summer is here. There’s nothing quite like the first days of summer to brighten the mood, lift the soul… and strike fear straight into the heart when you notice the extra kilo or two that the winter months (and those chocolate biscuits and sneaky extra helpings) have added to your frame. If the thought of getting back into your swimsuit can make you break out in a nervous sweat, then the thought of fitting into that dream wedding gown would easily induce a full blown panic attack. So it’s time to take action, not just for the summer and not just for your wedding day. In this issue we share some great advice on how to combat those nasty extra kilos and build a better marriage at the same time. Looking forward to the rest of the season, this issue is action packed with a little bit of something for everyone! For those of you still struggling to make a decision, the pros and cons of various wedding receptions on Page 19 might help you narrow down the choices. If you’re animal lovers and you want your fur baby to be a part of your big day, then head to Page 26 for some humorous advice on how to make the day run smoothly for you and your pet. Why is it we focus so much on that short term goal when the whole point of being married is spending the rest of your life with the one you love? Really, shouldn’t we be focusing on our health instead? Because it is health that will ensure the long and happy life we desire. Shouldn’t we put a greater effort and investment of time into our bodies rather than into the details that make up just one day in our lives? If we change just one word, we change everything. Instead of getting wedding-day-ready, we need to get to get our bodies’ marriage-ready. And when I say we, I mean both of you. Looking after both your mental and physical health is key to a happier you, so view this as a commitment and investment into your future as a couple. Getting fit and healthy together will strengthen your relationship, allow you to support and encourage each other, lean on each other, and burn away everyday stress along with the calories. I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying, “a couple that sweats together, stays together.” So… what are you waiting for? Now because we cannot ignore that all eyes are indeed on you when you walk down the aisle (or wait at the end!) and you do want to look your absolute best, there is no harm in setting yourself a goal to strive towards. Just make it a realistic one. Make another goal, for a month or two AFTER the wedding. So many make the mistake of reaching a goal and falling back into old habits the very next day. Don’t waste all that hard work, keep moving forward. TODAY IS THE DAY - You must think in terms of months not weeks. If losing weight is one of your goals, it is not going to happen overnight. It takes time for your body to change, and to
FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD – Stress can play such a big role in how and what we eat. For some it is difficult to eat when feeling stressed, while others head for the chocolate biscuits at the first sign of stress. Eat regularly and include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat and fish and low fat dairy in your diet. WALK, BIKE, SWIM, SKIP - If you’re not used to exercising, start gently and work your way up to more intensive exercise. Seek the advice of a trained professional, such as your doctor, a personal trainer, or join a gym if you’re unsure where to begin. Develop a routine. Commit to it. Don’t book appointments that cut into your exercise time, book your appointments around it. Make exercise a vital part of your daily life. WATER – Besides keeping you hydrated, water helps eliminate toxins from your body and keeps your hair, nails and skin glowing. The easiest way to ensure this is keep a bottle of water with you and sip it throughout the day. SLEEP – How many times have you heard the saying sleep is overrated? In fact the complete opposite is true. A good night’s sleep helps boost your immune system, reduce stress, and allows you to be more energetic and productive and able to tackle any challenges that may come your way throughout the day. REWARD – Set yourself mini goals and as you reach them, reward yourself with healthy treats; such as a massage or pedicure. Buy a new outfit, a book or a new pair of shoes. Men, get yourself that fishing rod you’ve been looking at for months, or perhaps a new golf club. PLAY - Ensure time for yourself, both together and separately. Don’t let wedding plans totally consume your every waking moment. Grab your girls and head to the movies. Boys, have that day out on the boat fishing. Your list of things to do will be waiting for you when you get home, but it will be easier to face when you feel relaxed and stress-free. 11

If you as the client feel relaxed with your photographer, it definitely shows in the photos. A good relationship also makes way for the photographer and client to have a shared understanding of the creative vision and direction. Why a second photographer? More memories and a party friend for me (just kidding)! Is an engagement shoot of benefit when it comes to the wedding day photos? Are couples more relaxed? Definitely. It can be a taste of what’s to come, but also a great opportunity to capture you as a couple in a beautiful time of your lives. What’s the best advice you’d give to any couple getting married? Don’t get too lost in the details that you forget this is a day about celebrating you as a couple. Relax and have fun!
cherish you portraits cheryl eagers “Shoot and burn” Yes or no? No. Don’t be disappointed as you get what you pay for. Shoot and burn, complete with professional editing followed up by sharing a beautiful presentation with your clients when they first view their images. Yes. It’s ok to deliver digital files to your clients, however they still must experience the beauty of their day being continued. To just hand over unedited files shows them that you are not really part of their story. A professional photographer will always embrace the mood of the day and bring back all those wonderful and touching moments to the client when they first see their images. I don’t even believe that we should share ‘teasers’ on social media, we get a much better response and many more happy tears when our clients see their images for the first time during a beautiful slideshow, a wonderful experience to share together as newlyweds – give them an unforgettable moment they will talk about throughout their lives together. What’s the best advice you’d give to any couple getting married? Let the photographer know what they want, then take the photographers advice on certain aspects that will work in better for them with their wedding day vision.

HOUSE OF LUCIE c r e at i v e K HARA DEURHOF What’s the most important thing a couple should think about when choosing a wedding photographer? Professionalism, creative and friendly! I think all couples should do their research before picking a wedding photographer. A wedding is one of the biggest days in their lives, and documenting that to a high standard is so important. You need to pick a photographer that is going to give you timeless images, and in a style that you love. A couple needs to be able to feel relaxed in front of the camera and confident in knowing that their photographer is going to capture their wedding day beautifully. How long should a client expect to wait after their wedding before receiving their images? A couple should expect to wait between 4 – 6 weeks to receive their wedding photographs. However sneak peeks on social media beforehand are always fun. What’s the best advice you’d give to any couple getting married? Do your research, find a professional photographer who suits your style – and don’t forget to have fun!! Spontaneous shots are usually always the best! Trust that your photographer is going to their job.

Sometimes it’s good to have those ‘random’ shots you may not have been able to get, and I have been using a 2nd shooter for a few years now, mainly for the ceremony, but also to help with lighting/gear. It’s something that I just would not do by myself since trying to lug gear around and keeping an eye on it then shooting can be a challenge.
How many hours are actually involved in one wedding, from shooting to editing to handing over the final product? Typically around 30 hours I invest in handling a normal wedding, shooting and editing. Far too many photographers I’ve seen say they can edit in a couple of hours, that’s not editing, that’s rushing a job, it takes time to get the most out of images. My background started with digital editing around 18 years ago with Photoshop and many people have only come into digital without a solid grounding in editing only around the past 7-8 years tops, since most cameras just did not have the quality of film back then. My experience was in an environment where I had to do editing for printwork, and that’s especially a solid grounding. What’s the best advice you’d give to any couple getting married? Allow time, don’t think any good photographer can just rock up and nail it immediately, they need to be sure of getting the shots, but also cannot feel rushed. Also, see any potential photographer’s work in person and in print form, not just by viewing a website, although that can be a good gauge you need to see how it looks in print form. 13

What’s the most important thing a couple should think about when choosing a wedding photographer? Experience, Experience, Experience. It is extremely important to make sure that your photographer has experience and is in fact a professional wedding photographer, after your day has been and gone your photos are what will turn into a family heirloom and remind you of how you felt at particular moments throughout your wedding day so you want to make sure you are in the hands of a professional. Ask to view their previous work and if available previous images of past weddings shot at your chosen location. Each photographer has a different style so it’s important to ensure that you all are comfortable with each other and that it is clear as to what style of photographs you are wanting.
What’s the best advice you’d give to any couple getting married? Don’t be afraid to ask questions, no matter how big or small. Ask the question if you are unsure or want to know more. It’s your day so you should be comfortable with every element of it, and the more you know about how your day will go, the more at ease you will be when your wedding day arrives.

What’s the most important thing a couple should think about when choosing a wedding photographer? The finished imagery of the photographer in the style they require, photographers definitely have unique styles. Additionally a good photographer can cover multiple styles from modern contemporary imagery to traditional styles. How many hours are actually involved in one wedding, from shooting to editing to handing over the final product? A tricky question as some weddings require extra time on the big day such as full reception or additional post production work such as albums. A good rule of thumb I find is that every hour spent photographing there is 4-5hrs editing time on a computer. So a typical 6-8hr shoot will take 25-30hrs to finish and if albums are to be designed add another 10-15hrs on average. Is an engagement shoot of benefit when it comes to the wedding day photos? Are couples more relaxed? Of course, having broken the ice previously with your wedding couple to be you have a good feel for the couples personalities and they yours. More importantly by having an engagement shoot a photographer can learn what they are looking for in their photography.

For some, the type of reception they envision for their wedding day is a foregone conclusion. There are no decisions to be made, everything is settled, right down to the Christofle cutlery and the Irish linen napkins. For others, this decision is not so clear cut. Casual? Formal? Sit down? Cocktail? BBQ?

Next, when envisioning your reception, do you think sunset and twinkling lights or are you both morning people and sunrise is your special time of day? Once this is decided (or agreed upon!) you can then move on. • Breakfast or Brunch – If you are true morning people, and a sunrise or early morning wedding appeals, then a breakfast or brunch reception is perfect for you. The menu could include delicious options such as waffles, frittata, omelets and eggs

Pros: Your menu could include many of the dishes it would at a later reception but possibly at a lower price. Cons: If you’re not leaving immediately for your honeymoon, you may be left feeling a little ‘what now?’ if you’ve nothing else planned. There may be a more casual, less party-like feel about this time of day than there would be later in the evening.

The part that we loved most about the day was the ceremony. It was personalised and allowed guests who didn’t know both of us well to get to know us a bit more. There were plenty of laughs and it got everyone relaxed for the evening ahead.

doggy do’s and dont’s Is your pooch about to play a part in your big day?
For many people, a pet is often their first “child”, so it is entirely understandable that they would want to include them in their wedding day. While this can be a seriously cute addition to the ceremony, there are some things that can go wrong. Now if you have a dog/dogs/pets that are perfectly well behaved, trained to obey commands and socialised with a large number of people, then you should have no problem. Tie that polka dot bow tie on pup and let him work his charm on the delighted guests. If your pet is not accustomed to this kind of situation then I can foresee a number of potential issues. • Nervous poos – sitting like land mines on the grass, just waiting to explode on the first pair of Manolo Blahnik’s to head in their direction. • Nervous wees on the Bride’s wedding gown – hmmm, that’ll look great in photos and smell divine at the reception…

• Chewing the ring cushion and accidentally swallowing the wedding rings. • Devouring the wedding cake and vomiting up in Nana’s handbag. • Snuggling up to the one and only guest with a pet allergy. • Discovering a new found dislike for the Brother-in-law and biting him on the hand… or somewhere much worse. • Dragging the flower girl face first down the aisle by the lead. • Planting loving yet slobbery kisses on Mother-in-law’s cheek. • Drinking from the toilet and THEN kissing the Mother-in-law. • Getting amorous with Great Aunt Matilda’s leg… Sound farfetched? Trust me, if you Google these, I am almost certain you will find every single one of these moments occurring during a

wedding. Oh, and it’s not just dogs that people have at weddings… some have their horse. Yeah. Read that list again now… So what to do, if your pet is more Scooby Doo than Lassie? Read on. • First and foremost, ensure that your venue will allow pets. • Practice with an engagement shoot first. Will your pet obey long enough to get the shot? • Consider carefully the role your pet will play. Limit the opportunities for disaster at this point. • Organise a pet sitter, preferably someone outside of the wedding party. • Organise food, water and shelter, remember our animals feel the heat as much as we do. Find a quiet and secure place for before and after the ceremony.

• Don’t forget the leash! • Warn any guests with allergies prior to the day. They may want some antihistamines on hand and to choose a seat a safe distance away! • Do some pre-wedding training – Eg: no kissing Mother-in-law, no drinking from the toilet and sit, sit, sit!! • Toilet breaks. When the Groom goes, the dog goes! • Doggy poop bags… yep. • Supply your pet sitter with relevant medical information as well as vet contacts. Lastly, remember that much like children, involving your pet in your wedding day means you need to expect the unexpected. Whatever happens, happens. It may be super cute, or it may be a little bit stinky!

New Year’s Eve and wedding aren’t words usually associated with each other but it seems to us there are a number of very good reasons why the last night of the year makes the perfect choice for tying the knot. New Year’s Eve is all about the glitz and glam and everyone loves the hype, the sparkle and excitement of the night. From fancy frocks to fireworks and everything in between, New Year’s could be the ideal occasion for saying “I do” and here’s why… Bubbles – It’s not really New Year’s without a glass or two of champagne is it? Champagne spells sophistication and glamour, so if this a prerequisite for your wedding day, pencil it in on the calendar right now. Resolution Tree – Instead of having a wishing tree, make it a resolution tree and have your family and friends write down their resolutions for the New Year and hang them on a tree with a ribbon. Caffeine – A round or two of delicious espresso martinis, Irish coffees or other caffeine flavoured beverages will keep your guests sparkling and ready for the countdown. For the more daring, espresso martini shots might be just the ticket! Method: 1. Cut felt (2 layers at a time) in the shape of a heart. 2. Cut the ribbon and stamp or write your wedding date. 3. Place the magnet in the centre and the ribbon on one side of the heart, slightly angled up. 4. Stitch the two layers together using embroidery thread, making sure you stitch through the ribbon to hold it into place.

My fiancé is religious and would like to get married in his church, however I’m really not keen on the idea. I always imagined I would have an outdoor ceremony. How can we come to a resolution on this? Thank you for your help, Liana. Hi Liana, marriage itself requires compromise and teamwork and this is one of your first practices at it! If you both feel strongly about this matter, then the initial thing to agree upon is that you both need to make some sort of compromise. Some religions will allow marriage ceremony to be performed by the minister or priest outside the church and this would be my suggestion for you both to consider. We really have the smallest of budgets, but we just want to get married! I truly can’t afford an expensive dress but I still want to feel like a bride! What can I do? TIA, Tina. First of all, good for you for admitting you can’t go beyond your means and over extend yourselves financially. This a trap too often fallen into by couples planning their day and it is very easy to get swept up in all of that and tell yourself you will “worry about it after the wedding.” Now there are some great options when it comes to cheaper alternatives. Many bridal shops carry a range of bridesmaid dresses that can be ordered in white, offwhite or cream and will be equally as stunning as a bridal gown. You can add detail in the form of jewellery or beading. Another option is shops such as Forever New have some exquisite gowns, both long and short, that would serve equally as well as a wedding gown. Imagination is really your only limit when it comes to your budget. Good luck, I am sure you will be beautiful whatever you choose. Isaac x
isaac Hi team, I need your help. I am painfully shy and I absolutely hate being the centre of attention. Oh dear Liz, I feel for you! We all feel uncomfortable in certain situations in our life, but your wedding is one that you should be relaxed and happy enough to enjoy. Could you suggest to your fiancé, that you have a private ceremony and photos, followed by a casual party, rather than a formal reception? This way, there will be less moments when the attention is solely on you. Also the right photographer will also be able to capture candid shots of the party without you being aware they are even there! And in my opinion, they are often the best photos. All the best, Liz. Hi Isaac, I am unsure whether I should have a veil or not. My wedding dress is one shoulder, with beading detail on the strap. The back of the dress is quite low and also has some detail on it. I always thought I would wear a veil, but now I am worried it will hide all the detail. Any ideas?! Thanks, Kara.
Hi Kara, firstly I would suggest, trying on various veil options with your dress if you haven’t already done so. You may be able to go for a shorter option that won’t hide all the detailing on your dress. Another option would be to opt for a birdcage veil, which will give you that lovely romantic effect without taking away from your gown. If you choose to go for a longer veil, you could remove it before your reception, or even during your photos so the detail on your dress is seen in your photos. Good luck Kara, Isaac x
