Barnsley is BUZZING!!!

Dear Barnsley Eye, last month me and my best friend Helen came on a hen night to Barnsley as part of a group of some thirty plus girls of all ages. I must admit at first I was a bit aprehensive as quite a few of the people I know and work with were telling me it was quite rough and the locals were unfriendly. What I found out is that couldn’t have been further from the truth! Barnsley is a fantastic place with great buzzing nightlife, brilliant places to eat and even better people. Almost everyone we met was so friendly that we were beginning to think they were mistaking us for people they knew. We ate at Chili Restaraunt which was marvellous and bars that stood out in particular on the evening were Coco, The Walkabout, Lucorum and Blah Blah Bar. I would just like to say from me and all the girls - thankyou to the people of Barnsley for making us all feel so welcome. Oh, and we picked up a copy of the Barnsley Eye magazine in town before we headed home on Sunday morning and we read it on the bus home. Everyone agreed that it was a fantastic read! Sarah J, South Shields via email Thankyou Sarah J - we are glad you liked the magazine and your night out in our town. Barnsley town centre has certainly had it’s fair share of critics over the years so it’s good to get some positive feedback from a recent visitor from out of town. Readers what do you think? Is it’s reputation justified? Email us here at the Eye to let us know your thoughts.................

Countdown to the Olympics by Natalie Rowan of Kingstone School From the wonder of the Opening Ceremony to the thrills of the sporting action, we here at the Barnsley Eye are really exited about the London 2012 Olympic Games. In this new feature for the Barnsley Eye - Natalie Rowan of Kingstone School writes about the history of the games as part of her work experience with the Eye.

Athens, Greece 1896

Antwerp, Belgium 1920

The first modern day Olympic Games were celebrated in Athens, Greece and took place on the 6th-15th of April, 1896. 241 athletes participated and 14 nations took part in the games. Including countries such as Britain, France, Germany and Greece.

The sixth Olympic Games were originally going to take place in Berlin, 1916. However, the Games were cancelled because of the Great War. The Games were rescheduled for April 20th-September 12th 1920, and took place in Antwerp, Belgium to honor the people of that city due to the suffering of World War 1. Many Olympic traditions were introduced at these Games such as the Olympic Flag and the Olympic Oath.

Paris, France 1900 Four years later, in 1900 came the second modern Olympic Games, which were held in Paris, France. The events began on May 14th and ended October 28th. No opening or closing ceremonies were held at Paris and it was the first time that women had competed in the Olympics. However, they were still outnumbered by many, as there were only 22 females compared to 975 male competitors.

St Louis, USA 1904 From July 1st –November 23rd, 1904 the Olympic Games took place in St Louis, Missouri, USA. This was the first time that bronze, silver and gold medals were presented, and decathlon was introduced. 651 athletes participated in the events – 645 men and only 6 women.

London, Great Britain 1908 The fourth Olympic Games were held in London from April 27th-October 21st 1908, after Rome pulled out last minute due to the money that would have been used for the Games, being needed to rebuild Naples after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1906. A stadium was purpose built to host the games called White City Stadium, and all swimming events were held in a pool instead of open water, as they were previously.

Stockholm, Sweden 1912 In 1912, the Olympic Games were celebrated in Stockholm, Sweden. Starting on May 5th and finising July 27th. Athletes from all five continents competed for the first time while PA systems, electric timing and the photo finish were brought in. Native American athlete, Jim Thorpe won the decathlon and pentathlon by huge distances. He was declared “the greatest athlete in the world” by King Gustav, who was there for the opening ceremony.

Paris, France 1924 The next Games took place in Paris, France from May 4th-July 27th, 1924. Paris became the first city to hold the games for a second time after first holding them at the start of the century. The number of nations taking part increased from 29 to 44, and the first closing ceremony was also staged in Paris. There were a total of 126 events that took place, and 3,089 athletes competed. It was plain to see that the Olympic games were growing every four years.

Amsterdam, Netherlands 1928 Next came the May 17th-August 14th Games in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1928. The iconic Olympic Flame was lit for the first time at Amsterdam, by an employee of the Electric Utility of Amsterdam in the Marathon Tower of the Olympic Stadium something which has continued to be a tradition to this very day. There was a total of 2,883 athletes participating (2,606 men and 277 women).

Join us next month where Natalie will be writing more about the Olympic games, featuring Los Angeles in 1932 right through to the the 1960’s. Do you have a favorite Olympic Moment? Let us know here at the Eye at enquiries@joolmedia.com My favorite Olympic moment is the mighty Daley Thompson (right) whistling while the national anthem played after his decathlon gold glory in LA, 1984 what a guy!! 06 Eye on Local News New Management Team are Going for Gold! Holiday Inn, has strengthened its management team with the appointment of Ann Kelly. Ann has been appointed at the hotel as operations manager and joins general manager Jason Hiley who took the top role at the hotel in late 2010 after holding positions as general manager for the Holiday Inn Bristol City Centre and Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham. Ann previously held the post of general manager at Ardsley House Hotel and brings a wealth of local knowledge and experience to her new role. Her main focus will be building on the existing high quality and service standards to move the hotel forward to the next level and to ensure that when people need to book an event in the Barnsley area, the Holiday Inn Barnsley is at the top of everyone’s list. The four-star hotel, previously Brooklands hotel, became a Holiday Inn franchise in 2009. It is still home to Brooklands restaurant, which is famous for its Barnsley Chop and the new management are keen to point out that the although the name of the hotel has changed people can still expect the high standards and quality the venue is renowned for. Ann said: “This is a very exciting time both for the hotel and myself and we will be implementing some positive changes all aimed at enhancing the guest experience.” Jason Hiley, general manager added: “Our international trademark of quality, ‘Holiday Inn’, is only a small part of what we want this hotel in Barnsley to stand for. We are independently owned and locally managed which is important as we continue to be a cornerstone venue in the local community”

Eye on Chamber of Commerce 07 Speaker Issues Communication Call to Businesses House of Commons speaker John Bercow MP was joined by key business figures within the region, as the inaugural Sheffield City Region Business Conference saw vital themes debated in front of over 200 people. Mr Bercow kicked off proceedings at Barnsley Metrodome by urging businesses to channel their views to parliament via their MPs, before debates took place relating to three headline themes - Skills for Growth, Infrastructure for Growth and Conditions for Growth – before guests including five MPs and Master Cutler Pam Liversidge. The morning featured interactive panel discussions chaired by Adam Marshall, Director of Policy and External Affairs at the British Chambers of Commerce, and featuring television presenter and TeenTech founder Maggie Philbin; Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn and James Newman, Chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

Success On The Menu A previously unemployed Rotherham man has successfully established a cafe in the town thanks to support from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. Stephen Jones (right) opened the doors of the Broadway Diner in Swinton in January, after accessing guidance from the Chamber through the Government’s New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) scheme. The NEA scheme provides guidance and support to anyone who has been claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) for 26 weeks or more as they develop their business plan and through the early months of trading. Stephen made the decision to open the diner after completing a catering course and gaining an enterprise qualification, and the expertise of Brij Chaggar, a Business Advisor at the Chamber, was a major help along the way. “My partner and I were both unemployed and were thinking about setting up a cafe last summer, but we didn’t have the funds or the knowledge of how to do it,” Stephen said. “We found out about the scheme and went to see Brij, who advised us and helped us put a business plan together. “Everything snowballed after we started working with Brij. His help enabled us secure the premises we wanted, which other people were also interested in. Things have been going well since we opened up and we have found we’ve been getting double the amount of customers we’d expected.” The scheme also entitles participants to a weekly allowance worth £1,274 over 26 weeks, and Stephen has no hesitation in recommending the programme to unemployed people looking to set up a business. “My advice to anyone interested in setting up a business through the scheme is to just go for it! It is surprising how much support is available and it is well worth it when you are up and running as we are now.”

Anyone interested the New Enterprise Allowance scheme should call 0844 2253 202 (Barnsley) or 0844 2253 236 (Rotherham).

Mapplewell Marauders are BPL League Champs! Mapplewell Marauders were the winners of Barnsley Premier Leisure’s Winter 6-a-side Football League last month held at Darton Community Sports Centre. The Marauders topped the table only just beating fellow high flyers Boom Team who between them had shared top spot all season. The Centre then held a 6 team knockout tournement and low and behold the two teams to reach the final were....Boom Team and Mapplewell Marauders! The teams were so evenly matched that the game ended in a draw and went to a penalty shootout in which Mapplewell won due to the heroics of their goalkeeper Col Chapman. BPL’s Tom Ramsay who organises the League said “This seasons League has been fantastic. The Best yet! We’ve registered more teams than ever and it is really starting to grow. More importantly it has also been played in the right spirit and it’s beenso close it’s made for thrilling viewing ... this year there were at least 5 teams that could have won the league with 3 games to go!”

Mapplewell Marauders (above) proudly show off their winners trophy and medals. Runners up Boom Team (below).

Tom added: “The League is not only a success because of the teams there’s a lot of hard work goes in from the referrees Ricky Taylor, Kris Jowett and Luke Bailey who are out there in all weathers and the staff at Darton work hard organising the fixtures and configuring the scores and tables. The success of the League is a team effort in itself”.

Q & A with Jason Hiley; General Manager @ The Holiday Inn, Dodworth

that’s to sit on a chair and type until you see 100,000 words on your word count in the corner. Writing books is a bit like going on a diet – everyone wants the easy route, but there isn’t one. You just have to get on and do it.

EYE: Hello Jason, how have you found the last 12 months at the Holiday Inn here in Barnsley? JH: Hi. The past 12 months have been very challenging and exciting. The hotel has undergone a lot of changes with strengthening the hotel management team, and repositioning the hotel as a value for money venue in the Borough. E: How do you find living in Barnsley? Barnsley is a great place to live and work, full of friendly and down to earth people. The town has so many positives, with its proximity to the Pennines, its renowned market, the regeneration plans of the town centre and its fantastic attractions in Wentworth Castle, Cannon Hall, the Civic Centre to name a few. E: What’s been the most challenging job you’ve had? Well, it is most certainly this one. The hotel is very dynamic, with so many facilities to offer, and of course in an economic climate where managing customer expectations and the books are very demanding. As an example, with utilities increasing by 15% in 2012, food costs increasing by 12%, the VAT change in January 2011, we have been adamant to price freeze, or lower prices were possible to help us become a venue of choice in Barnsley. E: What is your ambition? My short term ambition is to grow on the successes of the Holiday Inn Barnsley, and for the hotel to be recognised on a regional level for its hospitality and great standards. Longer term, to successfully run more hotels and inspire people to progress their careers in the industry. E: If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? My laugh, I sound like a hyena, it can be very embarrassing in more professional situations! E: Who inspires you? It may sound corny, but it’s my team. The industry is very demanding, but the Managers and staff at the hotel are truly committed to providing the best possible experience and are always smiling. To name a few, Rachel in Sales and Marketing, June in Housekeeping, Kate my Administrator, Keith the Head Chef, Sarah in the Restaurant, Sue in Conference and Graham and Steve in Maintenance, they work endlessly to make the hotel a great place to be in and a pleasure to manage. E: What do you value most in other people? Honesty, commitment and a great sense of humour. E: Where is your favourite place in the world? My mums house, but a close second would be Florida!

Writing is one of those professions which seem to fascinate people. Whenever I do a talk, there are always questions asked about the process of creating a book: Where do I get my ideas from? How do I plot? Where do I start? All questions, I hasten to add, that once sat in my mind when I was a wannabe writer. So, when I was asked to do a few lectures on board a ship last year, I decided to make one of them ‘A Lot of What You Need To Know About Writing A Book.’ I’d like to have called it ‘All you need to know…’ but I’m still learning. On the job. Don’t go on a writing a book course by anyone who isn’t either a writer themselves or a very experienced editor because doing it is the only real learning curve. On Sunday June 17th at the Holiday Inn in Dodworth, between 2pm -5pm, my fellow novelist Victoria Howard and myself will be hosting an afternoon where would-be writers can come and learn the answers to all those questions which have been preventing you from getting that book out and down onto paper. Trust me, I was one of those people who procrastinated once. Whilst my book was safe inside me, I was an ‘undiscovered talent’ – once my book was written and trying to seduce a publisher into buying it, I was risking rejection and the end of my fantasy. Many people are scared of exposing their dream to reality. But there’s only one way to write a book and

What we can do though, is give you plenty of pointers, tips, advice on how to – and how not to - approach an agent. We can tell you what worked for us, how we write, plot, write dialogue and description and answer all your burning questions. This is a course run by two women who didn’t make excuses that ‘they were going to write a book one day, when they weren’t so busy’ because we did it holding down day-jobs and MAKING time to write. Then we risked our dreams being smashed up by sending it out there to be adjudged by professionals – and not taking no for an answer when it was rejected. And now we are earning our wage by doing the best job in the world. If you seriously want to write, or are just interested in the process – because it is fascinating how words are put together – come and join us. I can more or less guarantee that you’ll leave us that afternoon enlightened, with your head buzzing, your hands full of booklets and your stomach full of scones – because afternoon tea will be served as well and they do a cracking scone up there. And if anyone can kick you up the bum to get started, we can. Oh and if you’re thinking of buying a place on the course for a mother’s/ father’s day present or a birthday – let us know and we’ll giftwrap a ticket for you. Remember – Victoria and I were once on the outside of the profession knocking to come in.

Milly Tickets are £25, £18 for students and members of the RNA New Writers Scheme. Price includes 2 x lectures, extended Q & A session, afternoon tea and take-home supporting literature. Places must be booked by ringing (01226) 232606 or email Victoria@victoriahoward.co.uk or katewill@blueyonder.co.uk

10 Eye on Health ROAD TO RECOVERY Written for The Eye by BPL Fitness Instructor Mark Elliott

We all try to stay fit and healthy but the fact is, injuries happen; especially if you play a contact sport in your free time. Recovering from an injury can be a long and difficult road depending on the type of injury you have suffered. A sprained ankle may be painful and leave you unable to hit the gym for a while, but things like torn muscles, strained ligaments or torn ligaments can lead to further problems later in life if you don’t look after yourself while in recovery. The best advice is to always follow the instructions of your doctor or a trained health professional. If they say no exercise for a few months then that is exactly the best thing to do. But what about when you can exercise again? People tend to try and push themselves to make up for lost time or go straight into their usual workout routine. The results can be a further set back as your relapse and the old injury reoccurs. When returning to the gym you need to consider the nature of your injury. If you had a shoulder injury you shouldn’t go straight to lifting heavy weights to strengthen it. If you have had an ankle or knee injury then pounding out the miles on the treadmill could aggravate it further. You need to start off with low impact exercises and there is none better than swimming. Swimming allows you to work the affect area with very minimal impact. The water supports your weight, taking strain away from the recovering area. This helps to build strength in the recovering area and to help you build back the base fitness that you may have lost after a spell on the sidelines.

Here Comes The Sun! MARCH – at last! Spring is on its way. Although the winter has been relatively kind to us this year we all look forward to the sunshine. Often say we will feel better for a bit of sunshine on our bodies and how true that is. When I am doing a consultation before a first complementary therapy treatment, I regularly ask my client if they manage to spend some time outside during the day. This question is important because being outside in the sunshine is an important thing to do. The sunshine changes cholesterol into vitamin D in the skin. Most of the time we get vitamins from the food we eat, but vitamin D is slightly different in that, although it is present in some of our food the major source is created by being outside in the daylight. Most people will know that calcium is needed for healthy bones and teeth but you also need vitamin D to make that happen. Vitamin D also helps to maintain the immune system and boosts our mood and feelings of well-being. Exposing your skin to the sun 2 to 3 times per week during the summer is enough to have healthy levels of vitamin D throughout the year. If it is not possible to spend time in the sunshine, we have to look towards food for our source of vitamin d. there are very few food sources but the main sources are oily fish, egg, fortified margarines, spreads and fortified cereals. Most people should get enough vitamin D by eating a healthy diet and getting out into the sunshine. However there are some groups of people who might need to consider taking a supplement such as the elderly and the very young. So what can happen if we don’t get enough vitamin D? Well it can affect bone formation in children making bone softer. Signs are that legs are bowed. The common name for this is Rickets. In adults it can lead to a condition called osteomalacia. In its mild form there are general aches and pains but this can increase to pain in ribs, hips, pelvis, thighs and knees. It is more common than most of us would think especially as rickets is a disease that we think of as typical of Victorian times. But today’s lifestyle is causing a comeback. The main advice then is to get outside in the sunshine and lead a healthy lifestyle. Eat a varied diet that contains oily fish. Get out in the sunshine whenever possible but don’t allow the skin to go red or burn. If you are concerned however, consult your doctor.

Written by Maria Nortcliffe MAR. MICHT Many athletes use swimming to aid in recovery and training. Heavy Weight champion Wladimir Klitschko (above) actually trains in a pool. Due to his age and the heavy pounding his joints has taken, he shuns high impact exercises like running and does all of his aerobic work outs in water. If it is good enough for a world champion then it is certainly good enough to get you back in shape. After you have strengthened the recovery area start small, scaling back your usual routine in the gym. This way you can test the limit of the recovery area with little risk of relapse. Just remember to always heed the doctors advice.

Until Next - to Mark WeMonth would like wish all are clients and you the Barnsley eye reader a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

So many girls put fashion before what actually suits them, skin tone, condition and AGAIN budget are major Why not inject some colour factors to consider when into your hair wardrobe? going red. Ask the expert....... With the tightening our everyone’s belt buckles due to the economic climate I am having an influx of guests coming through the salon with colour disasters - either they’ve had a go themselves to save money (at what Cost?) or they visited a salon not specialising in competent colouring. My advice is if you are on a budget it need not cost the earth to live life in colour. Professional salons usually offer sales at certain times or year or discount days, or maybe have a less experienced member of staff.

We would like to wish all are clients and you the Barnsley eye reader a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

For an appointment just telephone 01226 208555 or pop in and see us at The Thomas Whitworth Forum / Hanson St. S70 2HZ

So what colour? The trend for spring is continuing with the red theme, reds certainly do turn heads! But, make sure it is for the right reason

Red is such a lovely colour to work with and is not just Flame red which is sported by many younger girls - it can be softened with warm coppers or perhaps adding some darker tones in to give the hair depth- I took my inspiration for the above stage work from the flames of an open fire, earthy warm tones of glowing copper to deeper tones of burnt embers.

Within my salon we advise on selective highlighting that can lengthen you visits between colour appointments- great if you’re on a budget, always book a free consultation to discuss Have a fabulous spring and your desires, expectations live life in colour. and of course budget.

The spring shades are offering a lighter alternative to winters strong jewel colours. If you don’t want to wear pastels head to foot, mix with denim, navy blue, taupe and white. Ladies with a darker hair colour need to contrast their pastels with some darker hues. But why not mix it with…..

The High street is flooded with geometric designs and tribal ethno prints in the whole colour spectrum. Mixing and clashing prints in one outfit can work as long as you stick to one style of print e.g. floral and mix up the size of the print OR stick to a colour and use it in two different prints. ith winter coming to an end, what would be better than to push all the dull, grey clothes to the back of your wardrobe and freshen it up with some bright splashes of colour. Here you can find out what you will need to be on trend for the upcoming season. The main trends for this year’s spring/summer season consist of 3 different looks. Floral Print, Pastels and Sporty:

1

The first look is floral print, you can find floral patterns in just about every type of clothing there is on the high street. Items such as tops, trousers, skirts and even shoes can be found covered with these bright and bold floral patterns. If you look in the right places, they don’t have to be expensive either! It’s okay to wear different floral patterns together too. This trend can make you look so confident - as its all about the clashing prints this season.

TOP TIP If you don’t feel confident enough to wear a full floral outfit, then try a plain top and a patterned skirt (or vice versa), with some floral accessories such as a bag, shoes or jewellery.

All clothes found at topshop.com

2

The second look of the season is pastels. Not only are pastels great on their own, but they can go really well with floral prints too (you can wear two looks in one!) Just like the floral prints, you can find pastel colored clothes all over the high street, in all different colours and materials.

TOP TIP Mixing together different pastel colors in your outfit, and adding in small things such as pastel nail varnish really brings the outfit together.

All clothes found at topshop.com. Barry M nail varnish from Google images

3

With the Olympics fast approaching, our last look is sporty. To take on this style, you don’t have to look like you’re on your way down to the gym, all you need is one item to add to your outfit to pull off this trend, but still making sure it looks feminine. Layering clothes is also on trend for the sporty look, layering crop tops over t-shirts or shorts over leggings is a key look. Also, you can wear neon in a range of different materials and patterns, it’s a great finishing touch to this look, even if it’s just a small accessory.

TOP TIP Converse hi tops are great for the sporty look, they are really on trend and don’t take much effort to look good! They look great teamed with a pair of bright skinny jeans. All clothes found at topshop.com, apart from converse shoes. Visit www.converse.com

22 Eye on Food

THE BARNSLEY EYE RESTAURANT AWARDS Here in Barnsley we have some fantastic restaurants. The Barnsley Eye have yet again teamed up with local businesman Paul Hoyle of RTR (Road to Recovery) to present this award for the second consecutive year. The prize for the overall winner is a prestegious engraved plaque plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine. You may remember Paul as “Party Paul” from channel 4’s Come Dine With Me. Paul will be reveiwing restaurants around Barnsley and scoring them on specific criterior.

The aim of these awards is to raise awareness of just how many excellent restaurants Barnsley has to offer.

The Cross Keys, Hoyland Common. At The Cross Keys, Craig (pictured below on the right) has turned this old pub into a buzzing lively family pub/restaurant and steak house. When I say steak house I mean STEAK house, using unbelievable 21 day old local beef.Loads of pubs do steaks - but not like this one trust me; anything from an 8 oz sirloin to the daddy of all 64 oz. Craig also does that crazy “eat it all and don’t pay for it” deal............. I dare you to try it!! I’ve seen many people fail but they fail and are happy to do so as the food here is up there with the best pub food I have had in South Yorkshire and it’s mostly down to the chef Sally and her team.

MARCH WINNER

I was introduced to Sally and was very impressed by this young lady, straight away when we spoke you could tell the passion she has for cooking as have the whole gang at the Cross Keys. They are passionate about making this place work. (I don’t think they have to worry). It’s great to see one of these old traditional pubs being brought back to life instead of being closed down ! Oh by the way before I forget - the desserts are fantastic! Look at mine on the right. One word “Shortbread”!!! I have to score this place a well deserved 10 out of 10 because I could literally not find fault in any area. Pleasant surroundings, good wine, excellent atmosphere, ample parking, excellent service, great people and most of all fantastic food. Why not give The Cross Keys at Hoyland Common a try? It’s the first pub you come to on the left if you head towards Hoyland Common off Birdwell roundabout and if you do.....tell em PARTY Paul sent you….10/10

Would you like Party Paul to visit your Restaurant? The prize for the overall winner is a prestegious engraved plaque for your esbalishment (like the one below) plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine.

Do I Need the INTERNET CLOUD?

What is this CLOUD all about???? The “cloud” is the internet, and the term is fitting – it’s large, out there somewhere, and fuzzy at the edges. Cloud computing is about putting more of your material out there and less on your own PCs or servers within your business. That way you can save a lot of money and hassle! Plus you could start to use the internet more efficiently.

Willy

Everybody is sure that cloud computing is key to the future of IT, but people often seem unsure quite what it is. In fact, it’s an umbrella term for a number of different trends, all involving the internet and its potential to simplify the way we use computers, tablets and smartphones. Just imagine, an address book you never lose, a calendar that you can share with your colleagues and friends, a place to keep every; document you produced, photo you ever took, favourite video without the risk of losing them. Not only that, you can get hold of the material wherever you can log onto the internet, anywhere in the world, any time! Literally freeing you from that expensive laptop, lost work on crashed drives, the need for a server in your business! Enter the phrase SaaS or Software-as-a-Service, instead of buying software at the shop and paying for annual licenses or upgrades, you can browse on line and just use it either for free or pay very small charges for added functionality. The apps that we are increasingly using on our phones are available on line in your internet browser, the major player being Google themselves delivering a suite of apps for business use that will only cost £33 p.a. per user, these include email, calendar, document storage, video conferencing, easy web site builders as well as many more useful tools. This is a fraction of the cost of the traditional approach to IT business costs.

Princess Cody

This all means more uptime, no server required, no updates or licenses, the basic apps even provide skinned down versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint, once classed as a must have application for every member of your staff. The truth is the Cloud has arrived and it will change the way we use the internet, the gadgets we buy but moreover the way we organise our lives and share information with our friends, families and colleagues. Need help with your internet marketing? Get in touch with iRun, large or small; there is an effective and affordable solution for your business.

Noel Gallagher & the High Flying Birds Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield. 21st February 2012

Reviewed by Steve Betts

Noel Gallagher seems to be going through somewhat of a renaissance. His album debuted at number one, he’s on more radio / TV shows than I care to recollect, and he’s just performed at The Brits, where he was also nominated. His previous band, Oasis, were somewhat the critics favourite to bash, told they were stuck in Britpop and hadn’t written a memorable song since Wonderwall. After seeing Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds in action, at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena, I can confirm, Noel is back and he has now written a memorable song since Wonderwall. Although there are still many Oasis fans in the arena (myself included), it appears Noel has restocked his fan base with a new younger contingent. One of the many new fans was a young lady who watched the whole gig topless, an act Noel found amusing and satisfactory, but just don’t tell his wife! The gig was a blend of classic Oasis and the whole of his new album, along with a new gem, Freaky Teeth. Of the new stuff; If I had a gun, Dream on and AKA.... What a Life all received a warm and loud reception. It was always going to be the Oasis classics that lifted the ceiling, Don’t Look Back in Anger and an acoustic version of Supersonic did just that. The crowd bounced, sang and thoroughly enjoyed themselves right to the end. The 90’s may be a distant memory, but new and old classic songs will get people up and singing. Mr Noel Gallagher, I thank you for my sore legs and croaky voice. Bravo! SB

Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes Friday 30th March until Sunday 1st April 2012 @ The Motorpoint Arena Sheffield

Tinker Bell whisks audiences through classic moments from some of Disney’s most beloved stories of beautiful princesses and their daring heroes. Through artistic skating and graceful acrobatics, Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes beautifully recreating the defining moments when eight Disney Princesses’ wishes are fulfilled with help from their devoted Princes. In this new touring show produced by Feld Entertainment, audiences will go where imaginations soar and anything can happen if they just believe. Ariel’s dreams are unlocked from under the sea and, in one magical moment, Prince Eric breaks Ursula’s slithering spell to reclaim his one true love. In a race against time to rescue Sleeping Beauty’s Aurora, Prince Philip defeats the evil Maleficent as she transforms into a fire-breathing dragon. Tiana celebrates her ambitions of owning a restaurant down in New Orleans; Jasmine discovers a whole new world with Aladdin and Snow White finds her one true love. This beautiful presentation also reveals Cinderella and Belle’s deepest wishes. Tickets for Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Friday 30th March to Sunday 1st April 2012, priced £13-£35.50 & family tickets £42-£72 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale, in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at
