanding of what will suit you.

Is there anything should take along?

Is there anything else I need to know?

I

Some clients have strong opinions about what they want done as they know their own hair better than anyone. Photos are great for getting to know what clients like and it’s really useful if you can bring in pictures that show styles you’ve previously loved and hated.

Is Make-Up Destroying Your Looks? Shockingly, make-up is most likely to contain at least one, or a combination, of these highly toxic, skin destroying chemicals; Mercury, Phthalates, Parabens, Carcinogens and even Carmine - crushed beetles! For flawless skin use Green People’s new certified organic mineral make-up. A luxurious collection of nine natural make-up essentials that are like ‘organic food for your skin,’ feeding it the purest quality blend of mineral pigments, plant extracts and natural ingredients like Beeswax and Cupuaçu Butter to nourish, protect and energise your skin. Certified organic by Ecocert, you won’t find any chemical nasties in this pure, gentle collection (below) which is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin and those prone to acne, eczema, psoriasis or rosacea.

How am I going to re-create this at home? Stylists usually prescribe the correct products and tools required to create your look at home. During you hair service, your stylist will talk you through what their using and which methods.

What should I wear?

GREENPEOPLEORGANICLIFESTYLE

Remember always to make sure you’re happy with what you and your stylist have discussed before you go off to have your hair washed or the colour started. If you’re still not sure, ask again before the work begins.

Many of us like to try out new beauty products once in a while even if we still stick to our old faithfuls in the end. ASOS have a great range of beauty products and host some of the biggest names such as Illamasqua, Korres, Urban Decay and Dainty Doll. Update your look with my five favourite finds... Justine Case by Benefit features three of Benefits key products; California Kissin lip shine, Eyecon brightening cream, Benetint lip and cheek stain and Some kind-a-gorgeous foundation faker. Perfect if you need a quick fix on the run! Make sure your lashes are as lush as Cheryl Coles with Girls Aloud by Eylure false lashes. The lady herself describes them as “cool and ultra glamorous” and at £5 they’re a beauty steal.

The trends that count now! The spring/summer 10 catwalks have shown a distinct move away from the grown up glamour and polished looks we have seen for the past two years. The key looks are either very girly and feminine or hard edged utility/military. Throw in the mix some flashy prints and we can all be happy. Modern military – also read utility. The key items are jackets, whether it is the military tailcoat with rows of buttons and epaulettes or smart multi pocket khaki. This look can be dressed up with a smart white shirt or dressed down with across body bags and heeled trainers.

Just make sure that if your hair and eyes are deep and rich, balance any pastels with a deeper colour somewhere in your outfit. Have a pout like Rhianna by using a berry lipstick this season. Darker, almost gothic berry hues are on the scene and Liparazzi provides the perfect colours to suit everybody. Try the shade A Lister for a sophisticated change. After teaming up with the Parisian Artist and Illustrator Nathalie Lété, Bourjois have created famous Parisian beauty scenes to decorate the pots of their Rose d’or blushers. With a variety of colours and scenes, your make-up bag is sure to look as pretty as a picture.

Jump in to Action With the utility trend tipped to be this seasons favourite and the jumpsuit making a come back, make sure that these gorgeous, draped, one-piece Jump-suits are flaunted on your wardrobe’s front line. Jumpsuits were an enormously popular fashion trend of the late 60s/early 1970s, and then again in the 1980s as flying suits. Each time the classic colours for jumpsuits were initially black or white, with white jumpsuits often being halter neck. As the fashion progresses so fabric prints, or two tone colours, always come into play. In the late 60s vivid Pucci colourways and jazzy op-art prints were a memorable sight. This season amid many black, navy or grey styles you will find plain bold bright colours such as this Santorini Purple jumpsuit (right). Another line in jumpsuits is satins and printed patterned fabrics, especially floral fabrics with ditsy and dotty prints. Plain Grey will also be bang on trend remininicent of the early eighties.

your mall With Mothers Day fast approaching, why not pamper yourself or your mum and pay a visit to one of the two hair salons situated in The Mall, we have Regis, on the upper mall near Wilkinsons and Cutting Crew outside The Mall on New St.

Hair color can have a dramatic effect on an otherwise plain hair style. Rich natural brown colors are ultra-hot this year. Deep tones of chocolate or red tones are a great compliment to a dark brown or black hair color. Natural colors of blonde and natural red are big as well. Strategically placed highlights, lowlights, or panels can accentuate texture and add tons of character to your style. Compliment your features and skin tone, and add an edge to your haircut with some artful hair coloring.

The Bob …Precision cut bobs are huge this year, coupled with smooth, sleek styling, a blunt fringe and heaps of shine. Your bob should be carefully crafted to accentuate your unique facial structure, or highlight a long, beautiful neck. Bob hair styles range from ear level to shoulder skimming and are best for straight or slightly wavy hair

Long and Wavy…is The Hair Style of 2010. Find a good hair stylist and listen to their ideas about styles and techniques that’ll work best on your hair, while complimenting your face. Unexpected texture and length might differ and the angles can range from soft and gently sloping to an extreme plunge Along with the layers, asymmetrical bangs are hot, and whether they’re cut blunt or heavily textured, a sloping bang adds interest and can highlight your features nicely.

Regis has two Mothers Day offers that are not to be missed, just cut out the voucher below and take it into store.

Soars Celebrate 1 Million with Charity a Dinner Established in 2003, the Blue Square Group based in Barnsley, were determined to establish themselves for the highest level of Customer Care. That determination has led to achieving their One Millionth Customer Asked what satisfaction this gave, Steve Soar (left) of Blue Square said “We have always been Customer focused and its a credit to my Team that we are achieving great customer satisfaction. We rely a great deal on word of mouth and we have worked hard to supply the right quality products with genuine care and support. We are not perfect but we say what we mean and mean what we say, so our promises are kept. Every Business faces challenges but we have always stayed calm and set out to manage Market needs to the best of our ability. We see 2010 as a significant Year to build on our success” Its encouraging in a difficult economic climate to hear good news and Steve captures the key to success when he recommends responding to Customer needs. He was also quick to realise the need to develop a diverse Business, not relying on one source of revenue. Following the Companies formation in Digital Technology Services,Soars entered the Markets of Digital printing and the manufacture and supply of Exhibition Stands and Accessories that were able to meet the demands of portable, modular and outdoor needs. Online Display Store is now able to serve the needs of Business in the UK and the EU. “Company Branding and Image has never been more important” adds Steve, “Current Surveys suggest that 71% of Businesses in Yorkshire either cut back or stopped promoting themselves in 2009, whilst being determined in 2010 not to fall behind further. We help to make sure that messages make clear the benefits of a Companies Products or Services and glorious Colour cetainly helps! We are telling people that it is now time to make an Exhibition of themselves to increase revenues and i am pleased to say they are agreeing with us” Such a success deserves a Celebration and Steve agrees. In character, Soars have found their unique balance. In order to thank staff, but at the same time benefit the Community, the intention is to organise a Charity Dinner in Barnsley in Mid April. Celebrity Guests will attend from TV and Sport and proceeds will go to supporting a local service that cares for Barnsley people. Kennedy the Mindreader, the new Star of TV and Radio will dazzle the audience with his skills! More details are available soon and tickets are expected to be in great demand.

Utility Company offers Competitive Finance Deals Barnsley based utility company, Aquaforce, has just launched competitive finance deals for its customers to help them to spread the cost of property maintenance for 2010. They recognise that many people may be struggling with money this time of year and coupled with the snow and bitter weather that we have experience over recent weeks, broken down boilers and burst and frozen water pipes are house maintenance costs that they probably least want to spend their money on. Partnering with Barclay Personal finance, Aquaforce hope that Yorkshire based customers will find the thirty six month deal attractive which will allow them to have a new high energy efficient boiler installed, replacement of any burst or frozen water pipes and other costly maintenance service, and defer the payment for ten months. Aquaforce, which has industry accreditations and have been operating for almost a decade with a team of dedicated plumbers and technicians to deal with call out emergencies, are excited about this new opportunity for customers, which they believe adds to their service portfolio. Craig Wood, (Near Right) Managing Director of Aquaforce added “Customers often get scared when their boiler brakes down and they panic with how they are going to pay for it. We hope that this finance deal backed by Barclays, will also work hand in hand with the national government scrappage scheme that is in place for households to replace their old inefficient boilers. We will help new and existing customers to have a high energy efficient boiler installed, with a flexible finance to suit them”. Aquaforce are utility experts covering plumbing, heating, gas and electrical solutions for both private and commercial customers.

Eye on Entertainment M O V I E SPECIAL

The Wolfman Director: Joe Johnston

00

Avitar James Cameron Remember in the 90’s the first time you saw the Policeman Terminator in T2 and were amazed.....? Well if like me you were - prepare to be amazed again! I was more than skeptical about James Cameron’s latest opus. I was not going to go to see this film because (as Flavor Flav once said) I should not believe the hype.... but I eventually went and I’m sorry to say that Flav, not only were you wrong about that Big Clock....this time the Hype was TRUE! It took me ages to actually understand what was happening though because I was not following the story.........Instead I was sat (looking like Harry Hill) with giant 3D glasses on gawping at the brilliant 3D effects. OK the story isnt original and I saw traces of Total Recall, Last of The Mohicans and even Ferngully the Last Rain Forest in the storyline but all in all the film was superb. A Visual materpiece.

Inspired by the classic Universal Lon Chaney film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Lawrence Talbot’s (played by Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro) childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to his father (Anthony Hopkins) to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate. As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself...one he never imagined existed.

I will say It is pointless waiting and watching this film on DVD - anyone who does will not understand what all the fuss was about. The film DEMANDS to be watched (Harry Hill’d Up) on the big screen. I for one have never seen a buzz like the one this film created as people left the theatre. A must see movie!!!! GM HHHHH

The Film looks fantastic. All fog and eerieness which was great as the night I went to see it we were having a right old “pea souper” which made the atmosphree all the more compelling. For the first 2 thirds I was hooked. The slayings were brutal and the feel of the film was one of the old horror classics I used to love but with a modern brutal edge. Towards the final third however, when I should have been getting excited, I was beginning to get bored........especially with Anthony Hopkins and his character who - everytime he turned up - I was beginning to think was spoiling the movie. In truth I was never a big fan of The Lon Chaney version of “The Wolfman” I was more into the 1961 Hammer Classic “The Curse of The Werewolf” starring Oliver Reed. Comedy Werewolf mask and furry-hand gloves aside the story goes deeper into the despair of Reed as the beast - slaying folk in a sleepy Spanish town only to wake the next day full of remorse and regret (Even the great American Werewolf in London, which is probably my all time Werewolf film, went into this more) . I only wished there had been more of that in “The Wolfman” in oppose to the battle between father and son, although all in all - the film retells the story well enough. For me though, they should have remade “The Curse of The Werewolf” instead....but without the furry hand-gloves. GM HHH

44 Eye on Sport “Super” Super League

Engage Super League XV is proving to be a ratings winner after recording some impressive viewing figures for a number of fixtures in the opening rounds from teams in the Yorkshire region.

The attendance at Castleford Tigers of 7,569 for their match against Warrington last Saturday was 35 per cent higher than the same fixture a year earlier while the biggest year-on-year increase was recorded just down the road at Hearwell Stadium where Wakefield Trinity Wildcats cemented their place at the top of the Engage Super League table with a victory over Leeds Rhinos in front of 9,783 people, a 52 per cent increase on the crowd for the same match in 2009. Supporters seem to be turning out in force for Engage Super League XV. A total of 78,090 people – an all-time high for the competition – turned out to see the seven opening round fixtures. That trend continued last month when three Round Two fixtures attracted significantly higher crowds than the corresponding matches in 2009.

Barnsley has always been a predominantly a footballing town but with Hoyland Dearne Valley and Dodworth having good amateur Rugby League sides there are also several proffessional clubs in the area to choose from should people want to go and see games. Wakefield, Featherstone, Dewsbury, Castleford and Sheffield all have strong RL teams only a short distance away.

with a poor run of form throughout February.

Losses to Middlesbrough, Plymouth and Scunthorpe meant The Tykes dropped valuable points and also lost their game in hand advantage on others above them. Manager Mark Robins said as the month ended “It’s been a difficult few weeks but we need to regroup. As any manager will tell you in this league any team can beat anyone. We cannot dwell on the past too much but focus on the next match. Our first objective will be to get four or five wins under our belt and then look to kick on for the rest of the season”.

Free Swimming Lessons For Barnsley Families!!!! Families in the Barnsley area now have even more reason to learn to swim, as local leisure operator BPL, in conjunction with Barnsley Council, is offering free swimming lessons. A six week programme of free swimming lessons is available for families where a minimum of two members of that family cannot swim and are over 11 years of age. These free swimming sessions are available at five BPL venues including - Dearneside Leisure Centre, Hoyland Leisure Centre, Metrodome Leisure Complex, Royston Leisure Centre and Wombwell Swimming Pool Eddie Lim, BPL’s swimming development officer, explains: “The initiative has been introduced to encourage families to become fitter, healthier and more active, as well as learning a valuable life skill. Swimming is something that should be enjoyed by all the family, so whether it’s dad, mum, brother, sister or grandma who wants to learn, as long as there are two family members who cannot swim, they can learn together - for free!” When the course of six free lessons have been completed, the families that take part can save money when they book further swimming lessons with BPL, making sure they can continue learning and having fun in the water. Cllr Roy Miller, Barnsley Council spokesperson for Customer and Neighbourhood Services, said: “This is a great chance for families to have fun, get healthy and learn a skill that can potentially save their lives. What’s more, it won’t cost them a thing. I’ll be recommending this programme to everyone I know, and I hope that others will do the same.” BPL has long been recognised for being one of the best swim schools in the region and achieved a distinction rating when it was awarded the prestigious STAmark – making it the first organisation in the region to do so. Barnsley Premier Leisure manages and operates a diverse portfolio of facilities in Barnsley from small community recreation centres and civic halls to large regional facilities such as the Metrodome Leisure Complex.

To find out more, contact Eddie Lim on 01226 738 661 or email: edward.lim@bpl.org.uk., or visit the BPL website at www.bpl.org.uk

Barnsley Animal Rescue Barnsley Animal Rescue is a Yorkshire based registered Charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of domestic animals across the region. In 2009 we re-homed 112 dogs, 104 cats and 120 rabbit’s and guinea pigs as well as the many wildlife cases such as birds, ducks and hedgehogs. This makes 360 animals given a second chance during 2009, which we could not have done without the support and donations from you – Thank you!

A Pint? Just get an eyeful… Breathe out girls and chuck the Ryvita! It’s now a proven scientific fact that men love a curvier figure. According to research carried out this week (ie a bunch of white coats telling us what we already know) looking at a healthy, hourglass figure gives men the same high as large quantities of alcohol (which, looking back, could explain a lot on recent night nights out) The gorgeous porcelain-skinned Christina Hendricks is becoming increasingly famous for her size 16 Jessica Rabbit-esque figure and with Italian designer Mark Fast sending size 14 to 16 models down the runway last week, maybe we’re finally beginning to hammer the final nail in the (size zero) skinny coffin.

We are looking forward to the year ahead and hope to re-home even more animals in 2010. We are currently selling raffle Tickets for our Easter raffle to generate much needed funds. Prizes include £100 cash, food hampers, beauty vouchers, football tickets and many more. Tickets are 50p each or a book of five for £2.00, you can purchase your raffle tickets at any of our charity shops in Hoyland Town Centre, Hoyland Common, Wombwell, Goldthorpe and Cudworth or from our kennels. The draw will take place at Kendray primary school on Friday 26th March. All winners will be notified and posted on the website.

Apparently ‘the caucasian, western female has been brainwashed into thinking men like skinny, wasted, fragile looking girls… Curviness is key, it’s worth its reproductive weight in gold. An hourglass figure screams health, fertility, strength and good old fashioned glamour. Marilyn Monroe isn’t the world’s most famous sex symbol for nothing’.

We are always desperate for new furniture, clothes, bric-a-brac and VOLUNTEERS. If you can spare a few hours to help out in any of our five shops please call in and we will be happy to arrange something to suit you. Alternatively if you have any unwanted items in pre-loved condition, please drop them off at any of our shops. In some cases collection can be arranged.

This is not to say that slimmer girls aren’t attractive, far from it (nothing makes makes my blood boil more than headlines that assume all ‘real women’ are a size 14 or over) but it seems actual dress size is irrelevant, its all about hip-to-waist ratio, which basically means if you go in and out in all the right places you’re already making pulses race without trying!

It is our 15th year this year and we will be holding lots of fundraising events throughout 2010 so look out for the posters and adverts in our charity shops, on our website and in future editions of the Barnsley Eye.

Nobody is saying ditch the gym and live on chip butties and Crème Eggs for the rest of your life (which I personally, could quite easily do) but maybe its time we gave ourselves a break and stopped striving for the ‘celebrity’ ideal. In my experience, the only people fascinated with the super-skinnies are other women. You ask any guy whether they’d choose Posh (and her diet of frozen peas and endless hours on the treadmill) or the voluptuous, finger-licking foodie Nigella and I bet I know which they’d go for.

Just remember – before you buy a new addition to the family take a look at our animals up for adoption on our website (below). Each one of them is there through no fault of their own and each one looking for a new forever home.

As one guy I spoke to put it: “Women should be soft, with a bum, boobs and a waist. If I wanted to cuddle up to a six-pack and have arms like a labourer wrapped rarnd me I’d jump into bed wi mi mate” and that said, I’d take a tarn lad’s view over any white coat’s!
