Spiders get such a hard time! Next time you see one scurry across the floor of your room before you reach for a copy of the Eye to splatter it - remember this picture I took and the beautiful intricate webs they spin. Plus without the spider there would be “more” flys...and what good are they? GM
Summer is Over! But did it ever begin?
A surefire sign that Summer is over is when we see (and hear) the Canada Geese clearing off. This flock were snapped formation flying over the skys of Wombwell migrating back to Africa from the Welands at Manvers... see you next year. GM
Eye Remember When... Hard to believe that my grandad Roy Kilner born in Wombwell was only 18 when this picture was taken. He went off to war to fight the fascist Nazi regime in 1939 returning to go back down the pit - working at Barrow Colliery until he retired at 60. If it weren’t for heros like him we could all be singing to a different tune at Wembley watching the football and Rugby....It is Rememberance Sunday next month. Wear your Poppy with Pride! For Roy and all the servicemen who put their lives on the line... for a brighter future. GM

Eye on Local News 05 Barnsley Based Author Hits Amazon’s Bestsellers List Local crime author Ryan Bracha has reached number three in the comedy-crime genre best sellers’ list on the worlds largest online retailer Amazon. Ryan from Keresforth Court, Barnsley saw his novel “Strangers Are Just Friends You Haven’t Killed Yet” become an instant hit on online retail website since it was realeased last month. Ryan (right) is 33 years worth of ideas just screaming to be unleashed on an unsuspecting public. By the age of 24 he had written and directed his first feature film, ‘Tales From Nowhere’ which was well received and enjoyed a limited release around his native Yorkshire. His second screenplay, ‘Dirt Merchants’ never made it to screen but was an outlet for his desire to tell stories. ‘Strangers Are Just Friends You Haven’t Killed Yet’ is his debut novel and is a darkly comic satire based on the state of the media in the face of what appears to be a serial killer stalking the streets of Sheffield. The book was almost 4 years in the making, Ryan said: “The book fluctuates around the top 25 crime-genre best sellers list as it stands but the highest it reached so far was number three. Reviews from people have been excellent and the book has been likened to novels by authors such as Chris Brookmyre which is a massive compliment as he is a top satrical author. I promise you though that my second novel won’t take as long to write”.
What do you get if you cross a French sex addict hitman, a self-righteous left wing blogger with a spam problem, a racist bar room regular, an American gangster with a lot of reflecting to do, a small time journalist who dreams of the big time, a weak-willed loner with a Victorian lion hunter alter-ego, a flamboyant PR guru and his devilish plans, a very recently unemployed call centre drone, an old man with a hell of a grudge, and a LOT, of dead bodies? What you get is the thrilling debut novel by Barnsley-based author, Ryan Bracha. The naked corpse of a young man is discovered with his throat sliced open on a cool autumn morning in a Sheffield park by an elderly dog-walker, as usual. This is the first of a rapidly increasing number of seemingly random killings in the city, leading to a frenzy of media and public speculation, in which everyone is a suspect, and everyone has an opinion. Daisy is pointing the finger at the media, rookie journalist David is dreaming of future awards for his coverage of the whole thing, and Terry blames the Asians. What is actually happening is a far more sinister affair which threatens to spiral out of control.

06 Eye on Local News Metrodome Staff Bowl Over Barnsley Hospice
On Friday 7th September over 50 staff from the Barnsley Metrodome took part in a 12hr ten pin ‘bowlathon’ to help raise money for charity, Barnsley Hospice. The fund raising event started at 10am, where 50 staff took it in turns to continuously bowl down the lanes for 12 hours straight. Barnsley Hospice is a charity that provides specialist palliative care and support to hundreds of local people and their families each year. Their main priority is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients with a life limiting illness, whilst supporting their families, during the period of illness and bereavement. The staff at the Metrodome turned to friends, family and associates to help raise the funds. To assist, Metrodome bowling had a raffle and tombola. There was also face painting and body art sessions for children. Together with friends and family they raised a total of £750 for Barnsley Hospice.
BPL Feels the Olympic Effect at ALL its Venues Over the Summer months the whole world was gripped with Olympic fever and our nation went above and beyond expectations. The Olympic effect also ran through BPL as individuals were motivated to get involved with sport and leisure activities. All of BPL’s sites reported a significant membership and activity participation increase in comparison to the Summer of 2011. Here is just a snippet of the success London 2012 had on BPL. Swimming was one of the highlights throughout the Olympics and this had a positive effect for BPL, certainly at the Barnsley Metrodome. During the summer of 2011 the Metrodome received 33,541 swimmers. This summer the Metrodome received 50,062 swimmers which is an incredible increase of 49%. The most significant increase in August 2012 for the Metrodome was the gym users. 9285 people visited the gym this August in comparison to the 3799 from last year, a huge 144.4% increase.
Retford Leisure Centre received an additional 508 people attending fitness classes and gym membership increased by 330. Worksop Leisure Centre had 2998 people swimming in August in comparison to the 2075 in 2011 and an additional 200 gym members this year. Athletics usage at BPL received an increase of 20% going up from 1241 visitors in 2011 to 1441 visitors in 2012.

on Talent 05 Eye on ChamberEye of Commerce 07 Top Referee Howard Gets Down To Business Premier League football referee Howard Webb has taken centre stage at the new home of his beloved Rotherham United - yet there wasn’t a whistle or red card in sight! Howard was the guest speaker as Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce hosted an executive business lunch at the Millers’ New York Stadium – a special event for Patrons and Platinum Members of the Chamber. Representatives of numerous businesses heard Howard recount a series of stories from his 23-year refereeing career, which has seen him take charge of the finals of the 2010 World Cup, 2010 Champions League, 2009 FA Cup and 2007 League Cup – in addition to being the man in the middle at vital matches in the 2008 and 2012 European Championships. Phil Coley, Director of Duocall Communications, paid £200 after successfully bidding for a signed Premier League referees shirt - kindly donated by Howard and complete with yellow and red cards in the top pocket - in an auction to raise money for Rotherham Mayor’s Charity fund Howard said: “It was fantastic to share my experiences with representatives of local businesses at the New York Stadium which is a positive and visionary investment that Rotherham should be proud of. Many of the businesses and people present are part of that positive, forward-looking approach and have a key role to play in the success of our town’s economy.” Chamber Executive Director Andrew Denniff (right) said: “We are delighted that Howard accepted our invite to address our members and that he was able to do so at the Millers’ new home. “Howard is a superb representative of Rotherham in the way he has forged such a successful refereeing career which has taken him from grass roots football to the pinnacle of the World Cup final. It was enlightening to hear anecdotes from his journey and all our attendees were all kept extremely entertained.” There are also a wide range of sponsorship opportunities available for the event.

together and this exhibition has been developed by the artists, giving them an opportunity to present themselves and their own voices, outside of a curatorial vision. Light and Line is a Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery touring exhibition, funded by Arts Council England (Lottery Funding).
Polly Binns and Anne Morrell met over 30 years ago and, whilst a decade separates them and they have very different career histories and working methods, they share a dedication to making. Both artists use stitch as structural and mark-making components in the development of their images and ideas. Polly works directly on to the material, letting the journey of the stitch flow immediately; Anne works with an idea at the beginning of the process which then develops and changes in the making.
The exhibition is open 22.11.12 – 04.01.13
Both artists also share a fascination with the light and texture of landscape. Anne uses stitch to capture closely-observed moments in nature: ‘I look at the sky; I look down on the ground; and I find marks made visible by wind, ice and snow. All create a language.’ Polly’s continuing relationship with landscape is a powerful source of inspiration for her work, found both in its minutest detail and in the vast, shifting planes of land, sea and sky on the North Norfolk coast near her home. This will be the first time that Polly and Anne have shown

Be Positive.... Be Happy! by Maria Nortcliffe MAR. MICHT Autumn is here once again. The nights are well and truly drawing in. We are looking forward to Bonfire Night, Christmas shopping and all the festivities associated with November and December. It is exciting for some but can be endless hard work for others. Many people go into a kind of decline as the year winds down and can even become quite depressed at the thought of another year drawing to a close. A recent study by the NHS Information Centre found that a quarter of all middle-aged women will fall victim to depression. Strangely enough many well known people have recently spoken about their own experiences in the press and popular magazines. It affects people in all walks of life, even those who seem to have everything seem to be touched by it, and it seems to be on the increase. Depression has many causes. It can be due to increased and often never-ending workload. It may be relationship problems at work or in the home. You may have experienced a bereavement or separation or divorce. On the other hand some may have a genetic pre-disposition to depression and some may develop symptoms when going through the menopause. There are some practical things you can do to help and one is to seek help. Your first port of call will be your doctor who will be able to refer your for counselling. Talking to someone who is trained listen can help you through a difficult time. They can also show you strategies to deal with problem situations and help you to increase your self esteem. Along side this you can benefit from complementary therapies. Choose a therapy you can enjoy and be pampered. Take time out for yourself. A good therapy can help you relax and begin to feel better about yourself. If you can afford to have a regular treatment you will appreciate it more as the weeks go by, you will relax more fully and the benefits will begin to last longer. A good therapist will also be encouraging and will congratulate each stage of your recovery.
cleaned the whole house as you intended but you have cleaned the kitchen and the bathroom and tomorrow is a whole new day not yet started. Give yourself a treat. Treats need not be expensive. Your treat can be something simple that you enjoy like a walk in the park, or a luxurious bubble bath. Try to give yourself a treat every day. Look after your body. Sometimes we can be depressed about being overweight, so try to change what you eat. Eat more vegetables and fruit instead of cake and biscuits. Try to avoid fried foods. Try to cook meals from scratch and avoid too many take-away meals. Even if your weight loss seems slow enjoy the boost that eating well can give you. It may not be the right time for you to give up smoking but be aware how many cigarettes you smoke each day and maybe try to cut out one or two each day. Be aware how much alcohol you are drinking and don’t rely on a drink to ‘make you feel better’. Unfortunately, in the long run alcohol does not make you feel better and can damage your health. Be as active as you can and improve your fitness. Activity can help you to feel better about yourself. A new activity can be fun and make you feel as if you have achieved something. It can also lead to making new friends and is something to look forward to. You can also change things by having a makeover or a new haircut. We have all watched shows like Trinny and Suzanna and seen what an impression a new haircut, new style of clothes and so on can make. So try it for yourself. Take a trusted friend out shopping and ask them for their honest opinion as you try on a new outfit. There are so many positive things to do. You may not feel like doing all of them and even doing one may be a huge effort but, you know, even making a very small change can make a huge difference. Help yourself to feel better but do it one small step at a time. You will be amazed how things can change. Written by Maria Nortcliffe MAR. MICHT
When you are in the grip of depression it is difficult to see a way out, but there are ways of changing things, even though it may only be slight, that may help. Sometimes we feel bad one week and the next things don’t seem quite so bad even though nothing has changed. What may have changed is that you simply see things in a different way. So what can you do to bring this change about? During a bout of depression you sometimes don’t realise how negative you can be. One trick is to try to find something that has happened during the day about which you can be positive. Try being thankful for simple things. It could be something like ‘the sun shone today’ or ‘I enjoyed my dinner today’ or ‘I have a wonderful husband, or wife’ or ‘it was nice to see the grandchildren today. Once you realise that there are things to be thankful for, you find other things because positive feelings attract more positive feelings.

Wil green be the new black? Green might be needed after all the summer excitement of the Jubilee and Olympics. It conveys a sense of calm and reassurance and when wearing green, you show creativity and imagination. You will need to choose your GREENS carefully to make it work successfully. If you are LIGHT (light blonde hair and pale eyes) keep your greens as light as possible; wear on their own or mix with other shades including light aquas and turquoises. If you are DEEP (dark hair, dark eyes) you can wear the darkest green from bottle to pine, and olive too; you can mix any shades of your palette. If you are WARM (think red head, freckles) greens are made for you as long as you keep to those with yellow undertones. If you are COOL (that’s you if your hair is salt-and-pepper, silver or ashy blonde); your greens will be blue-based like spruce or pine. If you are CLEAR, you will have dark hair and bright jewel-like eyes and will look fabulous in all the teals, duckeggs and turquoises If none of the categories above are you, you may well be a SOFT (highlighted hair, muted eye) and you will want to wear your greens tone-on-tone and blended.
Until next month.....

✷ Ever wondered where the tradition of “Penny for the Guy”comes from? (or for want of a better word begging) Well it originates from this gruesome old English poem written in the days when these sort of things were acceptable: Guy, Guy; Stick him up on high; Hang him on a lamp post and leave him there to die; You, all, will never grow fat .....If you don’t put a penny in the old Guy’s hat! Music Review Gallows - Gallows Punk’s not dead – and neither are Gallows. First things first: are they the same band? No, of course not. When Frank Carter left Gallows to concentrate on being one half of Pure Love, the Watford punks were relieved of an iconic frontman who, despite his love/hate relationship with the limelight, never lost his own voice.

Wisely, the men he split from regrouped and refocused with Wade MacNeil. The 28-year-old Ontario native, an integral part of Canadian post-hardcore trailblazers Alexisonfire for a decade, arrives as a friend and flecked with the kind of tattoos you don’t acquire without knowing your punk rock. It only takes two songs for the blood-twisting riffs of old to re-emerge on Everybody Loves You (When You’re Dead), which is followed by MacNeil spinning a web and a punk rock cliché on its head with Last June, a broadside at the treatment G20 protesters received in Toronto in 2010. The latter’s one of their best songs to date, and one they couldn’t have written without him. The avoidance of the ‘everything sucks’ polemic that wrote previous LP Grey Britain’s lyrics into an angry, lonely corner on occasion shouldn’t be underreported or underrated. MacNeil never stares into the abyss for too long, preferring to flick it contemptuous glances as he surfs his vocals over the likes of Outsider Art and Depravers, two more of several sinewy, white knuckle thrill rides. Tellingly, nobody ever dared write Gallows off in print and anyone wondering why now has a 32-minute explanation. This is music with a pure heart, a clean conscience and the snap of a steel-spring trap. Alistair Lawrence 2012 SEE GALLOWS LIVE IN OCTOBER:
Cinema Dredd (2012) Directed by Pete Travis The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One - a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge - a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. Grim, gritty and ultra-violent, “Dredd” reinstates the somber brutality missing from the U.K. comicbook icon’s previous screen outing, the disappointing 1995 Sylvester Stallone starrer “Judge Dredd.”

The film’s unforgiving version of Dredd is something of a cross between Christian Bale’s Batman and Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name. He’s a badass of few words and a gravelly voice. While Urban isn’t permitted to reveal much humanity behind the man (we never even get a peek at Dredd’s eyes beneath his uniform helmet, let alone his soul), he does a fine job embodying the more mythic qualities of Dredd as an upright law enforcer no lowlife would want to confront.
