The School Office will be open during Spring Break from 8am - 4pm. Friday, April 6, 2012 - CLOSED due to Good Friday Holiday.

May Day Lu‘au Tickets On Sale After Spring Break

Island School’s May Day celebration is right around the proverbial corner - Friday, May 4th. Every student will have a hand in pulling off this annual event, from dancing, to acting as emcee, to playing in the band, to setting up and cleaning up in the gymnasium. Our May Day Lu‘au in the Main Hall follows the performance. Lu‘au tickets are available for sale after spring break at $10 per person. The menu includes: kalua pork, chicken long rice, rice, macaroni salad, lomi salmon and rice pudding. Deadline to purchase is April 25. Thunder Chicken Coffee Available Year Round

Kaua’ibots would like to thank all of our school families who have supported their fundraising efforts by purchasing Thunder Chicken coffee. Due to popular demand, it will be available year-round in the front Office. Many thanks to Mary Pratt of Lappert’s for creating this delicious blend.

After School Practices for Elementary Track Team

Students ages 5 - 14 (grades K - 8) are encouraged to meet after school on Wednesdays. They should report to Weinberg Gym at 2:45 and may be picked up at 4:00. This is in preparation for the Mayor’s Age Group Track Meet on April 28 and 29, at Vidinha Stadium. More students are needed in all age groups. Family Work Day Coming Up

In honor of Arbor Day, we will be organizing an Island School Family Workday on Saturday, April 21, from 8:00 - noon. Mark your calendars

Click on the Calendar tab on our website. and plan on bringing shovels, trowels, wheel barrows, gardening gloves & tools and your entire family. There are jobs for everyone. Lunch will be provided.

Host a Student from Sweden Next Year

CCI (Center for Cultural Interchange) has sent us a request to host a student who would enroll as a senior at Island School next fall. His name is Jakob, and he loves sailing, skiing, wind surfing and outdoor activities. His English speaking skills are very good. Portraits Distributed Today

Portrait packages for students in grades PK-8 who had their Spring Portraits taken on March 14, will be distributed today. Parents who wish to purchase any of the portrait sheets should follow the instructions in the packets. Spring portraits are NOT prepaid. If you choose not to order the the package, they must be returned to Alice’s office by April 9. Mahalo for your continued cooperation!

Sra. Wong’s students practice their Spanish at Mariachi’s. SPANISH – Students in 8th grade Spanish went to breakfast together this week so they could practice ordering food in Spanish. This completes their study of Oaxaca, Mexico. CHINESE – Island School’s Chinese language students will host a pot-luck luncheon for three visiting college students from China at Dr. Barale’s home on Friday March 30th from 11:20 AM to 2 PM. It should be a wonderful opportunity to interact with young people from China, practice some Chinese and learn more about China’s society and culture. ENGLISH – Eighth grade English students have begun a poetry recitation project, integrating skills acquired during Trimester I’s Public Speaking curriculum with Trimester III’s focus on fiction. Students were presented with poems by a variety of poets including Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, John Donne, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman, Shel Silverstein, and William Shakespeare, and asked to select one for memorization and recitation. Students will be graded on a variety of elements of the recitation including projection, voice quality, expression, and interpretation. SOCIAL STUDIES – 7th Western Civ classes just conducted their “Renaissance Art Gallery” simulation. This event included viewing twelve master works of art from the Italian Renaissance. In preparation for their research papers, students were to demonstrate their understanding between objective and subjective reasoning by distinguishing

ROBOTICS – The Kaua‘ibots took their bot, Thunder Chicken #2465, to O‘ahu last weekend to the FIRST Robotics Tournament. Our team advanced to the quarter finals and had a superb showing on the last day of competition. A total of 38 teams competed in the Hawai‘i Regional, which turned into an international regional with the participation of a team from Taipei. Kaua‘ibots was awarded the Gracious Professionalism award which celebrates outstanding sportsmanship and continuous gracious professionalism in the heat of competition, both on and off the playing field. Thirty students and sixteen mentors represented the island of Kaua’i. Our team received a surprise visit from Senator Ron Kouchi who, lthough he was not able to take in the competition due to scheduled meetings, stopped by the Stan Sheriff early on Friday. He visited the pit area and met with our pit crew and later joined the rest of the team for a photo op in our cheering section. Kelly Culliney and Lauren Claypoole were both admitted to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Lauren was also admitted to Occidental College in Los Angeles, California and she was awarded a $5000

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Students in first grade learned some hip-hop steps from fifth graders, Mao Fukada, Lexi Warnock and Maria Grigorova.
