Starting with informal networking then moving on to ‘table swopping’. Each person had the opportunity to showcase their business to the other businesses around the table. Further informal networking followed and then everyone enjoyed a light lunch of soup, pasta and chips. There was a very positive atmosphere within the room and everyone seemed to enjoy meeting new people in a relaxed environment. Special thanks go to the Park Inn Hotel for hosting the venue, for their teas and coffees, and their superb service. PAYE-Time’s Up From May 2010 employers who fail to pay their 2010/11 PAYE liabilities on time and in full may face penalties. Nick Skelton, partner at Doncaster-based Crozier Jones, Chartered Certified Accountants, outlines what employers need to know. Employers...the form-filling starts here If you are an employer the end of the tax year marks the start of the form-filling season! Here’s a reminder of important deadlines for sending information (and money!) to HM Revenue and Customs (“HMRC”). 19 April 2010 (22 April for electronic payments) - Interest will run on any 2009/10 PAYE, NIC, student loan and CIS deductions not paid over by this date. 19 May 2010 - Employers’ year end returns (P35 and P14s) due for submission. 31 May 2010 - Employees must be provided with their P60 (certificate of pay and tax deducted). 6 July 2010 - Submission of P11Ds and P9Ds for 2009/10 which show details of expenses paid and benefits provided to employees and directors. Employees must also be given a copy of their P11D/P9D by this date. 19 July 2010 (22 July for electronic payments) - Class 1A NIC for 2009/10 on most benefits provided to employees must be paid. Interest runs from this date on late payments.
Electronic filing All employers (regardless of the number of employees) must file their end of year returns (P35 and P14 (P60)) electronically. This is the first year that electronic filing of online forms is compulsory for smaller employers. Penalties From May 2010 HMRC may impose late payment penalties on all employers, regardless of size, who fail to make their monthly or quarterly (an option available to small employers only) PAYE payments on time. No penalty will be imposed for the first late payment but subsequent breaches may attract penalties from 1% to 4% depending on the number of late payments a year. A further penalty of 5% may be charged if any amounts are still outstanding after 6 months and then again after 12 months. If you are in any doubt about your individual position you should contact your accountant for guidance. Anybody who would like to talk to me or one of my partners can email me at nick.skelton@crozierjones.co.uk or telephone (01302) 738382.
Nick
19 October 2010 (22 October for electronic payments) - PAYE settlement agreement liabilities for 2009/10 are due, together with Class 1B NIC. Interest runs from this date on late payments.

TESTIMONIAL
Requirements: A smile and plenty of business cards!
With the general downturn in business and the budget for advertising ever decreasing it is important to select only the methods which give a good return. My choice therefore has to be Local Knowledge ‘Business & Lifestyle’. It is different to the other publications. It has many items of interest and has much more to offer the reader, this is why my investment again this month is with Local Knowledge ‘Business & Lifestyle’. Vivienne, LighterLife.

Are you wishing for a comfortable retirement?
“Then don’t rely on the State Pension” It is likely to be paid later than expected and will continue to be devalued by inflation.
In recent years the Government has repudiated its contract with tax payers by increasing the State Pension age from 65 to 68 for men and from 60 to 68 for Women as follows: The State Pension age for women born on or after 6 April 1950 will increase gradually to 65 between 2010 and 2020, so from 6 April 2020 the State Pension age will be 65 for both men and women. Between 2024 and 2046 the State Pension age will increase for both men and women. This increase will be gradual, happening over two years every decade. The current proposed changes will mean that: The State Pension age for men and women will increase from 65 to 66 between April 2024 and April 2026.The State Pension age for men and women will increase from 66 to 67 between April 2034 and April 2036.The State Pension age for men and women will increase from 67 to 68 between April 2044 and April 2046. And plans are already being discussed to increase the State retirement age to 70 and above. These increases are required due to the fact that the State Pension scheme is unaffordable. The UK worker/pensioner ratio was 2.3 national insurance contributors per pensioner in 1985 and is forecast to have fallen to 1.6 contributors per pensioner in 2025. In recent years Bernie Madoff made headlines defrauding investors via his Ponzi investment scheme. Ponzi finance schemes use money from new investors to pay off earlier investors until not enough new recruits can be found and the whole scheme collapses, with the newest investors losing everything. The State Pension is paid to retirees by current national insurance contributors. In my opinion the State Pension scheme is in the process of failing and it may well be wise for people to take appropriate steps so that they are not reliant on it. 10

Testing times for
Charities The current economic downturn has seen challenging times for business and this is having an effect on the voluntary and charitable sector. It is thought that this year will see charities experience a 30% reduction in donations from businesses and individuals. With this significant reduction in their income, charities must review their income and expenditure to ensure they can continue their essential work Things to consider are as follows; 1 – Have a detailed look at your current and projected income to identify where you believe you may have a reduction. 2 – If you have business donations speak to the businesses as soon as possible to identify whether they will be able to support you in the future. 3 – If a company can no longer provide a donation, would they be willing to provide a free or discounted service to reduce your costs? 4 – If you rely on fund raising from individual donations and events benchmark how other charities are performing. This 12
could help you prepare for an anticipated reduction. 5 – Try and build up a fundraising strategy that could focus on the following; Project your fundraising for 2-3 years. Review areas to see if you maximise certain areas, ie; events. Be prepared to put in potentially 2-3 times as much effort as in the past. Do not overestimate funding as this could seriously affect you when it doesn’t arrive. 6 – If you apply for grant funding, consider partnering with a similar organisation to strengthen future bids. 7 – Challenge your costs regularly. If you normally always get printing from one company get 3 quotes to see if you can get it cheaper. Can you share costs with other organisations to reduce the price?
8 – Get professional advice. Banks, solicitors, accountants, business advisors and government organisations are a great source of advice and professional support. The sooner you assess the potential effect, the sooner you take control and reduce it. If you would like to discuss ways to improve your charity e-mail me on: james@jcsyorkshire.co.uk or call me on 07723 096 240.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS! A woman from Doncaster has achieved a long held ambition of branching out into her own business. The new flower shop run by Marina Craig has opened in Tickhill - and business is blooming.
The shop, ‘Amorée’ is situated on the corner of Market Place and Sunderland Street in premises previously occupied by a Christian card and bookshop. The flower shop is being run by Marina and her business partner Paul Barks. Marina, who originates from Oxfordshire, has worked as a florist in her home town of Worksop for the past 11 years. She has been married to Steven for 20 years and they have 2 grown up children. Marina said “Having worked in the floristry business for a number of years I have been looking to forward to opening my own shop. I was a little nervous at first but lots of people have been into the shop and made me feel very welcome. We are able to meet floral requirements for all occasions. As well as selecting from a wide range of blooms customers have the opportunity to use the bereavement suite at the shop where they can discuss their requirements in private. We also make home visits.” Marina can be contacted on

BUSINESS In times of economic difficulty it makes sense for people to work together. We at Business & Lifestyle are playing our part to help by promoting a new business venture each month in conjunction with Success Doncaster. Success Doncaster is available to provide support and guidance to any resident of Doncaster regardless of their background. Help available ranges from support for new and existing businesses, guidance on retraining, help with finding a job and advice on financial issues for individuals and businesses.
Doncaster Motorcycles Neil and Kevin received advice on marketing and were also given advice on how to write a business plan. They were also advised on how to get a Success Doncaster grant to help towards the cost of their new venture.
Tailored advice for business start-ups The Success Doncaster programme has many contracts delivering a number of different initiatives, each one tailor made to meet your own individual needs. This month we would like to focus on Doncaster Motorcycles, a new start business that has received assistance through one of our strands - Enterprise Champions. Neil Sawbridge and Kevin Hollingsworth were both employees of Cusworth Bikes until it went into administration at the end of November 2009. With 27 years experience between them in the motorcycle industry, they felt they would make a good team working together to run their own motorcycle business. After approaching Success Doncaster, they were referred to an Enterprise Champion for up to date help and support on a number of key issues about starting a business. 16
Neil said: “The support that Success Doncaster has offered to me and Kevin has been exceptional. Without it we would not be where we are now. It has been a challenge and an experience making the move from employment to self employment but one that is gratifying and delivers its own rewards”. Doncaster Motorcycles opened in January and both Neil and Kevin hope it will be able to pick up where Cusworth Bikes has left a gap. They have both turned down the offer of alternative employment to be able to make this venture a reality and are ready to take on the challenge of opening their own business and seeing it grow. For more information on Doncaster Motorcycles, contact 01302 364311 or visit www.doncastermotorcycles.co.uk To find out how Success Doncaster can help you, contact one of our friendly advisors today by calling 01302 734554, alternatively visit our website www.successdoncaster.co.uk

GET YOUR PRESS RELEASE
NOTICED Keerti Baker’s background is over ten years in the marketing, PR, copywriting, and media relations. She has worked on a number of campaigns across various industry sectors. Picture this: You open up the local newspaper or your industry’s leading trade magazine and what do you see - your competitor’s product or service being covered. And if you’re thinking, “I want to get my company in there”, you need a quick checklist of how you can get your press release noticed. 1. Struggling for ideas or a point to start? Think of what you’ve done over the last month or so. Any new clients, products or solutions can make good stories. 2. Make sure the press release is well written. Don’t use superfluous terms. Journalists want to know the facts in a succinct manner. 3. As a general rule of thumb stick to between 200-300 words. Anything more and your reader could zone-out. Remember, the objective is to grab the attention of the person sifting through hundreds of press releases.
4. Spell-check, spell-check, spell-check. It doesn’t give a very professional image when a press release has grammatical errors or spelling mistakes. 5. Take a good photograph or invest in a photographer. Releases with pictures have a higher chance of being picked up by editors. 6. Spend some time building a good media list that is relevant to your release. For instance, if you’re a kitchen manufacturer, you might not want to blanket every single publication but instead concentrate on your industry titles. 7. All images should have a good print resolution and at least 300dpi. The image size should be no more than 1MB. You don’t want to clog-up someone’s Inbox. 8. Don’t forget to check picture captions, names of people quoted in the release and
the release date. Do check the word count after any copy changes. 9. Before emailing it out, ensure all the email addresses are in the Bcc field and it is addressed to your internal email address. 10. Finally, check all attachments and paste the release as inline text within the email. This is in case some publications block attachments. Of course, there’s more to PR than just a good press release, but it’s a very good place to start. Speak Marketing and PR Limited is based in Doncaster, South Yorkshire with local, regional and national media contacts. For more information please contact Speak Marketing and PR Limited using the email address below.

The Mousey Guide to ... Laptop Disaster Recovery What to do when.......
Replacement Laptop Screens
You spill something on your laptop:
If your laptop has suffered an accident and the screen has cracked or the image looks like a drunken spider has weaved a web across it, you will probably need your screen replacing. This is a cost effective way to save your laptop from the rubbish heap.
Turn it off immediately. Take the battery out. Open it and turn it upside down to allow the liquid to drain out of the keyboard. Leave it in that position for at least 3 days at room temperature. However, the chances are better for a full recovery if it was not a sticky drink. For example water usually does less harm than wine or sugared coffee. You drop your laptop: If it was off, don’t switch it on, although you will be sorely tempted. Call Mat & Mouse and we can inspect it for you. If it was on, back up your essential data such as documents and photographs (if it will allow you to) before switching it off. Your laptop is more likely to survive if it was switched off at the time. Therefore it is advisable to not move your laptop around too much when switched on. If your laptop or computer suddenly does not switch on any more, 9 times out of 10 we can recover your data, documents and photographs. Please get in touch for details.
22
If your laptop screen has become too dark to see, then again you will need a replacement. The best way to diagnose this is to shine a torch on the screen and look if you can see the image faintly showing in the torch light. Another good test to make (if you have access to a desktop computer) is to attach your laptop to an external screen. If the image is fine on the other screen, then you need to have your laptop screen replaced.

Compost
Corner
Welcome to Compost Corner, the Business & Lifestyle monthly gardening column
The Winter Legacy Hurrah, the bad weather is nearly all gone! However, it’s pretty much accepted that the Spring season is at least 2-3 weeks behind the normal time of year. Bulbs are now racing to catch up and everything is ‘springing into life’. Fortunately people are getting out into their gardens and cutting their grass for the first time in 2010. The weekends are now full of people cutting this and chopping that and preparing their gardens for the Great British Summer. Listen quietly on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon for the low hum of Lawnmowers.... The weather since Christmas has been the coldest for a long time and although the cold has killed off many nasty bugs and airborne diseases it has presented us with a few issues that we have not seen for some time.
Frost, Snow, Cold Wind For the past 3 months we have had extreme cold conditions for Doncaster. Many of the tender herbaceous perennials such as Penstemons have taken a battering, as well as tender shrubs such as Fuchsias. Even the shrubs that are considered to be ‘hardy’ have suffered recently. Choisyas, Hebes, and even Bamboos have struggled due to the combination of snow, frost and periods of cold wind. Branches of trees have snapped off, plants previously 26
attached to fences or trellis have become unfastened and trees or shrubs planted towards the end of 2009 may have had their roots disturbed due to the frost. My advice is to get out into the garden. Take stock of your plants and have a quick look around to see what looks sickly. Plants like people show signs of stress when they are unwell. We get coldsores and spots, and so do plants (well spots anyway!). Pay special attention to any shrubs that are not showing any new buds. Although we are a few weeks behind with plants budding you can do a little test. Take a small knife or one of your keys and scrape a small section of the branch or woody stem. Try it near the base of the plant. If it shows green the plant is ok. If you scrape it and it is just dry and brown then its probably too late! Also look out for any shrubs that have crinkled, crumpled or distorted leaves. This has been caused by long periods of cold where the water contained within the plant’s leaves has been frozen and defrosted causing the distortion. If it looks particularly unattractive then cut back the offending growth. If you leave it
eventually the new growth will cause the old growth to wither and drop off.
Snow Mould Just got a bit more space to tell you about something that I’ve not seen for a while and that’s Snow Mould. If you have small brown patches on your lawn that look a little like dog wee patches (but you haven’t got a dog) then that’s probably Snow Mould. It’s a group of fungal diseases that turn the grass brown in patches after a prolonged cold and wet spell. It looks unsightly but with a bit of work you can get it under control. Give it a light raking with a Spring Tine Rake to remove the dead grass and moss. Spike it with a Garden Fork and if it’s really bare you can spread some multi purpose compost or sand mixed with some lawn seed to help it on it’s way. If you require any information on my article this month or you need a free garden health check please contact me on: 07889 858767 or 01302 865075.

Spring is in the air... It looks like spring is finally upon us, Easter as has been and gone in a somewhat damp fashion. The daffodils are at last deciding to show their heads and the grass is looking ready for that makeover.
Hopefully this can signal the end of the need for heating for a while.
On the financial front there are big changes coming into force this month.
Remember to reset all your time controls (hopefully you have adjusted them for B.S.T.) and knock down the room stat a little.
The Boiler scrappage scheme is now gone. Hopefully you have taken advantage if you could.
As we move into summer you need to think about any repairs or upgrades you might want to do before autumn.
The “Feed In” tariffs’ (FIT’s) for the private generation of electricity are now in place making photovoltaic cells and the like a much more viable proposition with payback down to around ten years from twenty.
This is the best time to make those plans. Have you had a radiator with a small leak or a TRV that doesn’t seem to work as it should? Don’t leave these jobs until you need the system at the end of the year. You should adopt a systematic approach to maintaining your heating. Check for leaks, flush out the system if required and make sure the cleaning and rust inhibiting chemicals are ok. Boiler flue gas analysis can give a good guide as to the condition of the boiler and whether or not a service is required. As a final safeguard you should run your heating so the pump gets used once or twice a month (just for ten minutes or so) to ensure the pump does not seize during its shutdown period. On your Hot and Cold system check for dripping taps, toilet cisterns that don’t shut of fully or are constantly running small amounts of water into the pan. All these things will add up and increase your water bill. If you are really up for saving you could install a water butt to collect rainwater for the garden or even install a small rainwater harvesting system to collect rainwater that can be used for flushing toilets, laundry or cleaning the car. 28
We have more information about the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which is a similar scheme applied to things like solar thermal panels for hot water, heat pumps, biomass boiler plant and the like. The RHI scheme will be up and running by April 2011 but any projects completed after July 2009 will qualify for payment under the scheme. For business the Carbon Trust interest free loans are still available though the criteria for the loan will change on 12th April. Loans will be available from £3,000 to £100,000 for many types of energy saving schemes. The target saving will be 2 tonnes of CO2 for every £1,000 of the loan with payback periods of up to four years. Do what you can – your grandchildren’s world needs you !

8 powerful strategies to stay out of the starvation mode and lose fat permanently without dieting or depravation. 1. Adopt the “habit” mindset instead of the “diet” mindset The first step towards losing fat permanently has more to do with your mindset than it does with nutrition or exercise. You have to change your entire attitude about nutrition and exercise. Instead of adopting the mindset of short-term “diets,” you must adopt the mindset of lifelong “habits.” 2. Keep your muscle at all costs The critical factor in turning your body into a “fat-burning machine” is to build and maintain as much lean body mass as possible. Muscle is your fat-burning secret weapon! Muscle is your metabolic furnace. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest. 3. Use a small calorie deficit. To lose body fat, you must be in negative calorie balance (a calorie deficit). You can create a calorie deficit by increasing activity, by decreasing calories or with a combination of both. The most efficient approach to fat loss is to decrease your calories a little and increase your activity a lot. 4. Use exercise to burn the fat rather than diets to starve the fat To lose body fat, there must be a calorie deficit and there is more than one way to create a calorie deficit. One way is to decrease your calorie intake from food. The other is to increase the amount of calories you burn though exercise. Of the two ways to create a calorie deficit, burning the calories is the superior 5. Determine your minimal calorie requirements and never drop below them – ever! One way to ensure that you never go into starvation mode is to determine the minimum amount of calories you can eat without slowing your metabolism. Then, use that as your rock bottom calorie number.
30
6. Eat more frequently and never skip meals Grazing is better for you than gorging. The body interprets missed meals as starvation. By eating smaller portions more frequently, you’ll be able to eat more food than you’ve ever eaten before without being deprived or starving yourself. 7. Don’t stay in a negative calorie balance long When fat loss stops or begins to slow down after being in a substantial calorie deficit, most people panic and cut their calories even further. Sometimes this works and it breaks the plateau. More often than not, it digs you into an even deeper metabolic rut. The best thing you can do is to raise your calories for a few days or sometimes even for a few weeks and then return to a calorie deficit to re-ignite the fat-burning progress. 8. Make your goal to lose body-fat slowly at a rate of 1-2 lbs. per week. The best way to lose fat permanently without muscle loss is to lose weight slowly with a focus on exercise rather than severe calorie cutting. On a final note my advice is; be patient. Don’t ever confuse weight loss with fat loss and remember that the 8 strategies you have just read are pure ‘fact’! If you want to get started and need more help please feel free to get in touch for an informal chat and we can discuss your requirements further.

This month’s Local Hero - Matt Parry Quite possibly our youngest ever Local Hero is Matt Parry who is 6 years old! As Matthew’s mum and dad we are really proud of him and want to support him in this venture in raising money for Institute For Foundational Learning. See www.iflint.com. Here is his story as told by his proud Mum, Jane. "Matthew is 6 years old, after watching a 'You Tube' clip of work that his mum’s friend Janet is involved in, in the Philippines, he said it made him feel sad, he told his mum and dad that he wanted to raise as much money as he could to try and make the people as happy as he was. As Matthew’s mum and dad we are really proud of him and want to support him in this venture in raising money for the Institute For Foundational Learning. See www.iflint.com. Matthew suggested a fun sponsored walk around Langold Lake, where the children could dress up (even adults - the more daring of course). What’s up Doc? The first Doncaster Bunny Run was held on Saturday 3rd April. Approximately 300 participants ran the one mile race to support the Children’s charity SAFE@LAST. The event was organised by James Squires of Austin Banks Limited. The total raised was around £3,000 at the time of writing. However money is still being collected. Aside from the serious aspect of the running, children and adults enjoyed family fun, including a bouncy castle and a man laying on a bed of nails. Well done to James for organising the event and to Local Knowledge for running (and nearly coming last!).

An eye for the weather .... ‘John Holmes’! Peeping into late April and early May for weather signs in the Doncaster area. Written on 12 April 2010 To try and forecast a month ahead forecasters have to use what we call ‘teleconnections’ to get an idea of the most likely weather that far ahead. Our weather is affected by what happens around the equator and tropics with indicators of what the Pacific and Indian Oceans are showing. Terms like La Nina and El Nino may be familiar to you? This in turn can set up weather indicators further north over the northern hemisphere into the north Atlantic and higher latitudes. In a seasonal way they can give some indications several months ahead, for example, of the type of hurricane season, more or less than usual, or will Winter be colder or milder than normal. As an aside this year some forecast centres are predicting a higher than average number so something to remember if you are planning to visit the south eastern parts of USA and the Caribbean from mid-Summer onwards? Looking at the various bits and pieces of information that MAY help peer through the fog of long range forecasting and its not showing much signs yet of any heat wave! The reverse really, with every indication that we are likely to see air that has originated from a point north of the country rather than south of it, perhaps for 50% of the time. The breeze from that northerly direction, anywhere between west
44
through north into the north east could be enough to upset hair do’s now and again but mostly light to moderate in strength. Even frost is likely to feature now and then so beware being too enticed by those displays in garden centres, pop them in a greenhouse for a little while longer. As to precipitation then anyone wanting to see snow is likely to have to get further north than here but the Scottish ski resorts seem set to enjoy a late season this year. Rainfall in the local area is probably going to be around average or even a touch below for the period quoted. Don’t despair though sunshine will be there on many days and on the 30-40% of the time the air comes from a southerly point then temperatures climbing almost into the warm category. So all in all a pretty usual and rather mixed bag with the odds slightly favouring temperatures spending more time below than above normal for late April and early May. Ta-ra, I will try again with the next issue, and in the meantime please do visit my web site for a shorter range forecasts issued on Monday and Thursday each week.
