Year of the Dog A year ago, I stood amid a mosh pit of puppies and faced a no-win decision. The rambunctious runt of the litter, a big-eyed black-and-tan, nuzzled our daughter’s sneaker while a golden-furred sibling lolled beside my wife. Our son was away at a music lesson, so I held the deciding vote. My daughter and wife stared at me: “Which one do YOU like better?” I hoped we were still talking about puppies. And so I did what any smart dad would do. I abstained and bolted to buy some kibble.

Our daughter eventually won out. You can’t stand between a 12-year-old girl and the puppy who picked her. On the ride home, we agreed on a name for our rescue mutt: Cedar. Then 2020 hit and…well, you know the rest. Our lives suddenly shrank to the radius of a dog walk. At least we beat the rush to get a pandemic pet. I soon learned that raising a puppy, like parenting, is an exercise in humility. We read how-to books. We Zoomed with a trainer. We disciplined Cedar with treats and timeouts. But she only learns what she wants to learn. 4  Island Parent Magazine

We taught her to nose a jingle bell on our front door whenever she needs to do her business in the front yard. Genius! But now she also rings the bell to interrupt our dinner or demand attention. We abandoned kennel training after sleepless nights of angry yodelling and let her choose her favourite spots on our bed and sofa. Cedar understands an expanding vocabulary of things she loves: frisbee, ice cream, Grandpa, trampoline. She will sit solemnly until I announce “Bon appetit!” and only then rush her food dish. But key phrases like “Come back!” or “Stop

sister. Our son treats Cedar like a new high-school buddy, giving her high fives and random nicknames: Bougie, Belbin, Cheemington, Mrs. Wigglebottom. Together we speculate about what our puppy is thinking when she cocks her head, or darts down a trail, or meets another dog. We invent inner monologues and fill in thought bubbles above her pointy ears. Perhaps that’s just evidence we’ve been shut in for too long. But our pandemic pooch has filled in for one recent shortage that’s often overlooked: the need for stories. For months, our collective capacity to make stories about our lives has become depleted. We can’t have new adventures or experiences, or even swap tall tales with our friends face to face. We’ve all craved the taste of new stories as a tonic to that one Big Story that has hung over every news cycle and dinner conversation like a shadow...one that hopefully will be lifting with the dawn of 2021. An appetite for stories is why our kids have gravitated to social media and co-op video games, like Fortnite and Among Us. It’s why we’ve all Netflixed our way through the seasons, even if we didn’t feel exactly chill. Adding a dog has been like adopting an in-house story machine—one that needs no screen. We simply spin tales from Cedar’s ever-spinning tail. We retell the encounters she has on her walks. We imagine a rich inner life for her…even if she’s just, uh, “cleaning” herself on the couch. She has added hijinks and distraction, whether she knows it or not, and become shoving that damn tennis ball in my face a central new cast member in our collecwhile I’m trying to watch TV!” remain a tively authored family drama. foreign language to her. One day, when our family looks back, Still, she’s a gentle soul at heart. At the I hope we will all remember 2020 as the sight of another dog, no matter what size, Year of the Dog. We’ll mean that in the Cedar drops to her belly to show she’s no best of all possible ways. alpha…except in our house. Sometimes, she even rolls onto her back in total submission and pees madly in the air. And haven’t we all felt like doing that at least once over the past year? In our family, we each devise our own David Leach is a ways to communicate with her. “Who’s professor in the Departmy beautiful baby girl?” coos our daugh- ment of Writing at the ter, as though our “fur baby” is her little University of Victoria. Dog Science Unleashed In the Nat Geo Kids book Dog Science Unleashed, you’ll find 22 safe and dog-friendly activities you can enjoy alongside your canine companion while discovering what makes Fido tick. Here are a few sample activities: Righty or Lefty?

enough that your dog cannot stick his head under, but with enough room for a paw. Show your dog a treat and then slide it under the furniture. Record how many times he uses each paw to try to reach the treat. About one-third of dogs are rightpawed, one-third are left-pawed, and one-third don’t seem to have a preference. So whatever your results, your dog is in good company.

It’s not just people who favor one hand over the other! Dogs can be lefthanded, or rather, left-pawed, too. With these two activities, you can find out if your dog is a righty or a lefty. Add up how many times your dog used each paw in the tests. Did he favour one paw more often? Paw Preference Test 1: Place a small bit of painter’s tape on the end of your dog’s nose, right in the centre. Record how many times he uses each paw as he removes it. Paw Preference Test 2: Find a piece of furniture with a low edge, such as a sofa or a bookshelf. It should be low

id you know that Parks Canada protects 49 National Parks, 172 National Historic Sites and three National Marine Conservation Areas throughout our vast country? These places are incredibly special and represent important examples of Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. Did you also know that we have three of these locations in our very own southern Vancouver Island backyard? This spring, explore local and connect virtually to far-away places with your friends and family. Become a part of the Parks Canada community that literally stretches from coast to coast to coast! Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is a group of protected islands and islets scattered throughout the Salish Sea, accessible by BC Ferries to Pender, Saturna and Mayne Islands. Popular with recreational boaters, cyclists, day hikers, and frontcountry and backcountry campers alike. Gulf Islands National Park Reserve offers a myriad of outdoor and marinebased activities for visitors. Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites are two distinct historic sites located in Colwood, just 20 minutes west of downtown Victoria. The sites welcome visitors to experience a myriad of stories and activities about history, nature, Indigenous culture.

Did you know that the southern Gulf Islands are known for their Mediterranean-like climate? This is why visitors to Gulf Islands National Park Reserve are rewarded with a lush paradise of rare ecosystems. Pick your pod and dive into Orcas: Our Shared Future When it comes to memorable Vancouver Island moments, nothing beats the thrill of seeing a pod of orcas at play in the open ocean. It’s an exhilarating experience—a welcome tonic for COVID-weary spirits and a profound reminder that we are all a part of nature, not apart from it. And that’s precisely the theme explored in the Royal BC Museum’s newest feature exhibition, Orcas: Our Shared Future, premiering on April 16, 2021 and closing January 9, 2022. This family-friendly exhibition offers a deep dive into the stories and science that surround the magnificent orca—spirit of British Columbia’s wild coast and apex predator of all oceans. This much anticipated exhibition follows the currents of ecological activism, popular culture and Indigenous beliefs to ignite a new appreciation of these sophisticated animals, long feared in Western cultures as “killer whales.” Visitors will discover the complex social structure of orca society, reflect on the surprising consequences of captivity, and learn which orca populations are thriving and which are at risk. The exhibition features more than 100 original artifacts and specimens, including a complete 3D skeleton of an adult female orca suspended in the air so visitors can appreciate the size and scale of these remarkable mammals. Indigenous cultural belongings stewarded by the Royal BC Museum will also be displayed, including a dramatically large Kwakwaka’wakw feast dish by Mungo Martin and Henry Hunt, and a tiny gold box with Killer Whale lid by acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid. Aided by life-size replicas, unique interactive displays and games, and short films and videos, visitors of all ages will emerge with a new understanding of how orcas and humans are inextricably connected. Amongst the interactive stations is Acoustic Turbulence (by Victoria, BC, artist Colton Hash), an interactive artwork that visualizes underwater noise

pollution generated by large ocean vessels, and the differences between primary sources of noise pollution: engines, sonar and propellers. These sounds impact the ability of marine organisms to communicate and navigate. Noise pollution is particularly significant to the Southern Resident orcas, as it reduces their ability to hunt through echolocation. Viewers can choose scenes of ships and experience sounds generated by each type. Other interactive stations include Orca or Not? Visitors listen to a series of sounds and guess if they were made by an orca or something else. And the Ocean Health Game, in which players move game pieces around a coastal environment and witness the impacts of their choices on the health of the ocean. Last but certainly not least is the Selfie-Station, where visitors can take a photo by which to remember their visit and spread the word about ocean health, orca protection and the exhibition. With enhanced health and safety standards, this exhibition has been carefully designed and strictly monitored to adhere to COVID safety protocols. Visitors to the exhibition and those hoping to visit will want to purchase the beautifully illustrated companion publication that brings together the work of marine biologists, Indigenous knowledge keepers, poets, artists and storytellers. The best-selling Spirits of the Coast: Orcas in Science, Art and History ($29.95; edited by Dr. Martha Black, Dr. Lorne Hammond, and Dr. Gavin Hanke with Nikki Sanchez), is currently available through local bookshops, the Royal Museum Shop and online at rbcm.ca/books. Orcas: Our Shared Future is presented in partnership with MuseumsPartner, who worked on the popular Egypt and Maya feature exhibitions in 2018 and 2019. It has been designed to travel to other museums during the UNESCO Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), which is intended to support global efforts to reverse the decline in ocean health.

Family Resource Guide 2021  21

1-80

AGGV’s new Family Sunday Coordinator, illustrator, designer, and art educator, April Caverhill, has been working with a range of artists to bring engaging online content to our Family Sunday community. “Knowing our virtual format makes Family Sunday accessible to an even wider audience than our in-person gatherings is an unexpected side benefit of our digital iteration”. Since October, our guests have included guerilla gardeners, opera singers, improv artists, and eco-warriors. All of these dynamic guests have given us entertaining insight into what they do, while offering up delightful interactive activities for our viewers. Our line-up of Family Sunday guests for the next several months is equally exciting, so please check out our website for upcoming video releases every third Sunday of the month (October-June): aggv.ca/ events.

22  Island Parent Magazine

Of course, we’re all looking forward to when that time comes to gather in the Gallery once again for some fabulous hands-on family fun! We wish you all a new season filled with hope and artistic abundance. In response to COVID-19, the AGGV has introduced a new way for families to explore the AGGV collection: Meetups. Don't miss Parent and Tot, every third Thursday of the month from 10am-10:45am. Adults $2.50, children free. Please sign up in advance: aggv.ca/meetups-at-the-aggv.

The Balancing Act of Budgeting

R

aising kids in the 21st century during a global pandemic feels very similar to being a trapeze artist walking a tightrope. We’ve got soaring real estate prices and rental costs, extracurricular activities, education savings, increasing grocery bills, and subscriptions for everything. Finding a way to continue the show keeps parents anxiously teetering and worried of falling. Household finances are not static nor are they always predictable—but they are never-ending. Let’s look at how a budget can provide the balance, stability, and safety needed for a successful circus act called parenting. Start by looking beyond the current month. Throughout the year there are birthdays, celebrations, vacations, rainy

days, and in the case of the past 12 months, lockdowns and they all need to be considered for to achieve balance. Putting a small contribution aside each month for these upcoming events (whether you know the date to expect them or not) will provide additional safety up on that tightrope. Getting to the other side requires focus—always look where you are going, not where you’ve come from. A budget is your guide to get where you’re going, but you first need to know where that is. Set clear goals with realistic timelines to offer the clarity necessary to keep going. You’ll need to practice. Creating a balanced budget takes more than a pen, paper, and calculator nowadays. Just when you think you’ve got it all right, someone

throws you one more ball to juggle. Commit to several drafts before choosing the budget you’ll work with and come back to review it on a regular basis to update as necessary. Make sure you seek out equipment that fits and makes you feel safe. This is equally as important with your money as it would be if you were flying through the air. Some like to keep it simple with pen and paper while others prefer one of the several budgeting apps now available. If your equipment doesn’t fit, you’ll never feel comfortable to come back month after month.

How Kids Use Social Media Impacts their Well-being

W

hat’s most important for overall happiness is how—not if—a person uses social media. Derrick Wirtz, an associate professor of teaching in psychology at at UBC Okanagan, studied how people use three major social platforms—Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—and how that use can impact a person’s overall well-being. “Social network sites are an integral part of everyday life for many people around the world,” says Wirtz. “Every day, billions of people interact with social media. Yet the widespread use of social network sites stands in sharp contrast to a comparatively small body of research on how this use impacts a person’s happiness.”

tively portray others positively may lead social media users to underestimate how much others actually experience negative emotions and lead people to conclude that their own life—with its mix of positive and negative feelings—is, by comparison, not as good,” he says. Wirtz notes that viewing other people’s posts and images while not interacting with them lends itself to comparison without the mood-boosting benefits that ordinarily follow social contact, undermining well-being and reducing self-esteem. “Passive use, scrolling through others’ posts and updates, involves little personto-person reciprocal interaction while providing ample opportunity for upward comparison.”

Even before COVID-19 and self-isolation became standard practice, Wirtz says social media has transformed how we interact with others. Face-to-face, in-person contact is now matched or exceeded by online social interactions as the primary way people connect. While most people gain happiness from interacting with others face-to-face, Wirtz notes that some come away from using social media with a feeling of negativity—for a variety of different reasons. One issue is social comparison. Participants in Wirtz’s study said the more they compared themselves to others while using social media, the less happy they felt. “Viewing images and updates that selec-

As part of his research, study participants were asked about four specific functions of Facebook—checking a news feed, messaging, catching up on world news and posting status or picture updates. The most frequently used function was passively checking one’s news feed. Participants primarily used Facebook without directly connecting with other users, and the negative effects on subjective well-being were consistent with this form of use. During COVID-19, Wirtz notes people naturally turn to social media to reduce feelings of social isolation. Yet, his research (conducted before the pandemic) found that although people used social media more when they were lonely, time

spent on social media only increased feelings of loneliness for participants in the study. “Today, the necessity of seeing and hearing friends and family only through social media due to COVID-19 might serve as a reminder of missed opportunities to spend time together.” The more people used any of these three social media sites, the more negative they reported feeling afterwards. “The three social network sites examined—Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—yielded remarkably convergent findings,” he says. “The more respondents had recently used these sites, either in aggregate or individually, the more negative effect they reported when they responded to our randomlytimed surveys over a 10-day period.” Wirtz’s study also included offline interactions with others, either face-to-face or a phone call. Comparing both offline communication with online, he was able to demonstrate that offline social interaction had precisely the opposite effect of using social media, strongly enhancing emotional well-being. But all is not lost, Wirtz says, as this research also reveals how people can use social media positively, something more important than ever during COVID-19. He suggests people avoid passively scrolling and resist comparing themselves to other social media users. He also says people should use social media sites to enable direct interactions and social connectedness—for example, talking online synchronously or arranging time spent with others in-person, when possible and with proper precautions. “If we all remember to do that, the negative impact of social media use could be reduced—and social networks sites could even have the potential to improve our well-being and happiness,” he adds. “In other words, we need to remember how we use social media has the potential to shape the effects on our day-to-day happiness.”

Applications can be done online and take approximately 15 minutes. Families who previously qualified for MSP Premium Assistance should not need to re-apply if taxes are completed yearly. It is advised to confirm coverage before proceeding with treatment to avoid paying out of pocket.

5 Nature Connection Activities

“M

om, what story do you think this rock has to tell?” asks my then six-year-old son. I was proud and relived. He tapped into mystery and wonder when we connect with Mother Nature (often easier for kids than adults!) If you asked me, a root cause of our current climate chaos and ecological collapse is our profound disconnection with the living world. It’s also leading to climate anxiety and eco-grief. Ponder this: “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.” ~ Rumi We can take steps to reconcile our relationship to our non-human kin. Then we’ll do less harm to ourselves, others and the planet. Each day find mystery, magic, seek beauty and awe. Being in nature takes you out of yourself and it’s in nature you realize, there’s more in the world than me. As a family, try a playful game to sense perception exercises to help experience Mother Nature as kin, a teacher and even a healer: Sleeping Fawn. In this game children are sleeping fawns. Fawns must stay still but keep their faces shown while they pretend their deer mom is away. An adult plays the coyote, who sniffs around the field or forest looking for its prey. Remember fawns don’t have a scent! Stillness is the secret and allows kids to sink into nature—a nice change from popular pursuit games. The coyote tries to get the fawns to move without touching them or speaking words. Coyote behaviour like yelping, jumping and playing or being foolish is okay. When the fawn moves, it’s “caught” and out of the game. Forest schoolers know this game from Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature by Jon Young, Ellen Haas, and Evan McGown.

Talk to plants and animals. Did you plant a pandemic garden or start a butterfly garden with native plants? Chat with carrots, tomatoes, huckleberries, or house plants as if they are a conscious being. Speak out loud because your words show respect and connection. It may seem silly at first (for adults), but this practice develops relationships with the more-than-human world. It helps widen our boundaries for compassion. Nature reciprocity. Act as if everything you meet is alive, that it matters and has its own story—the rock, the moss, a tree. Joanna Macy’s Work That Reconnects shares this exercise and more to encourage us to be open to communication. Whisper and touch the trees. Practice witnessing and being seen. Show reciprocity. Ask your child: Is the water or tree looking back at you? Is it sensing or watching you as you are sensing and watching it? Do you think rocks speak

to water? Let your senses be awake and speak aloud a gratitude. Send that tree love and thanks, wish it well with how the world is. Forest floor cuddle. Lay on your belly on the forest floor. Tune into the sounds, smells and sights. Notice the tiny fungi, mosses and look up to the canopy. It’s grounding to sense your smallness, feel humble and notice the power of your insignificance at this scale. Comfortable here? Try cupping your face with your hands, resting on your elbows. Close your eyes for a few minutes and imagine a landscape, a cherished pet or person as you cup your face. This practice can wake up the vagus nerve, aka the physical manifestation of the soul. Tune into your mind-body connection, calm the nervous system and chill out. Soak it all

up! You can also try this at the beach, on a mountain top, or in the backyard. Birthday gratitude. Practice an annual gratitude ritual on your birthday! Gratitude is a social emotion; it points to what’s already there. It also solidifies our relationship with living mystery, enhances our resilience and will help us face hard information. What do you notice happening in nature on our birthday? What’s in bloom or what is going to rest? What are the smells and sounds in nature? What textures do you notice in the sky, on a leaf or in the snow? It can be grounding to reflect on what was happing on Earth when you took your first breath of air. Powerful acts to reconnect also include walking barefoot, skipping rocks, stargazing, making a mud pie or smelling the rain! Kids and adults alike need to access their feelings about our living world, it’s wonder, loss and mystery. Nurture wonder and nourish that relationship with the living world through storybooks, too. 1. You Are Stardust by Elin Kelsey 2. A Stone Sat Still by Brendan Wenzel 3. Frog Girl by Paul Owen Lewis 4. Up the Mountain Path by Marianne Dubuc We’re all a participant in this wondrous universe. Lindsay Coulter is a dedicated mother of two, naturalist, community catalyst, soul activist, mentor, writer and horse lover. Find her @SaneAction on Instagram and Facebook.
