Welcome aboard Island Harbour Marina Welcome to Island Harbour Marina, the Isle of Wight’s ‘garden’ marina. A tranquil and beautiful spot, with plenty of grass areas and surrounded by green fields and a view of the lovely River Medina. If you have children or dogs, then this is the perfect marina for you, as you can soak up the scenery and enjoy the picturesque riverbank walks. I am very proud to be the new manager of Island Harbour. I used to play here as a mere lad in the 1970s and never dreamed that I would one day be lucky enough to work at such a lovely place. I have enjoyed my time here immensely and look forward to many more happy years to come. Over the winter months we have completely refurbished the marina’s lock gates. Not an easy task, but well worth all of the effort, to make sure that the coming season will be trouble free. With more boats here than ever before, in both the marina and ashore, I am pleased to say that Island Harbour is now becoming the place that it was always destined to be. I am extremely lucky to have a great team around me and we all pride ourselves on the personal service that we can provide. So, if you ever need anything, feel free to come and see us, as we are always glad to help. With me in the office are Suzanne and Remmi and the lockkeepers this year are Bert, Dave and Nathan. Outside, we have Simon and Nick to help us with all of our maintenance requirements. The Breeze Restaurant and Bar is going from strength to strength, boasting a brand new menu this year. With Jane and her staff in the bar and Scott’s team in the kitchen, all of your needs will be very well catered for! As ever, Richardsons Yacht Services are also here to help you with any mechanical or maintenance issues that you might have. Terry, Carla and their crew can provide a full range of boat repair services and also have an excellent selection of chandlery and provisions. You will find more details in their advertisement on the back page of this brochure. So, all-in-all, what more could you ask for in a marina? We are even lucky enough to have our very own Yacht Club, so if you can think of anything else, then please let us know! We have a customer feedback form in the rear pocket of this brochure and would be grateful if you can complete it. After the long, wet and windy winter months, I wish everyone a very happy season’s sailing. I am sure that we will all have a terrific year ahead of us. Darren Cooke, Marina Manager.

C

OMING

SOON‌..

As the Island’s only garden marina, we are extremely excited to announce that permission has recently been granted for us to develop the community of Island Harbour even further. Alongside the creation of new apartments, will be a brand new onsite restaurant, together with some retail and marine industrial units. At the same time, this work will enable us to enhance the beauty of this already lovely place, by creating some new landscape garden areas. We hope that the local community will join in and help us with this, so that the marina becomes a place that we can all be proud of. When the work is completed, one of the loveliest marinas on the South Coast, will be even better! A marina brought into the 21st century, but still retaining all of its old charm. 14

ISLAND HARBOUR FAMILY OPEN DAY DUE TO LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE WILL BE HOLDING OUR SECOND FAMILY OPEN DAY ON

SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014 On 14th of September 2013, Island Harbour Marina held its first family Open Day. The main aim was to raise much needed funds for the Sea Cadets, in particular the Ryde Unit. It was also a good opportunity to build recognition for our up and coming marina and for other local businesses alike. We were absolutely delighted to have over 30 local businesses turn up and set up their stalls. They were also kind enough to donate prizes towards the charity raffle that was held later in the day. Wight Island Radio provided a live radio broadcast throughout the day, giving a full commentary on the day’s events, playing background music and providing a vital link between everything that was going on. The children were kept entertained with theatre workshops, face painting, a bouncy castle, kayak rides, treasure hunts and much, much more. The Breeze was packed throughout the day, having put on a hog roast as well as their usual excellent menu. With so much food around the site, no one went hungry! The day started at 08:00am with a boat jumble, the third one that the marina has held. These have proved very popular indeed here. At 10:00 am, the main event began. Mid‑way through the afternoon, the Island’s Sea Cadet band burst into life and gave us an excellent marching rendition. All-in-all, it was a fantastic day and we would like to give a massive thank you to everyone involved. A superb £1,402.08 was raised for a very worthy charity. We are sure that this year will be another huge success, so save the date in your diary. This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever. So, bring your boat over and stay for a bumper weekend. For any local businesses interested in reserving a pitch, simply call us today on 01983 539994.

TO THE

P.S. R YDE The Paddle Steamer Ryde, also affectionately known as ‘The Ryde Queen’, has been a feature of the marina since around 1970. Sadly, for many years she has been slowly deteriorating into her current dilapidated condition. However, she was originally brought here to replace the smaller Medway Queen as a floating restaurant and nightclub. The Medway Queen arrived in 1966 and became so popular that a larger paddle steamer was needed. The P.S Ryde was commissioned by Southern Railway in 1936 by William Denny & Bros of Dumbarton of Clydesdale, as a sister ship to the P.S. Sandown.

R YDE Q UEEN

Launched on the 23rd of April 1937, she replaced the P.S. Duchess of Norfolk on the Portsmouth to Ryde passenger service route, currently operated by the Wightlink catamarans. For steam buffs, the Ryde was amongst the first ships to be built with triple expansion diagonal reciprocating steam engines. The P.S. Ryde was 223 feet long (68 m) and 52ft in the beam (16m) and weighed in at 566 tonnes. She was licensed to carry 1050 passengers. She boasted an observation lounge on her promenade deck and on the main deck she had a large saloon, a tea room, a ladies’ room, a smoking room, and a restaurant. A two-class ship, 'saloon class' and 'third class', P.S. Ryde operated an all-year-round service prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.

38

During this time, she served as a minesweeper and in 1942, she was converted into an anti-aircraft vessel and took part in the Normandy Landings of June 1944. By coincidence, the Medway Queen also saw great war service, heroically assisting with the Dunkirk evacuations. Returning to passenger service in 1945, the Ryde became part of the British Rail fleet and continued in service until 1969, by which time she was the last paddle steamer working on the Solent. She then came here to Binfield Marina, as we used to be called, to start her career as the marina clubhouse and discotheque. The Ryde remained as a nightclub until the late 1980s, but eventually closed down. Sadly, her condition has from then on gradually deteriorated (See the picture to the left).

39

Although there were some attempts to save her, the costs involved and several changes of ownership meant that they have all faltered. The P.S. Ryde is one of the most iconic paddle steamers and is held in great affection around the Island and beyond. Many people, including me and perhaps some of you, may remember dancing the night away on her back in the day. For many years, due to her condition, it has generally been assumed that she will just be scrapped. However, although nothing has yet been decided, she hasn’t been completely written off! Although, she will never be able to go to sea again, perhaps something might be able to be done to save her in some way after all. We will all just have to watch this space! ………………………………………………..
