Islandport Turns 20 . . . Still Telling Stories My roots twist deep into Maine soil. I was born in Bar Harbor, a ninth generation Mainer, and was raised in the island fishing village that my ancestors settled in the early 1800s. I am the son, grandson, great grandson, brother, uncle, and great-uncle of lobster fishermen and fisherwomen—I’ve even pulled a few traps myself once upon a time. I have raised my daughters in Yarmouth, still just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic. And I love books. I spent hours reading while growing up eight miles at sea; one of just a handful of children attending my island’s one-room school. But I also listened—listened to the stories and tales told at the family fish wharf or over cribbage at my grandmother’s kitchen table. Like many places, stories were an essential part of the culture, the vibrancy, and the community’s self-image. Decades removed from those childhood days, I remain an unrepentant believer in books, reading, and the power of story, understanding the critical role they both play in the state’s identity—helping preserve its heritage, define its culture, and serve as guideposts to its future. As a reporter, editor, and publisher for more than three decades, I have travelled to every corner of not only Maine, but New England seeking out those stories—authentic stories, real stories, both old and new, sad and happy, comfortable and unexpected that bind us. At Islandport, we strive to give voice to farmers, teachers, explorers, humorists, journalists, immigrants, fishermen, cooks, daydreamers, and so many others. Why? Because we believe such stories, both real and imagined, are vital and that, in many cases, if we don’t do it, no one will. In many ways, that drives us. I am not the only one at Islandport with long ties to the Pine Tree State: Shannon, like her ancestors, was raised amongst the potato fields of Caribou; Taylor grew up in Woodville and attended high school in the paper mill town of East Millinocket, Teresa spent her childhood in Brewer and crossed the legendary Penobscot for high school; while Holly raised her family in Yarmouth, choosing to live beside Casco Bay. As we reflect on Islandport’s twenty years, we couldn’t be more proud of our accomplishments and those of our authors, especially given the radical and disruptive change that has swept through the book and publishing industry since we released Hauling by Hand in March of 2000. Like the people of Maine from the St. John to the coast, we are continually adjusting to new realities. Through it all we have published more than 200 titles with no plans to slow down. There are just too many good stories to tell.

NEW FICTION

A riveting coming-of-age novel told in retrospect by a washed-out taxi-driving musician from Baxter, Maine, who must come to terms with his past by returning to Maine and confronting the secrets and violence in his family. NEW

Blue Summer A Novel

By Jim Nichols At forty, Cal Shaw has seen better days, that’s for sure, but it wasn’t always like this. He grew up with his brother, Alvin, and his sister Julia, in the small Maine town of Baxter, confident in his own capabilities, especially regarding music. He took his happy life for granted, as lucky children often do. But everything changed when he was ten and his dad died in a freak accident. Soon, trouble, mostly in the form of a violent stepfather, found a home—his home. As an escape, the Shaw kids turned to music lessons with family friend Uncle Gus, but it turns out no one can escape the violence and grief that rains down on the Shaws. Blue Summer is the story of the Shaw family’s undoing, and Cal’s struggle to grow up in a world determined to break him. Even his music threatens to take him down with booze-filled nights and one-night stands. As Cal tries to make sense of his existence, living as far away from his family as he can, a snippet of melody comes to him—timeless and haunting. But before he can finish it, his past asserts itself with a phone call that Uncle Gus is dying and it’s time to come home and face an altogether different kind of music. In this story, author Jim Nichols writes a riveting coming-of-age novel that examines the melancholy fate of a boy torn apart by loss and domestic abuse, and the justice he eventually delivers, all the while writing a beautiful melody to counter it all, a song he calls ‘Blue Summer.’ Coming August 11, 2020 U.S. $ 17.95 | CAN $ 20.95 ISBN: 978-1-952143-03-8 Fiction, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 256 pages

JIM NICHOLS grew interested in fiction writing while working as a ticket agent for a commuter airline in Rockland. Born in Brunswick and raised in Freeport, Maine, Nichols has worked variously as bartender, pilot, skycap, taxi driver, fence builder, orange picker, travel agent, and dispatcher for an air taxi service. His writing, which draws from his many experiences, has appeared in numerous regional and national magazines including Esquire, Narrative,The Clackamas Review, American Fiction, River City, and Night Train. He has been nominated several times for Pushcart prizes, and his novel Closer All the Time won the Maine Literary Award for Fiction. Nichols now lives in Warren, Maine, with his wife Anne, and their two rescue dogs, Brady and Jessie. They have two grown sons, Aaron and Andrew.

Maine boasts fascinating history—each and every day of the year. This Day in Maine

A Day-By-Day Celebration of Maine History

By Joseph Owen Since achieving statehood in 1820, Maine has developed into a sometimes mythical vacationland of moose and lobsters and lighthouses set against breathtaking vistas and endless natural beauty. But the state’s history is more real than postcards; replete with tragedy and triumph, and boasting powerful politicians, brilliant inventors, successful athletes, and talented creative professionals. Although a small state, it has often touched the world in an outsized way, from the heroics of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Little Round Top during the Civil War to the inspiration and sadness of young Samantha Smith during the Cold War. Along the way, Margaret Chase Smith has inspired, Stephen King has scared, and the Ice Storm challenged. This fascinating book from Joseph Owen, a long-time newspaperman, chronicles day-by-day, from January 1 to December 31, the highlights and lowlights, the famous and infamous, and the big and small of everyday life in Maine. Perfect for history buffs, lovers of Maine, and those looking to learn more about the state during its bicentennial.

Ruth Moore, one of the great regional novelists of the twentieth century, brilliantly and authentically captures not only the specific characteristics of coastal Maine, but chronicles universal human drama as the two primary families feud, gossip, and struggle all while being battered by the relentless tides of change sweeping over their community and their entire way of life. Voices Off the Ocean

A Literary Visit to Ruth Moore’s Maine

Edited by Dean Lunt Ruth Moore was a literary giant of regional fiction during the mid-twentieth century, compared favorably to William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, and Flannery O’Connor. Moore was born in the tiny Maine island fishing village of Gotts Island and brought her upbringing to her writing. Few other authors have so authentically captured coastal Maine, its people, and the midcentury as Moore, while also telling universal tales of human drama that went beyond the patch of rocky soil on which her stories were set. The New York Times declared, “It is doubtful if any American writer has ever done a better job of communicating a people, their talk, their thoughts, their geography, and their way of life.” This new collection of her work features excerpts from Moore’s novels, ballads, and poetry that showcase her brilliant writing and prove its staying power and influence on regional writing today. Coming July 7, 2020 U.S. $17.95 / CAN $20.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-73-5 Maine Fiction Anthology / softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 224 p.

Born and raised in the Maine fishing village of Gotts Island, RUTH MOORE (1903–1989) emerged as one of the most important Maine authors of the twentieth century, best known for her authentic portrayals of Maine people and her evocative descriptions of the state. In her time, she was favorably compared to Faulkner, Steinbeck, Caldwell and O’Connor. She graduated from Albany State Teacher’s College and worked at a variety of jobs in New York, Washington, D.C., and California, including as personal secretary to Mary White Ovington, a founder of the NAACP, and at Reader’s Digest. Her debut novel in 1943, The Weir was hailed by critics and established Moore as novelist, but her second novel, Spoonhandle reached great success, spending fourteen weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and was made into the movie, Deep Waters. The success of Spoonhandle provided her with the financial security to build a house in Bass Harbor and spend the rest of her life writing novels in her home state. Ultimately, she wrote 14 novels. Moore and her partner, Eleanor Mayo, travelled extensively, but never again lived outside of Maine. Moore died in Bar Harbor in 1989.

Frances Perkins Changed America. Frances Perkins

Champion of the American Worker

By Ruth Cashin Monsell Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve as a Presidential cabinet member, was a national force in the mid-twentieth century striving to dramatically improve the lives and safety of working class Americans of all ages. Perkins, a loyal supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, emerged as the chief architect of his famous New Deal and was instrumental in U.S. instituting social security, unemployment insurance, child labor laws, and a federal minimum wage. The foundation for many of her national efforts was forged in New York where she campaigned for sanitary regulations for bakeries, fire protection for factories, and legislation to limit weekly working hours for women and children. A seminal moment during that time was the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, one of the worst workplaces disasters in U.S. history. Perkins watched on March 25, 1911 as fire escapes collapsed, ladders couldn’t reach high floors, and locked exit doors prompted forty-seven workers to leap to their deaths in an effort to escape the flames. Perkins was born in Boston and grew up in Worcester, but her home in Washington and her family home in Maine are both designated National Historic Landmarks. Coming May 5, 2020

Aroostook County is both a place, and a way of life. Stories of Aroostook The Best of Echoes Magazine

Edited By Kathryn Olmstead For nearly thirty years, Echoes magazine brought the culture, heritage, landscape, and people of Aroostook County to readers in Maine and across the United States. Publisher Kathryn Olmstead, who founded the magazine along with Gordon Hammond, once told a newspaper: “In our experience, a place like Aroostook County is the kind of place most people can only imagine.” Olmstead and Hammond, both “from away” set out to share the experience of living in an area where people not only leave vehicles unattended and unlocked, but running in the winter to keep the engines warm. But what started as a portrait of a place, quickly evolved into a magazine with a mission—affirming the value of living simply with respect for nature, not as an escape, but as a way of life. Stories of Aroostook is a curated collection of articles and essays from the pages of the beloved quarterly magazine, all capturing the spirit and sense of place that makes Aroostook County unforgettable. Hauling By Hand The Life and Times of a Maine Island

By Dean Lawrence Lunt Revised Edition of the book that launched Islandport Press. Hauling by Hand tells the remarkable story of Frenchboro, Long Island, which sits eight miles off the Maine coast, making it one of the state’s most remote outposts. It is one of only fourteen Maine islands still supporting a year-round community, while only a century ago, there were some 300 such communities. The island’s roots were set in the 1820s by the Lunt family and a small band of pioneers who together carved an island community from the spruce and granite shores. Fueled by the shipping and fishing industries, Long Island evolved from outpost to vibrant offshore port before economic changes transformed the island into a hardscrabble turn-of-the-century fishing village where nearly 200 residents scratched a living from depleted fishing stocks and rocky soil. Today, the scenic town of Frenchboro has a population of nearly fifty people, but it has neither a general store, nor tourist hotel, nor daily ferry service. Instead there is a village, a soul, and a way of life. Coming August 4, 2020 U.S. $24.95 | CAN $27.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-23-0 History, softcover, 6 x 9, 528 p.

DEAN L. LUNT was born in the Maine island fishing village of Frenchboro, a member of the eighth generation of Lunts that called the remote island home. He earned a dual degree from Syracuse University and worked as an award-winning newspaper reporter in three states, including Maine and Massachusetts, for nearly twelve years and later as a freelance editor and project manager. Lunt left newspapers and founded Islandport Press in 2000 and has since edited or published more than 200 books, most tied in some way to the culture and heritage of Maine or New England. Lunt has written two nonfiction books, Hauling by Hand and Here for Generations. His fourth book, Speaking Maine, will be released in October 2020. He lives in Yarmouth with his wife, Michelle.

Here for Generations

All Is Calm

By Samuel Eliot Morison

By Dean Lunt

Edited by Shannon Butler

The Story of Mount Desert Island, by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Samuel Eliot Morison, is part tribute to the glories and beauty of a place and part history of its people who could be “fisherman, sailor, farmer, lumberman, shipwright, and quarryman rolled into one, and master of all.”

Here for Generations tells the remarkable tale of a town and a bank that have moved in concert for 150 years. The book captures their sweeping history through triumph and tragedy and brings to life the fascinating people and events that have shaped their journey.

All Is Calm is a look at the lives of Mainers during the holidays from the mid-1800s, to the Great Depression, to modern day. Spanning nearly 200 years, these stories show that while Christmas traditions and trends may be changing, the warmth, gratitude, and humility of the Maine spirit is evergreen.

By Earl Brechlin This collection of historic postcard images offers a nostalgic look at Boston, Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard during the early 20th century.

Trappers, foresters, lumbermen, woods folk, and wild animals, as well as frozen dogsled runs, hunting, fishing, simple joys, and awe-inspiring beauty, form the backdrop for Hamlin’s remarkable adventure.

Smith offers a nostalgic look at her childhood on the coast and her observations of life under the big sky and among the rolling potato fields of her beloved Aroostook County, where she has lived for nearly seven decades.

Glenna Johnson Smith is back with her customary combination of sass, insight, and nostalgia in Return of Old Maine Woman—a collection of essays on growing up, being female, and getting older in the northern parts of the state.

3 BERT and I The iconic “Bert and I” stories were written by Yale students Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan in the late 1950s and performed around campus. The two amateur storytellers soon recorded a short 10-inch album of 11 stories for friends and family, but ultimately pressed just a few hundred. However, their popularity prompted them in 1958 to record and release Bert and I … And Other Stories from Down East, considered the seminal commercial album of New England humor and storytelling. The structure, cadence, and tone they mastered established the blueprint for all who followed, while material from their stories became a part of popular culture (think: You can’t get they-ah from he-ah). Together, the duo recorded four original albums, and Dodge emerged as the premier live performer of his generation. Dodge and Bryan’s influence on storytelling and Down East humor remains unmatched, and their legacy lives on around the campfires and on stages across New England.

FICTION

Winner of the 2016 Maine Literary Award for Fiction

Closer All the Time By Jim Nichols The inhabitants of Baxter, Maine, are going nowhere fast—but not for lack of trying. In this deftly written jewel of a novel, veteran author Jim Nichols strings together the bittersweet stories of several different characters bound together by shared geography and the insular nature of small-town life. There’s Johnny Lunden, a well-meaning war veteran with a penchant for the local bar and a deep but doomed love for his family. There’s eight-year-old Ted Soule, who shares a first kiss with the Ophelialike Nadia, the daughter of his Russian neighbors, and Tomi Lambert who observes the confusion of the adults around her as they struggle with accepting their fates. In a wonderfully authentic New England setting, Nichols explores the nature of connection––hoped for, missed, lost, and found. By Ardeana Hamlin

Set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Bangor, when it was the lumber capital of the world, Hamlin tells the stories of three women brought together by the infamous brothel called Pink Chimneys. In order to survive, they must form unlikely alliances and discover the strength to overcome the odds in a culture that tries––and fails––to limit their potential.

Set in nineteenth century Maine, Abbott’s Reach is the story of a headstrong woman setting sail on her honeymoon voyage with her sea captain husband. Adventure punctuates their travels between Maine and Hawaii. This gripping novel is the sequel to Pink Chimneys, a Maine classic centered around a notorious Bangor brothel.

The Havener Sisters follows Abbott’s Reach and Pink Chimneys in Ardeana Hamlin’s collection of novels set in nineteenth-century Maine. The story follows the Havener triplets as an unexpected economic crisis gives them a new perspective on their aging lives. This well-researched novel will transport readers back in time to the dawn of suffrage and the industrial age in the Northeast.

Dramatic and romantic, these short novels helped intensify the area’s popularity. this collection includes eleven selections by authors such as Jane austin, constance Harrison, Marion crawford, and edward church.

The Contest

By Miriam Colwell

By Miriam Colwell

By James Hurley

Contentment Cove is a riveting story of class distinctions in a 1950s Down East village during a time of cultural change. Though the book is infused with humor, it also deals with serious issues that remain relevant today, none more compelling than the erosion of one way of Maine life and the evolution of another.

Young is a lively and moving novel of one young woman’s restlessness and struggle with life in a small Maine coastal town during the 1950s. Timeless themes still resonate as Evelyn graduates and confronts the question: What is she going to do with her life?

The Contest is a deftly interwoven tale that explores the camaraderie and sportsmanship among anglers. In this skillful tale, author James Hurley challenges the wisdom of chasing perfection, encouraging the reader instead to revel in life’s most important moments, however brief or passing.
