Independence Day!

F

“We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:2,3, NASB)

irst and foremost let me wish each one of you a belated Happy Independence Day! India is celebrating its 69th Independence Day. It is indeed a great joy for each one of us to live in a country which has a vibrant democracy. Freedom is something that we cannot take for granted. We are grateful to God for our freedom fighters who have enabled us to break free from the bondage of the British. Over these past 69 years India has grown in leaps and bounds in the area of Science and Technology, particularly in the field of IT. While on one side India has progressed rapidly, on the other side the gap between the rich and the poor has widened substantially and poverty is very much an issue and that we need to address. Nehru gave a “Tryst with Destiny” speech at the night we received independence. I would like to point to one key portion of the speech, optimism. But also we cannot ignore our countrymen’s cynicism. If anyone talked like Nehru today, we’d laugh… and certainly not believe him. But going to the Bible, I would like to draw your attention to Romans 8:18-25: “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently”. Today it is easy for Christians to look at that text and feel it applies only to an unseen future. However, Paul was filled with optimism about the hope that was ALREADY here… and only just beginning. Like, Nehru, therefore, we need to capture a new optimism about our country, and about our faith. Most importantly it should be an integration of our faith with the love for our country. That integration of vision must be a hope for our country, and a hope for a better world; all within the hope that we have in Christ Jesus. Because of Jesus, we share in Nehru’s vision. And because of Jesus, we still have hope.

want to consider a passage of Scripture that many people know and can say by heart, John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This passage says, “For God …” Have you ever sat down and just thought about who God is? You can't prove God in a test tube. You can't

“the love of god” Dr. Billy Graham

prove God in a laboratory. You cannot put God on a computer screen. But that doesn't mean that He's not real. The Bible teaches that He's the Creator. He created the whole universe. This universe is so vast and so big, it's beyond the human mind to comprehend it. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). He made it all! The Bible says God is speaking. And God is saying, “I love you. I love you. I love you. Whoever you are, whatever your circumstances, I love you!” And becauSeptember 2015 se God is love, there's hope tonight in our hearts. 4

God reveals Himself in nature. Look about you. He reveals Himself in conscience—that little voice inside that sets off an alarm when you do wrong. He reveals Himself in the Bible. But He also reveals Himself fully in Jesus Christ because when you look at Jesus, you're looking at the God-man. He was God incarnate. The Bible says: “God … has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:12). I want to tell you, if God created you and me, He can fix us when we get broken. And we're broken! We need fixing. Christ can fix us, if we'll let Him. You can have peace with God today. Want to know more? Find peace. God is not only the Creator, but “God is Spirit” (John 4:24). God is not confined to a body like you or me. God is a Spirit. He can be everywhere at the same time. God is also unchanging. The Bible says, “I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6). In all these centuries God has not changed. “There is no variation or shadow of turning [with him]” (James 1:17). The Bible teaches that God is also holy. “The Lord is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works” (Psalm 145:17). The Bible also teaches that God is a God of judgment. The Bible says, “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). The Bible says, “God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing” (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Everything you've ever done, everything you've ever thought, all the thoughts and intents of your heart are someday going to be exposed at the judgment. There is a day of judgment coming! And Jesus said repent, turn, change because of the judgment. (to be contd...)

DID THE APOSTLES CONTRADICT CHRIST’S TEACHINGS? By John Stanek

D

id you know that Jesus never wrote anything about theology? I believe that just about every religious leader that has ever lived wrote down the revelations that he received from God or had them written down, so his future followers would have his rules to follow. Jesus, on the other hand, while he was alive went around healing the sick and raising the dead and offending the religious authorities of his time, but He did not write anything. He made statements to his disciples about why He had come, what He would accomplish, how He would be crucified, die and be resurrected from the dead, but although they were with Him for three years they did not really understand what He was all about, because they did not yet possess the Holy Spirit. The more I ponder on what Jesus said and did during His life time, the more I am convinced that His immediate purpose was not to teach theology, but to prove to the people and His disciples that He was truly from God through His miracles, and by his resurrection from the dead. Theology and evangelism He left to be completed by His disciples, which is totally different from any other religion’s beginnings, because Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to remind them exactly what He had said to them and to open their understanding concerning the Word of God and the mysteries of God. Since He sent the Holy Spirit He did not have to worry about them forgetting His teachings or getting them mixed up and that’s why He didn’t write them down Himself. I believe that is why we have apparent contradictions between what Jesus is reported to have said and what the apostles said as far as how we should live. There are liberal scholars

who say that Christian doctrine evolved through time, changing as society changed and because the disciples later dealt with societies other than the Jewish society. This of course, gives them the excuse to change Christian beliefs today to what they want them to be and to destroy the idea of the inspiration of the Scriptures. They point out differences in what Jesus taught and what Paul and the other apostles taught, saying that their letters differ in doctrine from what Jesus Himself taught. Now, the truth is that what Jesus said and what the apostles said later at times appear at odds. I have thought about this and have come to some conclusions that I believe answer these seeming discrepancies. If you look at Paul’s writings, he speaks of God’s sovereign election of believers, which seems to correspond with what is written in the old testament about how He selected the Jews as His chosen race in deference to all the other nations, in His selection of Jacob over Esau, and then again in the new testament the choosing of Paul for salvation, even though Paul persecuted His church. But people who do not like that doctrine go back to Jesus’ saying that, ‘Whosoever will, will be saved,’ therefore indicating that God lays aside his sovereign will in deference to our free will and allows us to either accept or reject his offer of salvation. Now some proponents of this view say that we must take what Jesus said over what Paul said, because Paul was speaking to the gentile community. But they September 2015 have it backwards, for the (continued on page 6...) 5

Words of St. Augustine ® Other sins find their vent in the accomplishment of evil deeds,

whereas pride lies in wait for good deeds, to destroy them. ® It is not that we keep His commandments first, and that then He

loves; but that He loves us, and then we keep His commandments. This is that grace, which is revealed to the humble, but hidden from the proud. ® Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless

until they find their rest in thee. continued from page 5

Jews would have more easily believed in the idea of election than the gentiles. Since Jesus spoke almost exclusively to the Jews, His message of free choice to a race of chosen people would not have made much sense. So, what do we say to this debate? If you take the position that we must go back to what Jesus says as doctrine, then I think you must be consistent. Jesus said a lot of things that I do not think that even the strongest proponents of observing His teachings would practice, such as, ‘if your right eye offends you, pluck it out’. Where is the dogmatic following of His words now? Or if we see how He insults the Jewish leaders of His day, yet He tells us later not to offend people. Robert Stein in his book, ‘Difficult Passages in the New Testament ’, talks about the difficulties created by some of Jesus’ sayings, which consist of hyperbole and exaggerations.’ How then do we rectify these and apparent contradictions? I think that we can only make sense of all of this when we realize that Jesus did not come to develop hard and fast rules of theology during his lifetime, but simply to let people know who he was, who his Father was, to select the men who would evangelize the world, September 2015 and to die for our sins. Many of his sayings were 6

extreme in order to get men’s attention and reinforce certain principles and to get the religious leaders to crucify him. I further believe that Jesus’ purpose was not to establish hard and fast theology during his lifetime, because if it were, He would have dictated it, so there would be not question about it; but His plan was to establish it through the inspiration of certain of His apostles after His death and through Paul, James, Mark, Luke and Jude. I base this on what Paul has told us, namely that God had kept His eternal plan a mystery for ages and now was revealing His will to men through men inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus had said that even greater things would be accomplished through his followers than He ever had accomplished while on earth and they did, through the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Only then was God’s words, purposes and promises written down so we might know them. The theology of God was written down by the apostles not Jesus, since that was not His job to do. His job was to raise up disciples, train them and die for our sins, so that we might be saved. And while it may seem to some that Christian doctrine evolved over the years immediately following Jesus’ death, it really was God revealing His mysteries to them through the Holy Spirit and not the apostles making the doctrine more palpable for each society that they encountered. m m

Evangelical Distinctives By Dr. Alexander Kurian

“It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tim.1:15).

W

hat is an evangelical Christian? What exactly is evangelical Christianity? What do evangelicals believe? A simple answer to the question is evangelicals take the Bible seriously as the Word of God and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The term “evangelical” comes from the Greek word euangelion, meaning ‘the good news” (Gospel). Thus evangelical faith focuses on the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The Savior and the Scriptures (The Holy Bible) are vitally important in evangelical faith. As commonly used, Evangelical Christianity refers to conservative Protestants. Millard J. Erickson, a Baptist theologian, offers a simple and concise definition of evangelicalism: “A movement in modern Christianity emphasizing the gospel of forgiveness and regeneration through personal faith in Jesus Christ, and affirming orthodox doctrines” (Concise Dictionary of Christian Theology, Baker, 1986, 52). Alister McGrath, an evangelical Anglican, offered six major distinctives of Evangelical Christianity: 1. The supreme authority of Scripture 2. Jesus Christ as incarnate God 3. The Holy Spirit 4. Personal conversion 5. Evangelism 6. The importance of the Christian community (Evangelicalism and the Future of Christianity, IVP, 1995, 55-56).

Historian David Bebbington identifies four qualities as the main evangelical convictions: 1. Biblicism, a particular regard for the Bible. 2. Crucicentrism, a focus on the atoning work of Christ on the cross. 3. Conversionism, the belief that human beings need to be converted. 4. Activism, the belief that the gospel needs to be expressed in effort. (Evangelicalism in Modern Britain: A History from the 1730s to the 1980s, Unwyn Hyman, 1989, 217). In reality, all true Christians are evangelical Christians. They believe in the evangel, the good news that Jesus Christ is the only Savior of mankind. There is no better news than Jesus! The Fundamentals of the Faith Along with all conservative evangelical Christians, the Brethren affirmthe fundamentals of the historic Christian faith as outlined below: 1. The full Inspiration (verbal-plenary), inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible. 2. Virgin Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. 3. The death of Christ on the cross as substitutionary atonement. 4. The literal resurrection of Christ from the dead. 5. The deity and sinless humanity of Jesus Christ. 6. Salvation by grace through faith alone. September 2015 (continued on page 22...) 7

Forgiveness is a choice to let go of our resentment towards others and to start loving them as Christ does. Finding forgiveness for someone who deeply hurt you may be hard to do, but God tells us that forgiveness has no limits. We must learn to forgive just as Jesus forgave us. There is a freedom that comes from letting go of bitterness or resentment. Thus it would teach us to restore relationships through the act of forgiveness. Forgiveness involves feelings of anger, revenge, resentment, hurt, hostility, sadness, bitterness, retaliation or retribution. At the same time, depending on whether we are seeking forgiveness, are asked to forgive someone else or forgive ourselves, it can also involve reconciliation, compromise, concessions, contrition, atonement, repentance or redemption. As we are pondering upon the term ‘forgiveness’, would like to propose this article with few most suitable ways to be able to forgive from a Christian perspective:Let Go Of The Anger – Holding on to the anger that may be associated with an incident or experience that causes us hurt, can lead to hate, and perhaps a lingering desire for retaliation or revenge. Don’t Be Stubborn - For some reason, it seems to be a lot easier to hold on to the anger and hurt feelings associated with an injustice, and we can become comfortable with the feeling of retribution because we somehow want to punish the person that hurt us. We feel justified in our anger with the other person, so we feel that we have every right to be stubborn and locked into the position we are taking. September 2015

Focus On The Future Usually what has been done cannot be undone

Forgive and Forget! Sonia Rachel Abraham and dwellin g on the past only perpetuates the hurt feelings that resulted from what caused the problem in the first place. Continually bringing up sore points or issues of the past will only make the rift larger. In most cases, we may have an on-going relationship with the person that may have hurt us. Be Reasonable in Your Expectations of Others – In the midst of anger, our emotions are high and frequently our judgment of fairness is clouded. We expect others to recognize the injustice they have done, and apologize immediately and profusely. We want the person to atone to us in some elaborate or excessive manner. Most acts or words that hurt us are not done intentionally, so frequently a person may not even know that they have done something to hurt you, and in such cases we may have unreasonable expectations of their behaviour. Examine Your Heart – Look within yourself to see if you are contributing to situations that you may later regret and will need to seek forgiveness. Think before you speak. While we have a constitutional right to the freedom of speech, we do not have an inalienable right to say what ever we want, any time we want, particularly if it may be hurtful. Would you be willing to forgive someone for the same offense you committed against someone else? (continued on page 10...)

Dear, “In a loud voice they sang: ‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!’” Revelation 5:12 In heaven, not only will our sufferings win us merit, the sufferings of Jesus will have an eternal perspective, too. Our Lord will be honored as the slain Lamb. His sufferings will never be forgotten. Unlike us, He will always visibly bare His wounds to the universe, and for that, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit will enjoy praise as never before! If any dark demon in the corner of the universe ever doubted the righteousness of God in stooping to rescue debased sinners, he’ll be set straight. No evil spirit will dare accuse God of having defiled His purity in order to redeem wicked men. No one will question God’s righteous reputation for having condescended to save sinners. God’s righteousness will be beyond question! In fact, the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus was of such massive worth and supreme value, that God’s righteousness

will shine even brighter. For it will be shown that God in His wisdom was able to rescue sinners, redeem suffering, crush the rebellion, restore all things, vindicate His holy name, and provide restitution...and come out all the more glorious for it! Heaven will show this. And we will praise Him for it for all of eternity. You have something eternally precious in common with Christ-suffering! In heaven you won’t praise the suffering, but you will praise the wisdom and the power of God in using it to drive you to the cross, as well as showcase His righteousness and mercy for all of eternity. How unsearchable is Your wisdom, O God! I praise You for Your awesome plan of salvation and the way You use affliction to showcase Your mercy and grace. I look forward to heaven where it will all be made plain! Blessings, Joni and Friends

Forgive and Forget! continued from page 8

Let Forgiveness Become An Everyday Practice – What a transforming experience it would be in our lives if we were able to forgive someone immediately upon them committing the offense – without hanging on to the anger for a much longer period of time. This might be possible if we let forgiveness become an integral part of our lives and a guiding value to live by. It takes a lot of energy to maintain resentment, anger or distrust. Instead of holding on to those negative feelings, why not refocus and redirect that energy into making a contribution of time and effort to a special cause or ministry? Why not use the September 2015 energy to serve God? Count your blessings! 10

Remember the good things about your life and don’t dwell on hurt feelings. Let forgiveness become an essential part of your life. Ask God For Guidance – Being able to forgive or seek forgiveness is not just an intellectual decision, but there is also a spiritual dimension involved.

Above all, while God has already forgiven us for our sins, we must continually ask for His forgiveness in order for us to model His love. Forgiveness ensures the presence of God in our lives. As Christ died on the cross for our sins, we receive divine forgiveness from Him. Let’s look up unto Him for the courage and strength in our personal quest associated with forgiveness whether we are seeking forgiveness from others, giving forgiveness to others, or working on forgiving ourselves. m m

Mission: A Mandate from God By Susanta Patra

Our country is a country of countries with around 1.2 billion people! I would like to divide India into three parts - the South, the North and the North East areas. According to the official census, the Christian population stands at 2.3%. South India consists of 5 states - Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Pudducherry and Karnataka with a population of about 240 million. Over 76% of Indian Christians reside in these states. The North-East has 7 states Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Assam with a population of 40 Million people and 13% of Indian Christians reside in this region. Except Assam, all the other states are smaller in population. The remaining region is identified as North India with the larger states Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Jammu Kashmir and West Bengal with a population of over 720 Million people. Only 11% of the Christians come from this area. When analyzing the status of the Indian Church Mission, we need to look at several angles. This analysis will provide a picture of the global church mission as the Indian Church is the replica of the Global Church Mission. Spiritual growth A significant development of Indian Church Mission during last several years is the lifestyle and spiritual leadership being modelled by our 55,000 Indian missionaries who are impacting their communities through their godly lives and bold testimonies. Indian missionaries have not just proved their leadership abilities in the

global scenario, but have exemplified Christ by their integrity, love and sacrifice for the people in their area. Numerical growth As Indians, we thank God for the numerical growth in terms of mission workers, missions, response to the Gospel and new believers. 1. Number of Workers: In 1947, there were 313 known cross-cultural Indian missionaries. Rapid growth followed. In 1980 - 2208, 1983 3369, 1988 - 10243, 1994 - 12,000, 2005 35,000+ and in 2010 - 55,000 workers. As the number of missionaries grew, more areas could be reached with the Gospel. 2. Number of Missions: In 1947, 6 missions were recognized. In 1972, 26 were recognized mission and approximately 220 smaller missions were formed. In 1980, it grew to 75 recognized missions and 345 others. In 1983 94/415,1988 -124/600, 1994 -169/750,2005 200/1000 and 2010 - 236/1800+ 3. Number of Responses: As the number of missionaries grew, the responses to the Gospel grew. More people heard the message so more people responded to the Gospel. This growth is usually estimated in various ways and forms. 4. Number of Missionary Training Institutes: Indian Missionary Training has played a major role in the growth of missions. As the missions, missionaries, and responses to the Gospel grew, missionary training institutes increased simultaneously. In 1950, there were 2 recognized missionary training institutions. This grew to 6 in 1960, 7in 1970,15 in 1980, 23 in1985, September 2015 34 in 1990, 58 in 1995, 80 (continued on page 12...) 11

TRIBULATION--FUNDAMENTAL CHRISTIAN RIGHT By Jacob Mathew

“In the world ye shall have tribulation.”--John 16:33 Are you asking the reason of this, believer? Look upward to your heavenly Father, and behold Him pure and holy. Do you know that you are one day to be like Him? Will you easily be conformed to his image? Will you not require much refining in the furnace of affliction to purify you? Will it be an easy thing to get rid of your corruptions, and make you perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect? Next, Christian, turn you eye downward. Dost thou know what foes thou hast beneath thy feet? Thou wast once a servant of Satan, and no king will willingly lose his subjects. Dost thou think that Satan will let thee alone? No, he will be always at thee, for he “geoth about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Expect trouble, therefore, Christian, when thou lookest beneath thee. Then look around thee. Where art thou? Thou art in an enemy’s country, a stranger and a sojourner. The world is not thy friend. If it be, then thou art not God’s friend, for he who is the friend of the world is the enemy of God. Be assured that thou shalt find foeman everywhere. When thou sleepest, think that thou art resting on the battlefield; when thou walkest, suspect an ambush in every hedge. As mosquitoes are said to bite strangers more than natives, so will the trials of earth be sharpest to you. Lastly, look within thee, into thine own heart and observe what is there. Sin and self are still within. If thou hadst no devil to tempt thee, no enemies to fight thee, and no world to ensnare thee, thou wouldst still find in thyself evil enough to be a sore trouble to thee, for “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” Expect trouble then, but despond not on account of it, for God is with thee to help and to strengthen thee. He hath said, I will be with thee in trouble, I will deliver thee and honor thee.” continued from page 11

in 1999 and today we have around 190 institutions. Geographical Growth God is continuing to enlarging our territories from South India to North India, from concentrating on tribal Indians to focusing on high caste/class Indians, from the reachable Indians to influential Indians, from responsive rural region to September 2015 hungry urbanites, from full-time missionar y 12

endeavors to tent-making missions, from pioneering mission outreach to strategic mission movements and from church- based mission to the market place missions. These changes continue to create a tremendous geographical growth in Indian Missions. From Kashmir in the north, Gujarat in the West, Ar unachal Pradesh in the East and Kanyakumari, Lakshwadeep and Andaman & 1 Nicobar Islands in the south, Indian Mission history has been unique. Today the various challenges faced in India is seen and experienced everywhere in the world. m m

God Works in Mysterious Ways (contd...)

“Are you hoping to hire on there for awhile?”

“I’ll be there!” was my reply.

“No, I just figure I should go there. I figure someone under that star right there needs a Bible, so that’s where I’m going next.” He smiled, and the warmth of his spirit radiated the sincerity of his mission.

He began his journey again. He headed away with his sign dangling from his bed roll and pack of Bibles. He stopped, turned and said, “When you see something that makes you think of me, will you pray for me?”

I drove him back to the town-square where we’d met two hours earlier, and as we drove, it started raining. We parked and unloaded his things.

“You bet,” I shouted back, “God bless.”

Would you sign my autograph book?” he asked. “I like to keep messages from folks I meet.” I wrote in his little book that his commitment to his calling had touched my life. I encouraged him to stay strong. And I left him with a verse of scripture from Jeremiah, “I know the plans I have for you,” declared the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a future and a hope.” “Thanks, man,” he said. “I know we just met and we’re really just strangers, but I love you.” “I know,” I said, “I love you, too.” “The Lord is good.” “Yes, He is. How long has it been since someone hugged you?” I asked. “A long time,” he replied. And so on the busy street corner in the drizzling rain, my new friend and I embraced, and I felt deep inside that I had been changed. He put his things on his back, smiled his winning smile and said, “See you in the New Jerusalem.”

“God bless.” And that was the last I saw of him. Late that evening as I left my office, the wind blew strong. The cold front had settled hard upon the town. I bundled up and hurried to my car. As I sat back and reached for the emergency brake, I saw them... a pair of well-worn brown work gloves neatly laid over the length of the handle. I picked them up and thought of my friend and wondered if his hands would stay warm that night without them. I remembered his words: “If you see something that makes you think of me, will you pray for me?” Today his gloves lie on my desk in my office. They help me to see the world and its people in a new way, and they help me remember those two hours with my unique friend and to pray for his ministry. “See you in the New Jerusalem,” he said. Yes, Daniel, I know I will. —— “I shall pass this way but once. Therefore, any good that I can do or any kindness that I can show, let me do it now, September 2015 for I shall not pass this way again.” m m 13

U.S. Demands China Release Detained Christian Lawyer China: The United States demanded this week that China release a Christian lawyer along with other religious officials who were detained in August. According to the Associated Press, the lawyer and the other roughly 10 religious officials were detained just before a meeting with a visiting senior U.S. diplomat. The U.S. also called on China to release female political prisoners. David Saperstein, the U.S. ambassador at-large for religious freedom, was supposed to meet with Christian attorney Zhang Kai and the other religious officials on Aug. 26. The Christians and other officials were detained on Aug. 25. He said the actions were “outrageous.” Zhang had been working with churches in China that were resisting government orders to remove crosses. Local Christians reported that police had detained at least 11 pastors and church members last week. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, has also asked for the release of 20 women prisoners of conscience. Three are imprisoned in China. ‘Kandhamal’ tells the whole story of anti-Christian persecution

Kandhamal is a district of the eastern Indian state of Odisha, formerly known as Orissa, where an orgy of violence descended upon the impoverished Christian minority in August, 2008. A series of riots roughly 100 people dead, thousands injured, 300 churches and 6,000 homes destroyed, and 50,000 people displaced, many forced to hide in nearby forests where more died of hunger and snakebites. Charleston Church Shooter Gets Death Penalty Sentence U.S.A: The state prosecutor who will try the man who killed nine black people in June told the families of the victims that the shooter would face the death penalty. Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said this week that Dylann Roof, the shooter, deliberately massacred the nine people. According to ABC News, Roof shot each victim multiple times during the June 17 killings at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. “This was the ultimate crime, and justice from our state calls for the ultimate punishment,” Wilson said in a statement. Roof faces nine murder counts and state charges. Wilson said some of the victims’ families didn’t want the death penalty. Some families spoke at Roof ’s first court appearance, saying they forgave Roof. Said Wilson: “We all agree forgiveness can be an important part of the healing process. But know that forgiveness does not necessarily mean forg oing consequences,” Wilson said. Roof will also face federal charges of violating hate crime laws.

Federal prosecutors haven’t said if they will also seek the death penalty. Nagaland accord signed, promises peace after six decades of violence New Delhi: The central government and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-IM on Monday signed a historic accord that promises to bring peace in a state which has been ravaged by violence for over six decades. The accord was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who described it as historic. The agreement is expected to end the oldest insurgency in the country. “The Naga political issue had lingered for six decades, taking a huge toll on generations of our people,” said Modi. He admitted that “unfortunately, the Naga problem has taken so long to resolve because we did not understand each other”.

Four arrested for vandalizing Don Bosco statue Guwahati: Police have arrested four people in connection with vandalizing a statue of Don Bosco and dumping it the Bharalu river, near Guwahati last Friday. They were arrested on Friday. The statue was attacked on Thursday, on the eve of its planned public installation as part of the worldwide celebration of the 200th birth anniversary of the founder of the Society of Don Bosco. It had been placed on a pedestal on the shore of Bharulu, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, to be unveiled Friday morning. Christians rally for equal dalit rights New Delhi: About 100 protesters gathered in New Delhi to demand special rights for dalit Christians and Muslims, including quotas for places in educational institutions and government jobs, as enjoyed by their Hindu counterparts. Marking what they call “Black Day,” the demonstrators, including Catholic priests and nuns, waved black flags and shouted slogans in the capital Aug. 10. Black Day is observed by dalit Christians across India every Aug. 10 because of a 1950 presidential decree that day denying special rights to non-Hindus.

Encounter forget him not Becky nd taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. | Mark 6:41-44

What if you were there when this happened? Not as one of the crowd, but as one of Jesus’ disciples. What if you witnessed Jesus feeding more than 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish? Do you think it would change you? Do you think it would alter your perspective at all? Do you think it would influence your perception of God?

forgot about their disintegrating limbs (Luke 17:1119), and the disciples all forgot about how Jesus raised Jairus’s daughter back to life (Mark 5:35-43). Do I really think I would be any different? When God created us, He knew we would be a forgetful people. He knew we would keep forgetting despite all the miracles, healing, and answered prayers. Just stay here and think about this for a little bit. Think about how much WE get annoyed when the people in our lives forget the seemingly big things (but actually small when compared to all that Christ has done for us) we do.

Sometimes, I think that if I had walked on the dry ground with the Israelites after the parting of the Red Sea, if I had seen the pillar of fire and the cloud of smoke, if I had experienced instantaneous healing from leprosy, if I had witnessed someone being raised from the dead – then maybe, just maybe, my faith would be stronger.

Now think about how God sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, for the sole purpose of dying the cruelest death imaginable to this forgetful people – in place of this forgetful people. This blows my mind. When He created us, He knew we’d be forgetful. And we kept proving just how forgetful we were, as evidenced by the Israelites and the disciples themselves. But He loved us anyways. The Father sacrificed His Son anyways. Jesus was tortured by us, for us anyways. He hung on a tree anyways. Even though we would forget.

But the reality is, the Israelites still forgot about the Red Sea (Exodus 14), the nine other lepers

performed on earth, Jesus stops and takes a few actions that He later repeats towards the end of His ministry: And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” | Luke 22:19 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” | Matthew 26:26 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” | Mark 14:22 Does Mark 6:41-44 sound familiar now? Jesus broke the loaves of bread and gave them to the people. He divided the fish amongst the 5,000. The people ate and were satisfied. And there was plenty left over! This is the way God works. He fully meets needs. He exceeds our expectations. He more than compensates for any and all shortcomings, weaknesses, and failures. This is true when it comes to our poor memories too. He knows we are a forgetful people. Each generation is no better than the one before it. We all forget. And so to help us with our memory loss, Jesus instituted a way for us to remember that which is of utmost importance on a regular basis. How? Through the breaking of bread. Just as He broke the loaves of bread before the 5,000 and provided food for all, Christ’s body was given for us, broken for us – not just for a mere 5,000, but for millions, billions, for every single human. Just as the people were satisfied then, we too find complete satisfaction. The difference: they found their satisfaction in the food that January 2015 September 2015 was set before them and we find our satisfaction in 18

Christ, the Bread of Life, the Living Water, who went before us, took our cross, suffered our shame, and died in our place. We find our satisfaction in the power of His resurrection, in His victory over sin and death and hell, in the eternal Hope we have in Him! Just as there was plenty left over then, there is room for many more to enter into the family of God. There is room for more brothers and sisters in the faith. There is plenty of love left in Christ for those who have yet to know Him! There is plenty of mercy, grace, forgiveness left for those who have not yet heard His name! Beloved, know this, believe this: HE WILL NEVER RUN DRY! Just as Jesus fully met the needs of the 5,000 that day, He has fully, wholly met ours through the complete and finished work of the cross! “It is FINISHED,” He said! Praise God that it is finished! Praise God that it is complete! Just as Christ Jesus exceeded all expectations that day with the 5,000, just as He more than compensated for the shortcomings, weaknesses, and failures of those around Him, He continues to exceed our expectations, He continues to do “far more abundantly than all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). What a joy, what a privilege that we get to know Him, worship Him, remember Him! May we not only remember Him on Sunday mornings, on Wednesdays nights, during VBS and Bible study. But may we remember Him every second, every minute, giving glory to Him for who He is, for all that He has done, for His current working in our lives, and for all that He has in store.

Glory, glory, in the highest, be to our God and King! Father, if we remember nothing else in this life, may we always remember You. If we forget everything of this life, may we never forget You. m m

here have been times when I’ve been ashamed of my faith family. Squabbles, scandals, and division. Disputes over denominational differences. Competition rather than cooperation. “Black churches” and “white churches.” These have broken my heart and made me ashamed.

Today I’m Proud to be a Christian By Lori Hatcher

But this week, I’m proud. PROUD to call myself a Christian. I’m proud, so proud, of Debbie Dills, an ordinary believer whom God called to do an extraordinary thing. Early Thursday morning she watched FOX and Friends’ coverage of the church shooting. On her way to work, providentially running late, she spotted Dylann Roof ’s car. “I got a little nervous,” she told FOX news afterward, “I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a hero, and I’m not brave.” She pulled off onto an exit ramp, phoned her boss, and told him what she’d seen. He called police, who asked Debbie to get back on the highway, catch up with Roof, and confirm the license plate number. How many of us would chase after an armed man who had just killed nine people in cold blood? And get close enough to read his license plate and confirm his identity? But with courage that only comes from God, Debbie got back on Highway 74, chased Roof down, phoned in his license plate number, and tailed him until police arrived to arrest him. I’m not the hero,” she’s quick to admit. “God’s the hero. He just used me. . . . I hope he’s pleased with me. I want him to be pleased with me more than anything else.” I’m proud, so proud, of Marcus Stanley, a black rapper and survivor of black gun violence. He looked past the horror of Dylann Roof ’s crime into the darkness in his soul. He posted a message on Roof ’s Facebook page calling him to repentance and salvation.

“Give your heart to Jesus and confess your sins with a heart of forgiveness.” Marcus wrote. “He is the only one who can save your soul and forgive you for the terrible act you have done.” I’m proud, so proud, of the families and loved ones of those who died in Charleston. Wracked with grief, they followed the example of their Savior, who interceded for his killers by saying, “Forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.” Through tears, Ethel Lance’s daughter said to Roof, “I forgive you. You took something very precious from me, and I will never talk to her ever again. I will never be able to hold her again. But I forgive you. And have mercy on your soul.” I’m proud, so proud, that when some called for a race riot in Charleston, Pastor Goff, standing in the pulpit of Emanuel AME church, said, “A lot of folk expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just don’t know us. They just don’t know us because we are a people of faith, and we believe that when we put our forces and our heads together, working for a common good, there is nothing we cannot accomplish together in the name of September 2015 Jesus.” (continued on page 20...) 19

The Bit of Paper Sadhu Sundar Singh was distributing Gospels in the Central Province of India. He met some non- Christians on the train and offered a man a copy of John’s Gospel. The man took it, tore it into pieces in anger and threw the pieces out of the window. That seemed the end. But it so happened, in the providence of God, there was a man anxiously seeking for truth, walking along the line that very day, and he picked up, as he walked along, a little bit of paper and looked at it, and the words on it in his own language were “The Bread of life.’’ He did not know what it meant; but he inquired among his friends and one of them said, “I can tell you; it is out of the Christian book. You must not read it or you will be defiled.’’ The man thought for a moment and then said, “I want to read the book that contains that beautiful phrase!’’ and he bought a copy of the New Testament. He was shown where the sentence occurred-our Lord’s words “I am the Bread of Life’’; and as he studied the Gospel, the light flooded into his heart. He came to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and he became a preacher of the gospel. That little bit of paper through God’s Spirit was indeed the Bread of life to him, satisfying his deepest need.

continued from page 19

I’m proud, so proud, that Emanuel AME opened their doors in faith and commitment as they’ve done every Sunday since the church’s founding. And of the hundreds who sat in sweltering heat and crowded conditions inside the church for Sunday school and service. The church met for Sunday morning services to send a “message to the demons in Hell.” Perhaps this is what Jesus foresaw when he told Peter, “upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). And I’m proud, so proud of St. Andrews Evangelical, a mostly-white assembly in my hometown of Columbia, whose congregation walked down the street and surprised a mostlyblack church by joining them in worship. “It was crowded, hot, emotional, and awesome,” one church September 2015 member wrote. 20

Perhaps this is what Paul foresaw when he said, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). There have been times when I’ve been ashamed of my faith family. Ashamed to reveal that I’m a Christian “like them,” but not today. Today, I’m proud. “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16).

Martyrdom - Graham Stuart Staines! he death of Dr. Graham Staines, 58, director of the Leprosy Mission in Baripada, Orissa, India, and translator of the New Testament into the Ho tribe language, brought about profound effects in India. Staines had spent 35 years of his life to help the poor and illiterate in India.

T

Staines, a native of Australia, was attending the 14th annual jungle Bible camp in the village of Monoharpur. Just after midnight, January 23, 1999, Staines was sleeping in his jeep with his two sons, Phillip, 10, and Timothy, 6. The windows were broken out of the jeep, gasoline was poured on and ignited, and the jeep was enveloped in flames. The charred bodies were found embracing each other. A few days later, Graham’s wife, Gladys,

49, offered a clear and public statement forgiving the killers. Graham is also survived by his thir teen-year-old daughter Esther. As a result, Indian voters, revolted by this extremism, were considering a revolt in the then ruling political party. In addition, Graham Staines, a humble man, and his wife Gladys, have been exalted in India as examples of true Christian spirituality. United Christian Forum for Human Rights (UCFHR) has documented more than 120 attacks against Christian individuals, churches, and schools in the past year - half of them in the western state of Gujarat.

Bible Vending Machines A Vending machine which once dispensed candy and cigarettes here now drops copies of the four gospels when a Belgian ten franc coin (about twenty cents) is inserted. Just as it once provided customers with a choice of candies, the converted machine now provides a choice in languages. The books are available in French and Dutch. The director of the BELGIAN Bible Society placed the machine outside a Bible Society office near a major bus and trolley stop. He reports that about one hundred gospels a month are dispensed through the vending machine.

Holiness I make it my constant prayer that God would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind, which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion; without a humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation. Washington Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; bring an offering and come before Him; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Fear before Him, all the earth; the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved. Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice; and let men say among the nations, The Lord Reigneth. - I Chronicles 16:29, 30, 31 The narrow way, the way of holiness, not only leads to life, but it is life. Walking there, serene are our days, peaceful our nights, happy, high above the disorders and miseries of a wretched world, shall be our hourly communion with God; happy, full of assurance, be calm and sacred triumph, shall be our dying hour. - Fuller

Evangelical Distinctives continued from page 7

7.The literal return of Christ in the Second Advent. Bible-believing and theologically conservative Christians all over the world hold to these essentials as the basic tenets of biblical orthodoxy. The Central Truths (“The Solas”) of the Reformation The Brethren are deeply committed to the great doctrines of the Reformation: 1. Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) 2. Sola Fide (Faith alone) 3. Sola Gratia (Grace alone) 4. SolusChristus (Christ alone) 5. Soli Deo Gloria (To God alone be the glory). “So far as their doctrines are concerned, Open Brethren have no peculiarities. They hold the historic Christian faith, because they find it plainly taught in the Bible, which is to them, as to all children September 2015 of the Reformation, ‘the 22

only infallible rule of faith and practice.’ They are wholeheartedly evangelical in their understanding and presentation of Christianity, proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as the all-sufficient Savior of those who put their trust in him and as the only hope for mankind” (F.F. Bruce, “Who Are the Brethren?”, Appendix 1, In Retrospect, 316). What we believe does matter. Theology in its practical sense is the art of living unto God. It is the foundation of true spirituality. Any branch of Christianity that is divorced from its theological roots is just a “moral religion” rather than biblical faith that transforms hearts and lives. We must reaffirm, define and defend our faith to a new generation. They should know that our faith is not built upon the contemporary fads of cultural “churchianity” or on the legalistic traditions of a by gone era, but on the eternal truths of Biblical Christianity.

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor.15:3-4). m m

How to dARE TO DO MIGHTY THINGS FOR gOD AS A wOMAN od calls and equips Recognize the value of taking women to lead just as risks. It’s worthwhile to take risks much as he does so with in your quest to serve God as a m en. Yet women face more leader because the process of challenges than men as they try to taking risks helps you grow into a serve God and other people in stronger person. Whether you leadership roles. That’s because, succeed or fail, doing something too often, churches and other risky can: expand your vision of Christian organizations have failed what’s possible; build your Halee Gray Scott to cast a comprehensive vision of character; and help you develop the skills, what God can accomplish in and through the confidence, and attributes you need to navigate lives of women. life’s difficult situations well.

G

Many women sense God’s call to lead in a variety of different ways - from starting a Bible study or a food pantry, to serving a important roll in church activities or as an executive at a nonprofit organization - but lack the opportunities, encouragement, and support they need to do the work God is calling them to do. If you’re a woman who senses God calling you to dare to do something mighty for his kingdom, don’t be afraid to step out to do so. Despite the leadership challenges you might face, you can count on God himself to make it possible for you to accomplish whatever he calls you to do. Here’s how you can dare to do mighty things for God as a woman: Dare to believe that you can make a significant, positive difference in the world. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you that your life matters, you’re gifted and called by God, and you’re needed to join his redemptive work in the world. Since God promises to work through you when you trust and rely on him, choose to do so every day, and God will give you the faith and confidence you need to do your leadership work well.

Focus on working productively with others rather than arguing about women’s leadership roles. Don’t waste valuable time or energy on theological debates with other Christians about varying opinions of what specific roles women should or shouldn’t fill as leaders in God’s kingdom. Instead, respect the diversity among believers in the body of Christ while working in unity to fulfill God’s purposes together. No matter what theological perspective Christians have on women’s leadership roles, they all agree that: women can be leaders, God freely gives spiritual gifts to all believers regardless of their gender, all Christians – including women – have a responsibility to develop and use their spiritual gifts, and faith communities have a responsibility to ensure that women are free to put their spiritual gifts into action. Learn to see yourself as a leader. Too often, women don’t view themselves as leaders, due to a lack of encouragement, a tendency to shrink their ambitions

down to fit others’ expectations, and shame that makes them feel as if they don’t deserve to reach their full potential. But if you’re a Christian, you’re a leader as well, because God has given everyone in the body of Christ unique and important work to do in his kingdom. Keep in mind that leadership is simply a process whereby an individual influences a group of people to achieve a common goal. You can do that in small ways as well as great ways, and still achieve significantly valuable results from an eternal perspective. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see yourself as God sees you, so you can be confident that you’re a leader with tremendous potential whose life and work truly matters. Discern your calling. God has given you both a general calling and a specific one. Generally, you’re called to become like Jesus, and be a conduit through September 2015 which that likeness spreads to others. Specifically, 24

you’re called to use your spiritual gifts (Godgiven abilities to serve people in the church) and natural talents (God-given abilities to serve people in the world) to fulfill unique purposes. Pray for guidance about your calling. Identify what you do best and what you’re most interested in doing. Then ask the Holy Spirit to show you how that fits best with the ministry needs you notice around you, so you can figure out how to use your gifts and talents to help meet those needs.
