BPL FITNESS

Ask Naomi

Bircotes 500th Member

BPL Fitness Instructor Naomi Laycock, based at The Metrodome Leisure Complex answers your questions on fitness and health & wellbeing.

Bircotes Leisure Centre was please to welcome its 500th member last month. 17 year old Molly Sisson took out a £9.99 a month membership as part of the special offer the centre has with Serlby Park Academy. Molly (pictured below receiving a bouquet of flowers) lives in Worksop and travels to Bircotes to attend. She said “ I like the facilities and the site is bigger and is not as busy as Worksop Leisure Centre plus here I get to exercise with my friends”.

Q: “I’ve heard the treadmill is the best cardio machine for burning calories, is this true?” Sally - Cudworth “The amount of calories you burn on a cardio machine depends on the intensity of your exercise. All cardio machines are designed to increase your heart rate and so the machine that allows you to achieve the highest heart rate for the longest time is the best for you. Rowers, elliptical trainers, bikes and steppers can all burn more calories than treadmills if used more intensely and as these machines are low impact they may be more appropriate for people with joint problems or injuries. Base your cardio on enjoyment and comfort, there is no need to slave away on equipment you hate. Also take into consideration that it is not just the amount of calories you burn during your workout that is important. Post exercise the body’s metabolism is raised meaning more calories are burnt whilst we recover, resistance training increases this after burn affect and therefore resistance training is just as important as cardio for weight loss.” NL Q: “I’m thinking of joining a Zumba class but I’m worried I’ll do it wrong as I haven’t done any sort of dancing since I was very young. I’m 42”. Jane - Darton “As long as you’re moving and keeping your heart rate up, you’re doing it right! Zumba is designed to be fun and easy to do, emphasizing a party atmosphere with no wrong moves. And as for not doing any dancing since you were young - it doesn’t matter! Zumba instructors like myself are trained to teach to all levels of students. There are six different types of Zumba classes. For instance, Zumba Gold is a class that offers less intense, lower impact moves and more modifications there’s also Aqua Zumba, which is a water-based workout. Of course all instructors have their own unique workout styles, so lots of classes are different so it’s important to try out a few in your area to find one that fits with you. Most of the BPL sites have Zumba classes and personally I think Zumba feels like a big dance party and not a workout as such. The music, routines, and overall exhilarating feel of the classes are fun, so people stick with it and bring their friends. Students also see results, such as weight loss, increased muscle tone, improved coordination, and a more healthy and positive attitude. The great thing about Zumba is an intense cardio workout, so it can help a person lose weight as well as to improve overall body tone. Proper diet and nutrition is also an important part of any weight loss program — many Zumba teachers have said that “you can’t out dance a bad diet!” NL

Zumba at Dearneside Dearneside Leisure Centre has introduced a new Zumba class that really has started to take off. The class which runs 6pm - 7pm on Monday evenings is proving to be a hit with the locals. Instructor Libby Hibberd said “The class is building weekly and the girls who are attending are progressing really well and above all, are having a great time learning the routines”.

Do you have a fitness question you’d like answering? Email your questions to naomi.laycock@bpl.org.uk Some of the girls enjoying the Zumba class at Dearneside Leisure Centre

And it’s not just Dearneside members who are benefiting from Zumba. Hoyland Leisure Centre is also benefitting from the craze which involves classes featuring Latin and international music combined with a heart-pumping cardio workout that’s easy to follow and fun to do.

Hoyland also boasts Aqua Zumba, which is a water-based workout and is one of only 3 leisure centres in the North of England chosen to do this. Visit Zumba.com to learn about all types of Zumba classes with fun tips and techniques.

BPL FITNESS

Bassetlaw Triathlon Club Mark Elliott Column: A brand new Sports Club has been created in the District via the staging of some “Come & Try It Triathlon sessions” as part of the Bassetlaw Games. These six taster sessions were run in conjunction with British Triathlon, the Sports UK Governing Body.

ROAD TO RECOVERY We all try to stay fit and healthy but the simple fact is, injuries happen even to the best of us, especially if you play a contact sport like football, rugby or boxing and martial arts in your free time.

Recovering from an injury can be a long and difficult road depending on the type of injury you have suffered. A sprained ankle may be painful and leave you unable to hit the gym for a while, but things like torn muscles, strained ligaments or torn ligaments can lead to further problems later in life if you don’t look after yourself while in recovery.

The Bassetlaw Triathlon Club had its first session on Saturday 21st January with 17 members of the public attending the session at Worksop Leisure Centre. Four people have already come forward volunteering to be committee members and the club has now been registered with the sport’s governing body “Triathlon England.” With more people already showing an interest in the club and in the sport of Triathlon this new venture for Bassetlaw seems to be developing at a real pace. The driving force behind Bassetlaw’s newest sports Club are Rob Brewin, Duty Manager at Worksop Leisure Centre and Andrew Thompson, Chief Coach at Worksop Dolphins Swimming Club.

The best advice is to always follow the instructions of your doctor or a trained health professional. If they say no exercise for a few months then that is exactly the best thing to do. But what about when you can exercise again? People tend to try and push themselves to make up for lost time or go straight into their usual workout routine. The results can be a further set back as your relapse and the old injury reoccurs. When returning to the gym you need to consider the nature of your injury. If you had a shoulder injury you shouldn’t go straight to lifting heavy weights to strengthen it. If you have had an ankle or knee injury then pounding out the miles on the treadmill could aggravate it further.

Sessions are held at Worksop Leisure Centre on Saturday Mornings at 8:30 – 10.00 am with swimming coaching provided. The clubs future plans are to cover the three Triathlon disciplines once a week. The club is open to anybody wanting to have a go. There is a mix of experience from complete novices to those who have already competed and the age range is equally varied. The next steps for the Bassetlaw Tri Club is to forge links with other clubs in the associated disciplines of running and cycling. Support has already been offered from the Worksop Harriers and Retford Wheelers Cycling Club.

Contact Andrew Thompson - andrew86@btinternet.com or Rob Brewin - Rob.Brewin@bpl.org.uk Tony Wright – Tony.Wright@bassetlaw.gov.uk

www.publicdomainpictures.net

Rob Brewin said “The Bassetlaw Tri Club has been met with such enthusiasm; the response from the Bassetlaw community has been great with people of all ages and abilities showing interest. We will always look at initiatives that we can help launch for people in Bassetlaw as there is clearly the demand for such clubs and activities”

You need to start off with low impact exercises and there is none better than swimming. Swimming allows you to work the affected area with very minimal impact. The water supports your weight, taking strain away from the recovering area. This helps to build strength in the recovering area and to help you build back the base fitness that you may have lost after a spell on the sidelines. Many athletes use swimming to aid in recovery and training. Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko actually trains in a pool. Due to his age and the heavy pounding his joints has taken, he shuns high impact exercises like running and does all of his aerobic work outs in water. If it is good enough for a world champion then it is certainly good enough to get you back in shape. After you have strengthened the recovery area start small, scaling back your usual routine in the gym. This way you can test the limit of the recovery area with little risk of relapse. Just remember to always heed the doctor’s advice.

BPL SWIMMING

Eve achieves 5 Metres Eve Richardson achieved her 5 Metre Swim Badge last month at Dearneside Leisure Centre aged just 2 years old. Eve (pictured below with her mum and Swimming Instructor Carol Haigh) attends the “Little Nippers” swimming classes at Dearneside Leisure Centre and has, according to her swimming teacher Carol Haigh, shown great promise in the swimming pool. Carol said “ Swimming 5 Metres at only 2 years old is an exceptional achievement. Well done to Eve for all of her hard work.”

England Team for Joe Joe Seage is a perfect example how the Bassetlaw swimming pathway is one of the best in the country and caters for all swimmers. Joe started to swim at the age of 6 with the SANDS club which is a disability swimming club run by the Bassetlaw Sport Development Team. His love for the water and natural talent meant he soon progressed in mainstream swimming lessons in the BPL Learn to Swim Programme at Retford Leisure Centre. With the guidance of the experienced teachers that teach on the programme Joe progressed through the National Teaching Plan Stages learning all the necessary Aquatic skills to move into an Aquatic Club. After stage 7 of the NTP Joe attend Retford Swimming Club while still completing Stages 8-12 in the learn to swim programme, at the same time gaining competitive swimming experience with the local club. Joe’s fast development and enthusiasm for the sport was soon picked up by the County Swim Team Nova Centurion, he was selected for the Disability Squad. At the age of 11 years old Joe won the East Midland Regional Championships and was selected to train with the Nova Centurion Development Squads who train at Retford and Worksop Leisure Centres up to 9 session a week which includes sessions starting at 5.30am. Recently Joe competed in the National Disability Championships where he won Gold in 50m Front Crawl, Silver in 100m Front Crawl and Bronze in 50m Backstroke which also secured his sport on the English Talent Disability Development Team.

Calypso Cove Opens

Joe (pictured below) will be very busy during 2012 competing as a 12 year old in the Regional events and then the National Championships in March, also April will see Joe compete in his first international meet. If you want to start your swimming career do not delay and sign up today at one of the BPL Learn to Swim Schemes.

Calypso Cove opened last month at The Metrodome Leisure Complex in time for the half term holidays! Hundreds of children were able to explore the Sunken Galleon, brave Skull Falls and take on Terror Torrent, one of the fastest indoor water slides in the UK before retreating to The Hideout on poolside to re-fuel and relax! Scores of youngsters made the most of the half-term break to try out the new facilities. Liam Dixon from Halifax was staying at his grandparents for the half term holidays, said: “It looks loads better. I liked the skull waterfall and the slides are better and faster than before. I wish we had something like this in Halifax. ” For more information on Calypso cove including prices and opening times visit www.bpl.org.uk

The sky was the limit last month as a new ceiling at Royston Leisure Centre saw casual swimming rise to new heights! With the ceiling work completed, Royston benefited from the Calypso Cove water park refurbishment as customers started using alternative facilities whilst the Metrodome upgrade was taking place. The annual influx has been taking advantage of the January promotion, some signing up just on the basis of planning to swim more often. New members to Royston include people of all ages with many taking advantage of the MAXx Family membership and MAXx membership for under 16s.

Children of St Dominics Primary School celebrated at Royston Leisure Centre as they finished their swimming lessons last month. Over 90% of the class passed which is a fantastic achievement. As ever BPL swimming legend Derek the Dolphin (pictured right) was there to present certificates and to give the children some fun swimming tips. Royston Leisure Centre holds Barnsley Swim club on Tuesday evenings and one of their members Chloe Selman has been picked to attend the Olympic trials in London doing the 200 metre front crawl. We also offer 3 and 12-month memberships, plus discounted Leisure Passes. For more information on the Exercise On Referral Programme please contact the Exercise Co-ordinator on 01909 533480.

Some quotes from recent referrals. Robin Shaw: “Enjoyable and beneficial.” Jackie Play ford: “Gives you the incentive to exercise.” Michael Stronack: “Jane makes exercising fun and not a chore.” June Hall: “Friendly and improving your health at the same time.” Hilary Bennett: “Varied programme of exercise to keep you motivated.”

The Exercise Referral Scheme has developed links with the Emergency Department at Barnsley Hospital to allow staff to recommend patients for referral into the Exercise Referral Scheme. Dr James Griffiths, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Barnsley Hospital, said “The Emergency Department is excited at the prospect of recommending patients to the Exercise Referral Scheme. Every day we see many patients who would benefit from increasing their physical activity but we have previously been unable to directly address this issue. As healthcare professionals, we are all aware of the advantages of increased physical activity for a wide range of conditions such as musculoskeletal problems and depression. We are hoping to be able to inform patients of this service so they can gain benefit from it as soon as possible”. Mark Goodhead, Co-ordinator of the Exercise Referral Scheme states “I am delighted that we have formed links with the Emergency Department at Barnsley Hospital. Exercise should be a part of everyone’s daily routine and can help manage and prevent many medical conditions. It is very gratifying that the Emergency Department is so proactive in promoting the health benefits of our service to patients”.

Case study I was diagnosed with depression in 2004 aged 48. I would be in bed for entire days with the exception of 2-3 hours where I would rise just to feed. I felt extremely down and alone and almost suicidal on occasions. These feelings continued for months at which point I went to see my GP who prescribed me anti-depressants. The medication did help my mood elevate. At a later appointment my GP told me about the Exercise Referral Scheme and referred me into the service. I found exercise in general helped me not just physically but mentally as well. I found it hard to adjust to this lifestyle because I was not in very good physical health and found myself to be struggling and aching. It was very hard to get to the Metrodome, this was due to the fact I had not been outside in a long time and the thought of using public transport was extremely daunting. Despite all these negative factors I was facing it only took 5 or 6 sessions for me to feel a massive improvement and my mood elevated. I felt and appeared more confident and my energy levels were far greater than ever before. It was hard work but the long term benefit was worth all the effort. As well as improving my psychological wellbeing I also achieved other health benefits. For example I lost half a stone in weight and a couple of inches from my waist which was an extra bonus. The ERS opened up the possibility I would not have been able to reach on my own and the idea of getting out of the house seemed more appealing than I once thought. Meeting new people in the centre was another added bonus. If I don’t exercise I have to increase my medication, my mood starts to slide back down to what it was and I start to get depressed again. I am looking forward to continuing with my exercise regime and find other therapies to help me feel like I used to.

The Marauders topped the table only just beating fellow high flyers Boom Team who between them had shared top spot all season. The Centre then held a 6 team knockout tournement and lo and behold the two teams to reach the final were.... Boom Team and Mapplewell Marauders! The teams were so evenly matched that the game ended in a draw and went to a penalty shootout in which Mapplewell (right) won due to the heroics of their goalkeeper Col Chapman. BPL’s Tom Ramsay who organises the League said “This seasons League has been fantastic. We’ve registered more teams than ever and it is really starting to grow. More importantly it has also been played in the right spirit”.

Sportivate will capture the excitement of sport and the London 2012 Games by providing opportunities for teenagers and young adults (aged 14-25) to receive coaching in a sport of their choice and guide them into regular participation within their community. The Sportivate programme in South Yorkshire will be led by South Yorkshire Sport and applications were accepted from December 2011. In conjunction with this a series of events were held to help our partners understand more about the national programme and more importantly the local process for accessing the funding available for projects. The funding was open to any organisation that could offer a viable sports project within the criteria which includes demonstrating evidence of need. BPL put forward their application again for year 2 as they did for year 1 and has been successful in obtaining funding for 4 projects. The decision was taken by the South Yorkshire Sportivate Technical Panel and Sport England and as a result these projects now form part South Yorkshire Sportivate Year 2 delivery plan. (1st April – 30th Sept 2012) For the Energise programme, BPL will be offering state of the art innovations to support people in their physical activity. Subsidised Zumbatomic sessions will also be offered at local centres, specifically for 14 and 15 year olds, and linked to MAXx membership offers.

Olympic hopeful Archer Amy Oliver (above) took part in a regional Archery Tournament at Dearneside Leisure Centre last month.

More than 40 competitors took part in this years event, which also included an event for disabled people.Tournament Organisers Albert Keddy and John Seddon said, “The event was a huge success with over 40 competitors from North East Region taking part. The standard of shooting was very high, the winners of all categories received medals for their achievements”. A Hearty Welcome for MAXx Members to Calypso Cove! With the brand new Calypso Cove waterpark now open at the Metrodome Leisure Complex, MAXx members can enjoy unlimited access to all public swim sessions as well as specified times for free bowling at Metrodome Bowling. This makes MAXx membership really great value for money and fantastic fun for all!

One of the latest families to sign up is the Walls family from Mapplewell. Mum and Dad Lizzy and Alex were looking to join a gym and get fit themselves, but also wanted some activities suitable for their two children Cameron (8) and Niamh (6).

They were recommended the MAXx Family membership which sounded perfect as Mum and Dad could access the gym during lunch hours and after work, as there were no peak times, while the kids could enjoy a wide range of activities for themselves including the bowling and swimming. With everything being included in the price they are able to keep themselves fit, keep the children entertained with some valuable family time and even make a significant financial saving! Dad Alex says “The newly refurbished fitness suite at the Metrodome is great, we adults also use the competition pool for serious lane swimming.” For the kids, the best thing about MAXx membership is definitely Calypso Cove. Cameron explains “I like Terror Torrent because it’s fast and really scary, but my sister loves Kraken because you can choose your own music on the slide!” Mum Lizzy summed it up when she said “We are really impressed with MAXx membership, especially the price as the difficult financial times have meant that we have to be more careful with money, but we have actually saved money on the activities that we wanted to do, both as individuals and as a family! I will be recommending it to all my friends with children.” For more information on MAXx membership for families & children, please visit our website at www.bpl.org.uk/maxx or call 01226 327428

BPL GOLF

Golf Insanity Football Hillies Golf Course by Stuart Betteridge PGA Golf Professional

So, you`re struggling with your golf game, the ball travels with an unnerving slice, seemingly, with a vengeful mind of its own as it scurries underneath the nearest bush, adding more torment to your already fragile golfing ego.

Hillies Golf Course in Wombwell have an open day planned on the 7th and 8th of April to showcase their new par 32 course. The course now has a new layout and configuration of holes and can now hold Powerplay events which is a new form of Golf played over 9 holes and endorsed by top professionals.

Then just to compound the frustration, as you retrieve your ball along with a couple of thorns from your arm, your playing partner mutters those immortal words of wisdom, “not to worry, just enjoy yourself.” As the ball is dropped back into play from an extended and now slightly sore arm, you force a polite smile through gritted teeth and swish your way onto another double bogey. What he should have said is “not to worry there is always the 19th hole” where you can have a couple of beers, tell everyone how unlucky you have been and join in the applause as the junior section walk away with all the silverware again. Einstein once wrote that to keep on repeating the same pattern and to expect different results is insane. Is that not what the majority of golfers do week in, week out though? Turning up on the first tee full of expectation` today is the day` but with the same swing, the same thoughts and very often hitting into the same bush!! All expectations are dashed fairly quickly as once again you attempt to rise above the double bogies, the penalty drops and the wise cracking playing partners, as you try to enjoy yourself with a score that more reflects the summer temperature in Tenerife. If this sounds all too familiar, you could well be a fully paid up member of the society for the golfing insane!! However don’t despair there is a solution and it is cheaper and more fun than an appointment with the local psychologist. Golf lessons are the cure to this merry go round of struggling golf. This means a visit to your golf professional, no couch involved, just lots of quality information and training to aid your graduation from the golfing insane. With some quality practice thrown in, you could transform your game and be on the receiving end of the applause, heading off with the silver ware and smiling back at some sulking juniors. To find out how to graduate please call Stuart Betteridge PGA Golf Professional Kilton Forest Golf Course TEL; 01909 486563 Make a Change and see how good your golf can be!

Hillies will be holding a Powerplay event in June.To find out more about Powerplay as endorsed by Graeme McDowell and other professional golfers, please visit

Kilton Forest Golf Barnsley Premier Leisure are certainly not letting the grass at Kilton Forest Golf Course grow under their feet as they press forward with golf course improvement initiatives this year. Golfers of all abilities using Kilton this season will be getting added value as they benefit from development initiated by BPL in conjunction with the Bassetlaw Ground Maintenance Team. (pictured below).

This initiative has seen over 3000 new trees planted alongside various fairways which will not only aesthetically enhance the look of the golf course, it will mean that golfers will soon have to be hitting their golf balls a little straighter than perhaps they have been used to!! Greens are being extended and reshaped and the paths to the teeing areas are to be refurbished. Along with some re mounding of green surrounds, a new tee on the fourth hole is to be constructed to compliment what is already a terrific par three. Stuart Betteridge the club professional at Kilton for over twelve years said “Barnsley Premier Leisure have really made a difference to our golf course facility in a short period of time. These developments are so welcome and show how much BPL are committed to making our golf course the best it can be. Its all positive news and our golfers should be excited for the future.

Anyone interested in Season Tickets or Society bookings and pay & play at Kilton Forest should direct their enquiries to Stuart in the professional shop Tel; 01909486563.

We Love BPL

Dan Jarvis MP for Barnsley Central, Shadow Minister for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, recently visited the Barnsley Metrodome Leisure Complex for a tour with the BPL Chair, Dr David Hicks, and Tim Wilson, CEO of BPL. Dan commented “The Barnsley Metrodome Leisure Complex is a fantastic local attraction has been created by BPL, not only for Barnsley but for the whole region. The new Calypso Cove is a great place to visit for families and with the Metrodome Bowling also on site it’s a great family day out.

The Passion never stops for BPL for Rob and Phill..

BPL enables people to engage in healthier lifestyles and enjoy quality leisure time. It has also increased employment opportunities in the town with the addition of the Metrodome Bowling and the expansion of its fitness suite to 120 stations.

Thanks to Rob Debenham and Phill Richardson (Assistant Operations Managers at Worksop Leisure Centre) who sent us this picture while they were on the road to to support Sheffield Wednesday (the Owls) in the FA Cup 4th Round v Blackpool.

It’s also great to see a Barnsley company like BPL taking its services outside the area with their sites in Bassetlaw, Doncaster and Wakefield.”

Bircotes Sports Awards Around 300 local people attended the second annual Junior Sports Awards which took place in December.

25 Years and Counting Sue Edwards started at Royston Leisure Centre aged 32. She is a swimming teacher and a leisure attendant and this year celebrates 25 years of service to BPL. Sue who turns 60 next year has enjoyed every minute of her time at Royston and is a friendly face to most, if not all, of the members. Sue has a cat called Poppy and is very fond of shoes so much so her colleagues refer to her as a “shoeahollic”. She loves reading and walking and on the 29th February 2012 (leap year) she asked her partner asked to marry her ........and he said yes!!!

Congratulations to them both from all at BPL! Children who attend any coached course are nominated by their instructor or teacher with the winner being selected by a panel of judges. The sports courses include swimming lessons, Tadpoles, Rookie Lifeguard, football coaching, gymnastics, pre school gymnastics, trampolining, badminton, squash and karate. The awards ceremony was organised and hosted by Erica Willis who is the swimming lesson co-ordinator at the centre and consisted a demonstration by the Karate club and trampolining/gymnastics group. The awards ceremony then followed and finished with a visit from Father Christmas and once the formalities were complete a celebratory disco and refreshments took place. All nominated children received a certificate and selection box with the winners being presented with a medal or trophy. Presentations to the winners were made by local district and town councillors June Evans, Elaine Nettleship, Bob Turner and Glenn Tolan BPL Head of Operations.

BPL PEOPLE

Team Tarn Cycle for Charity Jack at The Cove Four BPL employees will be cycling from John O’Groats in Scotland to Barnsley during the August Bank Holiday to raise money for charity.

Glenn Tolan (Head of Operations), Dave Redfern (Leisure Operations Manager), Michael Hirst (Trading Manager) and Dave Batch (Leisure Supervisor) will be making the journey along with Jason Eyre of Wavin UK. They will be ably assisted by Ronnie Erskine (HR Manager) and Dale Healey (IT & Systems Manager) as drivers. The team named “Team Tarn” are raising money for two great local causes – Barnsley Hospice and Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield. These charities have been chosen as it was agreed by the group that they all know someone who has been supported by these charities at some point in their lives. To help generate support for their endeavour, the team have set up Facebook and Twitter pages as well as a Just Giving page for donations. A number of celebrity Tweeters have helped raise the profile by retweeting to their own fans about the group, including Comedian Alan Carr, and self professed ‘Minstrel of Tarn” Mike Collins who offered to write a song especially for the team! The team will be tweeting throughout their training and the ride itself so anyone who has sponsored them can keep up to date with their progress. Calypso Cove at the Metrodome Leisure Complex had its official opening on Friday the 9th of March showing selected VIP guests what the regions newest attraction had to offer. Jack Sparrow and his motley crew entertained the 800 strong VIP crowd both inside and outside the venue with stilt walking, unicycling and diablo juggling. Along with Sparrow’s convoy, Simon Hirst from Capital FM literally hit the decks to provide the musical entertainment for the guests. Simon has a keen interest in Calypso Cove with him being a Barnsley lad and visiting the Metrodome since he was a child. One of the main highlights was the Jack Sparrow look a-like who swaggered round the Metrodome greeting the guests with numerous pirate puns and swashbuckling stories. After speaking with the guests Jack could be found testing out the other facilities that the Metrodome had to offer, much to the surprise of the other Metrodome customers, especially when he hit the gym and the bowling alley. The moment of the night belonged to ten year old Nathan Padgett. Nathan (pictured above) who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia, won a competition with local website We Are Barnsley and received a VIP tour of Calypso Cove, meeting Captain Jack and Hirsty as well as enjoying all the rides and features at the waterpark. He was even treated to a sword fighting lesson from the Captain himself, right in front of BPL’s Health and Safety Guru Mick Daley! Tim Wilson, Chief Executive of BPL commented: “We are extremely proud of the Calypso Cove water park development, the project was an ambitious one taking four months to complete and to see everyone enjoying themselves at the official opening was the icing on the cake. We wanted to create a buzz at the event which Simon Hirst, Jack Sparrow and the drama students from Barnsley College really helped achieve. Calypso Cove really does have something for all age groups and swimming abilities. “It was wonderful to see the ‘We are Barnsley’ competition winner, Nathan Padgett having a great time at Calypso Cove and to see the smile on his face was truly a heart warming moment.” “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the guests that arrived on the day and a big thank you to everyone who continues to use Calypso Cove moving forward along with all the other facilities the Metrodome has to offer. Without your ongoing support through visiting the Metrodome, this project wouldn’t have been possible”.

BPL EVENTS

Rocketball Rocks! The Metrodome Bowling is host to Barnsley’s most glamourous student night - The Rocketball. With live music from some of Yorkshires best new bands held at Metrodome Bowling every Wednesday from 7 till 11pm The Rocketball is quickly becoming the place to be. But don’t just take our word for it here’s what some of the more recent acts to have played there had to say: “We had a good laugh! A decent turn out, a strangely good atmosphere with a good sound even with the bowlers finishing their games! A very different gig experience, but a good one!” Scarlet Sunset “We really enjoyed playing at The Rocketball the sound was surprisingly good for a venue like a bowling alley as we were expecting not to be able to hear each other think!” Young Peculiar
