Somewhere along the line, thanks to the ingenious

For some of these mothers, a very LARGE village! Although, I can vouch that each one is excellent at being a mother, and in their work. I would love to develop a THINK TANK , to help bridge the gap of perception and reality.

Having lost my mother, a teacher, my dancing partner, and my role model, tragically, before I became a mother, I realized I was on my own. Now, even though I can’t carry a tune and everyone runs when I start to sing, I still remember a time

If I evaluated my income level during those “kid years,” I would gladly do a rewind and bank every cent, however my children are past wearing superman capes (unless they’re not telling me something), and though I was a single mom, I still gave them that “magic” that only moms can provide. I believe my daughter has the cape now, and wears it when she teaches preschool, and my son may never eat mac and cheese again. BUT, they have the "magical moments" I created, even on a single income.

with her twin adopted daughters Amelia, and Anna. She and Sal traveled to China, and at the last moment found they didn’t have one, but TWO. Bonus! When she saw them, she knew she would be the MOM they needed, and from all my observations, she has EXCEEDED at that job and soared right past the “ok” level and onto the “exceptional” floor.

In knowing these women, as well as talking and studying many more, one of the words that came to my mind most frequently was UNSTOPPABLE. The other was FEAR. Those are two words you don’t often hear when describing a mother. Yet those two words in combination is what makes them successful in their business, and as mothers. They have overcome any fear of failure and forged ahead accepting nothing less than success. They do the same as mothers. The mothers we chose for this issue are representative of many other mothers in that they have overcome the fear of never becoming a mother, and either adopted, or gone through extensive medical procedures, or selflessly set aside their well being in favor of putting that “extra ingredient” into giving their child those “special moments” they might not otherwise have. More and more, moms are forming together to help in many aspects and its

Rashmi, is 8 months pregnant with twins. A boy and a girl. And that takes care of that! I was lucky to have met her recently at a luncheon and she was warm and open with me (which is a rare quality now days), and instantly saw that she conducts her profession with compassion and integrity which tells me those children are going to be blessed. Of course, I’m doing a full court press for her to name her daughter “Isabel”, so we’ll see.

Our other mothers, Laura, Denise, Oreeda, Marci, and Traci are also women that have tackled the business world and succeeded.

Their daughters, Maddie, McKenzie, Morgan, Madison, Kristine and Bailee (what’s up with all the M’s), are younger replica’s of their mothers. They might not admit it, but one day, they will be extremely proud to say “I’m just like my mom”. A few of them have told their memories for us, and you’ll see how fearless they are to walk ahead of the crowd and lead, they are daughters of LEADERS.

as business owners, as mothers, as daughters, as friends, and as women we can be proud to acknowledge and respect.

Some words from the future mothers of ahwatukee Madison Edmonds When I was little, I always thought that when I went to school, my mom just waited for me to come home; and as you probably guessed, I was wrong. My mom works extremely hard each day to provide an amazing lifestyle for us. She runs her job, along with running our household. I know that’s what mothers are supposed to do, but my mother does it with love, and might I add; style! I truly appreciate how hard she works, and everything she does to help me succeed in life. Without her, I don’t know where I would be today! She pushes and encourages me to always be the best I can be, and give 150% at everything. I am so blessed to have such an amazing mother that loves and cares for me as much as she does.

Summer 2005 was my best summer yet and I spent in Mexico with my mother! We spent our days laying out and getting tan, then our nights going into town for some family dinner and fun. I watched my mom work extremely hard to make our home look outstandingly beautiful, yet she made it look fun and still managed her time in order to make sure I had the most unforgettable vacation. It made me decide that when I grow up I want to have a job I can enjoy just like her. When it comes down to it, she’s my role model and my best friend.

About three years ago, I was in a horrific car accident out of state. As soon as she found out, she jumped on a flight and was there in an instant. I would like to thank her for always being there for me, giving me a shoulder to cry on, and always giving the best advice. My mom is one of the hardest working people I have ever met…and I have met a lot of people! I would be happy to be even half the woman she is.

Morgan thomas I still remember the day my beautiful sister, now 17, took her first breath. My brother and I had been playing in the waiting room at St. Francis hospital when my dad came out to lead us back to where Kristine had just been born. He then sat us down next to our mom. "Morgan, Paul," he said, "your little sister is different."

Any sibling or parent of a child with Downs Syndrome will agree, different - yes, a challenge - yes...and a complete and utter blessing, like a little angel whose smile can melt away any sadness.

Kristine has grown up to be a girl who's shy, but who still pushes herself to learn, progress and perform. She has an impressive list of things she's already accomplished like medals won at the Special Olympics, recitals, performances, and getting through high school!

Without the help, support, dedication, struggle and constant encouragement of our mother, none of this would have been possible. This single working mother has spent so much of her time fighting for what she feels Kristine deserves and needs with endless hours of meetings, school, paperwork, doctor visits, phone calls, emails, you name it!

Mothers of children with special needs, I applaud you and I love you mom!

Ed Note: Morgan is an AMAZING young woman that, at a young age began sharing the responsibilities of raising a special needs child, and has gone through extensive training to become certified in that field in order to help other special needs children. As a young woman, she has learned early on the weight of responsibility, and has never once complained or dodged that responsibility. It's an example that our younger generation is STILL exceptional.

Madeline slama When I try to recall an all around memorable memory of my mother and I, many come to mind, but only one really stands out. It happened seven years ago in the heart of New Jersey.

We (my sister, Sam, my mom and I) were driving out to Camp Timbertops, a recreational getaway for preadolescent girls. I had always been jealous of Sam and how she got to go there and be completely free of parental rule for three weeks.

As we dropped Sam off, I noticed ominous clouds had already formed above us. Getting back in the car with my mom, raindrops the size of watermelond bugs pelted the landscape at an unbelievable force. As we cautiously drove through the thick, forest-ridd landsacpe, we were thankful for the two-ton semi in front of us with its continuous red brak lights penetrating through the damp, drenched downpour.

My mom drove two feet behind the semi for a good couple miles, all the while silently thanking the driver for installing such large lights. All the while through the drive, we cracked jokes, butted heads and gabbed like we have never gabbed before.

When we finally broke through the rain sodden road, we mentally thanked the semi driver again and began our way through the appropriately named town of "Waterfront," all the while loving the sound of the fat raindrops breaking into a soggy-sounding cacophony.

My grandmother was a perfectionist, but didn’t expect if from those around her. Her days were filled with relentless pain from arthritis, but she NEVER complained. When the doctor suggested a handicap sign for her car, she declined, saying there were others much more in need. She was selfless.

It’s hard to believe this vibrant, resilient woman is gone. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t want to pick up the phone and share something with her. I miss her, but I know she’s still

We finally arrived at the hospital and spent the day bonding with our new little miracle baby with the wise eyes — the baby I’d dreamed of for so long and who was finally, gracefully, here.

We floated back to our hotel that night and were greeted by my parents. Their pick-up truck was heaped wall-to-wall with baby gear. It was like Christmas morning, but in May and much better!

The four of us spent that night opening boxes, reading directions, and assembling things. Okay….my husband and dad did that. My mom and I mostly bawled over tiny pink outfits.

Thank You Little did I know that when the idea of a “mothers in business issue” poped into our heads as we were browsing through vanity fair, that it would be a herculean effort to make sure we “pulled it off”. So, in line with the sentiment….HELP…..

Here’s who came running:

David's Bridal, the ever popular location on Ray road, and their managers along with Vicki, and Tanya (who had never met me and have since decided to run every time I come in the store), were amazingly polite when each one of our mothers came in with daughters to try on their dresses for the photo shoot. Davids Bridal is not just bridal, its for all events and when this one popped up, they jumped in with both feet and worked on our time schedule. Who does that anymore?!

Along with the dresses, there was hair, and makeup. So, Who gonna call? Sean and Debbie, owners of Madison Avenue Spa! With only a few days notice they pulled together their special MAC team (Madison Avenue Creative), to handle 13 mothers and daughters.

Following the direction of Elaine, they worked fast and efficiently with a creative flair to produce a “1940’s look”, and were right on target. The MAC team is a collection of stylists that offer their services to participate for charity, photo shoots, weddings and other events. The dedication is strong and even their leader, Elaine hopped off the plane and raced to the photo shoot in an effort to make sure that Nicki, April, Jessie, Shahin, Megan and Taylor were not being mistreated by me!

And of course, when you have beautiful gowns and hair, you HAVE TO HAVE THE JEWELRY. Again, with just a few days warning, I sauntered into Michael’s Jewelers and as the owner, Chris was ducking out the back door, Emily (with 26 years of service) instructed me that the ONLY jewelry for this type of shoot was PEARLS. Simple, classy, and for both mothers and daughters. As usual, she was right! You’ll find she usually is.

She was smart,and sent Chris with the pearls to the photo shoot, and something I’ve never seen happen, happened, I saw the owner of one of Ahwatukee’s oldest and most respected businesses, choosing the appropriate necklace to go with each dress. He matched color and style with each mother and daughter, and it was perfect. Of course, Kevin handled the "security" part, which included deciding which earrings worked! So, ladies, if you want to have a man’s opinion, just ask Chris, and he WILL KNOW

what looks beautiful, or he’ll make it! Of course, next time, he might send Emily. But next time I’m doing something with diamonds!

We’d also like to thank Foothills Golf Club for not only providing a location for a shoot of this magnitude, but for including food and drinks so that each person was comfortable in the length of time we spent shooting. Lori (the events manager) was exceptional in providing all that we needed, whether it was tables, chairs, stands, or meatballs. We were made to feel as though it wasn’t a burden to have two "shoots" going on in their way. So when you’re thinking of events, I guarantee you, Foothills is a location that should be factored into your decision. They are more than golf!

Of course, we can’t EVER leave out our AMAZING Photographer, Art Holeman. He continues to astound us each time he gets behind a camera. Where did we find this guy! I am NEVER LETTING GO! Not only did he arrange the “look”, but he handled all the mothers, daughters, elements, and ME. Of course, he has his standard comment when I’m involved “anyone that is talking, get behind me”….translated that means, “Isabel, I’m in charge now”.

Ahahah. Of course, he and Kevin team up against me, and then add in our Art Director, Niki Blaker, and I still WIN! Speaking of which, our Art Director is also our Creative Director, and if you don’t know the difference, she will explain it. Although, she takes time to come down and “oversee” (which really means she stands next to Art and waits for me to get behind both of them), but makes sure that the “look” we are trying to achieve is going to work well in the magazine. Now this is a good thing, since I gave no thought to that whatsoever.

Along with Niki, we had our Fashion Stylist, Alex Evjen of AVE Styles when I first asked her “what do I do”? she answered “pray”. Of course, she didn’t abandon me, and in effect made sure that the dresses were the right color, and each one worked with each woman, and that the “whole look” worked. She made sure each woman was fitted properly, and with the right elements for the shoot. She picked up the dresses, and made sure all the loose ends were tied.

And of course, last but not least, my husband Kevin, who in his infinite wisdom would assist at the most critical of moments, and was always the strength and calm needed to pull this off.

And everywhere I go, especially in the wake of the great recession, I meet mothers carving out new ways to combine earning money with raising children… pursuing contract, job-sharing or part-time work, or starting homebased businesses. It’s a great time to be a mother.

So I’d like to thank those moms who made their own sacrifices and paved the way to today’s new landscape in mothering, replete with choices and options they only dreamed about. We owe them our gratitude. After all, we’re standing on their shoulder pads.

Mom's Soft Oatmeal Cookies Ingredients 1 cup raisins 1 cup water 3/4 cup shortening 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 2 cups oats Optional 1 banana 1/2 cup nuts 1/2 cup coconut 2 tablespoons wheat germ 5-6 dates Simmer raisins and water over low heat until plump (20-30 minutes). Add 5-6 chopped dates last 5 minutes, if desired. Drain liquid into cup and add water to measure 1/2 cup. Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla. Shir in hot raisin liquid. Blend in dry ingredients and stir in oats, raisins and optional ingredients. Bake at 400 degrees on ungreased cookie sheet for 8-10 minutes. Makes 6-7 dozen cookies.

Consequences Of DUI Charges And DUI Penalties

According to Arizona crime statistics, there were 39,821 DUI arrests in the State during 2009.

Although Arizona may not rank at the very top of the nation for DUI arrests, those with Extreme and Aggravated DUI charges face strict Arizona DUI penalties. Statistics may seem like only abstract numbers now, but that all changes in a flash when you find yourself as one of those numbers.

Arizona Revised Statutes Title 28-1381 mandates charging an individual with a DUI if a person:

=.08 Has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or more while driving

=.15 Has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or more while driving

For anyone who has ever struggled to show mom how to upload photos or has spent an hour walking HER through changing hER screensaver, relief is within reach.

While I dearly love helping my mother and seeing her light up when she finally understands what I am teaching her on the computer, I would also like to leave her knowing that she will be able to navigate, rewind, record and dial all year long without complications.

From that thought, Google recently launched the site TeachParentsTech.org. The site features instructional videos on everything from the most simple of tasks such as changing text size to the more complicated undertaking of transferring files between devices.

TeachParentsTech.org lets you select from more than 50 basic how-to videos to send to mom, dad, your old college roommate, your neighbor, or anyone else who could use a little help with tech tasks – whether it's how to copy and paste or how to share a big file.

Potential teachers can select various videos on a formatted note, send them to a recipient of choice, and post about it on Facebook, Twitter, or Google Buzz.

I consider myself proficient when it comes to technology, but even I found some great tips on this site.

In today's fast paced technological advancements, it is hard for even the sharpest of us to keep up. I am so thankful that Google put together a site that I can refer to and refer others to when they need it.

But watch out! If your mom becomes so tech savvy, she may end up teaching YOU a thing or two!

to ahwatukee Thanks to Mimi Cox from Keller Williams Realty Sonoran Living, we recently learned that KW Care, along with others in the community have supported and have collected food and items for the Kyrene Family Resource Center.

There are more than 400 homeless people living in Ahwatukee and many families that are in need of help for themselves and their children.

The Kyrene Family Resource Center provides an opportunity for students and families to access needed assistance and resources, in order to meet their basic and extended needs.

Services that benefit Kyrene’s students and families include: • Food Pantry • Children Clothing Bank • Shelter Resources • School Supplies • Shot Clinics • Adult Education Opportunities • Holiday Giving programs • Homeless and Refugee Assistance • Resource Referral • Dental programs Families are referred to the KFRC by teachers, school office staff, principals, friends, and neighbors. Families are also welcome on a walk-in basis. KFRC staff collaborate with other Kyrene and community program staff to meet the basic needs of students/families in order to ensure children are able to attend school.

By raising awareness and providing connections to educational opportunities in the community, the Kyrene Family Resource Center staff encourages and supports families, and emphasizes the importance of parental involvement in children’s education.
