Kayak Challenge Dear Barnsley Eye, Myself and a group of friends are kayaking from Liverpool to Goole on the 12th March (hoping to finish on red nose day on the 18th of March). There are approximately 10 of us including myself, Roy Williams, Louise Williams, David Firth, Ben Brotherton, Christopher Heptinstall, Steven Riddiough, Claire Heptinstall and Nigel Lofts. The trip is just over 150 miles meaning we will have to achieve around 21 miles a day passing through towns such as Wigan, Blackburn, Chorley, Bradford, Leeds and Castleford. There are over 87 locks to portage around. We will also be rough camping on towpaths as and when dusk falls and also have no support driver so we’ll be carrying all our own food and equipment. The best part is most of us are novice paddlers. 3 of us in home made kayaks too and the rest in hired equipment from Robinhood Watersports. Thankfully Manvers Waterfront Boat club have offered us free training. We have a facebook page under Red Nose Day Coast To Coast Kayak Challenge 2011 that has a link to our official comic relief giving page and is also being kept up to date with our progress !! We also have some ‘Sponsor Stations‘ where people can donate money on the spot or folk can fill out our sponsor forms located at The Manx Arms on Sheffield Road in Barnsley and also The Green Dragon and the Bridge Inn both of which are in Thurgoland.

06 Eye on Local News McMillan Cancer Support is 100 Years Old A CHARITY which provides support to people living with cancer will celebrate its 100th birthday this year. Macmillan Cancer Support was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan (right) who watched his father die of cancer. His pain and suffering moved Douglas so much that he founded the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer. The aim was to provide advice and information to all people with cancer, homes for patients at low or no cost and for voluntary nurses to attend to patients in their own homes. One hundred years later and his legacy lives on through the charity which helps individuals and families in Barnsley every day with practical, medical, emotional and financial support. To mark 100 years of support and campaigning, Macmillan Cancer Support is planning a year of fund-raising activities across the country with a target of £600,000 in South Yorkshire, including Barnsley. Amy Jukes, fund-raising manager for Barnsley, said: “This year is an extremely important and exciting year for Macmillan. Through the centenary celebrations we want to raise awareness in Barnsley about the work we are doing. The service has grown in response to people’s needs. Now people are starting to get the information they need. Our aim for next year is to set up a dedicated fundraising support group in the town as well as hitting the fund-raising target. There are a whole range of events and ways that people can get involved and help us to celebrate the charity’s 100th year.” As well as patients, Macmillan helps carers, families and communities by guiding people through the system and supporting them every step of the way. Medical help is only one aspect of Macmillan’s work as the charity provides small financial grants to help with the extra heating bills and travel costs. In Barnsley, there are 28 Macmillan health professionals, plus 4 Welfare Rights Advisors who provide free, impartial advice about benefit entitlements. At Birdwell Clinic Macmillan have funded a large palliative care team which includes community nurses, a dietician, a physio, occupational and speech language therapist. The East Midlands area recently acquired its own Macmillan information bus which will increase the coverage in Barnsley. Amy added: “We are also a force for change, we listen to people affected by cancer and work together to improve cancer care. If you would like to hear more about Macmillan’s local plans for the centenary, or think you can help fundraise or volunteer, please contact Amy Jukes on 01246 810301 or email ajukes@macmillan.org.uk
New Directors for Chamber of Commerce Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has welcomed two new directors onto its board in the shape of Mark Broxholme (right) and Derek Carpenter (below right). Both Mark and Derek join the board after previously serving as members of the Chamber’s Representation Council. Mark is Operations Manager at Tata Steel Speciality with responsibility for Operations on the Tata Steels Sites in Rotherham and Sheffield. Mark has 30 years of business experience, the majority in the manufacturing sector and mostly in South Yorkshire, although he has also worked in the Midlands, London and Holland during his career.Mark said: “I am looking forward to playing a part in developing the Chamber to provide real value and help to the businesses of Barnsley and Rotherham. “The formation of the Local Enterprise Partnerships provides a real opportunity to position the Chambers of Commerce as the link for local business to have a strong coordinated voice and make a difference. This opportunity should not be missed and I look forward to working with the other board members to establish this link.” Derek has been successful in establishing leading brands in Europe as Managing Director of UK-based, American-owned companies. In recent years he has concentrated on supporting and developing business in South Yorkshire - he was formerly Secretary for South Yorkshire Institute of Directors and SME Ambassador for Yorkshire and the North East on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Derek said: “More than ever, I believe that Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and local business are stronger together and that, in spite of the clear challenges that 2011 will bring, a common purpose of shared skills and initiative will develop and protect local interests.” Andrew Denniff, the Chamber’s Executive Director, said: “We welcome both Mark and Derek onto the board and trust that their contribution and enthusiasm will enhanced the work of the Chamber and will provide the organisation with a broader range of experience and expertise at a strategic level.

Escapade gives Mayor’s Charities a boost The Mayor’s charities have received a boost of £1,881 from Barnsley nightclub Escapade following a presentation in the Mayor’s Parlour. The money was raised in December when Escapade hosted and sold tickets for the council’s Christmas party. Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Margaret Sheard, said: “It gives me great pleasure to receive this cheque and I’m glad that the money was raised in such an enjoyable way!” Alex Pell and Emma Marlow from Escapade nightclub presented The Mayor with a cheque for her charities. (Pictured Below).
Yours, Insincerely… Having only announced her new pregnancy only a few weeks ago Amanda Holden’s baby son was stillborn, leaving her and her husband devastated. The biggest downside of fame is that when tragedy strikes, your news is plastered over every front page so everybody knows what’s happened and there’s no escaping it. Anyone who has previously read my column, will know of my disdain for ‘social networking’. On the public, ever self-indulgent forum of Twitter, posts are visible to everybody, not just the intended recipient. It’s the kind of goldfish-bowl exposure that celebrities thrive on. What’s the point of sending a heartfelt card or a handwritten note of condolence if no-one else is going to see it? Nothing says ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ more than 20 words splashed on someone’s page – but at least it will only take 3 minutes before you can get back to watching yourself on tv and the whole world will be able to read what a wonderful humanitarian you are beneath that glittering cloak of fame. In my opinion 140 characters splashed on someone’s ‘page’ hardly seems the proper medium to express difficult and heartfelt messages of sympathy (and its my guess that the last thing on Amanda Holden’s mind right now is checking her Twitter account).“Absolutely devastated for Amanda and Chris. Thinking of them and sending our prayers at this very sad time” wrote Emma Bunton (only to chirpily announce on air later that day, that she was expecting a baby boy herself). Myleene Klass, (who, just in case there was anyone left on earth who had been spared the pics of her eternally-smug kite/baby bump, is also pregnant) chimed in: “My sweetheart. I’m so very sorry. Please God, watch over your family and your little angel in heaven. X” Insincere AND sickly? Nothing new there then.“Sending all my love and prayers to Amanda Holden and Chris” wrote ‘comedian’ (PFFFFT!) and actor James Corden. Note their use of the word ‘prayers’. Call me cynical but I dare say the closest James Corden has ever got to praying for anything, would be for the kebab shop to still be open after last orders. Add to the mix Lorraine Kelly, Sarah Parrish, Kelly Hoppen, Richard Madeley, Davina McCall, Alexandra Burke, Piers Morgan and no doubt, a shocked and distressed partridge in a pear tree. There’s something distasteful about condolences played out in the cyber-space hall of mirrors that is Twitter, it’s narcissistic, trite and good old-fashioned showing off.
T.I.E.R Care Ltd offers day opportunities (day care) for older people and peolpe with disabilities within the Barnsley area. T.I.E.R Care Ltd was founded by three local ladies all of which have worked within the care sector for many years. the reason for them opening T.I.E.R care was due to the local authority run day centres closing and the impact this was having on service users across the barnsley area. T.I.E.R aims to offers what it stands for, a place where Training can be delivered, a place where Independence is promoted, somewhere where Enablement is second nature and most of all it is a Relaxing environment. T.I.E.R is not your standard day care facility, they offer much more, call in and have a look. TIER IS SITUATED AT JOSEPH EXLEY HOUSE, DEAN STREET, BARNSLEY S70 6EX Telephone them on: 01226 771044
While you can understand a fan never likely to meet Amanda Holden, sending her a kind message, these increasingly popular celebrity Tweets say more about the people who send them than the people they are intended for. Usually sent for their own self-promotion, these ‘stars’ lost any sense of perspective or decorum a long time ago. What their sympathy Tweets show is that they need an audience to see and acknowledge their ‘grief’ - “LOOK AT US!” is the subtext of their superficial public out-pourings. “Look how much we care! Aren’t we so NICE??!!” It’s a cheap way of staying in the public eye and reminding us all they still exist. Amanda Holden must have been greatly comforted by the fact that James Corden sandwiched (being the appropriate word) his sympathy to her between a joke about ‘You’ve been Framed’ and his commentary on a Hammers match. While Amanda Holden and her family (the people who are genuinely affected by this) have disappeared from public view - the celebrity Tweeters continue to shine their unforgiving light over her loss, they make it glaringly obvious their only aim is to put the spotlight on themselves.

Barnsley Law Society Dinner This year it was decided that The Barnsley Law Society would support a local charity. The Charity chosen was “Little Hearts Matter” which is a charity that was supported by Dr and Mrs Rhoden of Barnsley General Hospital who sadly died in an tragic accident whilst on holiday. The event was held at Ardsley House Hotel on Friday 28th January. A raffle was held in which many people kindly donated prizes. Little Hearts Matter offers support and information, and raises awareness of those affected when a child has only half a heart, due to conditions such as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Pulmonary Atresia, Tricuspid Atresia or Double Inlet Ventricle. The Charity was originally set up in 1994 at the request of parents of children who had a life threatening diagnosis of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Known initially as Left Heart Matters, a volunteer team attempted to offer support to families whose children were sent to the only centre treating this complex condition in the UK, Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Parents felt very isolated by their children’s disease, the experimental nature of the surgery, the distances that they had to travel for treatment and the huge mortality rate that was the risk of treatment. Gradually, over the following two years, the charity grew, applying for charitable status in 1996. Other cardiac centres throughout the UK began to offer treatment and the charity’s services expanded to meet the needs of a growing membership. The services included parent-to-parent telephone support, hospital visiting and yearly information Open Days.

10 Eye on Hair Regional Educator for Paul Mitchell, Barnsley’s own colour specialist Zena Claire shares her knowledge of the latest key trends in hair & the beauty industry with the Eye.
HOT spring looks:
For gorgeous, flowing locks Long hair is particularly hard to that never go out of fashion. keep nourished so it is important Long hair this spring is about layers and a shape that creates tumbling, beautiful curlz and waves. The key to having and keeping long hair is to visit the salon regularly, this sometimes can be a scary experience for some... some of my guests have had bad experience’s in their past relationships with “Hairdressers”, this is down to a few factors – I would always advice when seeking out a new hair designer, ensure you are always offered a no charge, no obligation consultation and should you require colour test. This is your chance to get the message over to the person who is about to cut or trim your luscious locks! This is the start of your long term relationship with your hair designer, and your chance to walk away!!
to give it a well balanced dietcarbohydrates provide flexibility, proteins provide strength. This is important to keep the length of the hair and prevent breakage and split ends. We choose to work & play with Paul Mitchell Luxury hair care, we have a vast range of cleanse & condition range to suit long hair guests ... supermarket systems just don t pack the same punch! When you found a hair designer, that first of all listen & then you then need to schedule your appointments and stick to their advice – regular trims every 6 weeks or maintained at home with the correct take home kit Follow this advice for long, healthy & glossy hair........

Winter Hair Care Solutions… During the winter your hair is exposed to damaging conditions, such as harsh , biting winds and drying effects from low temperatures and central heating. Central heating draws moisture from the hair and scalp which can cause static. Here are a few tips from the team at Russell Eaton to keep your hair radiant and healthy this winter. Deep Moisture…Invest in an intense shampoo and conditioner to combat dryness caused by cold. Why not try Bain Satin Nutri-Thermique shampoo followed by Masque Nutri Thermique both by Kerastase L’Oreal. They are designed to lock in moisture and nourishment, the result being hair that feels softer and is easier to manage. These two products will also form a protective layer around the hair to prevent dryness. Cut out the frzz….. Keep your hair healthy by having regular trims. Having a regular haircut will keep your hair healthier and thicker throughout the winter months. Split ends can leave your hair exposed to the elements and make the hair damaged and frizzy. Depending on hair length, a regular cut every 6-8 weeks will maintain and promote healthy hair. Treat yourself and your hair…. Why not give your hair and scalp a boost between visits.
Throughout the winter hair can appear limp and dull so its worth investing in one of our tailor made in salon treatments. Call the salon and ask about our Kerastase Ritual Collection. This is a service for your hair and scalp. First we will diagnose and determine the right product for your hair type and scalp, and then we will expertly apply the unique ritual to your hair whilst giving your scalp an invigorating massage. Whether you are in a rush, or have time to indulge you can choose from either an instant or intense Ritual. Time to shine…If you fell like your hair is limp and dull but don’t want the commitment of a permanent colour then why not try a shade from our glossing service-an ammonia- free colour service to enhance your natural colour and illuminate with a shimmering effect. Choose from colours that last from as little as 10 shampoos up to 8 weeks. The result is high gloss shine whilst leaving the hair healthy and shiny. Perfect for these dreary months. If you want anymore information on the services and products please call into one of our salons and our friendly team will be happy to help.

12 Eye on Health Did you know? Ovarian Cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women in the UK. There are around 6,800 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year. Around 4,370 women die from ovarian cancer every year (Cancer Research 2011). There is presently no national screening programme for Ovarian Cancer. Cervical screening tests known as smear tests will NOT help to detect ovarian cancer. Most cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in women who have gone through the menopause, but younger women can also be affected.

Feeling very tired Back pain These symptoms should be discussed with your doctor if they are FREQUENT – they happen on most days, PERSISTENT – they do not go away, NEW – they are not normal for you and may have started within the last 12 months. These symptoms may be signs of other common conditions but should always be checked out. Tell your doctor if two or more relatives in your close family have had ovarian or breast cancer.
INVESTIGATIONS Ultrasound scan test– this gives a picture of your ovaries. This is done in your hospital-scanning department. A blood test called CA 125. The level of this blood test may be higher in women with ovarian cancer however levels of this blood test can be raised for other non-cancerous conditions. Eye on Fitness13 SHOULDERING THE LOAD
by Mark Elliott (BPL Fitness Instructor)
This This month I want to talk about caring for your shoulders, and exercises which will strengthen them. If you are in any doubt it is always best to ask a gym instructor for advice. Fully qualified instructors are on hand at every one of BPL’s fitness suites and they are always happy to help. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint which makes it prone to injury. The muscles which help to stabilise the shoulder joint are known as “the rotator cuff”. Shoulder pain and weakness can often be attributed to problems with the rotator cuff muscles. More severe problems include frozen shoulder, adhesive capsulitis and crepitus (‘clicking’ in the shoulder joint). There are a number of exercises you can do which help to strengthen the rotator cuff and sort out any muscle imbalances, either to prevent injury, or as rehab following an injury. The instructors at your gym may be able to show you a few simple rotator cuff exercises. Although many of them can be done using dumbbells, they tend to be more effective if you use a cable pulley machine. I’d suggest doing rotator cuff exercises either at the end of a workout, or on a rest day. Just as fashions change over the years, some exercises also go out of favour as safer and more effective alternatives are found. Those of you with a few years of weight-training under your belt might be familiar with the “Lat pulldown behind the neck”, “shoulder press behind the neck” and “shrugs with a shoulder roll”. If you know what I’m talking about, read on, because you might inadvertently be doing the exercise equivalent of wearing flares and a flowery shirt! It’s time to confine these exercises to history and use these safer variants: “Shrugs” All you need to do is shrug the weights up and down. Forget the old-fashioned shoulder roll at the top of the movement and remember to keep the head up when performing this exercise.
The “Lat Pulldown”
The “Shoulder Press” is probably the best shoulder exercise there is for bringing up the deltoid muscles - but if you’re using a barbell (or a Smith machine), make sure you position the bar in front of your head. Better still, use dumbbells held in line with the shoulders (or an equivalent shoulder press machine) to more evenly work all three heads of the deltoids. Finally the “Lat Pulldown”. Another fine exercise and one of the best for adding width to the upper back, but again make sure you bring the bar in front of your head rather than behind your neck. About 24cms or so wider than the shoulders is enough. If you go too wide, you’ll limit the range of movement and won’t fully work the lats. If you’re not sure how to do these, or any other exercise, ask an instructor at your gym if they can show you. I t’s never a good idea to simply copy someone else as they may not be doing it correctly.

14 Eye on Health Unknown Reasons for Infertility to Boost Your Fertility! Here are some key points on how we can boost your fertility: 1. Understand your body better and discover what ‘fertility type’ you are; this gives you the knowledge you need to help get your body in balance and ready for conception. 2. Balance your hormones and achieve optimum health and wellbeing 3. Improve the quality of your cervical mucus (essential for successful fertilization) Infertile women come to me for different reasons. Some have amenorrhea (no periods), irregular periods, PCOS, hormone related problems, some were suffering endometriosis, PID etc which caused infertility. And some come simply with unexplained infertility, who were offered IVF but would like to try the natural way first, others are about to embark on IVF treatment for the first time, want to do the best they can to improve their chances, while those who are on their second or third attempt at IVF are looking for help to make it work.
4. Improve and thicken the endometrium to prepare for an embryo to implant
What’s the secret behind the unknown reasons for infertility? To answer this question, I’d like to ask you another question first, that is ‘are you healthy?’ A lot of women told me they have nothing wrong with them, but after my first consultation they realised they actually suffered a lot of different symptoms, only because they have suffered it for so long, they have already gotten used to it, or simply they did not realise that it’s not normal.
7. Promote egg quality, prepare for egg transfer and aid fertilization and implantation in IVF.
For example: some people feel cold all the time, even in the summer their hands and feet are always freezing, but some may feel hot all the time, they can sweat excessively most nights and so be wet through every night. Both these conditions are not normal, but all medical tests will class them normal. In chinese medicine they are classified as having an inbalance in ying yang. When the yang is deficient, people feel cold a lot, when the ying is so, people will sweat a lot.
The beauty for this treatment is you gain your total health at the same time as your dream come true. A final beauty of this treatment is that no harm will be done to your body. By Dr Li He
5. Manage gynaecological conditions such as PMS, amenorrhoea ovulation problems, endometriosis PCOS and embryo implantation issues 6. Prepare for IVF and learn what you yourself can do to help support you through the procedure
8. Help to manage and overcome your stress 9. It can help your partner as well: improve his overall health and improve his sperm quality---- count, motility and morphology.

I hope you will gain a sense of pride about being in the best possible health to conceive a child and a desire to be as healthy as possible- in both body and mind.
E SE H E R
We will examine these issues, and also look at the importance of menstrual cycle, and examine any gynaecological disorder you may have, the role your hormones play, your diet, your lifestyle, you sex life and your emotions with the aim of creating harmony in all these areas, to make sure the ‘engine’ is working that the ‘fuel’ is good and that your mind is on board.
IN CH
The main aim of Chinese Medicine is to create balance and harmony in the body. Rather than simply treat superficial symptoms, I will encourage you to look at the ‘whole you’, to find out what type of infertility you have, to address any underlying health issues you may have to eliminate disharmony, to correct any inbalance and create wellness. Often lifestyle issues, medical issues, emotional distress or trauma can lead to illness and blockages which threaten the balance and throw the system into disarray.

Chinese medicine believes that between the healthy and ill, there is gap called the subhealthy, examinations using current technology are unlikely to pick up on the people whose health lies in this category, but their balance has already been broken, the body has been ‘overdrafted’; all of this could lead to an illness such as infertility. Because the cause and the people’s reaction to the cause both vary, it will result in different types of body inbalance and disharmony, therefore there are different infertility types.

Life at 90 MPH! by Maria Nortcliffe - Cert. E.C.B.S. one drawer a day and throwing the rubbish away. Look at your activities and commitments and prioritise those you have to do and those you enjoy. Those you no longer enjoy have to be dealt with. Don’t continue doing something just because you have always done it. If you don’t enjoy it don’t do it! Or change it in some way that the routine is broken and it becomes something to look forward to. One of the big lessons in life is to learn to say ‘no’. Many of us take on more than we should because we are afraid to say no. Saying no does not have to be harsh. Without using the no-word, we can diplomatically explain that we have so much going on right now, we simply can’t take on anything else. Everyone knows how busy life can be and although they may be a little disappointed, they will respect you far more for telling them.
I am a person who is always busy. I fill my days with work and social activities. I am that busy person who always gets asked to do more because I can be relied upon to get the job done. I am living my life at 90 mph and there is no sign of a let up. At least there was no sign of a let up until I broke my leg recently. So here I am trying to carry on with things the best I can, relying on help from family and friends to get about and desperately wishing I could drive. Yes, to some extent life has slowed-at least I can’t walk as fast, much to my husbands dismay-he says he hasn’t got a gear that low. This enforced slow down did get me thinking however about the things that don’t get done when life is so fast. You know the ones I mean, all those jobs that get put off, the tidying of corners, the turning out of drawers and wardrobes and the getting rid of years of accumulated rubbish. So yes, I have promised myself that when I can get about a bit more easily I will be having a good spring clean!!!
So what do we really need to do? Sweep out the old. Get rid of clutter in your life. Change your attitude. Become more positive about what you want in your life. Get organised. Don’t waste time on things that are not important. Make time for you and use that time productively. It may be that you want to just relax in front of the TV or read a book. You might want help to relax by having a complementary therapy or learning yoga. You might want to learn a new skill or hobby. Whatever you do make time to enjoy the simple things and the beauty of the world around us.I need to take my own advice, apply it to my life and live life more slowly. I hope I can. Maria Nortcliffe MAR. MICHT Cert ECBS
But I really need to go a step further. All the constant rushing about means that I take on more and more and don’t stop any of the original activities. All I am doing is building up stress and if I don’t start to sort it out then life has a funny way of making that decision for us, ie a broken leg. It’s not just my drawers that need a clear out my whole life needs a spring clean. Things need to be simple. The most pleasurable times in life are when life has slowed enough to appreciate time with a loved one, a beautiful sunset or a panoramic view. When do we have time to simply stop and smell the roses? If the answer is rarely then we really need to take stock and simplify our lives. We need to ask ourselves ‘Is this adding joy or peace to my life/’ if the answer is no then we need to find a way to reduce its effect or get rid of it completely. If we are honest with ourselves we can soon compile a list of things that potentially complicate our lives. It may look like this: A cluttered area like a drawer or closet. Too many things you don’t use. Too many activities or commitments. A relationship that drains your energy. A chore or activity that you don’t enjoy. If we are to deal with this list effectively then we have to take things a little at a time and make an action plan. Don’t take on too much all at once as it can be overwhelming. You can resolve to do a little bit each day like clearing

16 Eye on Style Intelligent Sportswear Colour Splash for Spring ‘11 After a muted and soft autumn winter season, watch out for a colour explosion this spring! Ditch the black, navy and brown and embrace a riot of colour, have some spring fun! What to wear? Every colour under the sun was seen on the catwalks, but all shades of orange, from apricot, through coral and onto tangerine were highlights. Similarly with pinks, however the brighter and bolder hot pinks and magenta stood out. Yellow, green and red abounded, blues made a splash. These bright colours look best in flowing soft materials e.g. silks and satins.

Designed to tackle all your active needs the Sensitive© collection is ultra-light and breathable, supportive and protective against all weather conditions. Made with a four-way stretch honeycomb structure, the Sensitive© garments offer comfort, support and freedom of movement during exercise. With a higher percentage of elastane Lycra© the material is built to stretch in all directions moving with you like a second skin but also offering a firm muscle support. Bold block colour from Gucci Scared of colour? If you are a bit scared of an outfit in colour, embrace the new season’s colours with accessories. Already the stores are full of brightly coloured handbags and scarves. Pep up an existing outfit with a bright bag and matching nail polish. There are still lots of the nude and blush colours around which look good on most people. Camel is sticking around from winter and is a key element of the `70’s revival look.
How can you wear the bold colours? Colour can be worn as blocks e.g. a skirt in one colour and a top or blouse in another. Clash the colours, but be careful, the brighter bolder colour will draw attention, as will a print. Wear the colour or print to draw attention to your best assets. You can also wear the same colour head to toe. Don’t do matching, do toning, and use 2 or 3 shades or tones of the
Give your body an intelligent work out this year with the new M&S Sensitive© sports collection.
A secondary property of this unique fabric is that the open weave encourages natural air circulation maximising freshness and drawing moisture away from the skin. Thus making each item ultra light and easy to dry which is perfect for the gymto-work transition and there’s no longer a need to carry your soggy swimsuit around! All garments offer an equivalent sun protection of factor 50 so if the initial flurry of fitness prevails through to spring you’ll not only be fresh and dry but also SPF protected. The full collection is in stores and online now, prices start from £19.50 for the crop top and go up to £29.50 for a swimsuit. So if you are planning a fitness packed 2011 treat yourself to the perfect training partner, it’s stylish, intelligent and cheaper than a personal trainer!

26 Eye on Local Business BARNSLEY CIVIC TRUST WHO ARE WE? Barnsley Civic Trust champions pride in our town, is open to all, and seeks to involve anyone who cares about the town and its future. Founded in 2007, the Trust is an independent, non-political, voluntary organisation made up of local people who live and work in Barnsley. We want to see our town improve, we stimulate debate, promote pride and deliver practical projects to support our town. WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE Pride in the town and pride in its people. A place where our history is enhanced by our vision of friendly streets, exciting buildings and a dynamic atmosphere. Where challenge is welcomed and change is an evolutionary process. Over the past four years, Barnsley Civic Trust members have delivered several large projects and carried out a wide range of work to help promote the group and its aims as well as the town in general. This has included: Big debates - bringing together experts and a room full of people to look at an issue in the round, providing an opportunity for people to ask questions, make suggestions and generally increase our local understanding of the town. We have explored the ‘evening economy’ in town, transport and parking and the future of the market. The results of these events are used to influence decisions and change thinking.
Shops Awards - Many people are going out of town to shop and we wanted to see how we could encourage more of them to come into town. What was the answer? How could we encourage them back? Physically we can’t do anything, but, we could try another way, by encouraging retailers to make their shops more vibrant and interesting to look at. So the BCT “Shops Award” was born! BCT volunteers walk around the town talking to shop managers and giving out entry forms, as well as making a lot of new friends along the way. Overall, we get more than 200 businesses entering the competition, with winners announced in different categories and awards presented by the Mayor of Barnsley at a glamorous awards evening. Blue plaques - the Civic Trust has erected four blue plaques on town centre buildings to commemorate and celebrate some great past citizens of Barnsley. We are always keen to do more and hear who else people think should be remembered in this unque way. Social events – Barnsley Civic Trust brings its members and friends together in style, often taking the opportunity to see a new aspect of the town, For example, members were given a preview of the Civic Hall befire uts opening and a personal tour of Gateway Plaza. A town centre treasure hunt is fun for families and a ghost walk at halloween takes us around the darker corners of the town centre. Representing members’ views - Barnsley Civic Trust has been invited to contribute to the work of two important panels, giving an opportunity to represent the views and values of the BCT on important issues affecting the town: The Barnsley Council Regeneration Scrutiny Panel –carries out investigations into key regeneration issues and scrutinises the work and decisions of Barnsley Council which have an impact on regeneration. The Barnsley Urban Renaissance Design Panel reviews the design and quality of significant development schemes across Barnsley. It is made up of professional architects and urban designers, along with representatives from groups like the Civic Trust committed to improving design. Our Planning Group monitors town centre development, meets local planners and commenst on new proposals. We have taken a close interest in the development of the new college builng and are looking forward to see what new plans are coming formard for the markets development.
ANYONE CAN JOIN THE TRUST Whoever you are, whether a professional with appropriate expertise or someone with enthusiasm and a little spare time, your help would be warmly welcomed.

Eye on Local Business 27 Get Financially Fit However well intended, New Year resolutions can be a waste of time. There are the clichés such as joining the gym, quitting smoking and cutting down on alcohol consumption. Yet by the end of January, personal goals aimed at improving your lifestyle have often been hurled out of the window. Your gym kit along with your membership card remain packed in the bag in the closet, forever and a day. The start of the year is also seen as the ideal time to reflect on and review your personal finances. This year it is particularly important given the economic environment and rule changes announced by the Coalition in 2010. Ignoring your finances at this juncture could prove to be opportunities lost.
DAYS OUT: Tue 29th April
Last year saw changes in pensions legislation that will be introduced in April that could affect you. For starters, the Government has announced that from next 6 April the annual pension contribution limit will be reduced from £255,000 a year to just £50,000 – which is a hefty cut.
True Welsh Explorer 4★★★★ Metropole Hotel - 5 Days..£239
However, it is not all bad news. The new rules allow for three years’ unused allowance to be carried forward, which means in effect, someone who has not used their allowance could plough in £200,000 over any four-year period. This isn’t the only change that is to be introduced in April. It has been a long time coming, but the Government announced in December that, from April, people will no longer be forced to buy an annuity by the time they reach 75. Removing the need to purchase an annuity will increase the options that are available to individuals as and when they need to take benefits. For some individuals, the fact that they never need to purchase an annuity will make retirement planning more attractive. What is clear is that with all these changes, the need to take advice is so important.Besides the latest changes to pensions, it makes good sense to review your investment portfolio to ensure that it is on track to deliver its aims. As the tax belt tightens, making full use of the tax savings provided by your £10,200 annual Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowance becomes even more important. Clearly, the Government thinks so too. The annual allowance will be inflation-linked in future and will increase to £10,680 next tax year. This valuable tax-saving opportunity should be a fundamental building block towards financial security, yet it appears many have still not recognised this. At £3.7bn, year to date net ISA sales are at their highest level since 2001, according to the Investment Management Association in December 2010. However, as research by Fidelity from October 2010 revealed, although there are 44 million adults in the UK, just 14 million ISAs are receiving subscriptions. Remember if you don’t use your ISA tax allowance, you will lose it. It is also worth bearing in mind that the favourable tax treatment given to ISAs may not be maintained in the future as they are subject to changes in legislation. Other tax-efficient alternatives that higher earners might want to ponder include Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs) and Enterprise Investment Schemes (EIS). While they carry a higher risk for investors, VCTs give 30 per cent income tax relief on investment up to £200,000 with gains free of capital gains tax (the rate of CGT was raised to 28 per cent from 18 per cent last year) after five years. On the other hand, EIS investments offer 20 per cent income tax relief on investment up to £500,000 with gains free from capital gains tax (CGT) if held for more than three years and inheritance tax relief on underlying investments held for two years. The past 12 months have been an extraordinary year with the Coalition flexing its muscle as it bids to bring Britain back from the brink. They have introduced new measures that will not only affect the wider economy, but ones that will also impact individuals – 2011 is not a time to rest on your laurels. Its a great show which is all totally live with The Rat Pack Orchestra and The Fabulous Vegas Showgirls. Don’t miss out this year so make sure to pop down to the Metrodome and get your tickets early. LIVE SPECIAL
Dodgy @ Building 21, Elsecar Support: The Glavins, Vanquish & Legal Friday Building 21 at The Elsecar Heritage Centre kicked off its opening night in style with ‘90’s Indie pop chart toppers Dodgy, and a plethora of local support acts. Just to the south of Barnsley, the massive warehouse has been turned into a music venue with the aim to attract bigger acts to the town. The interior is huge, yet provides a perfect feel of intimacy which is lacking from most of the big venues in South Yorkshire. Thus, there’s a buzz of excitement and close knit anticipation for Dodgy. To begin though, we have local band to Elsecar, Legal Friday. The trio play covers of everything from Blur to Hadouken! From their own songs, highlights have to be Everything Is Alright - a repetitive heavy indie tune; and Elite - a song ode to a local taxi firm. The lads play a good set musically, but they don’t really engage the audience. To be fair to them, there aren’t many people in the venue when they are playing, but you have the feeling that they’re very nervous, and wanting to get through the set as quickly as possible. Vanquish are up next, and they bring with them heavy Brit Pop tones. They’re obviously heavily influenced by mid - ‘90’s indie music which on a night like tonight is not a bad thing. They fit the bill perfectly, and they start to banter with the audience - pulling more people in from the bar area. Musically, imagine Oasis’ Bring It On Down mixed without the snarls of Liam Gallagher and you’re there. The stand out song of their set has to be Won’t You Let Me In, and not because it’s the end of the set. Their heavy but relaxed tones are heavily laced with enjoyment, and that’s what set them apart. The Glavins are the final of the local support bands, and bring their own style of Brit Pop to the venue. They’re slightly to the west of Manchester though, hailing more of a Merseyside feel to their tunes. They’re always a crowd pleaser and more current with their sound than you’d first think. Although there is a feeling of a time warp with some of their songs, they have you tapping your foot, and feeling like you should know all of their songs. They’re fun, and the laid back acoustic guitars with pinches of tingly electric running through are warm and relatively fresh.
anthems. We’re slightly disappointed though, and they instead use their headline slot as an opportunity to promote their new album. Fair enough, many other bands would do the same. But you would also expect them to indulge the audience a little but more. When they did play the big-hitters, the atmosphere was electric with the definite highlight being the audience singing back during If You’re Thinking Of Me. The band played a few more songs from their new album, and a couple more favourites, before they leave the stage. There’s applause and cheers from the fairly busy venue, and they come back to perform a two song encore. Disappointingly, they decide to end the set on a cover - Al Wilson’s The Snake. All in all, it was a fantastic opening night for Barnsley’s newest venue, providing excellent local music as the support for a band, who were once major heavyweights of the British Music Scene. Sally Altass - www.sallysgiggreviews.com
So, we move onto the headline act, Dodgy. They come onto the stage without much fuss, and launch straight into old favourite In A Room, raising expectations that it’s going to be a night of sing-a-long

For those of you who don’t know me I am a Barnsley bred stand up comedian. This month I ventured out into ‘that there London’ to compere at the world famous Jongleurs comedy club. On first impressions the venue was exquisite. I was expecting the punters to be prim and proper lardy dars, BOY was I wrong! The recipe of the night started with a clearly inebriated young woman demanding that I perform sordid sex acts on her in public and ended with her punching the manager, getting into two fights and being sick onto a lovely middle aged ladies Louis Vuitton coat. Amazingly a bloke still took her home. The best thing about it was that these incidents made me feel at home. At one point as the young woman screamed and punched the stunned manager on the bridge of his nose I admit I even shed a sentimental tear. It made me miss home, my family, Barnsley! There isn’t a great deal of domestic violence in Barnsley as the women are clearly just too hard. We at Love Comedy endeavour to provide the funniest, most enjoyable comedy nights this country has to offer at the Holiday Inn, formerly Brooklands. The last Friday of every month. Check out our website for further details and new events and follow us on twitter @ lovecomedy101 for details of special offers. I will leave you with one of my faveorite one liners: “I nursed my father through a slow and painful death - he was eaten by a tortoise!” That was one of the very few jokes I know that I could write about here and still keep a job! Until next time -
