Healthy Lunch Program Adjustments

Our healthy lunch program has been getting positive reviews from students, teachers and parents. The price of offering our delicious and nutritious homemade lunches is far higher than what is being collected. Parents should have received an email from Mike Goto announcing the need to increase prices. Many great suggestions have been offered, one of which is to allow a Friday only option on Pizza Day. Beginning next trimester, this option will be added to the M-F and MWF options. Please call the front Office by November 18, to make the necessary payment arrangements for trimester 2.

Science Olympiad Middle School Science Olympiad team forming for first time

The Science Olympiad has been in existence for 28 years and is one of the premiere science competitions in the nation. Competitions take place in all 50 states and over 6,200 teams compete nationally. Their web site provides more details (www.soinc.org). Last year the high school participated in Science Olympiad for the first time with Dr. Kozak as their coach. The high school team took first place in the Kaua‘i County regional competition, which made them eligible for the state competition. The team traveled to O‘ahu in March of last year and placed fifth place in the state out of 12 high schools! Check out the video, which shows our team in the competition: www.hsso.org.

Last year’s HS Science Olympiad team show off their first place trophy.

There can be up to 15 members on one team. The events cover the spectrum of scientific disciplines, including areas such as physics, chemistry, biology, geology, mathematics, engineering, forensics, and ecology. There is no cost to enroll.

The Regional Competition will be held on Monday January 16th (MLK day) at Kaua‘i Community College (KCC). Our faculty advisors, Jeff Kozak, Joe Corbo and Kate Mink, will meet with students after school to prepare for the competition.

This year, in addition to the high school team, Joe Corbo is forming a Science Olympiad team for middle school students. During the Regional Competition our new team will compete against middle schools from Waimea and Kapa‘a. The high school will compete against Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i and Waimea high schools.

A meeting for interested high school and middle school students and their parents will be held after school on Monday, November 14, at 3:00 p.m. At this meeting, a schedule will be made for teams to meet. Parents are welcome to volunteer their time to help coach teams.
