preparing for the county track meet, scheduled for April 28 and April 29, and the Hershey meet scheduled for May 26. Interested students are invited to join the high school track team for workouts starting Tuesday, Feb. 21. In addition, 8th graders who are considering running cross country and/or playing soccer as freshman next year are encouraged to come to HS practices. The track team meets M-F in front of the Wilcox Gym at 3 p.m. There are usually no practices on Thursdays because those are the days of the KIF track meets. Practice usually ends by 4:30. Accrediation Visit - A Positive Experience Visiting Committee presented their report to the staff, faculty and board yesterday after school.

Accreditation is a process whereby the programs and activities of an educational institution are evaluated by qualified outside agencies. In Island School’s case, these agencies are the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The purpose is to validate the degree to which the institution is providing the services for which it exists. The longest term of accreditation is six years, though it may be shorter if there are areas needing significant improvement. This is the fifth time that Island School has been accredited. Each time it has received a six-year term. Steve Repsher, head of school for Sacramento Country Day School, led the five-person visiting team that spent the past 3½ days at Island School. Also on the committee were: Amy Kimura, Ass’t Principal, Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama campus; Sarah Schoenfeld, Curriculum Coordinator, Kanuikapono Learning Center; Leslie Witten, Educational Technology Support Specialist, Island Pacific Academy; and Pieper Toyama, WASC Member and Headmaster, Pacific Buddhist Academy.

Their report consisted of commendations and recommendations for each section in the self study. Mr. Repsher began the presentation by congratulating everyone for their passion toward education and their love of children. Commendations emphasized the conscious integration of our efforts, from the Board of Directors to administration, faculty, and staff, to students and their families. As pointed out by the team, these efforts are aligned with the school’s mission that “students become life-long learners and contributing members of society.”

Before arriving at Island School, the team read our 124 page “Self Study.” This was written and compiled by our teachers and administrators. Island School teachers Jeff Kozak and Cristy Peeren coordinated this effort that included a discussion about our philosophy and governance, various school programs and activities, and information about the community of the school and its facilities. Once on campus, the team compared what was in the Self Study with observations. Its conclusions were presented to Island School board members, administrators, faculty and staff on Wednesday afternoon.

Among the recommendations that will be considered in the months ahead are: strengthening our efforts at fundraising while maintining a clear focus on our mission and the need for adequate resources; keeping pace with advances in technology and developing ways these can be applied to education; providing an even more robust staff development program; and exploring ways to introduce foreign language into the elementary grades. Based on the visiting team’s findings, a final term of accreditation of up to six years will be determined by HAIS and WASC, and will be issued later this spring.
