Welcome to the
Family Summer Guide 2018 L iving on Vancouver Island, with limitless possibilities for summer fun, it’s tempting to pack into one day what you might normally fit into a month. While we’re not suggesting you give into that temptation—summer is, after all, a time to slow down and catch our breath—there’s a reason the days are longer this time of year! As summer stretches out before us, it’s a good time to custom-design your family’s summer bucket list. Travels near? Far? A first camping trip? With Vancouver Island as the backdrop, take time to enjoy the scenery and warm weather with your family. Scale a peak in one of the Island’s provincial parks, float on
an inner tube down an Island river, or sleep under the stars in your backyard. Visit a water park. Learn to kayak. Or canoe. Hear live music at one of the many Island summer festivals. Dive into an ice cream sundae. Challenge someone to a watermelon seed-spitting contest. Stage a water fight. Decorate your bikes and host a neighbourhood bike parade. Sleep in. Stay up late. No matter what you have planned this summer—or what just happens—we hope this year’s Family Summer Guide helps you

Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park in Metchosin. More than 5 kms of beautiful trails run through woodland, past lagoon and marsh. Watch for birds as you meander down to the sandy beach. The warm water means you can actually swim in the ocean (that’s rare around here). Add a low tide and this beach becomes a paradise for skim boarders, beachcombers and swimmers alike. The Nature House at the trailhead has some great hands-on displays. Approximately 40 minutes from downtown Victoria, on Metchosin Road. crd.bc.ca/ parks. Roche Cove Regional Park in East Sooke. Cedar
Hemer Provincial Park is located on Holden Lake southeast of Nanaimo. There is a network of shady forested trails, including a main trail running alongside the lake, and a bird viewing platform overlooking
a marsh, approximately 1 km from the parking lot. You may see various types of ducks, Trumpeter swans, Bald eagles, turkey vultures and beavers. From Cedar Road follow the signs to the park entrance. Cable Bay Trail leads down through the cool forest to the ocean. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the mossy rocks, and watch for sea lions. The beach itself is sandstone and is under water when the tide is in. Two kms of well-maintained trail is fairly steep on the way back up, so make sure young hikers don’t use up all their energy at the shore. Off Holden Corso Road (which becomes Barnes Road); watch for the sign. This is a popular trail for dog walkers, but it doesn’t tend to be crowded.
Nanaimo
Buttertubs Marsh Bird Sanctuary encompasses 49 acres of natural wetlands and grasslands. The 3.3-km loop of wide trail is level and perfect for strollers. You’ll make your way around a body of water buzzing with bird activity. Some ruins in the area, as well as the giant bleached remains of long-dead deciduous trees standing in the water give the marsh a wonderful ambience. No dogs allowed. 1780 Jingle Pot Road.

Endless Possibilities in Gulf Island Parks
A
s Islanders, we’re lucky to find soaring mountains, vast oceans, and serene landscapes in our own backyard. Yet it isn’t always easy to appreciate these special places for all they are, especially when it’s important to get the kids involved and stick to a budget. Fortunately, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is looking out for you. The following free weekly programs and special events are the perfect activities for your next escape. You won’t have to travel far, spend much, or plan elaborate activities. Hop aboard BC ferries and you’ll be swept away by natural beauty, vivid culture, and friendly Parks Canada staff.
will be serving free ice cream, and the Heritage Committee will be giving tours of the landmark fog alarm building.
Pender Island
Families of night owls shouldn’t miss “Nuit Blanche” (August 10 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.) at Roesland, where bats, bioluminescence, and stargazing will light up the senses. Meet guest experts who will help track glowing creatures, spot distant galaxies, and identify different bat species based on live recordings of their sounds. Book your campsite now at one of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve’s three campgrounds on Pender Island. If stepping back in time is more your speed, visit 110-year-old Roesland’s Pender Islands Museum. Visit with volunteer museum hosts or enjoy a picnic, the scenery, and some R&R on the porch. Whichever adventure suits your family best, take a cue from your young ones and embrace a little childlike wonder.
Vancouver Island
Saturna Island
If you’re hoping to spend the night, be it in a tent or a B&B, find your way to Saturna Island. Head to East Point on Friday for a truly special sunset experience. From 8 p.m., you’ll spend the evening under the spell of island musicians and storytellers, discovering the wildlife of the Salish Sea with a Parks Canada interpreter. The night sky’s vista at East Point will make for a spectacular moment and a lasting memory. Be sure to dress warmly and bring along blankets, chairs, and flashlights for ultimate coziness. On Sundays, grab your curiosity cap and a picnic lunch and drop in to Saturna’s Winter Cove between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The whole family will find clues along the trail to help solve the mystery and discover animals of the Park Reserve.
18 Family Summer Guide

Visit Ancient Egypt… in Victoria
T
he Royal BC Museum’s feature exhibition Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs is perfect for family fun on hot summer days when you need to beat the heat or on rainy ones when you need to keep your kids occupied indoors. Families will enjoy this interactive exhibition with lots to touch, play with and learn. Older kids in particular will enjoy checking out scale-model replicas of famous pyramid complexes, playing games and experiencing cutting-edge multimedia. Five things kids won’t want to miss when they come visit. 1. Their Own Entrance. The exhibition begins with a special entrance designed just for kids. Little ones can enter the pyramid and look through a peek-a-boo window at mummified animals. Adults, after they’ve come their own entrance, can see through a window on the inside of the exhibition space. 2. Animals. The first section of the exhibition features the Nile River with animated line drawings illustrating the different seasons. The displays are low enough that kids can easily see the variety of animals shown in the original ancient artifacts, including a hedgehog, lizard, hippopotamus, crocodile, frog, falcon and more. Don’t miss the large bronze cat from the late period (6th to 3rd century BC). Like us, ancient Egyptians had cats in their houses; they were valued for protecting grains from mice and rats, and seen as gentle and peaceful creatures. 3. Models. There are large-scale models of the Great and Small Temple of Aten positioned low so kids can get a good look at the whole layout. Follow the daily rituals of the temple by pressing a button to see how the ceremony played out. A 3-D printed replica of the famous Queen Nefertiti sculpture sits next to a model of the artist Thutmose’s workshop, where the bust was found in 1912. Choose your own adventure by selecting the story of the artist Thutmose, a labourer, or the steward’s wife. 4. Hieroglyphics. Can you crack the code? Museum volunteers are running a hands-on activity in the gallery asking visitors to try to figure out what message the hieroglyphics are communicating. Hieroglyphics can be pictures of living creatures, objects used in daily life or symbols. Some are easy to identify and others can be challenging. There’s something for all levels. Kids can also learn how to write hieroglyphics at a media station. They are shown how to form the shapes on a touchpad. 5. Enter the Realm of the Afterlife. Family members can find out if their heart is light as a feather, a requirement to enter the afterlife, by answering a series of tough double negative questions. This digital test mimics the Book of the Dead displayed in the same area. The museum’s Egypt-themed kids summer camps may be sold out, but did you know there is a day camp for adults? After you drop your kids off at their camps, pop over to the museum to re-awaken your inner child and explore ideas in the Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs. Get behind-the-scenes access to the exhibition and the experts who work at the museum. Camps take place on July 20 and 27, August 17 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each one is $50. Or combine a day camp with the Night at the Museum—Adults Only Sleepover for $115. Bring the whole family to the Night at the Museum sleepover in the Egypt exhibition in November. Join the three days of free outdoor events in celebration of Canada Day (June 29, 30 and July 1). Learn about the diverse communities in B.C. through music and dance on the main stage. And on Canada Day participate in the annual Penny Carnival and try your hand at some games.

ever mind the scientific studies that show how interacting with animals can elevate a person’s levels of serotonin and dopamine, which can act as a natural relaxant. Or that the companionship of an animal can offer comfort, help ease anxiety, and build self-confidence in children. Most of us already know—on an intuitive level, at least—that interacting with animals is somehow good for our health. Thankfully, Vancouver Island is loaded with options for introducing kids to furry, woolly, feathered, potbellied or even six- or eight-legged friends. Protecting What We Love
P
aradise is defined as a place of extreme beauty, delight, or happiness. Its alternate definition? Vancouver Island. This island is an incredible place to be any time of the year, but it’s particularly special in the summer months. With so much to do and see, there’s a reason people who travel all over the world still say it’s the most beautiful place on earth. The summer is also a great time to get kids outside and exploring. Just because school is out doesn’t mean the learning has
to stop. Spending time outside gives kids the chance to create memories and build roots in their community, helping them develop a sense of stewardship for the places we call home, and all the creatures we share it with. Through building relationships with other people spending time outdoors, exploring the vast array of ecosystems the island has to offer, and connecting with all sorts of wildlife, children learn through their experiences why we love this place so much, and why we fight so hard to protect it.

pod of orcas surfaced right in front of me. They were so close to the shore it seemed like they must be touching the ocean floor. I was so elated it brought tears to my eyes and I couldn’t help but shout out in excitement. Then I saw it: the tiny dorsal fin of one of the pod’s newest members, playfully surfacing and diving while never straying too far from the rest of the pod. I
Fostering a love and respect for nature at a young age helps us raise the leaders we so desperately need as we look toward the future. We protect what we love, and we love what we know. Vancouver Island is home to many endangered living things such as the southern resident orca whales, the peregrine falcon, and the entire Garry oak ecosystem. Our children are growing up in a time when things are changing at an unprecedented rate, but this doesn’t mean it’s too late to make impactful changes. Take a look at the sea otter, for example. They almost went extinct in the early 1900s, but over the past 50 years, their population has grown to roughly 3,000 members! In my experience, it’s easier to show someone why they should care about something than to tell them. It’s also more productive to highlight the positive things than to focus on the negative. How do we communicate to our kids about climate change? How do we talk about ocean acidity, or deforestation, or declining species populations? We take them to explore tide pools and all the creatures that call them home. We go for walks in the forest and marvel at all can find magic wherever you go—you just the species that live together in harmony. have to get out there. Bridge to Nature
S
wan Lake Nature Sanctuary’s Floating Boardwalk will be closed this summer but will be replaced with a new structure that will open in the fall to “Bridge People to Nature.” You don’t have to wait for the boardwalk to reopen in the fall to start making new memories. Trails surrounding the lake remain open during construction. Visit the Nature House for a map of an alternate route. Enjoy an evening stroll along the trails; feed the ducks off the Founders Wharf; watch the otters and majestic Blue Heron; spend quality time with loved ones as you watch the sunset atop Christmas Hill. Yes, while you wait for the new boardwalk to be completed this fall, you can continue to enjoy nature and create precious memories.
Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that offers the community a place to enjoy the natural habitat that surrounds the Nature House in which programs and interactive displays educate both children and adults. A registered charitable organization, it is run by the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary Society. Donations to Swan Lake will provide a new Bridge to Nature for generations to come. Please visit swanlake.bc.ca or call 250-479-0211 for more information about the Bridges to Nature Campaign. Avoiding the Summer Slump
T
he weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, which means summer is almost here! With freedom from school on the lazy summer days, it’s easy for kids to slip out of their regular literacy routines that are established throughout the school year.
With fewer resources at their disposal and less guidance from educators, kids can experience the “summer slump,” a well-known and recognized issue that affects many children, especially those who struggle with reading. Studies in recent years have shown that depending on their age, children can lose up to two grade levels of reading skills during the summer. Encouraging your child to participate in literacy activities and to keep up with their reading during the summer is an excellent way to prevent this slump from happening. While it might seem like an overwhelming task to help maintain your child’s reading skills during their summer vacation, there are many ways that literacy can be made fun and woven into your summer activities. Cook Together. Cooking with your children is a great way to spend quality time together but is also a wonderful way for them to practice their reading and math skills, while creating a tasty treat. However, if the thought of tiny hands in the kitchen 48 Family Summer Guide
concerns you, inventing recipes, creating outdoor recipes, or helping to write or create a grocery shopping list are other ways to encourage literacy at home. Plan Family Reading Time. While DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time is a regular occurrence at school, it may not
be so easy at home. Modelling reading for your kids is an essential way for them to pick up good reading habits and to foster a love of reading in your children. Invite your children to read to you, or take turns reading books together. Play Literacy Games. Making story stones (for instructions, Google “Story Stones”) is a fun and crafty way for children to hone in on their creative side, build critical thinking skills through storytelling and grow their imagination. If you are heading out on a family vacation or road trip, utilizing your surroundings to play literacy games is a wonderful way to pass the time. The License Plate Game (searching for license plates from different Provinces or States) or the Road Sign Game (looking for road signs that have each letter of the alphabet) are great family activities for extended time in the car. Journal. There are many online journaling resources available, or your child can keep a paper copy. A journal is a great way
to open dialogue with your child about their summer activities and it is also a wonderful memento that your child can keep for years to come. If you prefer a bit more guidance for you and your child to engage in literacy learning this summer, your local library is a terrific resource that is at your disposal.
Kate Wood Both the Greater Victoria Public Library and the Sidney/North Saanich Vancouver Island Regional Library offer the Summer Reading Club. This free, seven-week long program encourages children to read each day by offering small incentives. A takehome reading record tracks the amount of reading that they accomplish each day, and small prizes are awarded for their efforts. The Summer Reading Club is a provincewide initiative, so even if you go away for a vacation, your child may still be able to participate. Along with the Summer Reading Club, both public library systems offer a wide variety of free summer programs for all ages. More information can be found at their respective websites: gvpl.ca and virl.bc.ca The library is not the only place offering summer literacy programs this year. The fourth annual Open-Air Library will commence at Iroquois Park in Sidney on Tuesday, July 3 at 10 a.m. Offered Tuesday mornings throughout the summer, this drop-in event is a good opportunity for families to come together and enjoy some fresh air and family-friendly reading materials while relaxing on a blanket in the park. Books are available for all ages; there is no need to register. This free program is sponsored by Saanich Peninsula Literacy in partnership with The Town of Sidney, and Peninsula Connections for Early Childhood (PCEC) “1000 X 5” Children’s Book Recycling Project. For dates and information, visit southislandliteracy.com. Finally, let’s talk digital resources. While there is much to be said for children “unplugging” from technology, since so much of our day-to-day lives are spent being plugged in, there are many valuable, free resources that can support your child’s learning capacity. Here is a short list of resources that IslandParent.ca

Stretch Your Summer Days W
hat do you like the most about summer? The warm summer days that stretch into relaxing evenings? The feeling of everlasting daylight that fills the sky? The special memories that will stay with you forever? With the weather on your side, summer evenings offer wonderful opportunities to stay outdoors. This year, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites have the perfect evening and daytime events to entertain everyone in your family. • On July 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Canada Day is the Fort’s biggest celebration of the year, with Victoria’s largest birthday cake to top it off! Be a kid again, dance yourself silly to the live music throughout the day, and take part in all the fun activities. • On July 14 and 15, Parks Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op are hosting “Learn to Camp.” Rally a few friends for their first camping trip during Camp-Out at the fort. Challenge them to a S’mores cooking competition and a race to see who will master the tent-building puzzle first. Reservation required. • On July 27 from 6 to 10 p.m., wrap your kids in their favourite blanket during the first ever Camp-In Movie at the fort. Instead of a drive-in movie experience, you can watch films on the big screen within the fort walls and even pitch a tent if you’d like to stay overnight. • On August 10 from 8 p.m. to midnight, peer into the early night sky to witness with your own eyes—or with the help of provided telescopes—this year’s Perseid Meteor Shower, a Star Gaze event not to

be missed by aspiring astronomers. Stay awake until your sleepy eyes can’t take it anymore, then retreat for a good night’s sleep in an oTENTik or your own tent. Reservations required for overnight stays. • On August 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the heat of August, kids of all ages now know that Victoria’s largest water gun battle always takes place at Fort Rodd Hill. Dress to get wet and have a blast—and bring your own water guns. Face painting and music will be on offer throughout the day. • On September 22, grab your coats and step into time as Fort Rodd Hill opens its doors for an exclusive, after-dark guided tour. Lantern tours start at 7 p.m. and run until 9:30 p.m. As the summer wraps up, grab your sweaters and step back in

Oh, Canada & Sunny Day Reads
H
ere in Canada we are spoiled by all of the beautiful places we can visit and explore, especially here on Vancouver Island. We can walk under huge fir trees and marvel at their beauty, surf towering waves in Tofino, climb mountains and amble through gorgeous gardens. Now that school’s out for the summer there’s more time and opportunities for families to get outside and explore the wilderness around them. If you need some inspiration to get you started, the following books look at Canada as a whole and at our coast. The first book is Canada Year by Year by Elizabeth MacLeod and illustrated by Sydney Smith (Kids Can Press, 2016). This book is jam-packed with facts and interesting details about Canada, from Confederation to 2017. One good thing about this book is that it doesn’t sugar coat our nation’s past. In addition to talking about heroes like Georgina Pope, Leonora Howard King, and Tom Longboat, MacLeod also covers residential schools, Japanese internment camps, and the British home children. For ages 8 to 12. The other fact-filled book about Canada is A Canadian Year: Twelve Months in the Life of Canada’s Kids by Tania McCartney and illustrated by Tina Snerling (EK Books, 2017). Unlike Canada Year by Year, all the facts in A Canadian Year are current. As your child reads through this book they will be introduced to five children from across Canada who will teach them about our nation. They will learn new words in English, French and Inuit. As the book goes through the different months McCartney covers the different celebrations that take place across the country, as well as the different types of foods we eat and the clothes we wear. For ages 5 to 9. The first story that brings us closer to home is Taan’s Moons: A Haida Moon Story by Alison Gear and illustrated by Kiki van der Heiden with children who live in Haida Gwaii (McKeller Martin, 2014). This beautiful poem takes the
reader through the yearly cycle of the moon and how it impacts Taan, which means “bear” in the Haida language. Throughout the book the names of the different moons, like Berries Ripen Moon are also written in Skidegate Haida and Old Massett Haida to introduce children to these different dialects. If you and your child would like to learn more, the end of the book has more information about the different Haida dialects. The felt images were created by children in kindergarten and grade one under the guidance of van der Heiden. For all ages. Another book that celebrates native art is Animals of the Salish Sea: Coast Salish First Nations and Native Art (Native Explore, Native Northwest, 2016) which features images by 13 different Coast Salish artists alongside text by Melaney Gleeson-Lyall. As you read through the book you will get to enjoy stunning native art while you learn what the different creatures who live in the sea and surrounding lands mean to the Coast Salish people. For ages 3 to 8. For a different look at our coast read Jocey Asnong’s West Coast ABCs (Rocky Mountain Books, 2018). Nuptse and Lhotse sail around the West Coast from Anvil Island to Zeballos Inlet. Along the way they meet octopi and orcas, pause to ski down Grouse Mountain, and watch whales from Wickaninnish Beach. The pictures are bright and cheerful inviting children to explore this unique region and the flora and fauna found here. The narrative feels rather broken, which is pretty standard for ABC books because they go through every letter of the alphabet in order. For ages 0 to 2. If all of these books about Canada and the West Coast have encouraged you to get outside and explore it for yourself then this last book is for you. Backpack Explorer: On the Nature Trail by the editors of Storey Publishing (Storey Publishing, 2018) shows children how to recognize different trees, paw prints and cloud types. The book gives some
suggestions to make hiking even more exciting by teaching children to make acorn whistles and other natural instruments as well as trail crafts. This book also teaches children how to pronounce words like exoskeleton and encourages physical literacy by encouraging children to hop like a frog and slither like a snake. Finally this book comes with stickers and

paper to make a map of your adventure, badges to stick to pages when you’ve seen the animal or animal tracks on that page, and a magnifying glass to see bugs and leaf veins up close. For ages 4 to 8. Take pictures, make mandalas with twigs and leaves, and relish the feeling of water on your skin as you splash in waves and skip rocks across the lake.

Summer Eating Tips Healthy Families, Happy Families
Child, Youth & Family Public Health
Eating Together
Fibre is well known for promoting regularity, but it is also important for increasing feelings of fullness, blood sugar control, lowering cholesterol and overall gut health. It’s easy to get excited about classic barbecue foods but don’t skip the veggies. Add the traditional lettuce and tomato to your burgers, or try cucumber and red pepper. Grilled veggie skewers are also a crowd pleaser. Side salads are an excellent way to have more veggies and take advantage of the summer leafy greens. For salads with creamy dressings like your classic potato salad, try swapping out the dressing with
Eating Outdoors
one made with oil and vinegar—they are quick, add a lighter taste and are lower in saturated fat.
Summer is prime time to gather the family to enjoy more meals together. Kids who eat with their families at least once a day develop better social and language skills, are more connected with their families and friends and have a better understanding of family values. They are also more likely to do better in school, be at a healthier weight and have an improved sense of belonging. Family meals are a great way to introduce nutritious foods, help children to develop positive relationships with food and learn food skills essential for life.

Take advantage of the warm summer months and enjoy a picnic or barbecue outside with your family. Hot dogs and smokies can be high in salt and fat and low in important nutrients such as protein and iron. Burgers can be a better choice, but they may also be high in salt and fat, depending on the type you buy. For a homemade version with a twist, check out the beef and lentil burger recipe on the following page. These burgers can be a great way to encourage children and less adventurous adult eaters to try a new food. Lentils are affordable, quick to prepare, and high in protein, fibre and iron. Iron helps to maintain energy levels, and many children and adults do not meet their daily iron needs.
Summer Sweets
For a sweet treat, take advantage of the delicious summer fruit. Berries, melons and stone fruits like peaches, nectarines and cherries are sweet, available and generally more affordable in the warmer months. If you buy a large amount or find they are ripening faster than you can eat them, try freezing or canning the extras. Turn your ripe fruit into a smoothie with some milk or milk alternative and yogurt. If you don’t finish your smoothie, freeze the rest in an ice cube tray or popsicle mold for another day. Popsicles have a better texture if the IslandParent.ca
mixture is thick and creamy before freezing, so leftover smoothies work well. If you are a fan of jams or pies, ripe summer berries are a great option. Try cooking them down

Eat Drink Local

id you know that buying from a locally-owned businesses is a great way to invest in our Island economy? Research has shown that for every $100 spent: • local retailers re-circulate $45 back into the local economy, versus $17 for chain stores • local restaurants re-circulate $65 compared to $30 for chains To support B.C.’s local food industry, The Ministry of Agriculture has launched the Buy BC: Eat Drink Local Campaign to connect diners with local food producers and restaurants that feature locally grown foods. I recently talked with Samantha
• B.C. produces all sorts of different types of food. Delicious vegetables, beef, pork, poultry and dairy: fruits from the Okanagan, seafood on our coast. B.C. even has locally grown grains. • Visiting a farmers’ market or a farm creates community connections. It helps kids appreciate the people behind the food. • Local food is healthy, wholesome and fresh. Though Scholefield is based in Vancouver, she acknowledges the local food scene on the Islands. “B.C. tastes better because it is fresher and, when you know the story behind the food, you get more excited about it, even as an adult,” said Scholefield. “I

Some key points:
Farmers’ Market Tacos
• Shopping at farmers markets and farm stands teaches kids about where their food comes from. Carrots don’t just come from a plastic bag in a grocery store, farmers pull them from the ground from their leafy green tops. • Eating local foods builds awareness around the seasons—what’s in season when—and how flavour is related to freshness. A locally ripened strawberry has so much more flavour than one that’s been transported from California.
This recipe was inspired by a trip to the James Bay Farmers’ Market. This year a family is selling fresh corn tortillas. They smelled so good, I had to buy them. Then I bought ground beef, cheese and all the vegetables required for a make-your-own tacos party. Tacos are a great way to get kids interested in trying new foods. Make a bunch of different fillings for a fun, flavourful experiment. Basic Toppings: Taco shells IslandParent.ca
