WEEK 9 READING: perspective as symbolic form Panofsky, E 1991

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? Durer has established three primary rules for perspectival projection. The first two rules refer to the power of the vanishing point, being that all perpendicular surfaces meet at this point and all parallel lines have a common vanishing point. In addition to this, as a surface recedes into space, it is said to diminish progressively, and consistently with other equal dimensions.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space?

Put simply, homogenous space is rational space. As a result, the elements in the space are afforded no status of their own, independent of the established relationship of the space. Homogenous space is hence the result of logical and geometric construction - it is a representation of space.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 & 2

Perspective 1: The abandoned city This view represents Clarice after it was abandoned for the first time. This abandonment was represented by the lack of people in the scene, while the society’s objects remain eerily in place.

Perspective 2: The atrophy of time After Clarice’s tumultuous past, the second perspective depicts the city after years of abandonment and decay. I chose to represent this through the inclusion of numerous plants growing over the Old Quad throughout the scene.

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 & 2

Perspective 1: The abandoned city In order to establish the sense of splendor found in the original Clarice, this scene was created using opulent textures and luxurious objects. This in conjunction with the intense lighting, creates a haunting and ominous mood as it appears that the people of Clarice has just abandoned the city.

Perspective 2: The atrophy of time This scene’s eerie mood is established through the darkness and intense shadows. This is complemented by the sense of decay created throughout the image from the use of textures and flora.

WEEK 4 READING: practice: architecture, technique and representation Allen, S 2000

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice?

Autographic projection is highly dependent on the relationship between artist and artwork, and hence relies on the authenticity of direct contact from the creator. Allographic works exist in copies, and are produced without the direct influence of the creator. As a result allographic practice creates new realities, established through notation.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? Architects use representational technique to establish the paradox between real and imagined spaces. As a result, architectural drawing is transitive in nature and thus can entwine the new with the obsolete. Consequently, tension is created between the representation of notation and the actuality of the building. Modern cities contain tangible and intangible information, and thus new representational techniques are required to engage all the complexities of modernity and allow architects to work simultaneously between the abstract and the concrete.
