Our wonderful security/maintenance man, Rodney Ochoa, has created a wiffle ball playing field just mauka of the elementary playground. His vision is to teach our ES and MS students how to play a variety of bat-and-ball games. Rodney has a background as a baseball and softball player and a love for the related sports. The area is partially fenced (see photo) and he is asking our ‘ohana to check around for leftover wooden fencing — 3’ (minimum) lengths of 1X — to donate to the cause. For the backstop, he needs 2X12 or 2X10, 6’ or longer. Please drop off donations in the front parking lot near Rodney’s house, next to the mowers. If you have any questions about what, exactly, we need, please call Rodney at 634-3309. Mahalo!

The North Shore after school bus route includes a bus stop at Kilauea Elementary School in Kilauea Town. Recent safety concerns were raised by Kilauea School that are equally familiar and important to us on our own campus. Please keep in mind that all Island School rules on behavior and traffic safety apply to our parents and students while on Kilauea School property. We have handed out notices to our bus-riding students in hopes the issues will be resolved and we can continue to receive the good will of Kilauea School. If you have any questions please call Mike at the Office.

No Name-Calling Week
“Celebrating kindess while working to create safe schools free of name-calling, bullying and bias.”
Next week marks the 10th anniversary of National No-Name Calling Week. No-Name Calling Week was inspired by The Misfits, a young adult novel by James Howe. The story is of four best friends who are constantly teased based on their physical appearance, intelligence, sexual orientation and expression of gender. During student council elections they create the No-Name Party and campaign to end all types of namecalling. One idea of theirs is a No-Name Calling Day. This idea influenced the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publications to form the No Name-Calling Week Coalition, organizing NoName Calling Week in schools across the country. Our Student Government, inspired by this national event, has declared next week to be No Name-Calling Week. Starting Tuesday, January 21, students in PK-12 are invited to participate as follows:
Doing something kind for someone can be a simple way to make a new friend.
Tuesday, Jan. 21
Do Something Kind for Someone Day: open the door for a friend, say something complimentary, lend an ear to someone in need, help solve a problem, share a smile.
Wednesday, Jan. 22
Stomp Out Bullying Day: wear your favorite boots to school to remind everyone that we can band together against bullying.
Thursday, Jan. 23
Hugs & Kisses Day: give someone a hug (but be sure they want one). Student Government members will pass out Hershey’s Kisses.
Friday
Team Up Against Bullying Day: students in MS & HS are invited to dress as twins, triplets or wear a team jersey to remind everyone that we’re part of a team. Elementary students are organizing their own Spirit Week the following week that will emphasize Anti-Bullying, so they should save their dressing up until then.
