Business & Lifestyle
Welcome Welcome to the March issue of
FRE E
com peti tion s insi de
‘Business & Lifestyle’ Doncaster’s only monthly business and lifestyle magazine. Hopefully the Winter coats and wellies are now a thing of the past. The challenging economic climate combined with the challenging weather conditions over the past couple of months have meant that many businesses have not had the best of starts in 2010.
This month’s prize is a special pamper day for you and your better half, including lunch, courtesy of Harrington’s of Bawtry. The prize is worth over £200!!! Yes £200! Enjoy the ultimate in relaxing experiences courtesy of ‘Business & Lifestyle’ and Harrington’s of Bawtry.
We want to change that!
Also, we have some new contributions to the business section including the fine chap that is James Criddle from JCS Yorkshire and the very lovely Michelle Harding from Harding AuYong IT Solutions.
We at Local Knowledge ‘Business & Lifestyle’ are still trying hard to get our advertisers more business. We are still championing local businesses and business people by getting each and every one of them noticed a minimum of 15,000 times each and every month. Many copies are passed onto other people and many copies are looked at by numerous people in business reception areas from all over the South Yorkshire area. The February winner of the competition for the reader of ‘Business & Lifestyle’ magazine who lives the furthest away goes to Mr G who lives just outside London apparently. Thanks to Mr G for reading the magazine although he has still yet to confirm how he came across a copy!
Its all here in the March issue of ‘Business & Lifestyle’ magazine. However, if for some reason you think we should be including something or someone that we haven’t please feel free to let us know! Local Knowledge ‘Business & Lifestyle’ magazine, the ONLY monthly business & lifestyle magazine in Doncaster! Dave Burns, Editor Call: 01302 237137 Email: daveburns@localknowledgedoncaster.co.uk
To warm your cockles this month we are starting the first of a series of high quality, high value prizes in addition to our normal prizes.

How can being overweight increase the risk of cancer? Oestrogen is a natural hormone present in larger quantities in females of child baring age that any other sector of the population. However, in December 2003 the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) added oestrogen to it’s list of cancer causing agents. In cancers oestrogen aids the binding of certain receptors sites on good cells and this spreads the cancer.
TESTIMONIAL
It is now widely known that fat cells produce oestrogen. The greater number of fat cells a body has the greater the amount of oestrogen it produces. Being overweight also prevents oestrogen from being fully processed, and disposed of by the body. Instead it stores up this unwanted killer. Our modern diet is also to blame as it is higher in oestrogens than that of our predecessors, because of the larger amounts of animal fats we now consume from meat and dairy products. Eating big meals, high in calories from fats and carbohydrates, causes a surge in our insulin levels, which has a knock-on effect to hormone levels especially oestrogen.

(Oestrogens from plastics, cleaning agents, inner city recycled water supplies and beauty products are also cause for concern).

With the general downturn in business and the budget for advertising ever decreasing it is important to select only the methods which give a good return. My choice therefore has to be Local Knowledge ‘Business & Lifestyle’. It is different to the other publications. It has many items of interest and has much more to offer the reader, this is why my investment again this month is with Local Knowledge ‘Business & Lifestyle’. Vivienne, LighterLife.

What can I do to reduce my risk? Phytoestrogens block the attack from oestrogens to protect the body. These can be found in pulses, beans, peas, chickpeas, green vegetables, carrots, red peppers, broccoli, cabbage and herbs. Eating more of these foods will help reduce the risk of this type of cancer, and it is hardly suprising that vegetarians who include these foods daily have half the cancer rates of meat eaters.

Business Development “When is a sale not good business?” James Criddle is the MD of the Business Development Company, JCS (Yorkshire) Ltd that enables businesses to increase their profit. Recently James was the Chief Executive of Doncaster Rugby Club and is a Board Director for the Doncaster Chamber of Commerce & Enterprise. When is a sale not good business? In the current climate it can be easy for companies to take a sale just because it is a sale. But this is not necessarily the best choice to make. There is a saying that turnover is good, profit is better but cash is king. With this in mind it is important that businesses assess when the sale they make will turn
into cash in their bank account. If a company does not consider this they can leave themselves in danger of being under cash pressure by paying suppliers first and receiving cash afterwards if they receive it at all. Businesses should assess existing and future orders and understand whether they are creating a problem for themselves. There are a number of issues to consider; 1 – Will the sale provide a profit? – understand your prices against your costs. 2 – Can you ensure that you will get paid when you need to be paid? – can you offer early settlement discounts or factor the debt to ensure a portion is received early?
www.localknowledgedoncaster.co.uk
3 – Have strong credit control procedures and use them. Plan a contingency process with a professional when you cannot collect the debt. 4 – Get professional advice. Banks, solicitors, accountants and business advisors, to name a few, can be a great source of advice and professional support. If you find yourself in this situation or are considering how to implement better controls there is help available. Remember a sale isn’t a sale until you can count the cash in your bank. If you would like to discuss ways to improve your business e-mail me on james@jcsyorkshire.co.uk or call me on 07723 096 240.

Attention ISA Investors “How to increase the return on your investments by £76,952” You won’t hear this from the fund management industry. But a number of studies have shown that approximately 80% of actively managed investment funds fail to produce better long term returns than the particular market that they are invested in. In most cases investors would have achieved better performance with an index tracker instead of paying higher fees. One of the best value UK FTSE Index trackers has an annual management charge of just 0.10%. Many managed funds have annual management charges of over 1.5%. These charges, when compounded can make a huge difference to investors’ ultimate returns. Based on the same investment performance and an assumed growth rate of 7% per annum, £10,200 yearly contributions into an ISA over 20 years the investment value at the end of 20 years would be £76,952 higher with the lower cost index tracker, than with the managed fund.
“A very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed money or professionally-managed money” Warren Buffet, worlds richest person 2008
If higher growth was achieved the difference would be greater and the opposite would be true if the growth rate was lower. As with most goals the sooner you plan for them the greater the possibility of achievement and to help you achieve your retirement goals we are currently offering a FREE Investment Planning Consultation. During this consultation you will learn: 10
How we can save you money with your investments How we can help you achieve your investment goals How we use our understanding of the Austrian School of Economics to help our clients increase their wealth How we helped our clients avoid the wealth destruction of the recent financial crisis We GUARANTEE to improve the cost effectiveness of your financial plans. We do this as we are not happy with the value for money offered by many in the financial services industry and it is often the case that your investment needs can be met with better value investments that actually outperform the higher charging funds. Our main business aim is to increase the wealth of our customers, not our own, or that of the fund management industry. To ensure your investment plans are on track we urge you to contact us now on 01302 850040 or info@lewiss.com for your FREE no obligation consultation before the ISA deadline of the 5 April 2010. By leaving computers on all night for a year, a UK company with 10 PCs wastes: 1400kwh £1680 0.83 tons of CO2 emissions.
Through the use of virtualisation, energy efficient PCs / servers and Green IT user policies, Harding AuYong can lower your energy costs and consumption, as well as help demonstrate your commitment to the environment. For example, consolidating 10 of your servers into just 2 could potentially reduce your energy bills by as much as 7K per annum with an environmental benefit of taking 15 cars off the road! It’s good sense to protect our environment by implementing Energy Efficiency solutions. With the continued rise of energy costs and the impact of climate change, the reasons for adopting a greener IT policy have become too good to ignore:
So a computer left on overnight for a year creates enough CO2 emissions to fill a double decker bus! A virtualised infrastructure can reduce energy costs by 80%. A server is typically responsible for 4 tons of CO2 emissions per year. By opting for a Greener PC solution from Harding AuYong you can expect to see up to 80% improvement on energy efficiency. Harding AuYong continues to grow by following trends, improving standard products, listening to the customer and most importantly, working with companies on our doorstep.
• A reduction in power consumption, storage and overheads for the business, lowering your carbon footprint and reducing costs.

Q&a Each month Business & Lifestyle ask a member of the business community a series of questions ranging from personal to business and their views on Doncaster. This month John Carver, Radio presenter from Sine FM answers our probing questions.
John is an Electronics Engineer by trade and has had many and numerous jobs since joining Sine FM. John can be heard on the Bigger All Important Breakfast Show between 8am and 11am on weekdays and he also hosts JC’s Drivetime Show between 5pm and 6pm on weekdays. Sine FM can be heard on 102.6 FM across Doncaster. Personal What’s your best quality?
What advice would you give your teenage self?
I am very conscientious, sometimes too conscientious, and I have the perfect face for radio!
Interesting one, but make sure you commit to doing what you want to do and stick to it. What do people remember about you?
What’s your worst quality? That I’m a nice guy. Trying to do too much in too little time. 14

BUSINESS Business What do you admire in business? I wouldn’t mind being a million behind Bill Gates! Seriously though, he (his company) listens to peoples comments about his products and changes them for the better, like Windows 7. Who’s the most interesting person you have ever interviewed or met? John Peel without a doubt. They say you should never meet your hero but I did! He was exactly how he was on the radio. I remember it was at the Queens Hotel in Leeds. I also remember that he gave me a signed copy of ‘Teenage Kicks’ by the Undertones. On yellow vinyl no less! What’s the best business advice you have been given?
on the streets in Doncaster but a great deal of homeless people are not there by choice. Although work is being done in Doncaster, such as the M25 group more funding and effort should be given to help these people. No-one should have to sleep in doorways in 2010. What’s your favourite place to relax in Doncaster? Without sounding like a walking advert, the most relaxing place in my opinion is Nuffield Health. I can exercise and chill out and forget about everything for a while. I also like various walks around Doncaster to relax. What should Doncaster be remembered for? Doncaster is a great place. It has had it’s fair share of bad press in the past few months but the people of Doncaster do work together as a community and we should be proud of that.
My Uncle John used to encourage me to start my own business. He said it wasn’t a 9 to 5 job, and it was hard work but I should go for it. What are your ambitions? To stay working in radio until they wheel me out (either in a wheelchair or a box!). What’s your secret to success? Sticking at it, commitment, perseverance, keep carrying on no matter what. The traditional ‘stiff upper lip’.
Doncaster Who is your Doncaster Hero? Whilst trying not to be too creepy, Steve Mundin, the creator of Higher Rhythm and Sine FM. He has achieved such a lot in a short space of time. Sine FM really does engage the community. What would you like to improve about Doncaster?
If you can’t afford to repay all your debts you may qualify for a little known and almost unbelievable solution. If you qualify you will only have to repay what you can comfortably afford, meaning that a portion of your debts are written off, along with the interest. If you have debts over £13,500 and a regular household income you may qualify to take advantage of this government legislation to clear your debts. BUSINESS In times of economic difficulty it makes sense for people to work together. We at Business & Lifestyle are playing our part to help by promoting a new business venture each month in conjunction with Success Doncaster. Success Doncaster is available to provide support and guidance to any resident of Doncaster regardless of their background. Help available ranges from support for new and existing businesses, guidance on retraining, help with finding a job and advice on financial issues for individuals and businesses.
Splash Painting and Decorating Success Doncaster enables residents of the Borough to realise their full potential. The programme can help clients overcome barriers to help them reach their goals in starting a business, learning new skills and finding employment. Nicky Clements was long term unemployed and on incapacity benefits, when she decided she would start her own painting and decorating business. Nicky from Cantley has progressed a long way since then and has overcome many barriers along the way. Nicky is hard of hearing and found this had prevented her finding suitable employment in the past. She decided the best way to start work was to set up her own business in what she was good at - painting and decorating. Her business is called Splash. Coming to Success Doncaster for help, Nicky was referred to Doncaster Chamber for business start-up advice. She was also referred to Donbac to apply for a Success Doncaster loan fund to enable her to purchase a van for her business and at the same time she received one 16
to one help and advice on her personal finances from the Finance Friends strand of the programme. Nicky’s Business Advisor said she is a true inspiration to herself and to others and she is determined to make her business work. She realises that it is not very common to see female painters and decorators and has made contacts with a female plumber she knows who has agreed to refer customers on to her and vice versa. Nicky is now aiming to provide her services to the deaf community in Doncaster as well as concentrating on providing a service to the elderly. Internet Marketing “So you want to have a successful Business?” In order to really succeed with marketing online, once you’ve got your foundations in place you really then need to think about getting links to your website from elsewhere on the world wide web. Now there are some ‘quick wins’ that can be achieved, directory listings, links from suppliers, business associates and customers, but for longevity you need to be thinking about other areas on the web where you can place links to your website. The trouble is a lot of these links will require some content. For example you might want to use some of these tools in order to get links: A blog: Well you need to think about how frequently you can update it and what you’re going to write about. Video: What is your video going to be about? How many are you going to make? Articles: How frequently, where are you going to place them? Press Releases: Again, how frequently and where are they going? Newsletters: What are you going to say every month?
So What is a Content Strategy? Well put simply its a plan that will determine the creation and publication of relevant content that will: • Be a useful resource for your target market and customers • Drive traffic to your website via links Its that simple to define, but not always so easy to carry out. Simply get in touch with IRUN, we are more than happy to sit down and talk to you about what you want to achieve, large or small, there is an effective and affordable solution for you all, one that will get visitors into your website.

How can being overweight increase the risk of cancer? In this month’s issue Vivienne highlights the link between body fat and the risk of developing oestrogen dependant cancers including that of breast, endometrium and prostate.
How can being overweight increase the risk of cancer? Oestrogen is a natural hormone present in larger quantities in females of child baring age than any other sector of the population.
18
What can I do to reduce my risk? Phytoestrogens block the attack from oestrogens to protect the body. These can be found in pulses, beans, peas, chickpeas, green vegetables, carrots, red peppers, broccoli, cabbage and herbs. Eating more of these foods will help reduce the risk of this type of cancer, and it is hardly suprising that vegetarians who include these foods daily have half the cancer rates of meat eaters. Reducing body fat reduces the production and storage of oestrogen, so weight loss has a beneficial effect. (Oestrogens from plastics, cleaning agents, inner city recycled water supplies and beauty products are also cause for concern). The Mousey Guide to ... Memory What is Memory? In the IT world memory is actually known as RAM (or Random Access Memory if you’re interested!). Despite it’s name, it actually has nothing to do with the files stored on your computer or laptop (your data lives on your Hard Drive). Think of memory as the tool which helps information flow from the computer’s brain (hard drive) to your screen. The speed of this flow is greatly determined by the capacity of the memory. The poor memory also gets an onslaught from Microsoft itself. It is essential that Microsoft updates Windows regularly to iron out bugs and patch up security loopholes. However the flip side of this is that as Windows grows and updates, it’s memory requirements increase, and systems start to slow down as there is a greater flow of information. So the laptop or PC you bought 18 months ago may be struggling to warm up in the morning, and it might feel slow whilst typing a word document or internet browsing. Putting more memory in is usually a cost effective and easy fix for a slow PC or laptop.
wireless signal can travel far beyond the walls of your home or office, and we’re sure you don’t want anybody else having free access to your network and broadband. Browsing Habits Where possible only visit reputable websites, especially when buying or banking. When making purchases or transactions, look out for the padlock symbol appearing. This indicates that the transaction will be secure and encrypted. If there isn’t one there, you could be at risk! Phishing emails The process of fraudulently sending out emails in order to acquire information such as user names and passwords is known as “phishing”. They are usually sent in the guise of a trustworthy source such as a bank or social networking website. Millions of these emails are sent out daily, so there is little doubt that you will have received these types of emails from time to time. Some are easier to spot than others, so here are some tips:
• Use the spam filter from your email provider • Look out for spelling mistakes or poor grammar • NEVER click on a link provided in the email. If in doubt open your browser and type in the web address yourself and check to make sure that the website is using encryption (remember about that padlock I just told you about!) Firstly as we have had this extended cold snap heating bills will be larger than normal so do what you can to save where possible. Check your controls - set them properly. Try dropping the room stat down just a degree or two. You will be surprised what a difference it makes.
On the financial side the Boiler Scrappage Scheme is in full flow and is easy to access. Check last month’s article for how to find if you are eligible or give Waveform a call for more information.
If you have TRV’s on your radiators turn them down on rooms you don’t use that much. Make sure your doors and windows are sealed well. Draught excluders may not be the coolest thing on earth but they can help. Check the flap on the letter box. Does it close after the junk mail has come through the door? The same goes for cat flaps and the like. If your home isn’t leaking like a sieve it will be cheaper to heat.

The government has also announced the figures for the “feed in tariff” scheme. This is where you can get paid for generating power using either solar cells or wind turbines. They have said you could get up to 48p for each kilowatt hour (kWh) you produce. It is likely that similar rebates will be available for heat pumps, solar hot water and other renewable technologies. If you need any help or advice give us a call or drop a quick email to info@waveformservices.co.uk We will be happy to help where we can.

Compost
Corner Welcome to Compost Corner, the Business & Lifestyle monthly gardening column. Jobs for March The nights are getting lighter, the weather is getting warmer (slightly) and we all remember we have a garden again! So a few topics to cover. As we are into March and the threat of severe, prolonged frost and snow has passed (hopefully) the time is right for you to have a look at your own garden to see if any damage has been caused by the unusually cold weather. On my travels I have seen Phormiums, Cordylines and Fatsia japonicas to name just a few that appear to have been damaged by the cold Winter. There isn’t time to go into more detail here but if anyone has any questions about shrubs or plants that don’t look too well
please give me a call. I am only too willing to answer any queries. Lawn Care After a long cold Winter the lawn begins to come to life this month. As soon as the grass has started to grow, and the weather and ground conditions are good, give the lawn a good rake to remove leaves and debris. Do not brush too vigorously at this stage as this could damage the grass. After the severe frosts it is a good idea to settle the turf with a light rolling. A cylinder mower with the cutting head set high is a good method. The first cut should merely take the top off the grass - close cutting at this stage could result in severe yellowing. Choose a day when
www.localknowledgedoncaster.co.uk
the surface is dry. Two cuts should be enough this month. Feeding and weeding and scarifying I would leave until next month when the ground has firmed up a little more and the weeds and grass are actively growing. Feeding Plants Spring is an ideal time to feed plants young and old. The roots are coming back to life and the plant can now readily absorb food giving them a good start to the growing season. Buy a good general purpose plant food and follow the application instructions. If you have any ideas you wish to discuss with me or questions to ask I can be contacted on: 07889 858767 or 01302 865075. Love Pete

This month’s Local Hero - John Holmes “When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather” - Samuel Johnson We have had quite a few people mentioning about an unsung hero living in Cantley. Over the past couple of months he has really come into his own with his unique service to the people of Doncaster. John Holmes created his own weather website called ‘John Holmes Weather Station’ which gives up-to-date and more importantly LOCAL information about the weather right here in Doncaster. I know that he has helped out many people who would have previously been caught up in the very snowy and icy conditions since just before Christmas. Many people around Doncaster look at his website on a weekly, and sometimes even daily basis. We do not want to give his exact location away as he would have a constant stream of people knocking on his door but his back garden is a mini weather station! We allow John to explain about himself and his website: “I first became interested in the weather as a teenager when I was given a Max/Min thermometer. Rather than go to University I elected to leave
school at 17 and joined the Meteorological Office as a weather observer. National Service soon came along and I was lucky enough to be able to do the same job, once the square bashing part was out of the way! Most of the time I spent at RAF Nicosia in Cyprus. On return to civilian life I took quite some time to get the necessary qualifications to be accepted as a forecaster. During that time I was on various RAF stations then civil aviation airfields. My last 20 years or so were spent forecasting in a whole variety of locations in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Graphical representations of most of these elements are shown on the right for the past 24 hours. Go to Statistics and click on weekly graphs and the past week is shown for the main elements”. Why diets DON’T work and what to do about it! “Dieting is not effective in controlling weight. You can get a temporary weight loss with a diet, but each scheme ultimately gives way to weight gain, and subsequent losses become increasingly difficult. Worst of all, you get progressively fatter on less food. Dieting actually makes you fatter!” Dr. Lawrence Lamb, Author of “The Weighting Game: The truth about weight control.” Diets Never Work
simply too “smart” for the restrictive very low calorie diet approach to ever work.
Let’s begin by defining the word “diet.” A “diet” is any severe restriction of food or calories that’s temporary. Most conventional diet programs call for extremely low calories: 800-1200 or less for women and 1500-1800 or less for men. Any time you restrict calories drastically like this, you will lose weight. So if your only criteria for success is weight loss, and you don’t care where the weight comes from, or how long it stays off, then you could say that “all diets work.” There are two major problems with this approach: First, the weight loss from very low calorie dieting almost never lasts; 95% of the people who lose weight on conventional diet programs can’t keep it off and are actually likely to gain more weight than when they started once they come ‘off’ the diet. The second problem is that most of the weight you lose from low calorie dieting is muscle, not fat. If permanent fat loss without losing your muscle is your goal (it should be), then it would be closer to the truth to say “diets never work.” There’s a valid scientific reason why most diets fail dismally. Most people make the classic mistake of trying to “starve” their body-fat with strict diets. However, because the human body has a complex and infallible series of defense mechanisms to protect you from starvation, it’s physiologically impossible to permanently lose fat with very low calorie diets. As soon as your body senses a food shortage, these defense mechanisms start to kick in. The human body is
30
6 Reasons to avoid very low calorie diets! 1. Very low calorie diets slow down your metabolic rate. The lower your calories, the slower your metabolism becomes. Simply put; when you eat less, your body burns less. When you eat more, your body burns more. 2. Very low calorie diets make you lose muscle. Muscle is responsible for burning your body-fat so this is very bad news to someone wanting to get rid of their ‘wobbly-bits!’ 3. Very low calorie diets increase the activity of fat-storing enzymes and decrease the activity of fat burning enzymes. In other words, when you don’t eat enough, your body changes its chemistry to make it easier to store fat in the future. 4. Very Low calorie dieting increases the chance of rebound weight gain. It often goes like this: Initial weight loss, then a plateau is hit. It becomes harder to lose more weight so less food is eaten. Once the insatiable hunger pangs kick in the diet is stopped due to frustration. The weight creeps back on and the body-fat ends up were they started only this time they have less muscle tissue with a slower metabolic rate which can lead to their fat exceeding it’s start point before the diet…nightmare! It’s better known as yo-yoing!

lifestyle 5. Very low calorie diets increase appetite and cravings. When your body goes into starvation mode, this triggers increased appetite and cravings in an attempt to get you to eat more food. The hunger and cravings can be so strong that you become ravenous. It’s virtually impossible to stay on a diet when you are voraciously hungry and all you can think about is food. Few people have that much willpower. 6. Very low calorie diets decrease your energy and work capacity. Low calorie diets leave you tired, lethargic and unable to sustain high levels of activity or workouts. The ability to train aerobically and with weights is critical for your long-term success at fat loss.

This is a great website that will allow users to search for alternative landline and freephone telephone numbers. And if you so happen to know some alternative phone numbers yourself, you can submit these to the site. So it need no longer cost you a small fortune to contact your bank, insurance company or ISP. Each month Business & Lifestyle will support a charity nominated by one of our advertisers or readers.
500 Bunnies to run across Town Field for Children’s Charity on Easter Weekend The event, dubbed “Doncaster Bunny Run”, will take place on Saturday 3rd April at 10.00am. Up to 500 participants, dressed as bunnies will complete a one mile race in support of South Yorkshire Children’s Charity, SAFE@LAST (www.safe@last.org.uk). The event is being organised by local recruitment agency, Austin Banks. SAFE@LAST works to help children and young people who are at risk through running away. It aims to intervene to protect them from what they are potentially running towards and what they are running away from. The service was set up in 1998 to support the 1 in 9 children in South Yorkshire that are affected. Since 2005, the charity has
worked with over 4000 young people and provides the only secure refuge outside London for under 16 year olds. The proceeds from the Bunny Run will be used to help SAFE@LAST launch its preventative education program in Doncaster – a program which has already been successfully rolled out in Rotherham. A key part of the education work is the promotion of the charity’s 24 hour helpline number at local schools a confidential service which allows young people to discuss their problems and where appropriate access a trained project worker to help them resolve their issue around running away. Event organiser, James Squires of Austin Banks Ltd, states:
“Having seen SAFE@LAST in action at the Lifewise Centre in Magna, I was disappointed to learn that Doncaster schools were not yet involved and decided to help SAFE@LAST promote its services in the town. The Bunny Run will be the first of two events this year – a family, fun event with an Easter theme where participants can enjoy a one mile fun run, food, drink, entertainment and competitions. Our aim is to attract 500 participants and for each of them to raise a minimum of £10 in sponsorship. As well as raising funds we hope to highlight the benefits of the preventative education work to the relevant authorities in Doncaster. Later in the year, we are planning a white collar boxing event where MDs of Doncaster companies will go head to head in the ring”. For more information on Doncaster’s first Bunny Run and to reserve your place, visit www.doncasterbunnyrun.co.uk or contact James Squires at Austin Banks Ltd on: 01302 822 228.
As part of our philosophy of giving back to the community, we are supporting charitable organisations that have provided us with services that money can’t buy. Many of us have relied on these organisations in the past. They all rely heavily on us for donations and supporting fundraising activities. So let’s give something back!! In each issue we are going to provide a
feature for that charity, to enable them to benefit from free publicity to raise their profile within Doncaster. So if you want to help in any way, or want to say thanks to a particular charity, please contact us and see what we can achieve together.

John Kettley is a weather man and so is .... ‘John Holmes’! Well we all know what weather we have experienced over the past few weeks but what might the weather hold for the future? But first a quick summary of this winter. It has been the wintriest for over 25 years in the Doncaster areamore snow, days of it falling and lying along with more frosts than usual. It’s turning out to be the 6th wintriest in over 60 years of data. Only the exceptional winters of 1946-47, 1962-63, 1978-79, 1955-56 and 198182 being worse. So we could describe it as an ‘old style’ winter I suppose, at least for those of us old enough to remember all those dates above! To the future? March is traditionally the start of Spring-bulbs trees beginning to bud etc and temperatures starting the hoped for upward trend? This year and March looks like starting with below average temperatures on most days, rather than above, with further frosts likely some nights and dare we mention the word, an occasional day with snow? Not that usually, this winter apart, that Doncaster gets much snow. But then we probably all remember last Easter Sunday being white, at least for a time. I’m not predicting what this Easter might be though. The overall weather pattern seems to suggest that the cold weather is likely to hang around well into March. Some dry days with sunshine after early morning fog and frost seem the most probable idea with high pressure over or close to the country for a time. Later on, say from
about the second week, then much more unsettled and changeable with milder weather tending to be more dominant than cold.
One way of showing the idea of warmth, cold is as a %. So let’s try this: Temperature=60% of the time below average in the first two weeks and then for the remainder of the month 70% of the time above average. I’m not sure about being able to do the same with precipitation as at this time of the year it’s even more complex than in the summer due to the risk of snow as well as rain, so I’ll leave that until the summer!
