Sarah James has been accepted at Concordia University Irvine, in Irvine, CA, and University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Kathleen Bissell has been accepted at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA, Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle, WA, and San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA. COMMUNITY SERVICE – This Saturday, February 4, Island School’s Junior Restoration Team will participate in an educational service project at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens facility at Lawai. This is open to high school students, each of whom will receive 4+ hours of community service towards graduation requirements. The group will work in the Lawai nursery, tour the spice gardens and canoe gardens, and receive Hawaiian cultural education. They will meet at the back gate of the Lawai gardens at 8:30 a.m.. MAKE A SCENE AT ISLAND SCHOOL: Saturday, Feb. 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Hall. PAID ENVIRONMENTAL INTERNSHIPS – The Youth Conservation Corps is accepting applications for the HYCC Summer Program. Applicants must be 17-20 years of age. Members will learn about natural resource management by taking part in service projects, field trips, and presentations by the various conservation and government organizations. Members will work with experts in various fields and gain life skills that will aid them in school and beyond. The program runs from June 11 - July 20, 2012. This is an AmeriCorps position. Participants will receive a $1,132 educational award and, if eligible, can apply for three college credits through University of Hawaii. Possible travel to Kaho’olawe. Island School Celebrates 35

Thirty-five years ago, in 1977, in a small run-down building in Kealia, Island School opened its doors for business for the first time. It was January 24, 1977, and 12 students and six teachers formed a circle on the floor of the “Main Room” for Morning Circle. They stretched, made announcements, and sang a song; then were excused to go to their first class.

Student leaders will describe the community service projects (ho‘okupu) that each class will perform that day. These are described below.

PK: is creating sea life artwork to be on display on the 4th floor Classes were combined in “clusters:” grades kindergarten and and lobby at Wilcox Hospital and first graders, elementary (grades 2 then litter clean up on campus; & 3); intermediate (grades 4 & 5), K & 3rd: cleaning up around Puhi junior high (6, 7 & 8).
