DOGS

Issue 13 marks the third anniversary of Underdogs. To celebrate our reaching the 13th issue, this jumbo edition features 13 photographers! Please feel free to fast forward to their works and enjoy them. In keeping with Underdogs’ editorial philosophy, I believe the photographs within speak for themselves. This issue also features the 1st-3rd place winners of a photography contest that Underdogs recently juried on Wipplay at www.wipplay.com/fr_FR/concours-photo/voilagesvoilages/. The participation of 13 photographers in this issue, instead of the regular nine, is one of the many signs I see of Underdogs’ growth. I am continually amazed at how this magazine has grown from a personal project into something greater—something that is more and more resembling a community. Although Underdogs does not yet have its own website, the Facebook page currently has more than 3,700 followers. Readers’ increased interest in Underdogs has led to more inquiries from photographers who would like to submit their work to the magazine. That said, I think this is a good moment for me to be upfront about Underdogs’ submissions policy. Underdogs does not accept submissions per se. Publication in Underdogs is by invitation only. However, from time to time I receive self-submitted portfolios that I ultimately invite into the magazine. Underdogs does not have and does not plan to introduce a formal submissions process. I hold fast to my core principle that Underdogs is a means for me to share the photography that moves me. I would like to believe it is my honesty in this approach that makes the magazine what it is, and why anyone pays attention to it at all. I do not intend to be exclusive for the sake of being exclusive. While a formal submissions process might theoretically provide me with more excellent photography, the truth is that reviewing open submissions would drain my time from preparing and presenting the work I already desire to publish. Furthermore, I feel that a formal submissions process is not true to my experience of discovering others’ photography. Rather, it seems a mechanism for perpetuating publication for the sake of publication. My thoughts may change on those points. Underdogs itself has subtly yet significantly changed since Issue 1. Much remains in common—but my experience is that encountering that with which you have something “in common” leads you to think in new ways.

Photography for me is all about moment and story which becomes the witness. I love my photos to be concise and cohesive and try to achieve the best result possible with fewer subjects. Apart that I love to take photos of animals. Photography helps me to overcome my loneliness and frustrations.
