Primary Science Day Investigations was the theme of this year's amazing Primary Science Day.
To celebrate their success in their PBL projects some children from Years 5 and 6 became student teachers for the morning. They visited other classes and helped the students replicate their own experiments.
Meanwhile Years 5 and 6. investigated the tensile strength and design properties of spaghetti by making a bridge and then testing how much weight it could take.

Chinese New Year Celebrations
This year, ISB celebrated the Chinese New Year by inviting our Chinese teachers from the Confucius institute to showcase Chinese traditional crafts and introduce traditional activities to our students, who were delighted to learn about calligraphy, the dragon dance and other Chinese customs. Our KS1 students were wonderful in the themed show they treated everybody to during the assembly. A special thank you goes out to our Chinese parents, who shared delicious dishes in the Chinese traditional cuisine and brought artefacts for our students to admire and learn about.

New Chair of PTA
Thank you, PTA for the lovely “martisor" offered to all the ladies in the school. It was such a perfect way to start the day and to welcome the spring. The PTA has recently elected a new chair, who is to lead the PTA until the next elections take place – We would like to congratulate Aura Tzanos and thank her for her time and involvement in the life of our community. A huge thank you goes to the former PTA Chair, Mrs Georgeta Clarke for all her help and contribution to the PTA and to the ISB community.

Winter Activities
Our KS2 and KS3 students enjoyed every second of the winter activities they were accompanied on by their teachers. They braved the cold and had loads of fun on their ice skating trips in Cismigiu Park and took over the slopes in Poiana Brasov on their amazing ski trips.

Workshop for Parents Another very popular workshop organised by the SSS (Student Support Services) department was "Raising an independent child", which was aimed at all parents who wanted to share their experience and at the same time find out new, relevant information from our Students Support Service specialists. The idea behind this workshop was finding the best balance between independence and responsibility and to become more aware of the key elements that lead to a healthy form of independence.

Friendship and Inclusion week
This year “Friendship and Inclusion Week” started on the 2nd of February with the celebration of the Chinese New Year together with our friends from Conil School. We made Chinese dragons, lanterns and fans together as well as finger painted blossomed cherry trees. The week followed with the visit of our exceptionally talented friends from Special Olympics Romania. Our Year 5 and Year 6 students were very impressed by the numerous medals their friends from Special Olympics Romania won in Olympiads across the world. During their visit, the athletes shared their life stories with our students, they made Friendship bracelets together and talked about moral values that are important in sports, like courage, perseverance, determination. The students designed posters with the theme “Believe in yourself”.

Mrs. Emilia Ispas, the Educational Programs Director at Special Olympics also explained us the difference between Special Olympics and Paralympics: Paralympics competitions include people who are physically challenged, while Special Olympics are competitions for young people with intellectual challenges. On Wednesday 8th February our Year 5 and Year 6 students met Mr. Laurentiu Serban during their assembly. Mr. Laurentiu Serban lost his leg during a military mission in Afganistan. He is an example of courage, mental and physical discipline. He talked to our students about the importance of these skills and the big difference they make when overcoming a traumatic event. With special prosthesis he continues to climb mountains, he flies paragliding and jogs even faster than before. The children with Down Syndrome from Caritas Association joined KS1 and Early Years during their Computing, Music and Arts lessons in KS1 and during their Integrated Classroom Activities in Early Years. They have also made beautiful Friendship bracelets together and gave them as a present to their friends. Many thanks to Mr. Bogdan Anicescu, from the National Association of Deaf People in Romania who presented the sign language to our students and to Light Into Europe Charity for honouring our invitation to visit us during Friendship Week with their amazing guide dogs. During the Friendship Week the students raised money for the Paralympic Team and for Light in to Europe Charity through Coin Challenge Charity Campaign. A total of 2007.30lei (in 10 and 50 Bani coins) was placed on the pictures in our Gallery area. The older students were completing pictures of wheelchairs for the Paralympic team and our infants were completing the pictures of the dogs. Â Well done to everyone involved in this very successful week: the Student Services Department, Primary teachers, our guests and everyone for their generous help.

We are very pleased to announce that we have received our letter of authorisation from the International Baccalaureate Organisation. Starting with September 2017 ISB will be an IB World School offering the IB Diploma Programme.

Eco-Schools Project ISB is proud to announce our membership of the Eco Schools project. Eco Schools is an organisation that consists of 49000 schools in 64 different countries. The key aim of Eco Schools is to “Ensure young people have power to be the change for sustainability that our world needs by engaging them in fun, action-orientated and socially responsible learning.” They achieve this through their 7 step framework where schools: Form an Eco-Committee; Carry out an Environmental Review; Make an Action Plan; Monitor and Evaluate; Link this work to the Curriculum; Inform and Involve the whole school community; Produce an Eco-Code. Schools can focus on a wide range of themes which include: Biodiversity and nature; Climate Change; Energy; Global Citizenship; Health and Wellbeing; Litter; School Grounds; Transport; aster; Water. What this means for ISB We will be creating student led committees in Primary and Secondary who will decided how they think ISB can have more positive impact on the environment. These ideas will then be taken to an executive committee led by students made up of representatives from both sections of the school, teachers, administrative staff and parents. This committee will then develop an action plan identifying our top priorities we will start work on improving our school!

This initiative involves the whole school community - students, staff and parents - working together, so we value your input. If you want any further information please contact Sarah Newsham sarah.newsham@isb.ro (Primary) or mustafa.karabulut@isb.ro (Secondary).

Advanced Child Protection Workshop Child protection and safeguarding is a responsibility we take very seriously at ISB. All our teachers and admin staff are trained annually in matters related to child protection; identifying children in need and how to support. As lead child protection officers for the school we are also trained in managing and responding to situations. An Advanced Child Protection Course held at the Crystal Palace Hotel helped to refresh and update our skills.
