The event is being coordinated by the local sister city committees and is being supported by Island Cruising NZ. Applications are now open and spaces are limited! Star Gazing Sailors probably spend more time observing the stars for hours on end than your regular house dwelling person does. While on night watch, gazing at the stars, watching for satellites and shooting stars is one of my favourite ways to pass the time. Of course traditionally sailors also used the stars to navigate and in last weeks member's workshop we looked at ways we can use the stars to navigate. This year Aotearoa officially celebrated Matariki. When this star cluster - also known as Pleiades was seen rising in the midwinter morning sky, this signifies the start of the Māori New Year. The cluster can be seen every morning for around eight days around this time. The easiest way to find Matariki is to use other identifiable star groups as markers. Before sunrise, look to the Southern Cross, or Te Punga. From there, look east and you can see the constellation Tautoru, or Orion's Belt - often referred to as The Pot. Next, trace a line northwards from the three stars of Tautoru to a triangular-shaped cluster of stars and you will have found Hyades, or Te Kokotā. Look towards the left again, and just off the shoulder of Te Kokotā is Matariki. Matariki can also be seen during the summer months in the same location after the sun has set. It's also considered a time to reflect on the past, look to the future, and celebrate the present. Here is a video on how to find Matariki

Hydrovane What do people say about theirs? By Sarah Curry of Hydrovane International Marine

Well, we’ve had the Hydrovane installed now for a couple of months. Unbelievable – what a different world for us. We love it. I mean, we’re absolutely totally impressed with the technology and engineering behind it. Zoe (as we’ve named it) is amazing. So far, she’s steered us 300 to 400 miles. and has done great. It’s just so simple to use, yet the engineering is so complex and robust. I’m sure we’ll do well with her for many many many miles. It took us about two days to get her fully installed. I was able to find some 1-1/2 pvc Schedule 80 electric conduit that was ‘almost’ 2″ outside diameter that we used to dry fit everything. That was absolutely key. In your directions to new purchasers, you should make a bigger thing out of that. Dry fit it first using a mockup. Once that was done, a grinder and cutoff wheel to make all three pipes the exact size. . . . and we were good to go. We’ve got things dialed in pretty good with respect to adjust course underway and all that. I’m sure that in time, this will all become intuitive. It’s interesting to realize and understand the physics behind the wind vane steering. On a beam reach, for example, as the wind increases, so does the ‘apparent wind’ angle. So, we’re learning how to “fiddle” with those adjustments. .

Taking Better Photographs at Sea When you're heading off on a voyage of a lifetime it is natural to want to document it in the best way possible. There will be big fish, incredible sunsets, fun times to photograph and remember in years to come. You may want to share them on social media, email them to friends & family, get them printed in an album, accompany a written article or to put in a frame. There are a few simple things you can do to make your sailing snaps look even more awesome. Equipment No matter how much camera gear you have - the equipment will not make you a better photographer. The best camera to have is the one in your hand. Newer phones can take incredible photographs, they make sharing your pictures on social media or with friends super easy, and you've got your photo album in your pocket wherever you go. Digital cameras & various lenses will take much higher quality photographs and allow you to potentially shoot things further away, but then you've got to carry it all with you. GoPro's are waterproof and can be used to record images, video, time-lapse, slow motion video, sound and come with a variety of great accessories to help you take some awesome shots. Drones take amazing images of boats sailing, but just be aware of the rules when it comes to flying them. I.e don't fly over people or other people's property, don't fly within 4km of an airport or where aeroplanes are regularly landing & taking off, remember some people find them quite intrusive, and you need to work out how you are going to launch & land it on the boat. Taking Care of Your Gear Camera gear as with all other electronics hate salt water and moisture. Ensure your lens is clean and free from salt or fingerprints. I keep my phone in a life proof case so you can wash with fresh water. Camera lenses need some extra care - salty water can scratch their sensitive surfaces. Carry camera gear in a waterproof bag and of course don't leave anything sitting out in the hot sun.

What Makes A Good Photograph We can all take a snapshot, but a good photograph is like a visual statement. If you are wanting to take an awesome photograph, here are some things to have in your mind: The subject - perhaps it is a person, a landscape or a photograph of your boat or a scene. Think about what you are trying to capture Placement - where you are going to put your subject in the frame - the rule of 3rds works well - i.e. 1/3 ocean, 2/3 sky for landscapes. Sometimes having your subject off centre looks better than in the middle of the frame.

The quality of the light - what is in the sun, what is in the shadows - try not to shoot in to the sun or have people squinting The frame - what you want to leave in the photo and what needs to be left out - you can also use your cropping tool in post production The horizon - this is a big one for on-water photographs - having a level horizon is really important. It is easy to adjust using the cropping tool on your phone.

Point of view - the angle from which you take the photograph from - try getting down low and shooting up, or above shooting down, or at eye level if taking photos of people or animals. Sharpness - focus, not blurry, hold your camera still Graphic composition - using interesting lines and shapes Action - a decisive moment in time - a handshake, a kiss, a pose with a fish, crossing the finish line What is behind - avoid trees growing out of people's heads etc

Being Creative Here are some ideas for how to use some of the skills mentioned above: Morning or evening light is much softer and you can create interesting shadows Portraits - always better in the shade to avoid squinting and create softer faces. Try using portrait mode when taking photos of people. Gardens - always look better after it has rained and the leaves are shiny Reflections - using the sea to distort or reflect the scenery Using frames - such as leaves on trees, or a window or door frame Storms Long exposure - great for waterfalls Colour - using blocks of colour or patterns Zoom in - take close up photos of interesting features or unusual colours

Post Production Once you have taken your photograph, go through and select which images you like the most and delete the duplicates. Then: On your phone - click 'Edit' Crop - cut out anything that you don't want in the photo sometimes there might be a funny shadow, someone's arm in the wrong place, crop it out. Level your horizon - this is really easy to do on your phone in the same cropping area. Click on the magic wand on an iPhone - you can then tweak other settings such as the brightness or exposure to enhance your photos. Use filters to explore other 'looks' Sharing & Storing Your Photos Social media is a great place to share your photographs with others and also to store them to view later. I also like to make a printed photo album every year - companies such as Snapfish allow you to upload the photographs you want to use and you can use their custom templates or make your own designs. Remember to backup your photographs to a cloud location so that if you lose your phone you don't lose all your photographs as well.

Other Tips: Live photos on iPhone captures a MOV video file every time you snap a photo on your iPhone. It includes three seconds of video and sound and can appear to make your image come to life. However they take a lot of extra data to store this photo and it can quickly fill up your storage space. The live photos also don't look good in low lights. I recommend turning them off unless you are wanting to photograph a waterfall and in which case you can use the live image to create a long exposure photo. On iPhones you can share photos easily with other iPhone users by 'Air-dropping' them across. The fisheye lens can take a wider angle and create some interesting shots.

Other Great Uses for Cameras Put your GoPro on the end of a boat hook and stick it under the water to record whatever is wrapped around your prop. Record a video of the funny noise your engine is making to take to the mechanic Take a photograph of the make/model/serial number/measurement of the part you need Use the 'notes' app on your iPhone - you can scan your documents, passports etc and turn them in to multipage pdf's.

Thanks to the Pacific Rally Participants for all their amazing photos!

Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001. Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years. During their time on the water, Terry discovered that high tech components in a watermaker are not only unnecessary, they are usually the first thing to break down, and most often in remote locations. When helping out other cruisers, he frequently found that by-passing these components would get their watermakers working once again. That's when he realized that a simple, reliable, and affordablewatermaker could be made. Terry developed the early version of an engine driven model and took it cruising. He put it to the test for five years. He then returned to New Zealand to design and build a reliable watermaker without any superfluous gadgets. Thus was born a revolutionary new concept in watermakers. One that works all the time, is easy to operate, and doesn’t break the bank.
