The PredictWind Tracker for this year's rally

From the helm

This time last month we were patiently awaiting a weather window to depart to the Islands, and since then nearly 72 Pacific Rally yachts as well as many other Island Cruising members and other cruisers have set off to various places in the Pacific!

There were a few dramas en-route, firstly a pretty rough ride out of New Zealand, followed by a glassy calm patch and a few days of motoring which chewed through the fuel. We had some impressive acts of generosity among the rally fleet with some mid-ocean fuel transfers to boats in need before the wind filled in again and developed in to a nasty low crossing NZ creating a strong northerly across the rally track.

Many of the boats managed to find good shelter in Minerva Reef, while others weathered the storm A big shoutout to the crew of Kuia who stood by when one of the other boats was having some issues with a mysterious leak when the weather got rough. You guys are awesome.

One crew member got badly bitten by a big fish they'd caught requiring 10 staples to sew him back up again, we also had a crushed hand injury, so the Cat 1 Medical kits and Offshore Medic skills learned from Oceania all got a bit of a work out!

We also had one boat lose their chart plotter for a few hours - thank goodness for the paper charts!

Thanks also to David on Perigee who created a morning VHF net for the rally boats any anyone else nearby to join in with, which was great fun and very much appreciated by everyone

There were some excellent fish caught along the way - check out the photos later on in the newsletter and thanks to Ballingers Hunting & Fishing for providing some great fishing tackle in the rally packs!

On arrival in Fiji and Tonga the rally boats were welcomed with various festivities. Nawi Island Marina in Savusavu opened early especially for the rally boats to enter and they were invited to their opening party which looked like lots of fun

In Tonga we were very warmly welcomed by Tonga Tourism who helped facilitate the officials for us and enabling the boats to get cleared at anchor.

Big Mama, Earle and their son Andrew made us all feel very welcome at Pangaimotu Island Their yacht club was badly damaged in the tsunami last year but despite this we had a wonderful time with them with BBQ's on the beach, a sports day, and lots of cold beer was drunk as well as running us all back and forth to town in their boat

Tonga Tourism laid on a fantastic welcome event with a Tongan feast, kava and dancing which was a wonderful day. We even got to catch up with David Hunt who many of you will remember from way back in the 1980's when he helped create the Island Cruising Rally!

Nuku'alofa is well worth a stop on your Pacific travels. There are some excellent restaurants, some really interesting places to visit, a rich history, lots of shops selling almost everything you could possibly need, and the International Airport is there for crew, and friends and family flying in and out. Tongan people are so kind and friendly.

One of the great things about being on a rally is the people you meet. The families have all teamed up and the kids are having a whale of a time with each other, which of course makes life a bit easier for the parents too! We've also got about 10 boats who were on the rally with us last year and they are able to share some of their knowledge of the places they've been to with the first timers.

This time next month we will be doing our special clearance in to the Lau Group in Fiji. This is not normally a port of entry, so we are flying the officials out to Vanua Balavu to arrange clearance for the rally boats and a few extras who are joining us This saves heaps of time where you'd otherwise have to sail straight past these spectacular islands to clear in at Savusavu and then sail back upwind again to get back there Thanks to our agent Yacht Help who are arranging the clearance for us.

Did you know we matched up over 60 crew members with various boats on the rally? This is a great way to be part of the action without having your own boat to sail. Check out the CrewSeeker page on our website for details

Last week I took part in the Pearls of Boating Wisdom course here in Christchurch. Ross Porter has put together a comprehensive course to learn about all the different systems on board, all excellent things to know when you are crossing an ocean. Check out the details later in the newsletter.

Welcome aboard to our new sponsors this month! Check them all out on our website here. You can very quickly recoup the cost of your $95.00 membership by taking advantage of the generous savings!

We've got an event at Cloud 9 in Fiji on the 13th July - all welcome! So if you are up in Fiji please do come and join us It will be heaps of fun

Thanks to all the rally participants who have been sending through their photos of their adventures and kindly allowing me to share them so you can get a feel fo

Do Good Things

Here at Island Cruising, we love to do our bit to support the communities we visit and the efforts of awesome organisations such as Sea Mercy Fiji, Days For Girls, Lions Club and Rotary.

This year boats on the rally were able to assist with transporting sanitary kits beautifully hand made by the volunteers here in New Zealand - Days For Girls, we also had one boat take up a case of reading glasses on behalf of the Lions Club. These recycled glasses and kits for girls will be distributed to communities in need throughout Fiji by Sea Mercy and the awesome efforts of Jonathan Robinson and his team.

We also teamed up with the Rotary Club in Opua to transport clothing to their sister club in Nuku'alofa. Many people have been affected by the tsunami and eruption last year and the local Rotary Club will ensure those clothes go to good homes!

Thanks to everyone who helped with these projects!

Liam Clark takes on more technical sales

Lusty & Blundell Ltd, New Zealand’s leading distributor of top-quality marine products and systems, has expanded showroom manager Liam Clark’s role into the crucial area of technical sales.

Based at L&B’s head office in Albany, on Auckland’s North Shore, Liam’s key area of focus will be Raymarine’s market-leading marine electronics. This will include working with key customers to understand what they are trying to achieve and then suggesting the best possible packages to meet their needs.

Having joined L&B in 2018 in a 19-year-old junior sales support role, Liam’s ability to quickly absorb new information, along with his hands-on experience and fast-growing practical knowledge, saw him become an integral member of Lusty & Blundell’s internal sales team before being promoted to showroom manager in 2022.

“Liam’s on-water experience and the additional knowledge he has gained since joining L&B has given him an extremely sound understanding of our broad range of products,” says L&B sales director Cameron Maher. “Liam’s enthusiasm to service our clients and run his team is an inspiration to all of us.”

Liam grew up around the ocean and boats and is an avid boatie, spearfisher and multiple boat owner.

“I love spending lots of time on the water and getting to use as many products in the L&B range as possible,” he says. “That practical experience then allows me to recommend the best possible solutions for our clients: products and systems that are not only reliable and high-performing but also perfectly suited to their needs.”

Liam says he takes pride in the strong relationships he has fostered with key L&B clients and enjoys working with and pushing his team of three showroom sales representatives to achieve ever-higher levels of customer service and expertise.

Liam says he is very excited about his latest role and how dynamic it is.

“This new position will allow me to use the skills and experience I already have to gain an even deeper understanding of our huge range of great products. It will also let me quickly grasp the technical details and therefore the potential of the latest releases as they come to market.”

A new web-based app called the Marine Vessel Portal (MVP) has been developed to help New Zealand boat owners, marinas and councils reduce the risk of marine pest incursions. The MVP is already a key tool in marine biosecurity management, recording surveillance activity, findings and the presence of marine pests in bays and harbours from Northland to Bay of Plenty. It also records information about the regional hull surveillance programmes, including biofouling levels and pest species found on boats during routine inspections. By signing up to the MVP boat owners and marina operators can be empowered to better manage their biofouling risk.

The Portal will include:

Information about a boat’s recent hull maintenance or cleaning can be entered into the MVP by boat owners, maintenance contractors, haul outs and dive companies. The MVP also contains results from hull surveys undertaken by council marine biosecurity teams in Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

When a vessel arrives in a new location marina staff will be able to see when a boat was cleaned, its antifoul coatings, and details of recent inspections. This, along with talking with the boat owner about where a vessel has traveled, will help them decide if a boat presents a marine biosecurity risk or not.

How to get started

Boat owners can claim their boat in the system by entering some basic information about their vessel, including its name, description, usual location and their contact details. Uploading a photo is also helpful.

Once submitted, our team will work to match it up with a boat already in the system and ask the boat owner to confirm the match - or they will set up a new entry if needed.

With access to the MVP, owners can see details of past dive inspections of their vessel including any the level of fouling and marine pest species found. They can also add their own information about their vessel’s antifouling maintenance

Participating marina operators can view this information, negating the need for vessel owners to carry/email documents before arriving at a marina or in some cases, between regions.

The Marine Vessel Portal is an app developed and shared by Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Waikato Regional Council. These councils are empowered to collect information about vessels by the Biosecurity Act, but participation by boat owners is optional.

When a boat owner claims their boat they will need to provide permission for the identity of their vessel to be confirmed with their marina operator (if applicable) and will have an opportunity to review and accept a Privacy Agreement. A two-step authentication process will protect the integrity of vessel data.

Click here to sign yourself up to the portal.

Learn More about Marine Biosecurity

This year's marine biosecurity webinar series will focus on two key challenges we face in the fight against marine pests: funding critical marine biosecurity work, and filling the gaps in our clean hull framework. There is also a special session for council and agency staff.

These webinars are designed to prompt conversation, discussion and broader understanding of key issues involved and we encourage industry to attend.

Check out the upcoming Marine Biosecurity webinars here.

Hydrovane What do people say about theirs?

If you sail with an autopilot, you'll already know how awesome they are, especially when you sail for long distances short handed, however as with all electronics on board, you need to consider the power demands on running things 24/7, and what your strategy would be if the equipment failed or if you were unable to generate the power to run it.

Steering issues can and do happen, so having a back up emergency steering solution is essential for going offshore.

A Hydrovane is an awesome solution It uses no power, is a back up for if your steering or rudder fails, it is silent, stylish and can be installed on most vessels

Check out the Hydrovane options here.

TKAMALII is a magnificent yacht and represents the ultimate conclusion of traditional timber boat construction The current owners have sailed around the world on many yachts, and the yacht is without doubt the most comfortable, sea kindly, sturdy ocean-going vessel they have ever sailed With only a handful of owners in her life she has been the love and passion of all who have owned her Featuring a deep, full keel hull form for enhanced windward performance for this deceptively fast and exceptionally comfortable cruiser. The present owners purchased the vessel in California and after major hull restoration, in 2013 cruised the Pacific to her new life in New Zealand where upgrading has continued in between use as a family cruiser with the finest of pedigrees. A detailed history is available on request. More information here.

Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001 Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years. During their time on the water, Terry discovered that high tech components in a watermaker are not only unnecessary, they are usually the first thing to break down, and most often in remote locations When helping out other cruisers, he frequently found that by-passing these components would get their watermakers working once again That's when he realized that a simple, reliable, and affordablewatermaker could be made

Terry developed the early version of an engine driven model and took it cruising He put it to the test for five years He then returned to New Zealand to design and build a reliable watermaker without any superfluous gadgets Thus was born a revolutionary new concept in watermakers One that works all the time, is easy to operate, and doesn’t break the bank

Island Cruising NZ members get a $300 discount on a new water maker from Open Ocean!
