When Isa mentioned in an online interview: “…for a couple of years now, Paris has no longer been attractive to me. Lately, most of my good images have been taken whilst travelling and just a few in my own neighborhood” [in-public link], I felt she was describing what is a common problem. A problem of what was once an exciting subject or place to us, becoming overfamiliar or jaded. I actually think it’s normal to encounter some ups and downs in our relationships with our subject matter. Some photographers may be able to re-invigorate their work by travelling to fresh places, feasting their gaze on new situations. Often different countries or cultures can provide an alternative universe of imagery, at once familiar but different. But how long does the excitement that these new visual possibilities provide, last? Maybe some photographers are more comfortable near their home. They discover that by travelling they may have lost their visual roots and they produce their best work when they are around friends and their familiar visual motifs. There are plenty of online articles on how to deal with the problem of stagnation. They usually provide the guidance to change something: your environment, your camera, your approach, your trousers etc... Maybe something changes within the photographer, their health may change, or they may fall in or out of love. It seems any change has the potential to alter our outlook, to refresh our minds and the way we see the world around us. Maybe it’s important to just be open to new ways of looking at familiar subjects, and to be receptive to new ideas which may offer us the chance to evolve our imagery. Something that is often advised is to search out new photographers and find inspiration in their work, or maybe to revisit old “friends”. I am sure this can work but I feel we have to be careful not to become slaves to our influences. Perhaps we can find ways of seeing the world that we can identify with, from artists in other fields, so we may be able to translate our excitement of recognizing a shared sensibility into situations we encounter without the danger of imitation. I am certainly not suggesting any golden solutions to an age old problem but simply hope it may trigger some thoughtful recognition. One thing is for sure we have to remain true to our own view of the world wherever we may look.
