DOGS

In Memory of Alexandra Höhn It has come to the attention of Isa and me that Alexandra Höhn, whose work was featured in Underdogs Issue 8, is now deceased. I would like to give you a moment to remember her photography: Alexandra on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandrahoehn/ Alexandra on Tumblr: http://alexhoehn.tumblr.com/ Alexandra in Underdogs Issue 8 (pages 16-21): https://issuu.com/isagelb/docs/underdogs_issue_8 At the risk of my writing on the subject being overly simplistic, or coming off as insensitive to Alexandra or others, I think one’s death has a profound impact on the reception of one’s art. Photography may be exemplary in this regard. While a photographer is alive, I think it is easier to separate the photographer’s work and life—after all, photographers do many other things besides photography. Photographic acts, in a strict sense, may take up only a small fraction of the photographer’s lifetime. Even with respect to photographers whose work we admire, we may (wrongfully in my opinion) take for granted they will continue to produce more photos, or (rightfully in my opinion) understand that other concerns in their lives are more important than their producing photos. Yet upon the death of a photographer, these relationships change. We can no longer take for granted that there will be “more photos.” The photographer’s work begins to stand in more prominently in the place of the photographer’s life, and the two become more conjoined. As appreciators of the photographer’s work, our craving for “more photos” transforms and matures into finding deeper meanings in the photos that remain. Our imaginations settle upon them, and in so doing we are led to imagine the life of the photographer who created the image. It may be in imagining the lives of other photographers through their images that we reveal what is vital yet obscure in our photographic practice, involving judgment, openness to experience, and affirmation. Ultimately, we thank those photographers, including Alexandra, for what they have given.
