Local Knowledge
Welcome Welcome to the sixth issue of ‘Local Knowledge’.
“I see you have Local Knowledge on-line now, what’s that about?”
Question
In conjunction with increasing our distribution to 15,000 magazines a month we have now (with the help of Nick Cable of IRUN) developed an on-line ‘page turner’ version of Local Knowledge.
through their door. This is because it is a very wasteful process increasing our distribution to hundreds of thousands to reach everyone in Doncaster. Now LK is on-line you can choose whether you want to read it or not!
Q. What is Local Knowledge on-line?
Secondly, we at Local Knowledge do not believe that dramatically increasing the number of printed copies around Doncaster is the future. Granted, Local Knowledge will always have a presence in the form of a ‘proper’ printed magazine and we will be increasing our distribution in due course, but if you look at other publications, such as the local newspapers they all have an on-line version as they also know that people are changing their habits when it comes to obtaining news or information.
A. Rather than produce a website, we have an on-line page turner that displays the latest edition of Local Knowledge on your PC or Laptop. Q. What’s an on-line page turner? A. The Local Knowledge on-line page tuner is basically an electronic version of your favourite monthly magazine. You can flip the pages over as much as you like without ripping them and you can zoom in REALLY close so you can do the Spot The Difference or Find The Crown competitions! You can also click on any of the advertisers that have website links and be magically transported to their websites! Q. Why have you put Local Knowledge on-line and not just stuck to delivering normal magazines?
If you have any questions or queries please email us at the normal address. Dave Burns, Editor Next issue out from 1st December 2009. Deadline for articles and adverts is 20th November 2009.
A. Two reasons. Firstly, some people still do not get a hard copy of Local Knowledge pushed

I have recently returned from the annual ABTA travel convention which this year was in the delightful city of Barcelona. The theme of the convention was about the economy and how that would affect the travel industry. We were told that people now “buy clever”. Apparently we all do a lot more research on pricing before purchasing our travel products. For me nothing has changed, the consumer has always bought clever. I always listen with interest when the media announce that the travel industry is struggling, there are 1,000s of holidays left. It is the same as the recession, they portray doom and gloom. The facts are the big tour operators of Thomson/First Choice and Thomas Cook/Airtours predicted a down turn in sales and therefore cut capacity by the tune of 13%.
Travel advice Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Paul Hope. I am the Director of Travel Creators, a company I formed in July 2009. I have worked in the travel industry since 1994, working in retail shops, call centres and from home. I have held management positions in all of these environments. Most recently I was awarded the prestigious title of Face of Travel 2009. I look forward to writing as a local travel expert where I will offer recommendations, tips and advice, inform you of travel news and give an insight into destinations that you can travel to from our local airport, Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield. 8
The industry was only actually down 4% meaning a potential short fall in holidays. This was never the case as although holiday capacity was cut by significant volumes, flights were not. The travel industry today allows for what we call dynamic packaging, you may refer to this as tailor made. In a nutshell we book an airfare, a hotel room and complement that with a transfer. This prevented any shortfall and it is this method which more often than not leads to cheaper package holidays. I am often asked when should I book my holiday? There is no right or wrong answer to this. What I personally believe is that low cost airlines sell their cheapest seats early. Charter airlines have to follow suit, therefore a flight is best booked at the earliest opportunity. Hotels too are better to book early as most bed banks provide early booking discounts. Hotel availability with a full choice tends to be available 7 months in advance. Tour operator package holidays always have the highest fluid discounts at the end of December/beginning of January. Note the word fluid, as holidays sell, the amount of discount falls. I look to book my holidays 7 months before. For those of you who cannot book in advance the “late booking”, (something I used to specialise in) is a thing of the past. True you can occasionally pick up a late bargain but more so outside of peak dates. Late bookings tend to be best 6-8 weeks prior to departure as suppliers increase their prices as aircraft become full. I hope that you have found this useful. I look forward to writing for you again in the future. If you have a holiday question, I would be delighted to answer it for you. Drop me an email to paul.hope@travelcreators.co.uk Thank you.

In times of economic difficulty it makes sense for people to work together. As it is particularly difficult for any new businesses trading at the moment, we at Local Knowledge are playing our part to help by promoting a new business venture each month in conjunction with Success Doncaster. Success Doncaster offers a wide range of FREE, confidential tailored support to people and businesses in Doncaster. The programme can help you raise your skill levels, encourage growth of existing businesses, support new business start-ups and assist you back to employment.
Mark Addison is an excellent example of a Success Doncaster beneficiary who has benefited from the support of the programme in a number of ways. After spotting an opportunity in the local automotive repair market, he purchased a Franchise from Revive! Auto Innovations (UK) Ltd. Revive! provide a mobile SMART automotive paintwork repair service. Revive! are a well established Company with over 50 Franchisees operating throughout the UK. Mark’s Franchise territory includes Doncaster and Rotherham. Using the latest technology, Mark is able to use a technique that targets the specific area of damage meaning less materials and lower costs to the customer. The customer also benefits by not having the inconvenience of being without a car for several days while the work is being carried out.
When coming to Success Doncaster for assistance, Mark was immediately put in touch with the Business Buddies strand of the programme where he was partnered with a personal business advisor, he also received help through the North Doncaster Development Trust. Between the two Success Doncaster strands he has received advice on being able to source an enterprise grant, he was shown how to register his business for VAT and has received support with different elements of marketing to enable him to promote himself and his business to a wider audience. For more information on Revive Auto Innovations, contact Mark on 07545 641526. Every now and then you stumble across someone who is just a good person. They have that indefinable, indescribable ‘something’ that just makes them stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s your local milkman, school crossing patrol lady/man, community worker, local volunteer, the lady in the local chip shop, or indeed your next door neighbour, it’s about time we reward, but more importantly recognise, their services to either a business or to their community (or both). If you would like to nominate your Local Hero please ring, write or email. The more information you can provide us with, the more it will help. We will consider all nominations and will feature the next ‘Local Hero’ in the December issue. Please supply all information by 19th November.

This month’s Local Hero This month’s Local Heroes are hoping for an up-lifting experience in support of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Trish and Michelle Edwards from Evelyn’s Den are raising money in an eyebrow raising way. The shop’s owners are hoping that their customers will continue to give them their ‘full support’ when donating their unwanted bras and basques. Evelyn’s Den are giving customers a discount off new underwear purchased when handing in an old bra. Old bras (and basques) are being put to good use as they are being given to charity as part of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance “bag it-up” campaign.
The money is being used for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity. They have two aircraft that cover the whole of the country helping the emergency services. Good quality bras will be sold to women mainly in West Africa. Others which are tatty, worn out or broken will be dismantled and parts sent for re-cycling. Trish said “we are wanting to try and make at least £1000 for the cause so get bringing in those old bras and placing them in the store’s pink box”. Well done ladies, the LK team.

Tax relief at up to 100% may be available for expenditure on furnishings and fittings

FURNISHED HOLIDAY LETS
Andrew W Best - Solicitor
HSR LAW SOLICITORS The tax rules for overseas holiday letting businesses in the European Economic Area (EEA) have changed. Between now and April 2010 owners of qualifying overseas holiday lets will be able to take advantage of the generous rules which have previously only been available for holiday lets in the UK. It may be possible to apply some of these rules as far back as 2003. From April 2010 the beneficial treatment will be withdrawn for all holiday lets, whether they are in the UK or elsewhere in the EEA. This means there are two areas for tax planning. First, we can advise owners (and former owners) of overseas holiday lets of the opportunities available as a 14
result of the temporary change in the rules. Second, we can advise owners of holiday lets in the UK on possible action they can take now before the benefits disappear in April 2010. Overseas holiday lets If any of your clients carry on an overseas holiday letting business or have done at any time since 2003 they may be entitled to some very significant reliefs and repayments. It is not possible to list them all in this brief note but here are some examples of the benefits which may be available: Where a qualifying property or business has been sold in the last 6 years it might be
01302 347800 possible to reclaim up to threequarters of the capital gains tax which was paid; Where a qualifying property or business has been sold in the last 6 years and some or all or the sale proceeds were used to buy another property or a completely different business it may be possible to defer the capital gains tax on the original sale; Tax relief at up to 100% may be available for expenditure on furnishings and fittings incurred in the last three years; If the overseas holiday letting business has made losses it may be possible to set these off other income and gains;

Local Expert The sale of an overseas holiday letting business before April 2010 could qualify for entrepreneur’s relief reducing the rate of tax from 18% to 10%; and it may be possible to take the profits of the overseas letting business into account in determining contributions to an approved pension. UK holiday lets Any owners of holiday lets in the UK who are intending to sell may want to consider completing the sale before April 2010. This may enable them to reduce the tax rate on the sale from 18% to 10% by taking advantage of entrepreneur’s relief. If no sale is being contemplated, owners may want to consider putting the property into a trust structure to take advantage of the current tax benefits. If any owners are considering spending money on furnishing and fittings for their lets they may want to do this before the tax relief disappears in April 2010.

Each month Local Knowledge will support a charity nominated by one of our advertisers or readers. National Adoption Week is from 9th – 15th November 2009 but given the need for adopters Yorkshire Adoption Agency is starting early! The Agency will be holding an Adoption Information Day on the 7th November 2009 at the Holiday Inn in Warmsworth, Doncaster, between Noon and 6.00pm. Single people or couples interested in adopting a child/children will be warmly welcomed by the Agency’s Social Work staff. If you are not able to come to the Information Day but would like more information please contact: Yorkshire Adoption Agency Jubilee House 1 Jubilee Road Wheatley Doncaster DN1 2UE Telephone Number: 01302 349909 E Mail: Info@yorkshireadoptionagency. org.uk Yorkshire Adoption Agency
(formerly Doncaster Adoption and Family Welfare Society) was founded in 1946 to find adoptive families for babies. Since then the face of adoption has significantly changed. Today few babies are placed for adoption after birth, however many young children still need the security, love and commitment provided by adoptive families. The children are looked after by Local Authorities throughout the country and are unable to remain with their birth families for many reasons, for example parental ill health, drug or alcohol misuse or parents having some learning difficulties. Some children will have experienced harm or will have been at risk of being harmed whilst living in their birth families. As we know they are the most vulnerable children in society. Yorkshire Adoption Agency works hard to find families who will help them to recover from their earlier life experiences and to reach their full potential.
Over the years the Agency has successfully placed hundreds of children with new families. Whilst there are some challenges in parenting adopted children, in our experience these are far outweighed by the rewards. The Agency does not have a view of an “Ideal Adoptive Family” and people who had thought they might not be accepted as adopters have gone on to successfully parent adopted children. At any one time more than a thousand children in England need adoptive families. Unfortunately the children who wait longest for new families are those who need to grow up with their brothers or sisters, are over the age of seven or are not of While/English ethnicity. The Agency welcomes enquiries from prospective adopters regardless of age, gender, marital status, disability, sexuality, race or culture. You will be guaranteed a speedy and friendly response to your enquiry!
As part of our philosophy of giving back to the community, we are supporting charitable organisations that have provided us with services that money can’t buy. In each issue we are going to provide a

Protecting Your Privacy Protecting Your Privacy The final stage in implementing the Companies Act 2006, the longest ever Act to be passed by Parliament, has now been reached with the last changes taking effect from 1 October 2009. Nick Skelton, partner at Doncaster-based Crozier Jones, Chartered Certified Accountants, outlines new rules which will allow company directors to keep their home addresses secret if they so wish. In the past, a company director’s usual residential address had to be given on all Companies House documents, appeared on the public record and could be seen by anyone.
With effect from 1 October 2009, directors are now able to supply a separate service address in addition to their usual residential address. The service address will appear on the public register, accessible by to the general public, with the residential address being protected information, only made available to public authorities and credit reference agencies. (However, it should be borne in mind that the residential address will still appear on existing documents already filed at Companies House. These will not be removed from the record.)
continue to appear on the public register. An example of an appropriate service address could be the company’s registered office. Ask the Man with Two Heads In last month’s Local Knowledge magazine I wrote about prioritising those things that are important to us in our life. In order to fully grasp everything that we hold dear it is also important that we identify the direction in which we are moving; you get similar results moving away from as sadness as you do moving towards happiness, it all depends on where your focus is. The further you move from what it is you do not want the less motivation you have to move away from it and you will gradually drift back; on the flip side the closer you get to the things you move towards the stronger the motivation becomes to move closer.
motivation is generated with words like must, should, have to, etc. then it is probably away from a negative. If you are motivated by want to, enjoy, deserve then it is probably a toward value. If you go for what you want you will always head in the right direction; if you move away from what you don’t want, who knows what direction you will move in? For a refresher you can see my last article on the Local Knowledge website at www.localknowledgedoncaster.co.uk For answers to specific questions about how you can make you life more fulfilling or how you can move towards the future that you want drop me a line and let me help. Dean Hutchinson, The Man with Two Heads I can be contacted at Heads for Living on 0844 351 1308 or Heads for Business on 0844 351 1473
Do you know someone who is focussed on not being fat, rather than on being slim? You will have seen this person try a diet and start to lose weight. Then as he or she has moved away from being fat their motivation has become weaker and the weight has come back, until they are again motivated to try another diet – yo-yo. You get what you focus on, so ultimately you will achieve all those things you are moving away from as well as those you move towards: it all depends on what it is that you are looking at as you move. See this principle in action for yourself: Sit at a table with a piece of string in front of you, imagine your body is the thing that you rank as very important, if you move towards it, pull the string, if you move away push the string, and notice the different effect. It may not be easy for you to know whether or not you move towards or away from your values, so how do you find out? A rule of thumb: if your

Danny Wallace -
Random Acts of Kindness Born as Daniel Frederick Wallace, Danny Wallace (33) has in his (so far) short life achieved many things. TV producer, journalist, writer. He has written several books to date including his 2005 book enititled ‘Yes Man’ about his experiences where he describes how he spent six months “saying Yes where one would have said No”. This went on to become a hit movie staring Jim Carrey. Until now, I have been admiring Danny from afar, reading his books, watching his TV programmes and generally thinking he’s an all-round good guy. Then I forgot about it.
The following has been extracted from Danny Wallace (and his karma army’s) book – ‘Random Acts of Kindness – 365 ways to make the world a nicer place’. Each month we will pick 10 (RAoK) at, you guessed it, RANDOM! Go on, do it, you know you want to…..

It’s a book about doing nice things. Some are funny, some are clever and some are just so right. So it got me thinking again……. So I thought, in this technologically enlightened age, why not drop him an email asking him if we at Local Knowledge can use extracts from his book to try and get the people of Doncaster to go around and undertake random acts of kindness? Everybody and his mum has their own websites these days (and you can find anything if you GOOGLE it) so I emailed him a very polite email. I hoped that despite his obvious fame (and now being a Hollywood superstar) he would reply. And guess what – he did! (which is more than can be said of Duncan Bannatyne – but that’s another story). Being the fine fellow he is he was delighted that we could try and spread the kind message through Donny. So please can everyone go out and try one of the random acts of kindness featured and tell us how you got on next month in Local Knowledge. Or if you have any other suggestions for your own random acts of kindness please let us know.

You can call me Forrest Before founding Mat & Mouse I spent many years as an IT Project Manager for HMCS. It was very rewarding to implement a huge government IT project across the South Yorkshire region. It was also very predictable work, due to the bureaucratic nature of the Civil Service. I had no idea how different things would be when I decided to start my own business. Life is quite literally like a box of proverbial chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get with IT. A typical day’s work can be wide ranging for me. One day recently started with working on Microsoft Exchange Server at a firm of accountants, and then later on repairing a laptop that had been shaken violently by a teenager because “it was
going too slow”. I think that most parents would agree that computers are a necessity when there is a teenager in the household. After all, how else can they get through the vast mountain of homework bestowed upon them? Although they might very occasionally visit the odd social networking site during their endeavours. This is my guide on how a typical 15 year old can systematically destroy a laptop in 4 easy stages: Constantly downloading applications, games, music, and video until the hard drive reaches breaking point; Along with these downloads come unwanted visitors in the form of Viruses, Malware, Adware and Scareware;
in the middle of their essay on Macbeth that has to be handed in the next day (file not saved); Teenager then flings laptop about in a temper. …and that’s where we can come in. At Mat and Mouse IT Services we can replace broken laptop screens, remove viruses and other Malware, and clean up and optimise hard drives. Oh and by the way, we can also beef up business security, perform security audits and significantly speed up business PCs to increase productivity. For further information call Mat & Mouse on: 01302 534449 or 07867 984740.
The laptop will then crash right

Good News... Minnie
From an original story in Local Knowledge issue 2 about Minnie the dog...
“Is there anyone out there who can help me?”
Charlie
‘This is Minnies plight’, being somewhat older than my other kennel mates I am ALWAYS overlooked. Some days I lay near my door so that people wont miss me as they walk by, but only the odd person actually acknowledges me, and even then its only for the briefest of moments.......... We are glad to report that Minnie has been adopted and given a new caring home. Only 2 months later we featured Charlie who was also desperate for a new home. Charlie is a typical staffi, very giddy and boisterous but very loving. He will require some basic training. He is clean in his kennel and not destructive. A suitable home would have no children under 12 years old. He is not good with other dogs. He has a lovely temperament and is longing for a good home. We are glad to report that Charlie has also been adopted and given a new caring home. The RSPCA said that interest in the centre has increased since it appeared in the Local Knowledge magazine.

The Diabetes Time Bomb The fastest growing medical condition in the UK Welcome back to our regular slimming column with local weight-loss and weight-maintenance expert, Vivienne Stewart This month, Vivienne looks at the
damage overeating and carrying excess weight can do to our bodies with regard to diabetes. Being overweight can have serious effects on your long-term health, increasing the risk of a host of complaints including diabetes, liver and heart disease, joint problems, cancer and reduced fertility. Overeating is a growing problem in the UK and obesity rates have tripled over the last 20 years. Twothirds of adults are classified as overweight and almost 25 per cent of all men and women are now obese – and being just three stone above your ideal weight classifies you as obese. One of the main problems associated with excessive weight gain is a lack of awareness of the potential health hazards. Even if you think you are only a little overweight you could still be at risk, as any extra weight gain can increase your chances of ill health. Diabetes currently affects more than two million people in the UK and by 2025 that could rise to four million. Over 85% of people with diabetes have type 2, which is strongly linked to being overweight. Some sufferers experience heart problems, blindness and even death as a result of the condition. The NHS currently spends an astonishing one million pounds per hour treating Diabetes and its associated complications. But with professional help and a positive attitude towards diet and exercise many Diabetics can live long and healthy lives. Type 1 Diabetes can’t be avoided and usually develops in childhood and is associated with the inability of the pancreas to produce the insulin which regulates blood sugar. Type 2 is far more common and is often called Adult Onset Diabetes and is strongly linked to being overweight and as the nations waist lines expand, so will the number of type 2 sufferers. It is thought that some of the body’s excess fat is stored in the liver, which then leads it to respond less well to insulin. As a result the liver makes more sugar than the body needs, which then increases the sugar levels in the blood. Also when muscles accumulate too much fat, they are less likely to burn this excess sugar. Although many people can initially cope with the sugar rise by making more insulin, further weight gain putting more fat into the liver and muscle eventually gives the pancreas more work to do. It may then become exhausted and the sugar level starts to rise sufficiently high for the person to be diagnosed as type 2 Diabetic. Calculating your BMI is an easy way to work out if you could be at risk. See last months issue or go onto lighterlife.com to find a handy calculator. Any other questions please call Vivienne at LighterLife on 01302 760777 or go on-line to www.LighterLife.com

Flying Start Day Nursery was opened in 2001 by Carol and Martin Cooper. It is situated on the edge of the exciting new development at Robin Hood Airport near the village of Finningley. Carol has a degree in education and is a qualified teacher. Both Carol and Martin share in the management of the nursery. They are available at the nursery on a daily basis to give you and your child personal attention and care.
Two of our three rooms for toddlers and preschool children have large opening doors giving safe and free access to the secure outdoor play area which ensures integrated indoor-outdoor play. We also have a very large indoor play area where the children can play with large blocks, soft play, or just have quiet reading time, again with safe and free access to the secure outdoor play area. This natural light and airy indoor area is also used for the children’s mealtimes.
We were inspired to open our nurseries, first Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery in 1997 and then Flying Start Day Nursery in 2001, as we had three young sons, triplets, and wanted to provide for them and other children, truly excellent childcare and learning opportunities in a lovely environment.
Our outdoor play area is partly covered by a light attractive canopy protecting the children from sun or showers when and if necessary. It also has a sensory garden, a living willow den, and a vegetable garden which the children love tending.
Our Flying Start Day Nursery has now been extended and completely refurbished to create an absolutely lovely purpose built nursery. For safety and security CCTV operates both inside and outside the nursery. All the indoor spaces are at ground floor level and enjoy airconditioning and under floor heating.
32
Our baby room has its own kitchen area, sleep room, and changing room. It has its own small garden with a canopy over part of it to provide shade from the sun for the babies.

We feel that Flying Start Day Nursery, just like its elder sister Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery, really does provide a safe, exciting, and stimulating environment, where your child can develop naturally, learn, and be cared for. We promote healthy eating and our nursery cook prepares wholesome meals. The meat and vegetables are sourced locally and when possible we use our own vegetables grown by the children. We have a cafe style snack system mid-morning and mid-afternoon where the children help themselves to a variety of fresh fruit, salad, vegetables, milk, and water. Water is accessible throughout the day. The Department for Children, Schools, and Families has designated Flying Start Day Nursery as a ‘Workplace Nursery’. This means that parents who are employed locally can benefit from significant savings on their childcare costs. For more details visit our web site. Large car park with easy access and exit.

Compost Corner Welcome to the third edition of Compost Corner, Local Knowledge’s monthly gardening column. hourly rate). If you wish to tackle the problem yourself the first priority is to remove leaves from your lawn.
Welcome to November’s edition of Compost Corner. Hello again, Someone called me after last month’s issue of Local Knowledge to collect their leaves which prompts me to look up into the sky and see that the leaves are still falling.
Leaves left on your grass for any length of time can cause considerable damage, blocking sunlight and oxygen and will turn your grass a horrible yellow colour. That’s it now - No more about leaves! It is now about time to cut down any perennials you have left that are still surviving.
Aaaarrrggggghhh. I have been asked to mention again what to do with those pesky leaves: Falling leaves can be a real problem cluttering up driveways and borders and an even bigger problem for the lawn. A fantastic way to deal with this years falling leaves would be to give me a call and hey presto your leaves will be gone! (for a very reasonable

Garden centres are stocking Winter bedding and will soon have Xmas planters and hanging baskets. I always think it is a good idea to brighten up your garden at this time of year as we will have little colour from now until the end of March. Cyclamens, Pansies/Primulas can all be bought inexpensively to give the desired effect and if you need any help or advice give me a call. I will keep this months question simple and topical.... when is the best time to move/split perennials? Happy planting.

GOOD NEWS “Growth and income from an ISA is TAX FREE and the amount you can save has just increased for over 50’s” Changes to Individual Savings Accounts Since 1987 individuals have been able to save money in tax free schemes including Personal Equity Plans (PEPS),Tessa and the most recent, the Individual Savings Accounts. However you had to choose between a Mini or a Maxi, a Cash or Stocks or shares ISA. Not only have the names of these schemes changed but also the amount you could save. Over the years I have spent many hours explaining the above changes and how they impact on my clients. From October 2009 the rules are changing again. Below is a short summary outlining the most recent changes and the associated benefits. Please contact me should you require any further clarification.
Eligibility
Changes from October 2009 and April 2010
In order to be eligible for an ISA an investor must be an individual (i.e. not a company or trustee) and must:
Currently, the total maximum amount that can be saved in an ISA each tax year is £7,200, of which a maximum of £3,600 can apply to the cash account.
Be aged at least 18, or 16 for a cash ISA. Be resident and ordinarily resident in the UK for tax purposes, or if not resident be performing duties as a Crown employee serving overseas and paid out of the public revenue of the United Kingdom (typically a serving member of the armed forces or a diplomat). Not have subscribed to another ISA of the same type in the same tax year; and Not have exceeded the overall subscription limit. An existing ISA need not be closed if an investor ceases to be eligible but no further subscriptions can be made until they become eligible again. A husband and wife are treated as separate individuals so although joint ownership of an ISA is prohibited each may fully subscribe to one in their own name.
38
However, the total maximum amount that can be saved in an ISA is to be increased to £10,200, of which up to £5,100 can be saved in cash. This is being implemented in two-stages as follows: From 6 October 2009, the new total ISA limit of £10,200 applies to people aged 50 or over; and For all other individuals the new limit will apply from 6th April 2010 (next tax year). When considering the age 50 rule, it is important to note that someone who is currently under age 50 but who will reach age 50 before 5 April 2010 will only be able to pay in more than £7,200 during the 2009/10 tax year (up to a max of £10,200) once they have attained their 50th birthday. So, for example, if an investor will not attain age 50 until 1 March 2010, they will not be able to pay in more than £7,200 until 1 March 2010.

Issue 6
11/2009
It is also worth noting that if the ISA limit had been increased in line with inflation over the last 10 years’ it would currently stand at £9,600 and therefore many people feel that this increase is long overdue. Whilst the increase in real terms is modest, it should help people who rely on their savings for income, as withdrawals from an ISA are free from income tax and capital gains tax. I trust you have found this explanation beneficial, however please contact me on the numbers provided should you require any further assistance regarding the new rules or advice regarding existing schemes you may have. Levels and bases of and reliefs from taxation are subject to change and their value depends on the individual circumstances of the investor The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount invested.

Hi everyone, I’m pleased to report the installation of the Heat Pump & Cylinder unit is now complete and will be commissioned over the next few days. We have had the unit up and running and had both hot water and heating from it. The next step is the commissioning of the system and most importantly the setting up of the controls. That’s really this month’s main topic. It’s fine to have a superb system that is capable of delivering all your heating and hot water needs if the controls are up to the job. Power-flushing the system to make sure the system is clean and bleeding the pipework to ensure it’s free of air will all help to make the system as efficient as possible but if your controls are not working correctly you will not get the full benefit. Check your valves are not leaking on the radiators and that the room thermostat operates correctly. Check the settings on your time clock. Do you really need the heating on at 5am if you don’t get out of bed till 8am and do you need the heating on full until you go to bed?
Have a look for modern controls which can be added to your system such as programmable room thermostats, weather compensation systems which vary the start time of your heating for differing outside temperatures and thermostatic valves for your radiators which allow you to set different temperatures for each room. Many of these controls are available in wireless versions and can be fitted with the minimum of disruption. There are many different options and a little research will help. By all means contact the guy’s at Waveform and they will be happy to help. Visit www.waveformservices.co.uk for contact details. The following web links may also help. www.danfoss-randall.co.uk www.honeywell.com/uk/homes.htm www.horstmann.co.uk www.sunvic.co.uk
Contact Waveform Services for any help you might need. 01302 762424. Thought for the month: Optimism is contagious. Try and catch it.
See how long your home takes to get warm from a cold start and set your controls to suit. 42

Human Resources
The 3 Misses of Communication I get called in to lots of organisations for lots of different HR issues. Performance matters, absence issues, grievance concerns, disciplinary cases, recruitment queries, induction and contractual discrepancy issues. Through my experience with working with businesses of all kinds I have come to conclude that very many of the matters I have to advise on fall into what I call the “3 misses of communication”. Misunderstanding: I have a fabulous sign that I use in training that states “Keep Right” and includes an arrow that points to the left! Organisations can often communicate to employees one way and metaphorically
point in the complete other direction. Many of our policies and procedures can be written in confusing ways that lead to misunderstandings. Tribunals are full of these!
employees gets confused and the results are that you get something completely different than what you actually required.
Misperception: Do you see the old lady or do you see the young lady? We are both looking at the same picture but can often see different things within it. We sometimes tell people to do “A,B,C” and the results are that you get “X,Y,Z”. Sometimes the perception of what it is that is being asked from
Misinterpretation: “Do not enter, entrance only” is another one of my signs! We issue confusing and often prescriptive procedures and legal documents that are not clear in their expectations and can often be misinterpreted. Use everyday language for all communications, more especially within those legal procedural documents – contracts, handbooks, policies etc.

Last Month’s WINNERS We have had quite a few comments saying that we are not giving enough time to send off for competitions (especially when it’s difficult to find the crown!) so we have decided that to give you more time we are extending the deadlines for all competition entries until the 19th of the following month. This means that we will not be able to give you the details of the winners until the month after the following month - if that makes sense!

Ward Bros is 90 years Old One of Doncaster’s longest established family businesses, Ward Brothers in Waterdale, is 90 years old this year. The name ‘Ward Brothers’ relates to the joint founders of the business, Fred and Tom Ward. The two men were from a family of seven. They hailed from Ripon and started trading in Doncaster’s Cemetery Road shortly after serving in the 1914-18 War. Tom was a cabinet maker and had been an apprentice with the Riponbased firm of Abbotts. The two brothers were enticed to Doncaster by relatives who were already settled in the area. During the early 1920s, they regularly placed small advertisements in the Doncaster Gazette. One announced: ‘Reupholstering in any material, promptly and properly carried out; estimates free-Ward Brothers, Cemetery Road, Doncaster. In the mid-1920s, Fred married and moved to Apley Road; the couple subsequently had one child, Betty Ward. Tom never married and continued to live at Cemetery Road with his mother, until eventually moving to Ellers Road. In the early days the two Ward Brothers made all types of furniture and could turn out 100 kitchen tables a week. They delivered goods by handcart but later hired motor vehicles from Dickinsons in Whitaker Street and Tommy Sprakes in Cemetery Road. But eventually they bought their own van. The company supplied furniture to town centre shops like Jackson’s in French Gate and Gilberthorpe’s in St Sepulchre Gate and eventually decided to go into retail themselves purchasing 32 Harwood Terrace, in Waterdale. 48
On opening the retail outlet around 1930, the company ceased to make its own furniture, buying stock from suppliers in London, Leeds and Sheffield. A bus station had recently been established in Doncaster’s Waterdale, so Ward Brothers shop was in a prime position to attract custom. The brothers also sold other items, besides furniture, such as carpets and curtains, becoming ‘complete’ house furnishers. On leaving school Betty Ward found work in the Borough Treasurer’s Office and married a colleague Harold Fiddler, in 1948. The latter subsequently assisted the two brothers with their accounts. Tom Ward died in 1954 and it was around this time that Harold Fiddler left his full-time job to partner his fatherin-law. In the post-war years, the company began to expand, taking over more property in Harwood Terrace. A new warehouse was also established around this time on the Kelham street Industrial Estate. Fred Ward died in 1972 and his son-in-law Harold Fiddler three years later. Consequently, the latter’s son Howard Fiddler, took control of the firm in 1975 and remains today the company’s Managing Director. To continue the family tradition, Howard’s son, Thomas, joined the business in 2008 as the 4th generation family member More Harwood Terrace property was acquired during the 1970’s and Howard had the following comments to make: ‘Through our acquisitions the store effectively became lots of houses knocked into one and there were numerous little staircases and passageways. Whilst customers liked the individual room settings, they did tend to get a little disorientated! As a result we took

the decision about 15 years ago to remove all the staircases, demolish numerous walls and widen walkways and corridors. ‘We’ve been really pleased with the results’ said Howard. ‘We have managed to keep the intimacy of individual room settings, improve the standard of our displays and at the same time help customers to more easily find the products they are looking for’ Said Howard ‘During the summer this year the store has undergone another massive refurbishment programme and we have taken also the opportunity to introduce a number of new suppliers to run alongside our established brand name favourites such as Ekornes, Duresta, G-Plan and Ercol. These include Fama, a modern upholstery range from Spain and Casabella a contemporary high gloss dining collection from Italy. On the traditional side we have introduced a beautiful traditional cherry cabinet collection from Winsor Furniture and a solid French oak dining range from Antix, exclusive to ourselves in Doncaster’ I asked Howard if he ever got fed up with furniture or considered selling up. ‘I never get tired of this business, everyday day presents new challenges and opportunities and I hope Ward Brothers can continue to be of service to the people of Doncaster for many years to come’
Peter

For Richer or Poorer? Susan Jubb is a highly respected, successful divorce and family lawyer. She gained First Class Honours at University and was a scholarship student in her Solicitors Exams. She has been married and divorced and has an 18 year old son Thomas. She likens herself to “a dog with a bone” as she never gives up! She is one of only 5 collaboratively trained divorce lawyers in Doncaster and works within Andrew Isaacs Solicitors which is the only specialist litigation practice in Doncaster. She has recently moved here from a specialist firm on the South Coast and has already started to make an impact in Doncaster. There are often no second chances! Get it right first time. The reality is that once you have settled your finances on divorce it is highly unlikely that you can change what you have agreed or what has been ordered by the Court. It is critical that you have good advice in the lead up to your settlement. You need to understand that advice. In my opinion, you cannot make the right decisions without that. You cannot have control over your life otherwise.
This means that you either need to go on a divorce law course or get a good divorce lawyer! There should be no point in your case where you feel worried about asking your divorce lawyer anything. If you do not understand everything then in my opinion it is probably your divorce lawyer who is at fault not you. I often have clients come to see me who want to change agreements. I have to tell them that it is very difficult if not impossible. It will be very

expensive and uncertain. What you must avoid is being that person. Remember to always instruct a divorce lawyer whom you have confidence in. That is essential! Local Feature Since seeing Allan Pease live at Magna in Rotherham earlier this year, I have been desperate to publish extracts from his (and his wife, Barbara’s) books. Getting to know more about yourself, your spouse or partner, and
Issue 6
getting to know more about other people is Local Knowledge! For those who have not been introduced to Allan and Barbara they have been writing books for many years together and topics for their books include the differences between men and women and body language. For me personally, they are very funny
11/2009
and very insightful at the same time. A rare combination. For further information please log onto: www.peaseinternational.com The following has been extracted from ‘The Definitive Book of Body Language’ with kind permission from Allan & Barbara Pease.
Dave
How well can you spot body language contradictions? People everywhere have developed a fascination with the body language of politicians because everyone knows that politicians sometimes pretend to believe in something that they don’t believe in or infer that they are someone other than they really are. Politicians spend much of their time ducking, dodging, avoiding, pretending, lying, hiding their emotions or feelings using smokescreens and mirrors and waving to imaginary friends in the crowd. We instinctively know that they will eventually be tripped up by the contradictory body language signals, so we love to watch them closely, in anticipation of catching them out!
Why it’s not what you say Despite what it may be politically correct to believe, when we meet people for the first time we quickly make judgements about their friendliness, dominance and potential as a sexual partner – and their eyes are not the first place we look. Most researchers now agree that words are used primarily for conveying information, while body language is used for negotiating interpersonal messages and in some cases is used as a substitute for verbal messages.
Allan and Barbara Pease
For example, a woman can give a man a ‘look to kill’ and will convey a very clear message to him without opening her mouth. They key to body language is being able to understand a person’s emotional condition while listening to what they are saying and noting the circumstances in which they are saying it. This allows you to separate the fact from fiction and reality from fantasy. Next month: more secrets of body language!
