We are Isabel García-Velasco and Beatriz Castañares, secondary teachers of Geography & History and Biology & Geology, and we present to you this magazine, which is a summary of an interesting interdisciplinary project about “Madrid de los Austrias” developed by students of 3º ESO of IES Sapere Aude.

Who and what

ARCHITECTURE The architect of the Mercado de San Miguel was Alfonso DubĂŠ y DĂ­ez. The main architectural elements of this building are the iron pillars that support the structure and the main decorative elements are the crenellations. It has 2 floors and a total surface of 1200 square meters. The market is built over an horizontal platform, that is elevated 10 centimeters from the lowest point and 1.65 meters from the highest point. In this building, there are 9 paths, That are 4 to 4.5 meters wide. The stands are usually forming a square of 2.2 meters on each side.

Structure and tools used: The columns of the door are made of granite.

The granite is cut with wire saws. The blocks of granite are cut into plates and then these are cut individually using frame saws with blades.

However... -If the surface is vertical, initially the rock will be cut vertically and then at its base. A piece of rock is separated. The piece is removed and cut into horizontal pieces, and then cut into smaller slabs. So, in this way, the smaller dimensions allow for easier handling and transport.

Limestone reacts to effervescence in the presence of acids such as Hydrochloric acid . It can be diluted by the effects of water over the course of time. This causes the rock to dissolve in the water making the rock smaller.
