Money Concepts for Kids E
$
arly in my financial planning career, a client asked me to speak to her children about basic money concepts. I thought this would be a snap. After all, talking about money is my job. The meeting, however, did not turn out as expected. The questions were so basic I didn’t have a ready response. It is one thing to talk about investing with an adult. It turned out to be another thing altogether to talk about money basics with a nine- and 11-year-old. I don’t know who learned the most that night, my client’s children or me. It’s tough raising children in today’s consumer-orientated society. How do parents educate their children about money when, at every turn, they see advertising designed to persuade them to acquire the next musthave thing? Good financial literacy is one of the most important life skills we can teach our kids. For good or bad, what and how we learn about money when we are young usually stays with us for the rest of our lives. This learning starts surprisingly early. Children as young as preschool age can learn basic concepts such as counting and working with coins. They are perceptive enough to understand that a plastic card at the checkout or ATM means “money.” Many children learn most of their financial behaviour from their parents. They are also quick to note their parent’s habits and attitudes. I learned my money skills from my parents who learned theirs from their parents and so on. Hopefully, the parents get it right because bad habits once made are hard to break. The first step in developing effective financial literacy in children usually begins with a monthly allowance. The common questions seem to be how much, when and
the relationship between an allowance and doing chores. There are many thoughts on these questions. A frequent approach is to give an allowance of one dollar a week for each year of age. As the child ages the dollar amount increases. This is, of course, dependent on the family’s financial situation and number of children. The key to an allowance is that you give it consistently. The parents and children also need to agree on the ground rules at the beginning. These rules also depend on the age of the child and their ability to comprehend basic concepts. Keep it simple early and gradually introduce ideas that are more complex. Another common rule is that a percentage must be saved each month for mutually agreed upon goals. Goals might be as simple as a new computer game to something more complex like education savings. This is also an excellent opportunity to introduce the excellent “pay yourself first” concept. In essence, by regularly saving 10 per cent of their allowance they will be on their way to mastering one of the fundamental concepts of successful financial planning. This is also a good time for children to make spending mistakes. The amounts are small, the consequences are minor and with any luck, they will learn from the experience. A frequent source of difference between experts, parents and, of course, children is the tying of an allowance to chores. Chores should be something that everyone in the family does freely. It is unlikely that dad will be punished financially if he does not do the dishes. If the child does not take the garbage out, however, they stand to have their allowance reduced as a “teaching” point. Children are quick to recognize a double standard and may decide that the
small reduction in their allowance is worth it to avoid the chore. An allowance is a tool to teach money skills, not ensure children complete their chores. A better approach would be offering to pay an extra amount for chores over and above the normal requirements. An example might be washing the car. What a great way to encourage initiative and motivation. When a child starts to receive an allowance, it is an opportune time to introduce the notion of a bank account. Most, if not all, Canadian financial institutions offer a children’s savings account. These accounts are usually no fee, pay interest and may offer debit card access. The rules and interest rates vary from institution to institution so you need to check around. They can deposit their 10 per cent and over time watch interest accrue, thereby introducing the idea of interest and earning a return. Again, a rule needs to be set on what constitutes a valid reason to withdraw funds from the account. Another learning occasion is introduced if the account offers debit card use. Canadians are the world’s largest users of debit cards, and learning the do’s and don’ts of their use is essential. Another great teaching opportunity is shopping with your kids. “Take my kids shopping! Are you crazy? It may sound crazy, but surprisingly, even though we all shop, a large number of Canadians do not have good shopping skills. Having your children help with grocery shopping will introduce important concepts such as meal planning, making a grocery list, looking for bargains and dealing with conflicting wants. Like handling money, effective shopping is a life skill that they will always use. As you move through the aisles, you can discuss price comparisons, expiry dates, healthy vs. unhealthy eating, and nutritional value. Take a calculator and compare items against each other to see how the grocery bill is affected. Children learn early and quickly. The ideal time to start them on the road to good financial literacy is as soon as they are able to understand basic concepts. An allowance is fundamental in setting them on the road to a happy financial future. Tie in a bank account and shopping and you will have done them a favour they will never forget. ife is fast. With children and families, we have to be just a tiny bit faster, to keep ahead of the inexorable steamroller of daily activities. Some weeks, Monday morning blends into Friday night, which offers a quick sip of air before the wild weekend engulfs us. This is what it is: when one is living the life that one has elected to live, and is surrounded by the people one loves, then all that can be done in the craziest times is to take a deep breath, hold hands, and plunge in together. However, something gets lost if we don’t allow ourselves to be in the moments that make up our lives. Sometimes, being translates directly into doing because that’s what is demanded. We need to remember the moments, and remember to allow ourselves, and our families, time to live fully in them, instead of diving right away into the next ones. These moments make up our lives and our memories. Take some time back with these easy, prepare-ahead recipe suggestions!

Cheese Tortellini Soup with Sausage & Kale 2 Tbsp vegetable oil 12 ounces kielbasa sausage, thinly sliced 1 onion, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup chopped celery 11⁄2 Tbsp fresh thyme (or 1–2 tsp dried) 1⁄ 2 tsp dried crushed red pepper flakes (optional) 10 cups vegetable or chicken stock 4 cups chopped fresh kale (can use spinach instead) 1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 350 gram package cheese-filled frozen tortellini 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese Heat large saucepan over medium heat. Add oil, then when that is heated, add sausage, onion, garlic, celery, thyme and pepper flakes. Sauté until vegetables are soft and sausage has browned (about 12 minutes). Add broth and bring to a boil. Stir in kale and beans, reduce heat to low and simmer until kale is wilted, about 4 minutes.
Brown Sugar Refrigerator Cookies 2 cups brown sugar (sounds like a lot, but consider that it’s part of a large batch. If desired, substitute 1 cup of the sugar with 1⁄2 cup honey) 1 cup butter 2 eggs, at room temperature 3 tsp vanilla 1 tsp baking soda 1⁄2 tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon 1 cup rolled oats 21⁄2 cups flour 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped (can use 1⁄2 cup chocolate chips instead) Cream sugar with butter till light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs (one at a time), beating well after each addition. Combine flour, soda and salt, then add to creamed mixture. Stir in rolled oats and nuts. Divide dough in half. Roll each half into a log about 2" in diameter; wrap in waxed paper. Refrigerate until firm (overnight). Preheat oven to 350˚F. Cut rolls into 1⁄4" thick slices, set 1" apart on ungreased baking sheets, and bake for 10–12 minutes, or until golden. (The logs can be frozen and pulled out to bake from frozen, for playdates, lunch snacks, or quick dessert!) Kathy Humphrey lives in Victoria with her husband and two children. She tries to see cooking for a family not as a chore but as a creative outlet.

Time to Learn Learning opportunities in the everyday
S
ixty-two per cent of Canadian parents say they don’t have as much time as they would like to spend helping their child learn, according to an Ispos Reid study on the learning habits of Canadian families. Despite the belief and desire to nurture a learning environment at home, with six in 10 Canadian parents indicating that the primary place for a child to learn is in the home, parents are overlooking inherent learning moments in their daily activities, with just three in 10 using daily tasks as key learning opportunities. “While it’s encouraging to see that three in 10 Canadian parents always use grocery shopping, traveling or participation in sport as a learning opportunity, there are still 70 per cent of parents who are missing out on embracing these moments,” says Margaret Eaton, president of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “It’s easy to use day-to-day tasks as a way to teach children. When traveling in the car, play word-association games with the letters on license plates, or when
Regionally, parents in Quebec and Atlantic Canada spend the most time writing stories with their children, with 22 per cent writing together daily or weekly. Parents in B.C. visit libraries the most, with 49 per cent going at least once a month. The majority of parents in Atlantic Canada, Saskatchewan and Manitoba visit the library less than once a month. When it comes to using a computer as a family, 34 per cent of Atlantic parents do it daily, but that number dips to 20 per cent in Alberta and just 14 per cent in Quebec. “Seventy per cent of Canadian parents agree that they are their child’s best teacher,” says Sean Simpson, associate vice president of Ipsos Reid. “This data shows us that there are many more opportunities they could use to be a non-conventional teacher to their kids.” With Family Literacy Day taking place in January, parents have the perfect opportunity to start embracing learning opportunities happening in their daily lives. Families can download the Journey to Learning Passport and see how easy and fun it is to share these moments and start learning together.
grocery shopping, try to add up the total before the cashier tells you. Learning can happen anywhere.” When it comes to paying bills, for example, over half of Canadian parents surveyed rarely (27 per cent) or never (28 per cent) use it as an opportunity to teach their children key financial literacy skills. Colours, matching and measurement can be taught while doing the laundry, yet only 19 per cent of parents use it as such. Looking at more traditional literacy activities, the study showed that: • Writing stories is an activity that is almost never done as a family, with 68 per cent of parents taking part in that activity less than once a month. • 81 per cent of parents visit a library less often than once a month or just once a month. • Digital literacy is still not fully embraced as a family activity, with only 22 per cent of parents using a computer daily with their children.

Unintentional Teaching A Grandfather’s Perspective
Y
ou can tell a lot about what parents are teaching their children by watching them during those moments when they don’t think they’re teaching the little darlings a darned thing. Take it from an old grandfather, no matter what advice you’ve read or heard, the ultimate key to parenting is to realize that your little ones are learning stuff at the most inconvenient times. Take for example the mother I saw at the grocery store last week. She had a toddler in her shopping cart and a little girl of about five years of age struggling to keep up as mom trundled along the grocery aisle. The little girl was talking a blue streak, pointing out items on the shelf and making suggestions for what they should buy. Even the toddler was trying to make her wishes known, pointing and shouting (more of a screech, really) and generally trying to engage. Mom was oblivious. She had a cell phone glued to her ear and was discussing what someone had said about someone else and
making statements like “OMG! Can you believe that?” I know this because mom seemed inclined to speak at a rather high volume. It was as though she was talking, not into a smart phone, but rather a tin can on a string. Now, I suspect that, had that mother received the same call while engaged in a business meeting or a luncheon with a friend she wouldn’t have ignored her company to take this call (at least I hope not). Still, she did it to her children. She might also have lowered her voice and kept the conversation somewhat personal. She didn’t when her children were her audience. And what did she teach them in the process? Well, I’m not sure but I would guess that the lessons included the position that children are not as important as an inane phone call from a friend, and that it’s OK to ignore others if you feel like it. I wonder if the mother in question will ever have occasion to berate
her children for not listening to something they’re being told because they’ve set their attention elsewhere. On the same visit to the grocer I saw a mom and dad with their son. I’m guessing that the boy was about 10 years old. They were in the housewares aisle when mom noticed that dad had, at some point, put a large plastic clamshell of sushi in the cart. “Oh honey, we don’t need this. It’s way too expensive!” said mom. Dad shrugged and took the very perishable item from the cart and placed it neatly on the shelf where he was standing. Unfortunately the shelf happened to be one assigned to laundry detergent and was definitely not refrigerated. His son watched the episode without saying a thing. Now, you might hope that the boy learned about being frugal when shopping and not buying things you don’t need. Maybe he did; but I suggest that he learned a few other things as well. For one, he learned that you don’t have to put things back where they belong, even if the item needs refrigeration. He learned that it was perfectly acceptable to drop items in a store wherever you might be standing and that consideration for whoever will have to pick up that item later isn’t important.

This was a teachable moment, folks. Dad could just as easily have taken junior with him to return the item to the refrigerated area where he’d picked it up. He could have explained the concept of being responsible and considerate. He didn’t. I hope he thinks about that the next time his son leaves the chocolate milk carton sitting on the family room coffee table. Incidentally, I’m not immune to making this kind of modeling mistake myself. I had my three-year-old granddaughter in the back of my vehicle a while back. We were caught in traffic and had been for a while. Suddenly, from the car seat in the back, my little princess expressed her frustration. “For crying out loud, folks! Get out of my way!” she cried. OK, the timbre of the voice was wrong, but the words were mine. I recognized the phrase and the frustration in the tone. I couldn’t remember saying the words with her in the car, but I must have done so at some point—and she remembered not only the words but the context and the emotion. Princess is three years old, remember. Sheesh. This whole concept was driven home yesterday when I made a call to a friend back east. He’s a man who, years ago, I’d met as part of a prison visitation program with which I was volunteering. He’s spent much of his adult life in and out of prison but he’s out now, working and living an honest and productive life. He has three little children under 11 years of age and an older daughter from a previous marriage. When I asked him about being a dad again, he got very serious. “I’m totally straight and responsible now,” he told me. “There’s no drinking and no drugs and no stuff that makes me ashamed to be their dad. I try to remember that everything I do with them teaches them something. I did a lot of that wrong before but I’m making up for it now. I just try to make most of the lessons good ones.” Soon after, he excused himself. His son had come in and asked his dad to throw a football. My friend decided that doing so was more important than our call. He was right. Maybe he could run a seminar for a couple of the folks in the grocery store.

Early development is child’s play! It’s obvious that play time is fun. What’s not so obvious is how important it is. Play time in a child’s first six years encourages creative, cognitive, language and motor development, and builds social and emotional skills, including self-confidence. In short, play time is an important step for healthy growth and development and is great preparation for school. A Garden for Grief
M
y first pregnancy was straightforward and I was blessed with a happy, healthy baby girl we named Lauren. When Lauren was around 18 months old, my husband and I started trying to conceive our second baby and had quick success. Although I knew the rates of miscarriage before 12 weeks gestation were high, I was too excited to keep the news to myself, so we told a number of family and friends our news. At around eight weeks I started spotting. Terrified, I rushed to the walk-in clinic and was told I was likely miscarrying, but there was no way to tell for sure and nothing they could do to stop it. All the doctor could say was, “Nature has to take its course”…words I still hear echoing to this very day. What happened over the next two days was graphic, physically painful and completely heart wrenching. Sadly, those two days were only the beginning of my grieving process. It continues today. Because we had told so many people about our pregnancy, we now had to tell everyone that I had suffered a miscarriage. Family and friends just don’t know how to react to the word “miscarriage” unless they have experienced it themselves. Miscarriage still carries a stigma with it—as if it’s something people shouldn’t talk about openly; as if I had done something wrong that caused me to miscarry. Yet, the more women I spoke to about my experience, the more I realized just how many others had gone through something similar. It was eye opening. I was not alone, far from it. Fifteen to 20 per cent of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage, according to statistics from Vancouver Island Women’s Clinic. In Victoria, it is conservatively estimated that there are at least 450 miscarriages each year. Deaths in the second half of a pregnancy are considered stillbirths. In 2010, Vital Statistics reported 457 stillbirths in B.C. At least 50 of those stillbirths occurred in Greater Victoria. To help support parents grieving the loss of a baby, the Little Spirits Garden at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria will be a dedicated place where parents and families can grieve the loss of a baby, and the community at large can remember, share, and openly acknowledge pregnancy and infant loss. This public memorial space—one of 32 www.IslandParent.ca
the first of its kind in North America—will be available to every family, regardless of financial circumstance, and no matter where or when they may have experienced the loss of a baby. The Board of Cemetery Trustees of Greater Victoria (a not-for-profit organization) has contributed $50,000 to developing the plan for the Little Spirits Garden and dedicated land within the Burial Park for the project. The board has partnered with the Saanich Legacy Foundation to raise the remaining $295,000 needed to complete the project. We are asking members of the community for their financial support to make the garden a reality. We also welcome corporate and foundation support; sponsorship benefits are available for those interested. For those wishing to make a donation “In Memoriam” of a baby lost, they may do so via the website www.saanichlegacy.ca. As thanks for your donation and in memory of the loss, a cedar remembrance flag with a personalized message will be hung in the garden when it is completed. The garden, located in a wooded grove at one of the highest points of land in the Burial Park, will include 3,000 small cement “Spirit Houses” which families can decorate, fill with mementos or personalize. There will also be benches that can be dedicated with bronze plaques, a ceremonial pavilion memorial installation, and an ossuary and communal garden for scattering ashes. As we’ve begun to raise awareness about the project, I have heard stories of loss from across the country. Stories of one miscarriage (as in my case). Stories of miscarriage after miscarriage after miscarriage. Stories of stillbirths and infant loss shortly after birth. Each story is different in circumstance and grief. Each story is equally heartbreaking. Moms who never saw the face of their baby, but still had hopes and dreams for that child. Moms who held their baby as it took both its first and last breath in the space of just a few minutes. Parents who created a birth and death certificate for their child on the same day. Not only is this loss traumatic at the time it occurs, but the pain lingers for years to come. As Jill Davoren, Maternity Services social worker at Victoria General Hospital says, “It does not matter if parents lost their
baby 50 years or five hours ago, the grief of the loss of a baby before birth is often lifelong, raw, and ever present, lying just below the surface of the parent’s heartbeat.” All this loss, yet there is currently no support group, no place to mourn, no place to

seek comfort. Yes, Little Spirits Garden is a physical place, a garden. But to someone who has felt so alone, so lost, it is so much more than just a garden. It is a peaceful place created for the sole purpose of remembering your own little spirit. I will be able to stand in the middle of the garden and look up at all the cedar flags, hung in memory of other infants lost and know that there are others who share my sadness. There are others who have stood where I stand. Little Spirits Garden can be the place where families connect, a place where there is no stigma to the words “miscarriage,” “still birth” and “infant mortality”—a place where families mourn in peace, where families can give their little spirit a home to rest for all time. o think about getting a divorce because love has died is like selling your car because it’s about to run out of gas. As a marriage counselor, I witness firsthand the courage of those people who are committed to taking what are often painful steps towards saving their marriage. Conversely, I also see those who have already checked out and want to be able to say, “Yeah, I went to counseling, but it didn’t work.” So why do so many marriages run out of gas? Consider the following analogy. Next week I will take my car in for its regular maintenance and a minor repair based on an indicator light that recently appeared. The car is six years old. I expect I will spend around four to five hundred dollars. This is what responsible people do, right? We take care of our things. We want to make sure that everything is operating properly and that our car has been well maintained. We even keep all the records so we know exactly what needs to looked after next. To be forthright, your marriage will break down if you don’t invest in regular maintenance! Pay attention to your relationship’s indicator lights. Get better at reading the right signs. Here’s a key question: Why don’t people invest in their most valued relationship? Why do so many people fail to realize that marriages need maintenance, too? An easy answer would be that few of us had the luxury of having been raised by extraordinary role models who provided consistent examples of loving, supportive, respectful relationships. As a result, many of us muddle along foolishly expecting success to happen because we married for love, and then when it derails, we’re hurt and bewildered. Don’t despair. Marriages have service centers, too. You! You’re the gas. Yes, it takes work, commitment, perseverance, and love, but you can salvage your marriage because you already have the basic skill that is required. In fact, you acquired this skill at
an early age and you use it daily. It’s called communication. It’s important to have a sense of where the minefields are when you communicate with your partner and then know how to navigate through your marriage with clarity, purpose, satisfaction and joy. Dr. John Gottman’s “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” provide a helpful approach to improving communication between partners. The first horseman is Criticism. Please don’t confuse criticism with complaining because they are two very different beasts. While a complaint focuses on a specific behaviour, “I’m disappointed you didn’t tell me earlier that you were too tired to make love,” criticism attacks a person’s character. What could have been a request for a behaviour change now becomes a full condemnation: “Why are you always so nasty? Whenever I want to make love, you always say you’re too tired. You are so selfish!” See the difference? The reality is that criticism is very common in relationships and, regrettably, it almost always leads to the second horseman: Contempt. Have you been the recipient of sarcasm, cynicism, name-calling, eye rolling, sneering, mockery, and hostile humour? If so, then you know first-hand what contempt feels like; and, since it communicates disgust from your partner, contempt is the worst of the four horsemen because it has only one outcome: it escalates conflict. Now the third horseman thunders in; this one is called Defensive. Being human, it’s natural to become aggressive when you are being criticized, it’s natural to want to shift the blame to the partner who is conducting the criticism, and it’s natural to take the stance that “You’re the problem, not me,” but you are both in this marriage and you both need to work on avoiding these spiteful outcomes. When the first three Horsemen are used in a conversation—first criticism, then contempt, followed by defensiveness—one partner will respond by tuning out the other,
and that invites, you guessed it, the fourth horseman: Stonewalling. Stonewalling is a natural defense against the feeling of being flooded by a partner’s negativity. In response to the criticism, contempt and defensiveness that has escalated the conversation to a dangerous level, the stonewaller’s reaction is to withhold any signs of responsiveness, kind of like being in a state of shell-shock. Physiological changes such as increased heart rate, the secretion of adrenalin, and an increase in blood pressure also occur, which significantly decrease the ability to process information. When a problem-solving discussion leads to one or both partners becoming stonewalled, the conversation is doomed to fail. Creative problem solving has left the relationship—but only temporarily! Don’t lose heart. Now that you know to pay attention to the indicator lights, you can deconstruct this debilitating process by extracting your secret weapon: Regular Repair and Maintenance. You start this maintenance by fine-tuning your channel of communication. If you have a complaint, don’t let it escalate into a criticism of your partner’s character. When you’re making your point, be immediate and specific—and respectful. Become conscious about how you sound, model the behaviour of “active listening,” validate your partner’s perspective, tell your partner their feelings are legitimate even if you don’t identify with what they are feeling, shift to something you can easily appreciate about your partner, and finally, claim responsibility by saying to yourself, “What can I learn from this? What can I do about it?” Marriages fall apart for a wide variety of reasons, but recognizing the warning signs in your dialogues with your partner is the first step towards ensuring your relationship remains intact. Maybe right now you are feeling stuck, but don’t give up. Responding appropriately to the “indicator lights” that warn of the approach of the Four Horsemen provides you with the opportunity to give the appropriate level of maintenance to this most cherished relationship. Use your new and improved communication skills to stay tuned in to each other and to keep your marriage tank full. Daniel M. Hughes is a family psychotherapist based in Victoria. ost people know that breastmilk protects babies and children against infection and illness. It’s the only food needed for the first six months of a baby’s life. Breastmilk is recommended until two years and beyond and offers endless health benefits to babies, children and mothers. If a mother is not able to fully breastfeed, even small amounts of breastmilk have value for her baby. But did you know that breastfeeding also helps our planet to be healthy? This is just one of many breastfeeding topics you can read about on the BC Baby-Friendly Network website at www. bcbabyfriendly.ca. The website has good upto-date links to other websites and articles. These give information that can support breastfeeding mothers and help all of us learn about new breastfeeding research. Breastfeeding help is also available free of charge from public health nurses at your local health unit (see health unit contact information on this page). If you have questions or need help as you plan for and breastfeed your baby, please call. Meanwhile, check out some new breastfeeding online resources from the BC BabyFriendly Network website: Why Breastfeed? The Case for Breastfeeding (www.breastfeedingmadesimple.com/ whybf.html). A collection of articles by Nancy Mohrbacher. Breastfeeding has gotten some bad press in the past couple of years. If you are struggling with breastfeeding—or just feeling discouraged—you may wonder why you should continue. Are the effects of breastfeeding trivial? Or is it something that can have lifetime health effects? In fact, the health benefits of breastfeeding are welldocumented and quite powerful. In short, it’s very much worth your time and effort. “Hands-on pumping” (www.bcbabyfriendly.ca/handsonpumping.pdf and newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/ MaxProduction.html). Playtime With Baby Learning and growing in the first year
A
s a parent, you are your baby’s first playmate. Play is a fun way for the two of you to bond and it encourages healthy child development. Play is how children learn—about themselves, other people, and the world around them. Play helps to build confidence, relationships, and basic skills. Toys for babies don’t need to be expensive. They can be things you have around the house, as long as they are unbreakable, safe (no loose parts, broken pieces or sharp edges), and the right size (anything that can fit through a paper towel roll is too small). Good toys are washable, made to last and appeal to parents, too. After all, you’ll both be playing with them!
Here are some suggestions: Use rhymes, games and songs as you go through the routines of your day. You can make up a diaper-changing tune, or try a little rhyme as you’re putting shoes on. Play with books. Read to your baby every day, and remember that babies also want to play with books. They like to put books in their mouth and try to turn pages, so provide clean and sturdy board books. Encourage babble. It’s how babies learn to make different sounds using their own voice. Repeat these sounds, and turn them into real words. As you do this, you can make up all sorts of language games that are sure to delight your baby.
Words and music: Instant playtime
Your newborn baby is developing hand-eye coordination. Reaching for and touching things, and learning how to hold them provide wonderful stimulation. Good playthings for this age include: Cloths or transparent scarves that can be
For the first year of your baby’s life, play won’t involve toys much at all. Reading, speaking, and singing are fun and easy (and portable) ways to play with your baby. And they are rich learning experiences.
From birth to 3 months
used for peek-a-boo An unbreakable mirror placed so that baby can see himself Fabric “bracelets” (soft rattles that can attach to your baby’s wrists) A set of plastic measuring spoons Pieces of brightly coloured cloth with different textures Wooden or plastic bracelets that don’t have loose parts Anything with a face on it—dolls, pictures, stuffed animals
From 3 to 6 months At this age, your baby is developing both fine motor (using hands and fingers) and gross motor (moving arms and legs) skills. She’s fascinated with her own hands, and starting to connect how arm and hand movements feel with her desire to make them happen. Toys that can help support your baby’s development include: Sturdy rattles Peek-a-boo scarves Doughnut-shaped objects made from plastic or fabric, large enough to grasp Pieces of brightly coloured and textured fabric (terry cloth, silk, fake fur) A play arch where baby can lie on his back and bat or kick at toys hanging above

Toys that make interesting sounds (rattles, shakers, chimes) are better than toys that make electronic sounds. Just be sure they are not too loud for baby’s sensitive ears.
From 6 to 12 months In the second half of the first year, your baby sees anything within reach as a potential toy. And if he can reach it, he’ll probably put it in his mouth. He wants to know how things work, and what they do when they’re dropped, rolled, shaken, banged or thrown. Toys that are safe for and appealing to babies this age include: Stacking and nesting toys: A set of nesting cups and some sturdy blocks are a great investment. They’ll provide hours of playtime well beyond your baby’s first year. Cups, little pails and other unbreakable containers Large building blocks Board books Any ball, as long as it is too big to fit in a baby’s mouth. Avoid balls with a plug/ pin that could be a choking hazard if it comes out. Shape sorters Trucks, cars Riding toys designed for babies this age Soft toys small enough to handle Percussion instruments: shakers, a small drum, or a “rain maker.” You can also make these from containers and fillers you have at home (for instance, put lentils or dry beans in a water bottle and secure the top tightly closed with some tape). Toys that encourage “visual tracking” (following a moving object with your eyes), like a ball ramp, or a push-and-go rolling toy. Safety tip: Always check the label to make sure the toy is right for your baby’s age.
Active play Active play really does start from birth. Very young babies need “tummy time” each day (while they are awake) to help strengthen the muscles in their neck and upper body. As you encourage your 6-month-old to reach for objects or try new things, you’re encouraging active play. When he starts to crawl, he’ll need lots of supervised floor time to explore. Finally, make sure your baby doesn’t spend long periods of time in a seat, high chair or stroller. Avoid TV and other electronic media. Reprinted with permission from the Canadian Paediatric Society. Learning from Each Other
How different personalities navigate newness Families are a dynamic mix of different personalities. This can be exciting. But now and then it takes a little digging to figure out exactly what makes the people you love tick. It takes work to make it work. And while a psychology degree might come in handy, sometimes all it takes is a closer look at the people we call family. For example, my family of four breaks down into two broad categories of extroverts and introverts. We have two of each. Turns out, this makes a big difference in how we make our way in the world, and in how we learn to navigate new places and ideas. To be honest, it’s taken me a while to appreciate our differences. As an extrovert, I used to get frustrated when my children or hubby didn’t dive into the deep end of conversation with people we’d just met, or risk taking a new route without googling the details, or answer a question until they’d had a chance “to think about it.” As an extrovert, I’m used to jumping to conclusions, befriending strangers, and getting lost and calling it an adventure. But I am one of four in the mix. So, I soon discovered the beauty of the introvert, and (surprise!) not all extroverts are created equal. Being part of a family sure teaches you a lot of things. Like how other people learn. As an extrovert, I love to engage the world by asking people I meet all sorts of questions. I’d far rather talk to someone than read a pamphlet or find a website. Talk to me and I learn. Better still, let me talk and I’ll be an expert in a matter of minutes! This served me well working as a community newspaper reporter. Then I became a mom and tried to teach my kids to just ask lots of questions if they wanted to know something, anything really. My children tagged along, but they never really engaged strangers the way I did. They had their reasons. My son, for example, is not an extrovert who likes to engage people in question-andanswer sessions. He’s one of two introverts of the family. He likes to learn through intro-
spection. He’ll observe from a distance, assess quietly and come to his own conclusions. His approach is a mystery to me, but I always enjoy hearing his thoughts later in the day. He is insightful in a way I deeply appreciate. My daughter, on the other hand, is happy to talk to people, but does not initiate conversation like I do. She waits for a good time to join in the conversation and usually needs an invitation to share her delightful thoughts. She never asks too many questions. She makes people comfortable. While extroverted, in the sense of learning via relationship, her approach is to experiment and join in the task at hand. Once shown how to do something, she loves to use her hands. She learns by doing, not watching or talking. She is our experiential extrovert, and I love the way she creates relationship simply by coming alongside someone and doing whatever they’re doing. I never do that. My husband, rounding us out, doesn’t like to engage people with questions, or indulge in introspective analysis, or experiment with his hands. He likes to investigate. He’s our introverted research guru. Nine times out of 10 he’ll do his own research on anything new—a new place, a new idea, a new program. Before venturing out somewhere new, he likes to have his bases covered, and makes an effort to cover all of ours while he’s at it. This works. It allows me to talk along the way, my son to watch the world go by, and my daughter to get her hands dirty when the opportunity arises. So it’s a nice mix. We have an extrovert who engages, an introspective introvert, an extrovert who likes to experiment herself, and an investigative introvert. Somehow it all works out. As a family, we’re so glad— although we show it in different ways! Dayna E. Mazzuca is working as a writer, creative workshop leader and home schooling mom in Victoria. Her family is always teaching her something new. Most days she loves it all!

Fantastic Four O
ne of the most challenging, exciting aspects of a bookish lifestyle is unquestionably the quest for the next great read. Depending on one’s level of dedication, it’s a matter of spending hours or days sorting through dozens of new books to find the handful that will make you think, or laugh, or look at the world anew. This year has been absolutely exceptional, with an abundance of gems for all ages. I’ve done my best to find the best and brightest, and below you’ll find four titles for a variety of ages that are outstanding. For the youngest among us (well, 2+) and their accompanying adults, I offer you what every parent longs for: Five Minutes’ Peace (Putnam Juvenile, 2012). All Mrs. Large wants is a little time to herself, away from her three well-intentioned but rambunctious children. After vain attempts to achieve this, and the frightening sight of her elephant offspring eating breakfast, Mrs. Large takes refuge in the bathroom with a hot bubble bath, safe in the certainty that here, at last, she is alone. Alas, as anyone with children knows, five minutes peace is much easier asked for than found. Murphy’s bright, engaging illustrations, wittily authentic text, and delightful characters make this a perfect book for any parent. Next up is a superlative new book from an established and much-lauded author: the masterful Mr. Ian Falconer, creator of the dynamic, eccentric, Olivia the pig. Olivia and the Fairy Princesses (Simon and Schuster, 2012) finds thoughtful, artistic Olivia weary, ill at ease, and considering the possibility that she may be having “an identity crisis.” Olivia is sick to death of pink, glittering princesses with frilly dresses and sparkly wands; she longs for diversity, for difference, for strength. Olivia is not one for standing passively by while someone—be it a knight in shining armour or a girl in a bright pink tutu—gets all the action. Redolent with Falconer’s trademark tongue-in-cheek humour and hilarious modern art references (including a spectacular, Martha-Grahamesque performance from everyone’s favourite piglet), this is an Olivia book not only for a new generation of children (4+), but for all those who have known and loved her since her first arrival 10 years ago. Rarely do I come across a picture book that makes me laugh
56

or cheer out loud—Olivia does both. Read it. Third on my list features another return appearance from a fantastic protagonist; the marvellous, inspired character of Primrose Squarp, hero of Polly Horvath’s award-winning read, Everything on a Waffle. One Year in Coal Harbour (Groundwood Books, 2012) carries on where Waffle left off, chronicling Primrose’s further adventures. Of course, nothing in Coal Harbour is ever quite as it should be, and Primrose has her hands full with a not-quite-blossoming romance between cynical, enigmatic Ms. Bowzer, proprietor of the Girl on the Red Swing restaurant, and Primrose’s uncle Jack, real estate developer and decided bachelor; the possible development of a nearby mountain; and the cultivation of a best friend in Ked, a foster child whose residency in Coal Harbour is growing more tenuous by the day. Filled with warmth, wit, philosophy, and a fresh batch of recipes and characters, Horvath’s newest tale will delight fans and neophytes alike. 11+ Last, but certainly not least, a scrumptiously eerie read for those who like to feel their spines tingling. The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls (Simon and Schuster, 2012) by Claire Legrand, darkly, starkly illustrated by Sarah Watts, is funny and frightening by turns, and replete with a cast of duplicitous adults, maligned, misused, and potentially rebellious children, and a heroine of daring, fortitude, and exceptional organizational abilities. Victoria likes to have everything just so, from her exams to her best (read: only) friend Lawrence. Then Lawrence disappears and suddenly, Victoria’s safe tidy life is anything but, as she sets out to rescue Lawrence, uncovers dark secrets lurking in her orderly town, and learns that perfection can come at a terrible cost. Reminiscent of Roald Dahl or Edward Gorey at their best, Legrand’s debut novel is a delightfully chilling choice for 12+. This has been a year of incredible books; let this too be the year you challenge yourself: to go beyond the ordinary, outside the conventional, and embrace the extraordinary—you never know where it’ll take you. Maddy Smith is a children’s bookseller and an Islander born and bred; she reads, writes, and believes in the magic of a great book.

Starting Baby on Solids
I
s it time for your baby to venture into the world of solid food? Breast milk is the only food necessary for your little one until they show signs of needing solid food, around the middle of the first year of life. La Leche League International recommends letting baby lead the way when it comes to weaning and starting solids, saying that “ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until baby outgrows the need.” Allowing your baby to lead the way promotes independence in eating, and helps your child to develop a healthy relationship with food. Your job as parent in terms of food and nutrition from the moment your baby starts eating solid food until they reach a level of independence (years later) is to offer a variety of healthy options in safe shapes, sizes, portions and textures. Your child’s job is to be in charge of how much they eat. Early on, your baby can experience the taste of whole foods through a self-led approach which will set the pace of how much they want to eat.
Watch for signs that baby is ready. Taking cues from your baby on when he wants to eat solid foods is an extension of breastfeeding on demand. While sitting on your lap at the dinner table, you may notice that your little one may take your hand and redirect your fork to his open mouth. It doesn’t get more obvious than that! Other signs to notice are: • intently watching others eat • making little noises and sucking motions with mouth • drooling
Developmental milestones and foods to offer: Keep in mind that no two babies are alike, and they will not all meet developmental milestones at the same time. It is helpful to be aware of the importance of these milestones so you can be prepared to follow your baby’s cues as to when they are ready to start solids. At six months, baby has good lip control, can extend and retract her tongue, and may reach for your spoon. She may be interested in some very soft foods at this point. When
food is placed on her lower lip, she will likely draw it inward. She may even move her tongue horizontally to get at food in the side of her mouth. Foods to try from six months: soft, smooth table foods such as banana, avocado, single grain, iron-fortified infant cereal (no mixed textures yet). At eight months, she can use her upper lip to remove food from a spoon. She is able to eat soft whole foods and mashed up table food. Her hand-to-mouth coordination is improving and she may have developed a better grip so she can finger feed. Try peeled, grated apple, pear, brown rice, mashed beans, and soft cooked mashed veggies. Iron-rich foods are important for baby, so be sure to include well-cooked shredded or slivered pieces of chicken, ground lamb or beef. At nine months, she can chew up and down and on a diagonal. Foods to try: hard foods that dissolve (for example, graham crackers, frozen fruit pieces), soft cubes (soft cooked squash, steamed apple chunks, yams), soft chewable food with a single texture (very thin slices of meat, pasta, rice, oat ring cereal), fully cooked, well-minced meat, poultry, fish, mashed tofu, legumes. At 12 months, your baby can drink from a cup. Her jaw can move up and down and her lips may be open during swallowing. She can bite with whatever teeth she may have, and can now manage ground, mashed or chopped food with noticeable lumps. She will choke or cough if she tries to swallow too much or eats too fast. Foods to try: soft chewable foods with mixed textures (for example, moist fully-cooked chicken pieces and veggies, macaroni and cheese, homemade baked sweet potato “fries,” spaghetti with meat sauce).
Foods associated with allergy, rash and food sensitivity: Berries containing small, hard seeds (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries), citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit), corn products, cow milk and dairy products (may be the most common of allergens), egg whites (yolks generally are okay), kiwi fruit, peanuts and peanut butter, shellfish.
Choking risks—not suitable for babies and toddlers: Hotdogs (even small slices), nuts, popcorn, raw carrots and other similar hard foods, whole grapes, marshmallows and candies.
Other problem foods to avoid: Dried fruits and fruit bars are too sticky to deal with easily and they also stick to teeth which may lead to tooth decay Foods high in saturated fat such as fried foods are hard to digest and unhealthy Foods high in salt. Read labels closely since there are no regulations on how much sodium is allowed in even “baby friendly” foods Foods that contain added sugar or artificial sweeteners Honey or corn syrup may contain botulism spores which can make babies very sick Juice should be limited to ¼ to ½ cup per day. If you do offer juice, only offer 100 per cent unsweetened juice, but the best option is to eliminate juice completely Even if your little one hasn’t started eating solid foods yet, it is not too early to think about how to raise a healthy eater who will make wise choices into adulthood. You can pave the way by making the very best choices for yourself and keeping your kitchen stocked with good food. At the grocery store, focus on buying foods from the perimeter of the store which is better stocked with whole foods. The food that is packaged and processed is located in the middle aisles. Embracing a “whole foods for the whole family” way of eating will clear the pathway for your child. Get in the habit of eating together every evening as a way of creating a healthy family food culture. You’ll have time to ease into this new phase, as it could be well after their first birthday before your baby starts to favour solids over your milk. When the time comes, get out those bibs, strip down your baby, set down a tarp underneath the highchair if you have to and have a camera ready to capture those first gummy, banana-smeared smiles. As daunting and messy as it may seem, starting your little one on solids is a very short period of time in your child’s life. While your baby is discovering new tastes and textures, remember to enjoy this milestone! This Too Shall Pass Words of wisdom from The Experienced Ones “Gentle, gentle, shhhh.” That was my grandmother, to me, as I was trying to soothe my cranky newborn by hopping around the kitchen to Arcade Fire. I had just read The Happiest Baby on the Block and was following Dr. Karp’s advice about being vigorous when bouncing your fussy baby. I think I had taken it a step too far and was whipping my child into an orchestral frenzy rather than lulling him into a tranquil slumber. “Don’t ever say, ‘My child will never do that.’” That was from a wise colleague. I’ve been slow to catch on to that one, too, as I’ve had to eat my words more that once. I’m not above hiding the Sesame Street DVDs because so-and-so is coming over, and when I was pregnant I was all, “TV
FOR CHILDREN IS EVIL!” in front of her. Dumb dumb dumb. “Maybe you should stop reading parenting books.” This from my mother. And my husband. I am pretty sure I’ve read, oh, EVERY PARENTING BOOK EVER PUBLISHED. Almost. Of course, some of them were extremely helpful and interesting but a large number of them either a) confused me (see previous item in list), b) patronized me, c) made me feel like a failure, or d) convinced me that my child was delayed in some area. I admit that while I have reduced my parenting book consumption, I am still guilty as charged. But I’m working on it. “If you ever feel like you’re not a good parent ask yourself: would you want you as a parent?”

I heard this once, not in those exact words, and I can’t remember where. But that’s the gist of it, and I love it. I have had many a moment when I put my head in my hands and tearily declared myself the Worst Parent Ever. Usually it’s for something stupid, like pinching a little chin flesh with a zipper or having a fleeting wish for kindergarten to begin, oh, tomorrow. I find that if I stop and ask myself that question, the answer is (almost) always YES. And that helps. “This too shall pass.” Almost every friend/family member who was a mother before me told me this at one point, and more than once. It’s because it’s the mantra of parents everywhere. If you are a new parent, and you haven’t heard it yet, start chanting it NOW. Think you’ll never sleep again? This too shall pass. Two year molars gettin’ ya down? This too shall pass. Kiddo obsessed with Barney? This too shall pass. Teen queen breaking into your liquor cabinet? Again? This too shall pass. This too shall pass. This too shall pass. (Hopefully.) Carly Sutherland can say from personal experience that she no longer has a crush on Jesus (Grade 4), shuns vegetables (ages 2-9), or wears combat boots with every outfit (grade 10). So yes, most things do pass.

Feast of the Salmon
E
veryone has gathered for the annual banquet of salmon. No invitations were sent out, no RSVPs were required, it was “come as you are” with bears, ravens, bald eagles, gulls, kingfishers, dippers, ducks, river otters, raccoons, and a myriad of unseen bacteria—to name a few—on the guest list. The table has been set, and the menu is mouth-watering if you like dining on Pacific salmon. We mustn’t forget the humans; they too gather in great numbers to witness the spectacle of spawning salmon. During the months of October and November, in B.C.’s creeks and rivers, Pacific salmon, Oncorhynchus, complete their cycle with an awe-inspiring ritual of life, death and rebirth. The waters are turbulent as thousands of salmon, driven by instinct to their natal streams, come to spawn and die. But this is neither the beginning nor the end of the story. The feast is sublime and all the guests leave for warmer climes, hibernation or a more readily available food source. Little trace of the spawning display remains to be seen. Under the rocks and stones, however, the salmon eggs are slowly developing into alevin,
larval salmon with a yolk sac providing all the nutrients they need. In a few months the tiny juvenile fry are ready to begin their adventures swimming through the creeks dodging herons, rainbow trout and other voracious predators. They either remain in the freshwater streams for a year or move to the deeper waters of the estuaries, undergoing the transformation from fresh to saltwater existence, and finally they make their way into the great ocean for four or five years until they, too, are mysteriously called to the creeks of their birth to complete their lives. It is a perfect cycle that beckons to all of us to be amazed at this spectacle of the natural world for the annual salmon run. You will be amazed! Dinner is served for many and no one goes hungry. Various organizations, from local conservation groups to government agencies, have enhanced spawning habitat in concerted efforts to steward this precious natural resource. CRD Regional Parks and the British Columbia Conservation Foundation are undertaking a project to increase water flow releases from Thetis Lake Regional Park into Craigflower
Creek to improve summer coho and cutthroat salmon habitat. Whether you’re a local resident or just visiting the area, plan an excursion to view this spectacle. Sooke Potholes Regional Park and

Goldstream Provincial Park offer excellent wildlife viewing. There is also an adults-only guided hike at Sooke Potholes being led by a CRD Regional Parks naturalist on October 14. Check the website for details: www.crd. bc.ca/parks. Nancie Dohan is Coordinator of Environmental Interpretation with CRD Regional Parks.
