Our 20th anniversary

Ordering Information

This fall, Islandport Press begins a yearlong celebration of our 20th anniversary, and we couldn’t be more proud given the radical and disruptive change that has swept through the book industry since we published Hauling by Hand: The Life and Times of a Maine Island in 2000. Publisher Dean Lunt started the company in his Yarmouth basement and shipped early book orders from his garage, at times in temperatures so cold he had to plug in spot heaters so the tape would stick to the cardboard boxes. Today, we have published more than 200 books and employ five full-time staffers—Dean, Holly, Shannon, Teresa, and Taylor— including two Maine-based in-house sales representatives, a rarity in today’s book world. As fall turns to winter and winter turns to spring, you will hear a lot more about our anniversary and the great books we are prepping to release.

NEW CHRISTMAS NEW

Reflections on the Christmas season in Maine that warm the heart and make spirits bright. All Is Calm

A Maine Christmas Reader

Edited by Shannon Butler When many people think of Christmas they dream of snow covered pine trees and a small cabin warmed by the wood fire on a cold December day. Since Maine was founded, people have written stories about the joys of Christmas in the state. In times of hardship and in times of wealth, Maine and her people have always put the value of Christmas in time shared with family and friends, connections with the natural world, rich traditions, and warm wood stoves. In a collection featuring essays, stories, and poetry, All Is Calm is a look at the lives of Mainers during the holidays from the mid-1800s, to the Great Depression, to modern day. Spanning nearly 200 years, these stories show that while Christmas traditions and trends may be changing, the warmth, gratitude, and humility of the Maine spirit is evergreen. Skiing with Henry Knox

By Matt Weber

A Personal Journey Along Vermont’s Catamount Trail

How I Learned to Love Snowmobiling in Maine

Matt Weber, a commercial fisherman and craft brewer, takes up snowmobiling and recounts his adventures and misadventures learning the ropes. Weber brings readers along on his journey from buying his first snowmobile to exploring the four best snowmobiling regions of Maine—Jackman, the Western Mountains, Eastern Maine, and the County—in a series of rides that see much learning and laughter and showcase the sheer joy of being outdoors in winter. The book includes tips and helpful information on snowmobiling in Maine. U.S. $ 16.95 | CAN $ 19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-75-9 Nonfiction / Outdoors, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 160 p.

By Sam Brakeley In 2015, Sam Brakeley stood at a crossroads in his life. His long-time girlfriend was moving to Utah and he was torn between following her or remaining in New England with family, friends, and the land he loved. So he set out to complete the Catamount Trail, a 330-mile cross-country ski trail that runs across Vermont from the Massachusetts border to Canada. He took advantage of his time in the woods to reach a decision—and brought Henry Knox along for the trip. In 1775, Knox undertook a winter journey of similar length, retrieving dozens of artillery pieces from the recently captured Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain and dragging them 300 miles through snow and cold to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to help George Washington drive the entrenched British army from Boston. By exploring Knox’s eighteenth-century physical and emotional journey while undertaking his own twenty-first-century trip on the Catamount Trail, Brakeley reminds us that history has many lessons to offer the living. U.S. $ 16.95 | CAN $ 19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-76-6 Nonfiction / Outdoors, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 280 p.

Evergreens

A Collection of Maine Outdoor Stories

By John Holyoke There is nothing that outdoors columnist John Holyoke loves more than a good story. In his first book, Evergreens, Holyoke shares a curated collection of essays featuring people who are passionate about the outdoors, as well as his memorable encounters with creatures—from salmon to deer to moose to squirrels—that fascinate and confound him. Sprinkled throughout are memories of the events that have shaped him as he recounts the benefits of spending time with friends in the woods, fields, and waters of Maine. As Holyoke says, “I am here to take you on an adventure. Along the way, you’re welcome to laugh, cry, or smile, or reach for the phone to call an old friend and tell them that they still matter.” U.S. $ 16.95 | CAN $ 19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-77-3 Nonfiction / Outdoors, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 216 p.

John Holyoke is an award-winning journalist who has been entertaining and informing readers of the Bangor Daily News for twenty-five years. His natural curiosity has helped make him a master of the “People Story,” and his job as outdoor editor has allowed him to travel to some of the state’s most special places in search of experiences to savor and tales to share. Holyoke grew up in Brewer, graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, and has been writing for newspapers since sixth grade. He is an avid hunter and fly fisherman who loves spending time at his family camp on Beech Hill Pond in Otis.

The Old Mainer and the Sea

By Astrid Sheckels

Written by Robert F. Baldwin Illustrated by Astrid Sheckels

By Jean M. Flahive Illustrated by Mari Dieumegard

A beautifully illustrated book set on a Maine island fishing village. A summer visitor gives a young islander a new perspective and a fresh look at the people and traditions that have shaped his past and will chart his future.

Eben goes fishing one day, rowing six miles from his island home, hauling in cod as he goes. But a porpoise tangles his lines, fog rolls in, and an accident leads to a broken oar. Lonely, tired, and adrift, Eben is almost ready to give up when rescue comes in an unexpected form. The Old Mainer and the Sea is an allegorical tale about the circular nature of hope and deliverance.

The Five Stones Trilogy introduces the realms of Ayda and a centuriesold battle for control. At stake are the four stones of power and the elusive Fifth Stone that binds them all.

Whatever it Takes

Seven Decades of True Love, Hard Work, and No Regrets By May Davidson For nearly seventy years, May and Jim Davidson shared an unbreakable love of Maine and a relentless drive to do “whatever it takes” to achieve success and happiness. They fell in love as teenagers, built their first house using twenty dollars worth of lumber, and set about creating the life of their dreams. They soon learned that optimism alone wouldn’t sustain them. To make ends meet, they lobstered, fished, farmed sheep, started a lobster trap sawmill, and crisscrossed the country as long haul truckers. They eventually collapsed into debt and uncertainty while trying to raise thousands of chickens, so they regrouped and fought their way out again using the sea as their inspiration. May Davidson’s tale is a decades-long tapestry of adventure, brutally hard work, lightheartedness, and risk-taking that serves to inspire any reader determined to live a rich life despite obstacles. Wayfarer A Memoir By James S. Rockefeller Jr.

AWARD WINNER

In this vividly wrought memoir, author James S. Rockefeller Jr. recalls the moments and milestones in his long, adventurous life. From his old-fashioned childhood—filled with characters and wildlife—as a grandson of William G. Rockefeller and Sarah “Elsie” Stillman, to expeditions as a young man on his Indian motorcycle and his sailboat, Mandalay, to the fateful evening on Cumberland Island, Georgia, when his heart was stolen by the luminous author Margaret Wise Brown, Rockefeller recounts his youth with wit and clarity. As he matures, his adventurous spirit takes him from Maine to Tahiti to Norway and back again. Throughout his travels, he embraces deep loss and wondrous turns of fortune, including danger, love, death, marriage, fatherhood, and— always—an enduring passion for planes, boats, and engines—a passion that leads him to establish the Owls Head Transportation Museum. A brilliant storyteller, Rockefeller writes the remembrance of a time gone by with the perspective of a 20th-century wayfarer; a voyager on the seas of time. His memoir stands as a moment “between the old and what was to come” and reveals with perspicacity and humor what he calls “this slender crack of time.” U.S. $16.95 / CAN $19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-57-5 Memoir, softcover 5.5 x 8.5, 304 pages

Glenna Johnson Smith is back with her customary combination of sass, insight, and nostalgia in Return of Old Maine Woman—a collection of essays on growing up, being female, and getting older in the northern parts of the state.

In a book of clarity and faith, Deborah Joy Corey probes the complex bonds between family, lovers, and neighbors that shaped her sense of identity, both growing up in rural New Brunswick, and as a wife and mother living on the coast of Maine.

Bert and I . . . And Other Stories From Downeast

More Bert and I

By Dodge and Bryan

Following the success of their first album, Dodge and Bryan released More Bert and I in early 1960s.

This milestone album has been digitally remastered for a special CD edition, which includes three bonus stories taken from the private 10-inch record that preceded the first commercial record. Marshall “Mike” Dodge stands undeniably as a godfather of Down East humor, bringing an energy and imagination to the stage that took him from a small Connecticut studio to his standing as the premier New England humorist of his era before he was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver BERT and I in Hawaii in 1982. He was born in New York, attended high school in New Hampshire (where he first heard Down East humor), and graduated from Yale, where he studied philosophy. It was at Yale in 1958 that he and Robert Bryan cut the first Bert and I album and launched what is now a Maine icon. Bryan helped launch Bert and I with Dodge in part by drawing upon his memories from childhood summers spent at his beloved Tunk Lake. Like Dodge, Bob was born and raised in New York and graduated from Yale.

The iconic “Bert and I” stories were written by Yale students Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan in the late 1950s and performed around campus. The two amateur storytellers soon recorded a short 10-inch album of 11 stories for friends and family, but ultimately pressed just a few hundred. However, their popularity prompted them in 1958 to record and release Bert and I … And Other Stories from Down East, considered the seminal commercial album of New England humor and storytelling. The structure, cadence, and tone they mastered established the blueprint for all who followed, while material from their stories became a part of popular culture (think: You can’t get they-ah from he-ah). Together, the duo recorded four original albums, and Dodge emerged as the premier live performer of his generation. Dodge and Bryan’s influence on storytelling and Down East humor remains unmatched, and their legacy lives on around the campfires and on stages across New England.

FICTION

Sometimes our choices can haunt us—or save us.

This Time Might Be Different Stories of Maine By Elaine Ford

This Time Might Be Different by award-winning writer Elaine Ford is a collection of fifteen stories in which deftly drawn characters contemplate difficult choices: a young girl might have coffee with a stranger; a guy might decide to rob the local laundromat; or a widow might get in the car and just keep driving. Underneath the commonplace—running into an old lover, a longstanding feud, an unspoken divorce—readers will find a trace of dark humor, a sinister underpinning, or a profound irony. Of Ford’s rural-Maine-set novel Monkey Bay, The New York Times said: “Elaine Ford’s book is reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth’s stark paintings, which use the terrain of northern New England to explore a much larger emotional landscape.” U.S. $16.95 / CAN $19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-44-5 Short Stories/Fiction, softcover 5.5 x 8.5, 320 p.

Closer All the Time

By Jim Nichols

Set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Bangor, when it was the lumber capital of the world, Hamlin tells the stories of three women brought together by the infamous brothel called Pink Chimneys. In order to survive, they must form unlikely alliances and discover the strength to overcome the odds in a culture that tries––and fails––to limit their potential.

Set in nineteenth century Maine, Abbott’s Reach is the story of a headstrong woman setting sail on her honeymoon voyage with her sea captain husband. Adventure punctuates their travels between Maine and Hawaii. This gripping novel is the sequel to Pink Chimneys, a Maine classic centered around a notorious Bangor brothel.

The Havener Sisters follows Abbott’s Reach and Pink Chimneys in Ardeana Hamlin’s collection of novels set in nineteenth-century Maine. The story follows the Havener triplets as an unexpected economic crisis gives them a new perspective on their aging lives. This well-researched novel will transport readers back in time to the dawn of suffrage and the industrial age in the Northeast.

Jim Nichols strings together the bittersweet stories of people bound by shared geography and the insular nature of small-town life delivering quick-moving, compelling storytelling with a lasting emotional wallop.

With historical detail and authenticity, Chase’s classic novel is considered one of the most distinguished books in Maine history.

The Contest

By James Hurley

Contentment Cove is a riveting story of class distinctions in a 1950s Down East village during a time of cultural change. Though the book is infused with humor, it also deals with serious issues that remain relevant today, none more compelling than the erosion of one way of Maine life and the evolution of another.

Young is a lively and moving novel of one young woman’s restlessness and struggle with life in a small Maine coastal town during the 1950s. Timeless themes still resonate as Evelyn graduates and confronts the question: What is she going to do with her life?

The Contest is a deftly interwoven tale that explores the camaraderie and sportsmanship among anglers. In this skillful tale, author James Hurley challenges the wisdom of chasing perfection, encouraging the reader instead to revel in life’s most important moments, however brief or passing.
