Winter, spring, summer, fall— this little board book has it all! Mud, Sand, and Snow By Charlotte Agell

“Mud makes me dance in the spring / I fly up to the sky on my swing.” So begins a celebration of the four seasons, as a young girl explores, with family and friends, the mud of spring, sand and wind in the summer, leaves and pumpkins in the fall, and the joys of snow in winter. Toddlers will enjoy listening to, and repeating, the easy rhyming text that invites them to use all their senses to experience the world changing around them. We feel grass tickling our toes, hear bees buzzing, and see our breath steam in the cold of winter. Author/illustrator Charlotte Agell brings her trademark light and airy watercolors to this joyful board book. U.S. $10.95 978-1-944762-63-6 Children’s board book 6x6, ages 2-6, 24 p.

Charlotte Agell is the author/illustrator of 12 books for children and young adults. Originally from Sweden, she also grew up in Canada and Hong Kong. She is the mother of two grown children. A longtime Yarmouth, Maine, public school teacher, Charlotte loves living near the coast of Maine.

NEW | MEMOIR

A life, the outdoors, and the glorious rhythms of nature.

Softcover

In Maine Essays on Life’s Seasons By John N. Cole John Cole wrote with passion about his life, the outdoors, and the glorious rhythms of nature. In Maine, like all his essays and books, draws from his lifelong partnership and his fascination with the natural world from commercial fishing in the waters off Long Island, New York, to chasing stripers in Casco Bay, Maine, to quietly observing the shifting winds that roll across the local meadow and the annual change of seasons, a ritual he finds exhilarating. “Few realities life can muster are capable of destroying the zest and richness of September and October in this northeast,” he writes. Cole has gained insight and contemplated potential lessons during his journey. He notes the changes that have come to the world and those that are coming. And he laments the basics of nature that too often pass unnoticed today, but remain important parts of our past and possibly our future. “Men cannot live without knowing... knowing which way the wind blows, which way the rain falls, how the sea surges, the land lives and the forest dies.” To do so, he says, is unnatural. Maine to Tahiti to Norway and back again. Wayfarer A Memoir By James S. Rockefeller Jr.

In this vividly wrought memoir, author James S. Rockefeller Jr. recalls the moments and milestones in his long, adventurous life. From his old-fashioned childhood—filled with characters and wildlife—as a grandson of William G. Rockefeller and Sarah “Elsie” Stillman, to expeditions as a young man on his Indian motorcycle and his sailboat, Mandalay, to the fateful evening on Cumberland Island, Georgia, when his heart was stolen by the luminous author Margaret Wise Brown, Rockefeller recounts his youth with wit and clarity. As he matures, his adventurous spirit takes him from Maine to Tahiti to Norway and back again. Throughout his travels, he embraces deep loss and wondrous turns of fortune, including danger, love, death, marriage, fatherhood, and—always—an enduring passion for planes, boats, and engines—a passion that leads him to establish the Owls Head Transportation Museum. A brilliant storyteller, Rockefeller writes the remembrance of a time gone by with the perspective of a 20th-century wayfarer; a voyager on the seas of time. His memoir stands as a moment “between the old and what was to come” and reveals with perspicacity and humor what he calls “this slender crack of time.” U.S. $16.95 / CAN $19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-57-5 Memoir, softcover 5.5 x 8.5, 304 pages

A Senator’s Eye

Celebrating Maine, Washington, and the Joys of Scraping the Windshield By Sen. Angus S. King Jr.

Sen. Angus S. King Jr.—whether hosting a bipartisan barbecue as a US Senator, traveling the country in his RV, riding the back roads of Maine on his Harley, or waxing poetically about his civil war hero Joshua Chamberlain—prides himself on having an eye and an ear for both the historic and the gloriously familiar. In recent years, he has regularly captured images of his work and daily adventures and shared those pictures on social media to provide a wonderful and rare insider’s look at the workaday life of a senator, whether he is in D.C. or his home state. From the formality of the Capitol Rotunda to a glorious sunrise off the coast of Maine, A Senator’s Eye is a fascinating collection of these informal photos, including King’s personal insights and captions. U.S. $16.95 / CAN $19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-59-9 Photography, softcover, 9 x 7.25, 120 p.

“ . . . he’s a thoughtful documenter of the Maine experience”

SEN. ANGUS S. KING JR. (I-Maine) was elected as an independent to the US Senate in 2012 filling the same seat once occupied by Edmund Muskie, George Mitchell, and Olympia Snowe. King also served two terms as the governor of Maine. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia. King considers himself a strong believer in the need for greater bipartisan dialogue and relationship building and is a proven consensus-builder who “calls ’em like he sees ’em,” putting civility and respect ahead of political ideology. After serving two terms as governor of Maine, he packed up his family in an RV and spent nearly six months circumnavigating the United States. His first book, Governor’s Travels: How I Left Politics, Learned to Back Up a Bus, and Found America, detailed his trip. He has five children and lives in Brunswick, Maine, with his wife, Mary. In his free time, he enjoys exploring the Maine outdoors—either on his Harley or with his family in their camper.

Written by Jakob Crane Illustrated by Timothy Decker

Cheerful Ruby and her shy friend Eleanor couldn’t be more different. Ruby has lived her whole life in Paris, New Hampshire. Eleanor’s family is from Sri Lanka. But these best friends share one thing: they both have impossible dreams.

Fourteen years after the Salem Witch Trials, one accuser wrote a letter of apology for helping to send 24 people to their deaths. This is her story. This graphic novel is a searing and uncommon portrayal of an untold aspect of the trials.

Billy Laird enlists in the Union Army, but has no idea what lies ahead. He is ill prepared for the training and fighting, but survives with help from friends. When he is sent to a different unit, he runs off and meets a runaway slave, Elijah.Together, the two make their way north to their fates.

Lea Wait skillfully draws on the lives of real people in Maine’s history to tell this story of three young adults touched by the Civil War and the tension it brings, forcing them into adulthood before they may be ready.

Hauling By Hand

The Life and Times of a Maine Island By Dean Lunt

Hauling by Hand tells the remarkable story of Frenchboro, Long Island, which sits eight miles off the Maine coast, making it one of the state’s most remote outposts. It is one of only fourteen Maine islands still supporting a year-round community, while only a century ago, there were some 300 such communities. The island’s roots were set in the 1820s by the Lunt family and a small band of pioneers who together carved an island community from the spruce and granite shores. Fueled by the shipping and fishing industries, Long Island evolved from outpost to vibrant offshore port before economic changes transformed the island into a hardscrabble turn-of-the-century fishing village where nearly 200 residents scratched a living from depleted fishing stocks and rocky soil. Today, the scenic town of Frenchboro has a population of nearly fifty people, but it has neither a general store, nor tourist hotel, nor daily ferry service. Instead there is a village, a soul, and a way of life. U.S. $24.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-23-0

Whatever it Takes

Seven Decades of True Love, Hard Work, and No Regrets By May Davidson For nearly seventy years, May and Jim Davidson shared an unbreakable love of Maine and a relentless drive to do “whatever it takes” to achieve success and happiness. They fell in love as teenagers, built their first house using twenty dollars worth of lumber, and set about creating the life of their dreams. They soon learned that optimism alone wouldn’t sustain them. To make ends meet, they lobstered, fished, farmed sheep, started a lobster trap sawmill, and crisscrossed the country as long haul truckers. They eventually collapsed into debt and uncertainty while trying to raise thousands of chickens, so they regrouped and fought their way out again using the sea as their inspiration. May Davidson’s tale is a decades-long tapestry of adventure, brutally hard work, lightheartedness, and risk-taking that serves to inspire any reader determined to live a rich life despite obstacles. Trappers, foresters, lumbermen, woods folk, and wild animals, as well as frozen dogsled runs, hunting, fishing, simple joys, and awe-inspiring beauty, form the backdrop for Hamlin’s remarkable adventure.

Smith offers a nostalgic look at her childhood on the coast and her observations of life under the big sky and among the rolling potato fields of her beloved Aroostook County, where she has lived for nearly seven decades.

Glenna Johnson Smith is back with her customary combination of sass, insight, and nostalgia in Return of Old Maine Woman—a collection of essays on growing up, being female, and getting older in the northern parts of the state.

In a book of clarity and faith, Deborah Joy Corey probes the complex bonds between family, lovers, and neighbors that shaped her sense of identity, both growing up in rural New Brunswick, and as a wife and mother living on the coast of Maine.

Storyteller John McDonald delivers a mix of educational and hilarious fun facts about the Pine Tree State, including, of course, more than a few wicked funny stories. This humorous book also features illustrations by Mark Scott Ricketts that add extra spice to the salty tales.

McDonald’s “guidebook” offers tips to tourists and tries to help them better “understand” the glorious state of Maine, touching on its rich history, its variable weather, and its unique vocabulary. But this book is not just for flatlanders, it’s also great for natives and anyone else looking to laugh.

Culling from his years of Maine storytelling and from his two wildy popular books, A Moose and a Lobster Walk into a Bar and Down the Road a Piece: A Storyteller’s Guide to Maine, humorist John McDonald has selected and presented his best work for this hilarious CD.

Sometimes our choices can haunt us—or save us.

This Time Might Be Different Stories of Maine By Elaine Ford

This Time Might Be Different by award-winning writer Elaine Ford is a collection of fifteen stories in which deftly drawn characters contemplate difficult choices: a young girl might have coffee with a stranger; a guy might decide to rob the local laundromat; or a widow might get in the car and just keep driving. Underneath the commonplace—running into an old lover, a longstanding feud, an unspoken divorce—readers will find a trace of dark humor, a sinister underpinning, or a profound irony. Of Ford’s rural-Maine-set novel Monkey Bay, The New York Times said: “Elaine Ford’s book is reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth’s stark paintings, which use the terrain of northern New England to explore a much larger emotional landscape.” U.S. $16.95 / CAN $19.95 ISBN: 978-1-944762-44-5 Short Stories/Fiction, softcover 5.5 x 8.5, 320 p.

The Havener Sisters

Closer All the Time

By Jim Nichols

Set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Bangor, when it was the lumber capital of the world, Hamlin tells the stories of three women brought together by the infamous brothel called Pink Chimneys. In order to survive, they must form unlikely alliances and discover the strength to overcome the odds in a culture that tries––and fails––to limit their potential.

Set in nineteenth century Maine, Abbott’s Reach is the story of a headstrong woman setting sail on her honeymoon voyage with her sea captain husband. Adventure punctuates their travels between Maine and Hawaii. This gripping novel is the sequel to Pink Chimneys, a Maine classic centered around a notorious Bangor brothel.

The Havener Sisters follows Abbott’s Reach and Pink Chimneys in Ardeana Hamlin’s collection of novels set in nineteenth-century Maine. The story follows the Havener triplets as an unexpected economic crisis gives them a new perspective on their aging lives. This well-researched novel will transport readers back in time to the dawn of suffrage and the industrial age in the Northeast.

Jim Nichols strings together the bittersweet stories of people bound by shared geography and the insular nature of small-town life delivering quick-moving, compelling storytelling with a lasting emotional wallop.

By James Hurley

Follow the life of the strong and independent Mary Peters, from her adventurous life at sea with her family at age nine to her later years as she comes to terms with the hometown that is almost unrecognizable from the vibrant seafaring town it was when she left.

Silas Crockett traces life on the Maine coast through four generations of a seafaring family, and recounts the sweeping changes that took place on the Maine coast during the 19th and early 20th centuries. With historical detail and authenticity, Chase’s classic novel is considered one of the most distinguished books in Maine history.

Contentment Cove is a riveting story of class distinctions in a 1950s Down East village during a time of cultural change. Though the book is infused with humor, it also deals with serious issues that remain relevant today, none more compelling than the erosion of one way of Maine life and the evolution of another.

The Contest is a deftly interwoven tale that explores the camaraderie and sportsmanship among anglers. In this skillful tale, author James Hurley challenges the wisdom of chasing perfection, encouraging the reader instead to revel in life’s most important moments, however brief or passing.
