SET OF 12 PICTURE SERIES, FRAMED IN POSTCARD

THE . . . . .ART . . . . .OF . . .DOING . . . . . . . NOTHING .................................................... People are usually taken aback by such a metaphysical topic. Perhaps they wonder at how shallow or subjective it is. Or perhaps. they know that there is nothing like, nothing, yet we have a term of it’s meaning dedicated in the dictionary. The art of doing nothing documents the variations the term takes and the perceptions people have about doing nothing. The idea of nothingness is subjective, yet it is general and universal in it’s term. It is chaotic yet clear. It is simple yet complex. This book provides the viewer with a set of 12 perforable postcards, which are not only usuable, but are also a charming picture book, a trigger for ideas, allowing the readers to visualize their own environments with regard to the bean bag.

THE ART OF DOING NOTHING

............................................................................

‘There is never enough time to do nothing.’ The ony time such a topic marked itself on a wikipedia page was when Mark Owen released his fourth studio album in 2013. The album art has the perfect pinch of wit in it, part photograph, part illustration. To think of something so subjective and odd, which is mostly only discussed on the importance of taking a break in this rushed up culture, the content could have troubles in spreading it’s wings in different directions. The metaphysical nature of the topic finds its own general baseline, something everyone can relate to, despite their cultural or educational background. That is the beauty of human universality. Scientists and mathematicians have their detailed and heavy theories of nothingness, which lay men fail to understand. But common sense bestows upon us the intelligence to gage things from the top most layer, the specialists might dissect it later to get deeper to the roots. So when scientists launch their theories, it is not a complete waste to common man. We all wonder whether an empty world is possible, whether there are vacuums, if there is anything like nothingness. Many feel that whoever asserts the existence of something has the burden of proof. If an astronomer says there is water on the Moon, then it is up to him to provide data in support of the lunar water. If we were not required to have evidence, theorists would explain the phenomena with one set set of things that could add an extra entity.

To prevent such entities, mataphysicians with the empty world add in only what has been proved and verified. But if we start with nothing, we lack the bearings needed to navigate forward. Why is there something rather than nothing? Even when the universe wasn’t born, there was something. Something to lead us to where we are now. So was there never anything like nothing? A more popular notion that nothingness takes is to associate it with simplicity and simplicity with likelihood. There is only one answere to ‘no’, which is ‘yes’. There is no such thing as nothing, zero does not exist. Everything is something, nothing is nothing, man lives with more of things than just bread, which is the value of simplicity to mostly everyone. That is also where the subjectivity of nothingness steps in. Someone’s idea of nothing is someone else’s idea of something. It can vary from anything which is too shallow and top-most, to anything which is deep and philosophical. Yet, it is the general humour or wit of nothingness that interests everyone across the globe, than the details of the theories that are bound over time. What caught my attention was how people interacted with an idea that was shown to them in an unusual way. There is an invisible unity among people when it comes to the act of doing nothing. We have similar actions, thoughts, even gestures towards something like this. Many even include the act of sleeping and resting as doing nothing, probably the ones who are too work oriented might even find it a necessary thing to be abolished! It’s how we percieve our lives and give value to our actions that define our notion of nothingness. For a designer, even the leisure time, is a process of some work underconstruction, or an idea to be built. We eat, sleep, drink, breathe design. It is not just a course we study or practise, it’s a behaviour we embrace .

But a lay man might not consider doing nothing as doing something. The world is more on the simple lines. With time, the change in our living standards. We live in a complex world now. Simple life had nothing to do with nothing, it was more acceptable. Now we try to draw lines categorizing our work as a means of life and everything else as nothing. Life becomes duller that way. And we require more of happiness, than we did before! The streets are one of the best places to start from. There is so much hustle and movement, we rarely get a chance to stop. Creating an imagery which would attract people’s attention and perhaps give them a moment of humour. I chose to portray the art of doing nothing through the environment I live in. We all have tasks to complete everyday, but in between those tasks are the moments of nothingness, some people call it the random grey area. I found those moments quite hilarious, and adding an element of surprise, ie: the bean bag, creates a comical look.

THERE IS AN INVISIBLE UNITY AMONG PEOPLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE ACT OF DOING NOTHING.

THE ART OF DOING NOTHING talks about the perceptions of people on the idea of nothingness. Being a meta-physical and objective topic, the expression of the term changes and varies in many ways. This book is a personal journey of slight humour in the idea of nothingness that I find in my surrounding. The postcards are of size 4.25 inches by 6.375 inches.
