My 100th Eye

We The Barnsley Eye!! Congratulations Barnsley Eye on your 100th Issue. Me and my husband have always picked up the magazine when we are in town and we have done from the very first issue in 2003. The Eye is always well written has great upbeat news stories and always makes me smile. Plus it isn’t packed full of adverts like many other free magazines out there. We should be proud to have such a magazine that is locally produced, constructively written and is giving the people of Barnsley something to read for absolutely free! Bethany and Mick Brown Congratulations on 100 editions of Barnsley Eye! What I love about the way this publication has developed is the inclusiveness of its style. From happy snaps of locals enjoying a pleasant night out in town to celebrating the restoration of St Mary’s ancient parish Church or Pinfold Steps. The approach is positive, lively and encouraging. People and places mixing home town business and pleasure with international coverage of local success: Barnsley’s beauty is definitely in the Eye of this beholder! Mel Dyke FANTASTIC... 100 editions of The Barnsley Eye! The Eye’s always been there for as long as I can remember - I remember reading it on the bus to school, on my dinners from Barnsley ollege and now I read it at work. I can never remember reading a negative story in it’s pages in almost 10 years. It’s like the town hall, the old soldier...BFC - it’s a Barnsley institution that leads the way with it’s ideas and one of the main reasons I love it is I have been in “about town” at least 3 times (lol) Long may it continue! Daz, Pogmoor, via email. I live in New Zealand and my mate posts me the Eye every month to keep me up to date on whats happening in tarn!!! Congratulations Barnsley Eye on 100 Issues from Down Under! Here’s to the next 100 Issues! Simon Gallagher, New Zealand

Eye Remember When... Myself and my friend went to Africa a few years ago to work as volunteers in a village. We took copies of the Barnsley Eye for the children to read and they absolutely loved it. The glossy pictures especially and the women in their fantastic wedding dresses were especially popular they likened the brides to princesses.

November 2008 - Issue 59

Congratulations Barnsley Eye. Not only bringing joy to the people of Barnsley but even in some rare instances - people the other side of the world! Nicola Hilton

06 Eye on Local News Gordon Smith and Royston Lifesaving Club Royston Lifesaving is a charitable club within Barnsley’s community to help more of the public learn how to save life’s undergoing water activities. The Lifesaving sessions take place at Royston Leisure Centre and is made up of three remarkable people; Margaret Goldthorpe aged 63 who runs the Royston Lifesaving club, Diana Wheeler, 60, who assists Diana with teaching and Gordon Smith aged 90. (all pictured right). Gordon Smith is an extraordinary gentleman and a significant part of Royston community. Gordon not only swims regularly and is a member of Royston Leisure Centre but he has participated and taught lifesaving in centres all over Barnsley for most of his life. He was awarded his first lifesaving medal, the RLSS Bronze medallion in 1936 which would have made him fourteen. There is a heartfelt reason behind why Gordon dedicated his entire life to this particular career. When Gordon was just a young man he suffered the heartbreaking loss of his brother and sister who both drowned in separate incidents. Martin Prest, Royston and Dearneside Leisure Centre Facility Manager said “To have Gordon’s experience and knowledge within the lifesaving club is a great pleasure. Margaret, Diana and Gordon have done an outstanding job keeping the club running for all these years and have given the community a chance to achieve some great accomplishments. All three are a great credit to the people of Barnsley and the Royal Life Saving Society UK” Gordon actually taught Royston’s current lifesaving chairwoman Margaret when she was growing up and presented Margaret with her first Gold medallion. Gordon has been with Royston Lifesaving Club since 1990. Margaret and Diana took over the running of the club in 2001 when it nearly closed down due to lack of funding . The lifesaving club has been an extremely successful aspect to Barnsley’s community. Last year nine people received a distinction which is the highest level anybody could achieve in lifesaving. Just recently Gordon, Margaret and Diana have been awarded a certificate of recognition from the RLSS, which shows the sensational amount of time, effort and dedication they have put into lifesaving. Royston Lifesaving takes place at Royston Leisure Centre on Wednesday nights from 8pm to 9:30pm. If you are interested please contact 01226 701790.

10 Eye on Hair This summer hasnt been the best weather wise but as far as sport goes its been a cracker. From the drama of the last game of the premier league season to the euro championships then the olympic and paralympic games.

This month we asked the expert Zena Claire European Educator & Colour Specialist How to ………..

This summer as been a real sports fest, and from that alot of our clientshave it seems been inspired by some of the hair styles on show. The classic short back and sides with quiffed fringe that has been popular for a while now seems to have evolved to a more edgey version.

Wear a headband A Wide Band

bob, theses bands Can get lost in wavy, or curly hair. Great for making a subtle, girly statement. The Fascinator

For a real 80’s throwback retro look, wear hair with lots of volume and curls. When wearing a wide band leave hair out at the front and place it in the middle of your head. Braid band

Great for taking all your hair away from your face. Or, for a faux fringe plait for girls in a rush…also try wrapping around a bun. The slim Alice band

Is extremely versatile and can be worn with hair up or down, creates a striking feature when worn in an up do. They suit all face shapes and are being seen more at weddings and events such as ladies day race meetings. My advice when experimenting with hair accessories is to ask an expert – take them into your salon next time you visit I ‘m sure your stylist will be more than happy to help you create different hair wardrobes- after all it’s the outfit you never remove

Zena x

Have fun experimenting Thinner bands work really well with a smooth, straight

Zena Claire Hairdressing 72 Summer Lane, Barnsley

A perfect example would be David Beckhams very short tapered and disconnected back and sides, with the hair on top heavier with a large quiff. It would seem mr Beckham is still the source of style inspiration for many people, but another seems to also be the gymnast and my sons name sake Louis Smith. His short shaven high disconnected side parting style has been requested alot, with people adding there own twist to it.this summer then as been inspirational for not only sport but fashion too.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Structures new texture spray. This is a great blowdrying spray which contains sea salt. This is the perfect aid for creating longer quiffed styles such as mr Beckhams. The sea salt contained in the spray once dryed into the hair gives great hold so you require less styling product to achieve your look.

Karl Smith mens grooming would like to congratulate the Barnsley eye team on their 100th issue.

Great job guys.

12 Eye on Health Radiotherapy Awareness Day

Happy 100 Eye Issues!!! Well happy anniversary. To celebrate I thought about finding 100 tips for health. I did manage to find several lists but really there was far too much to include in this space so I tried to pick out some of the things I consider important enough to include in a list of healthy living notes. I hope you might find these points useful 1 Eating Eat regularly to maintain blood sugar levels don’t miss breakfast. Eat fresh and home-cooked food as much as possible. Vary your diet so that you don’t become bored with what you eat. Eat when you are and hungry stop when you have had just enough. Eat fruit and vegetables instead of sugary snacks. 2 Drinking Drink plenty of water. Drink a glass of hot water with the juice of half a lemon each morning t cleanse and energise the system. Drink coffee only occasionally, caffeine depletes calcium in the body. Avoid alcohol it’s a depressant that affects the nervous system and is bad for the liver. Avoid fizzy drinks as they can also deplete calcium levels. 3 Sleeping On average we need to sleep for about 8 hours per night. Make your bedroom a peaceful place for sleeping, not watching TV or using the computer. Before going to bed do something to help you relax, play music, read, don’t watch stimulating TV programmes. Have a warm bath and a warm milky drink. Don’t eat a heavy meal before going to bed.

Radiotherapy is an important and effective treatment for many types of cancer and is sometimes used to treat other diseases. It reduces the risk of the disease returning in the treated area and can provide relief of cancer symptoms. There is very low public awareness of what radiotherapy is and many ill conceived ideas and myths surrounding it. As part of a National program aiming to raise awareness of radiotherapy, the Mobile Cancer Information Unit will be in Barnsley town centre on Wednesday September 26th between 9.30am and 4.00pm. Qualified radiographers from the radiotherapy department at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield will be available to answer any questions and provide information about radiotherapy and the treatment of cancer with radiotherapy. Weston Park Hospital provides a radiotherapy service to patients from Sheffield and the surrounding region including Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop, Retford, Rotherham, Mexborough and Chesterfield. Someone from the Cancer Support Centre in Sheffield will be there as well to give information about the services they provide for cancer patients in the region.

4 Exercise Stretch when you wake up. Move your body in a way that you enjoy every day. Choose exercise that works your body and your mind. Park away from the shops, or work so that you add exercise to your daily journey. Choose exercise that opens and lengthens your body rather than repetitive movements that contract and constrict your muscles. 5 Socialising Enjoy meeting friends and relatives and relax. Get involved in your community in some way – have a reason to get up in the morning that’s bigger than just you and your family. Move toward self-love and give attention often to your relationship with yourself. Minimise or remove completely toxic relationships from your life and mind. Make movement part of your relationship – a daily walk with your partner deepens your connection and strengthens your body. 6 Relaxation However busy you are make time for you, time out. Remind yourself of some of the things you used to do and begin to enjoy them again. Learn a new skill or hobby. Choose to have a massage or other complementary therapy regularly because it feels good and can boost the immune system. Learn to live in the moment and try not to be continually rushing towards the next thing. 7 Mental health Learn how to breathe correctly, using your entire body for more energy, focus and clarity of thought. Be in nature as much as possible – it reminds us of what’s really important. Do less, live more – we are not here on earth to become more and more efficient. Laugh, as much, as loudly and as often as you can. Cry when you need to, it releases stress. Sing, as often as you can, it feeds your heart, soul, mind and body. These only scratch the surface of things that could change your life for the better. And wouldn’t we all be perfect if we could put them into practice every day!!

The aims of the day will be to: I think there is just one main point to remember over all :

Raise public awareness of radiotherapy Dispel the myths surrounding radiotherapy.

Everything in moderation and that includes moderation Written by Maria Nortcliffe MAR. MICHT

Showcase the past success and future potential of radiotherapy treatment. Reduce fear and demonstrate its power to cure as well as alleviate cancer symptoms. Improve the perception of radiotherapy as a modern cancer treatment. 14 Eye on Style Mens September Style The New Faves for Autumn Have you just got into your shorts for our short summer? Well now is the time to be thinking about what to do with your autumn / winter wardrobe.

Following a very British summer, Autumn 2012 at M&S debuts with a collection referencing the modern heritage mood of the season. 2012 at M&S debuts with a collection based on the great outdoors. Designed with luxurious layering, fine detailing and structured shapes in mind, styles take inspiration from the rugged outdoor look and classic wardrobe essentials to create an autumnal wardrobe bursting with quintessential British style.

What can you expect to see coming into the shops?

Pattern power Taking the feminine summer prints a step further, we can expect winter florals in either single stems or all over bouquets. These are quite powerful prints, with strong colours and luxe fabrics. Also moving into autumn are the eye popping opticals in bold geometrics and optical illusions working in repeat patterns. When choosing which print will work for you, think about body shape; Curvy patterns work with curvy bodies, straight or geometric patterns work with angular or straighter body shapes.

Oversize Big is beautiful! Cocoon coats,

quilted jackets, billowing trousers and skirts. Shoulders are dropped and lengths of coats and skirts are longer than previous seasons. How to wear: Contrast the volume with a slim line item, so a cocoon coat with slim trousers.

Layering and colour Lots of skirts over trousers (or leggings) or double layer items. These are really easy to wear and make matching colour to pattern a doddle. Colours to watch out for this season – purple (so underrated and a personal fave!), berry, red and teal (so good, anyone can wear it!) Can you face bringing the autumn / winter wardrobe out of storage?! Until next month.....

THE BARNSLEY EYE RESTAURANT AWARDS Here in Barnsley we have some fantastic restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. The Barnsley Eye have teamed up with local businesman Paul Hoyle of Road to launch this award. The prize for the overall winner will be a prestegious engraved plaque plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine. You may remember Paul as “Party Paul” from Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me. Paul will be reveiwing restaurants around Barnsley and scoring them on specific criterior. This month Paul was in Cawthorne.

10

Beatson House Restaurant, Cawthorne Tucked away in the small village of Cawthorne is the Beatson House Restaurant. A typically old English building full of charm and character. This restaurant has been run in the same family now for 20 years and they are still very hands on and have not lost a bit of their enthusiasm or passion and that is not easy in this current climate. There are not many of these lovely little places around I don’t think. We got a warm welcome to this lovely, not huge restaurant in the village of Cawthorne and I could tell straight away that it was a very popular place to be and I don’t think the customers where all local some had travelled. I soon saw why, it has the feel of a converted old Victorian house and you are sat having your meal in the old high ceiling front room and it works… The menu is changed frequently and all the produce is locally sourced. On the menu this night were things like dressed Whitby crab, a tin pot of muscles in their special sauce, venison with roasted shallots, and four hour slow cooked belly pork. I hope this is not taken of the menu EVER it was amazing I could explain how the pork was split into three decks and how crispy the crackling was but I won’t, just go and try it for yourself. We then had a fondue to share sounds very old fashioned but it was not it was fun with different things like kiwi fruit, marshmallow, strawberries to stab with the funky folk and get in the melted chocolate. I do not usually do desserts as you know from “come dine with me” but if I had have done this desert I might have beat our Milly Johnson. We then sat down and had a few drinks with owners Andy and Anita, it looked to us that they do this with most their customers, which is a nice touch very informal. When I say drinks I mean Boozy Infusion which is a drink that Andy makes himself. Boozy Infusion Apple Crumble and Black Forest Gateau. I still can not get my head around how he makes these drinks actually taste of apple crumble, black forest gateau just two of many of his flavours. Its pure magic!!!! Beaston house is a MUST not a maybe treat the Mrs, surprise the husband get it booked tell them Party Paul sent you.....10 out of blooming 10, let me tell you.

Would you like Party Paul to visit your Restaurant?

THIS MONTHS WINNER

The prize for the overall winner is a prestegious engraved plaque for your esbalishment (like the one right) plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine.

Telephone 01226 713000 to arrange a visit Come dine with me is coming back to Barnsley. We have heard rumours about who is on the show but trust us.....you won’t be dissapointed. Just like last time it will feature straight talking Barnsley folk. Up for a laugh and no messing.

Cinema BOMfest will be in its eighth year this year and from its humble beginnings in 2005, this event has defied all odds and become Yorkshire’s most cutting edge supporter of original unsigned artists. Unfortunately the festival was unable to go ahead on the original date in July but the management have chosen the Summer / Autumn equinox as the rescheduled date which lands on Saturday 22nd September. Tickets and camping bookings for 28th July will be valid on 22nd September. As early as 2009, BOMfest was recognised by the Telegraph newspaper as one of the top 100 events of that year, whilst still only hosting four stages and in the past two years, and after securing what now seems to be a home for BOMfest at Worsbrough mill and country park, the event has evolved into an “all weekend” camping, eight stage spectacular whilst still keeping loyal to its spirit and ethos. This years chosen artists have been selected from over 1000 applicants and many hours of checking out live performances at “The South Sea” in Sheffield, and with the limited number of available slots on offer to performers at this years event, the artists chosen to play can rest assured that in this hard knock, labour of love industry, BOMfest has recognised their dedication and hard work.

Dredd (2012) Directed by Pete Travis The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One - a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge - a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. Grim, gritty and ultra-violent, “Dredd” reinstates the somber brutality missing from the U.K. comicbook icon’s previous screen outing, the disappointing 1995 Sylvester Stallone starrer “Judge Dredd.” The film’s unforgiving version of Dredd is something of a cross between Christian Bale’s Batman and Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name. He’s a badass of few words and a gravelly voice. While Urban isn’t permitted to reveal much humanity behind the man (we never even get a peek at Dredd’s eyes beneath his uniform helmet, let alone his soul), he does a fine job embodying the more mythic qualities of Dredd as an upright law enforcer no lowlife would want to confront.

Well Done Olivia! Your creativity inspired us to create the montage on the contents page with “100” spelt out in all the magazines we have produced.

AND FINALLY..... A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON: Our Little Purple friend and icon Purplon has been with us since about Issue 17 - He has had many guises over the years but he started life as a question mark on the quiz page and it wasn’t until about Issue 40 that he was actually given a name by our Graphic Designer and used a bit more. He was nearly called Purploid ..... but that would have just sounded plain silly :-)
