Striped pyjamas are perfect for resurrecting the age-old cinematic technique of Ombro-cinema! After the first few pages of the story, the child falls asleep and suddenly everything in the book goes crazy. On the motorways, the signs say that the city is on its way. Our hero is set to fly over it in his striped pyjamas. The city is spectacular, teaming with crowds and life, traffic and lights. Hang on, this is NEW YORK! GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS A tale for learning how to count. by Olivier Douzou
We start from zero, and zero is represented by a golden lock of hair belonging to a girl called Goldilocks. As usual the porridge is too hot, so the three bears set out on a stroll to let it cool down. When they get home, the house is upside down as usual, and as usual Goldilocks has fallen asleep then wakes up and skedaddles. One minute she’s there the next minute there’s nothing. We’re back to zero. The tale might have been told a thousand times and maybe we know it like the back of our hand, but it’s never been told this way, with pictures and numbers, numbers we imagine and numbers that think they’re words. You might almost call it a digital book. 3 years • 20 x 28 cm • 40 pages • 14 € approx.

uik is a cute little pig who lives his peaceful little piggy life on the little farm. But one dark and stormy night, the pig is struck by lightning and – incredible! – uik lights up. What a godsend for the farmer, his wife and children to have a multi-function electric pig at home. From now on, uik looks after the cows and provides light, and much more besides. But one day, uik grows fed up of working day and night without so much as a thank you, and runs away. He runs for a long time until he reaches the sea where he meets someone who changes his life. Which just goes to show how electricity can change anyone’s life! 17 x 17 cm • 40 pages • 12 €

Each year, the boy spends his summer holidays with his grandfather, Luis, an extraordinary grandfather who teaches him the names of the wild plants and birds. The grandfather is in fact from Spain and doesn’t know how to read or write, but he manages to come out with some delectable new phrases, like “dog the isles and crust the tea”. A delightful picture book in homage to the work of Le Douanier Rousseau. 21 x 29 cm • 32 pages • 15 €
If we didn’t have a mouth, things would be so much easier, especially when you’re not brimming in self-confidence and you tend to stammer. However, there are lots of other ways to make yourself understood – doff your cap to say hello, nod your head to say “yes” – and they help stop you feeling stupid in front of Alba, the beautiful neighbour. Alba is a real chatterbox. She is always full of ideas, and words. But how am I going to feel comfortable around her, and pluck up the courage to speak? 23 x 32 cm • 40 pages • 16 €

THE LAUGHTER OF THE WHALES
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
by Rachel Corenblit
Antoine’s mother is depressed so sends him to live with his father, until she gets well again. But how will Antoine ever manage to live under the same roof as his father’s new wife, and especially her daughter, Abigaël, who is exactly the same age as him? To cap everything, Abigaël - who everybody says is his half-sister, even if she’s black, because her own father is African – has one favourite subject of conversation: the end of the world! The end of the world is not really the thing you want to talk about when you hear the weather forecast announces extreme weather conditions to come. Soon the clouds come rolling in and the thunder and lightning start, the wind whips up and torrential rain and hailstorms come lashing down. Alone in the house, the two kids, without electricity or telephone, have to face the problems to come. The river bursts its banks, the water level rises quickly whisking away everything in its way. They discover however they are not entirely alone and they join forces with two neighbours, the 35 year-old Bertrand, the neighbours son, a loner who manages to save a lonely old woman, Madame Yollande. Together they confront the dramatic rise in the water level and through adversity they express their joys and fears and become closer. 9/12 years • 12 x 17 cm • 120 pages • 8.50 €

EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE THE SEA
by Agnès de Lestrade and Nathalie Choux
What makes Marika dream is horses. When she is asleep she imagines herself galloping through the wind, far from the May Lily estate where she lives. So when her best friend Sofia announces that a charity is set to take her to the sea, she is cynical: “Just because we’re poor, it doesn’t mean we have to see the sea!” she says. But once she gets there, she has a whale of a time, yelling and laughing. In her new bathing suit, she has fashion parades and sand fights, she goes swimming and running. And… she can’t take her eyes off Christian who swims like a dolphin. Christian, who always keeps himself to himself, becomes the star for the day. And then… as she is exploring a sand dune, she comes across an Arab thoroughbred. using nothing but our simple pleasures, Agnès de Lestrade creates a sweet and gentle story where carefree frivolity and happiness are the main heroes.

Héloïse’s father has just gone into hospital and the family has gathered for the occasion – grandparents, cousins and Aunt Sophie, etc. Héloïse barely recognises her father – he looks pale and tired; and there are bags of sadness beneath his eyes. She is pushed into his arms but she has trouble embracing him. Her father has just undergone a heart transplant and she is worried. The doctors and family have all explained that a heart is just a muscle. But for her it is much more than that. What have they done with his old heart, the one full of love and memories, the heart that burst with joy when she was born? 9/12 years • 12 x 17 cm • 64 pages • 6.50 €

THE BIG BLUE HORSE
by Irène Cohen-Janca and Maurizio Quarello
Paolo lives in Trieste, in Italy, in a somewhat unusual home: the San Giovanni psychiatric hospital where his mother is the laundry supervisor. It is a place full of people you don’t meet everyday: some are kind and some are nasty, some are ugly, some are beautiful. There’s one man who thinks he’s a tree and a woman who always paints her mouth red. Paolo isn’t scared of the patients. But the only one he really talks to is Marco who transports the bundles of linen. Marco is a horse, with big kind, wise, intelligent eyes. A horse who’s tired with his life. So when a small white van turns up at the hospital, Paolo wonders if it’s Marco’s replacement. His suspicions grow stronger when he finds a butcher eying the horse up and pressing its flesh. Paolo hurries to the office of the new doctor, Doctor Pasaglia, because people say he’s come to knock down the hospital walls, throw out the medicine and set the mad guys free. So why not let Marco free too? He has rights too! 9/12 years • 14 x 19 cm • 72 pages • 11 €

After the success of How to ruin your vacation, published in November 2010 (over fifteen thousand copies sold), Anne Percin is back with the follow-up to the adventures of Maxime, her hero with the destructive sense of humour. In a nutshell: after an eventful and comical summer at his grandmother’s house in the suburbs of Paris. Maxime returns to school with A-levels at the end of the year. This year starts on a different note: now he has a real girlfriend, Natacha, alias Pikachu, whom he met on internet. What’s more his parents have bought him a Smartphone, maybe out of guilt for their absence during the summer. And what’s more, Maxime has dug out his dad’s old Fender from his grandmother’s cellar. Maxime now has all the ingredients he needs to have a ball, complete with love and music. Naturally, the author arrives to throw a few comical spanners. In the course of his adventures Maxime has to learn to cope with love and friendship, particularly the stormy relationship between Natacha and Alex, Maxime’s best friend. He also has to reconcile dating a Sorbonne student when he is still at school: “Sometimes I feel like Shrek when he marries Princess Fiona,” he confides. He also finds love a little invasive. Why can’t he just spend whole days alone playing the guitar rather than hanging out with his girlfriend? 12 years + • 14 x 20.5 cm • 254 pages • 13.50 €

Damien is a very sensitive boy, who has always been scorned by his classmates and misunderstood by his parents. When he turns up at his new school, he miraculously finds himself taken in by the Goth gang and their leader, Samy, a kind, intelligent boy. Soon, Damien has covered himself in piercings and has started wearing black. In Samy, he finds a real friend, and maybe more. His father is not happy and decides to take retaliatory measures against his “riff-raff”. The reader discovers the depths of Damien’s suffering: for years, he has practiced self-harm, scarifying his thighs, incapable of expressing his suffering and solitude. Samy, however, has his head screwed on and knows who he is. He has no problem expressing his affection for Damien. The two boys openly announce their flourishing relationship to the rest of the school. In defiance of his father’s anger, Damien sneaks out to see Samy in private. The day of Samy’s birthday, the two boys find themselves in his bedroom. The novel’s title suddenly takes on its full meaning: make love, for the first time, or die. 14 x 20.5 cm • 104 pages • 9.50 €

Since her father remarried, Rosa has been running away more frequently and she is placed in a charity care home in the Dordogne. The home is a large house shared by two full-time social workers and four other teenagers. Everything annoys her, even Sister, a gentle soul who only wants to fit it. Rose refuses to integrate and makes no effort at all seeking conflict at every turn. Although it is against the rules she escapes the confines of the home for a change of air. She finds a river and takes a break, liberating the anger and emptiness building within her. Here she meets Mona who is from the village, and the encounter helps her break out of her solitude. But Mona’s parents don’t like her daughter’s new friend. Rosa is “too much”, just as she is for her father, now that he has remarried, and for her impotent mother. She runs away again. On the river she finds a canoe, Rosa takes it and lets herself be carried away by the current and the calming water. Her flight turns out to be one way of reconnecting with her family. 14 x 20.5 cm • 144 pages • 10 €

Julien, 16 years old, goes out to shop for his mother, and falls under the charm of a brand new BMW parked before his apartment block. He can’t help opening the door and slipping inside. The only problem is, the car belongs to Johnny, the estate’s gangland boss. Johnny suddenly turns up, and to avoid being beaten to a pulp, Julien starts up the motor and zooms off. That’s when his troubles begin. He accidentally steals petrol from a service station, and as he does a cell phone rings in the glove compartment. Julien discovers a wad of cash and decides to pick up two hitch-hikers to whom he plays the loaded daddy’s-boy before he discovers bags of pills and blocks of cannabis in the boot of the car. His adventures take him to luxury hotels and nightclubs, flirting and fighting his way around the region. It seems that the wrong person is waiting for Julien at every turn, and events take over as though he is cursed. He cannot understand why everyone has it in for him. What’s more he is totally innocent – none of it is his own fault. And it’s not his fault if Johnny has set up base camp with his parents awaiting his return. Julien’s hilarious mishaps read like the script for a silent movie, gags zing past fast and furious. 14 x 20.5 cm • 48 pages • 8.50 €
