I.S. Chronicles
EIGHTH GRADE TRANSITION – As a celebration of their completion of middle school, and readiness for high school, eighth graders will spend the day tomorrow on a snorkel trip along the Na Pali Coast.
Liam Buchanan and Kaeo Rezentes on horseback during the 6th grade boys trip to Hanchett Ranch last Friday. SIXTH GRADE – The 6th grade class had a wonderful retreat day at Hanchett Ranch on last Thursday, for the girls, and last Friday, for the boys. They learned about the parts of a horse, the horse’s riding gear, and how a horse “thinks” before they were even allowed to mount their horse to practice the skills of riding. They also learned how to pound taro root to make pa‘a‘ai, then how to use the pa‘i‘ai to make mochi taro balls — yummy! The staff at Hanchett Ranch were terrific, the kids learned a lot, and they have wonderful memories they will never forget. A great bonding time!
famous characters. Both projects will be performed on Wednesday during class. The class will have their “Agatha Rex” cast party on Friday, June 6, at Lihu‘e Lanes.
DRAMA – Middle School students are working on two final projects in drama class. They are creating short skits based on a central object they have chosen. In one, an ancient and valuable leg bone is the object of a hunt. Another takes place under the sea, where an evil sea goddess steals a magical singing cup from the mermaid. In another, four girls find out they all have the same boyfriend. A food fight is the highlight of the fourth skit, and a magic carrot sets the scene for a Jack and the Beanstalk type of story. Their other project is to learn and perform short monologues spoken by some of Shakespeare’s most
KINDERGARTEN – The Kindergarten class is spending the night on the North Shore for their Annual Camp Naue camping trip. Included in their itinerary is a tour of the camp grounds, relay races, crafts and games, swimming at the beach, a scavenger hunt, a camp fire and more. We wish the class a safe and fun trip!
SENIOR UPDATE – Students are sometimes put on a “wait list” for a college or university, meaning that they met all admissions criteria, but there was not enough room to admit the student on the first go-around. After all accepted students respond - the college or university may have a few spots to give to wait-listed students. Kalena Wong was recently notified of her acceptance to Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. Also, Makali‘i Pratt was accepted to University of San Diego. Both had been accepted to other universities, but hoped to get their first pick. Their patience paid off! Go to page 4 to see what the rest of the seniors have chosen. Congratulations! FIRST GRADE –The 1st grade class went on a field trip to the Makauwahi Cave Reserve on Tuesday. They saw 40-year-old African tortoises, stalactites and popcorn formations on the ceiling of the cave and hiked. The students learned about the lo‘i, the flora and fauna of the area, the blind spider in the caves, and the birds that have become extinct (these used to be as big as turkeys).
DO DROP INN – Mr. Dean is leading a camping trip tomorrow evening on campus for Do Drop Inn families. They will be sleeping in tents and having a blast!
First grader Ashley Chun feeds a 40year -old tortoise, which eats invasive plants, during her class’ field trip to Maukawahi Cave Reserve at Maha‘ulepu on Tuesday.
