THE WELCOME COMMITTEE The Welcome Committee is delighted to welcome Sue Clark to our group, replacing Frankie Lindon as the volunteer in charge of birthdays and anniversaries for our community. She will take over the database, keeping it updated with new residents as well as deleting residents no longer residing

here. We are grateful for Frankie’s outstanding work keeping these records. If you see her around the park, please give her a pat on the back and a big thank you for a job well done! The Welcome Committee is composed entirely of volunteers who donate many hours to greet new

residents and inform them of the various aspects of our community as well as to gather information about them and keep important records up to date. This information is used to publish the Tara Woods Resident Directory and inform residents via The Columns of changes of addresses or phone numbers

and of our neighbors’ birthdays and anniversaries. Our Orientation for New Residents is generally held on the first Saturday of each month and newcomers are encouraged to attend and receive a packet of information and lots of pointers about our community.

Will Your Money Last as Long as You Do? What do your fellow citizens fear most? Almost half of them – 49% – are most afraid of running out of money during retirement, a higher percentage than the 44% whose chief concern is failing health, according to a recent survey by Aegon Center for Longevity and other groups. What steps can you take to help ensure your money will last as long as you do? Here are a few suggestions:

 Estimate your longevity. None of us can say for sure how long we’ll live. However, you can make some educated guesses based on your health and family history. And once you do have at least a ballpark figure, you can then determine about how much money you may need to last the rest of your lifetime. A word of caution: It’s probably going to be more than you think. Health care costs alone can run into the hundreds of thousands, even with Medicare.  Determine when you’ll retire. Your retirement age will have a big impact on how long your money can last. The longer you work, the more you can contribute to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and 401(k). Plus, if you have health insurance through work, you should be able to cover some of the out of pocket health care costs you’d normally have to pay if you’re retired.  Invest as much as you can in your retirement. During your working years, contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. And every time you get a raise, try to increase the amount you put into your employer’s plan.

 Protect yourself from long-term care costs. If you’re fortunate, you’ll never needany type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health care provider. Still, there are no guarantees, and long-term care expenses can be big enough to threaten your retirement savings. The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is about $100,000 per year, while a home health aide costs about $50,000 per year, according to the insurance company Genworth. Medicare typically pays just a small portion of these amounts, so you may want to purchase a long-term care insurance policy that will pay for qualified long-term care costs. Or you might consider a “hybrid” policy, which combines long-term care protection with life insurance. So, if you never needed long term care, your hybrid policy would pay a death benefit to your beneficiary, but if you did need the care, your policy would pay benefits toward those expenses.  Choose an appropriate withdrawal rate. During your retirement, you’ll need to withdraw money from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts. But you’ll want to avoid taking out too much each year, especially during the early years of your retirement. It’s important to establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your needs, taking into account your age, sources of income, lifestyle and other factors.

The thought of running out of money during retirement is scary indeed – but by making smart choices, you can go a long way toward alleviating this fear and enjoying your life as a retiree. HEALTH FAIR The Tara Woods Health Fair at the Clubhouse was a rousing success. Residents could obtain information about everything from their head to their toes and parts in between. Hilda Dienes, Dave Lindon and Barbara Werner-Lubich did a wonderful job of organizing the event and making sure that as much information as possible was available to the residents of Tara Woods regarding their health and well-being. Approximately 34 participants made themselves available from 8:00 AM until noon on Tuesday, January

14th, to answer questions and provide helpful information. Those participants were extremely knowledgeable and fielded questions regarding their area of expertise. Attendees collected pamphlets, business cards and trinkets that were offered at each table in bags conveniently provided at the entrance to the fair. Many residents took advantage of the opportunity to garner info that may significantly impact their health now or in the future.

Much appreciation is extended to Frankie Lindon and all of the volunteers she organized who lent a hand before, during and after the health fair. Working together they helped to bring about a very successful morning. A hearty thank you goes out to those who donated blood at the Blood Mobile in the north parking lot of the Clubhouse.

Greetings all! YOU DID IT!! As we were told during this past week, FMO created “such a ruckus” about HB 1339, [and previously about SB 818] FMHA was willing to find some common ground with us. Senator Hooper, the bill sponsor, had previously said he intended to FORCE the parties to the table to find common ground…and that has occurred this week. • Are we completely happy? No. [And neither are they!!] • Is the legislation improved? Yes!! It is so greatly and much improved!! And, so…GOOD JOB AND BIG THANKS to all of you who engaged the Legislators. Below please find some of the issues we raised (in black) and the outcome (in red). You will see how effective you have been. Our Legislative Counsel has been told by so many Legislative Staffers that your courtesy, articulation of the issues, and passion have been persuasive in the debate. • Removes the right for a home buyer to assume a lease and receive the initial prospectus that goes with the lot. No, No, No!! Changed as follows: • A home buyer may continue to assume the remainder of an assumable lease…keeps current law. • A home buyer will have the option to receive the seller’s prospectus or a new prospectus • Permits adding an unlimited number of units to a park with no requirement to increase or add amenities for the new units. This would dramatically affect our pool, clubhouse, exercise area, or game area. Changed so expansion of more than 15% requires increasing facilities or amenities within reasonable time frame. • Permits amending the current prospectus without disclosure to homeowners about expanding the size of the park. Changed to require amending prospectus when expanding the park to include new lots. • Requires a home buyer to make changes prior to occupying the home. Resales may become impossible.

Deleted from the bill which takes the pressure off the resale. Homeowners must continue to maintain the community standard as established in the prospectus. • Removes the requirement for certified or registered mail if there is an eviction notice. Deleted from the bill! Current law unchanged. • Prohibits an experienced negotiator or attorney from attending the negotiating committee meeting. Deleted from the bill! Current law unchanged. • The bill required changes to the requirements and obligations of homeowners when there is a lot rent dispute. (Timeframes, deposits, and access to funds deposited into the court registry) Deleted from the bill! Current law unchanged. • Language was added to create a strict prohibition to prevent the park owner from passing on to homeowners’ taxes in an amount in excess of what he/she actually paid to the tax collector. Taken from Senate Bill 1022: • Requires the park owner to send the change in use eviction notice to the Division of Condominiums, Timeshare, and Mobile Homes and the Division must then send the notice to the Florida Mobile Home Relocation Corporation. This will help avoid rumor and hearsay about park closings. ADDED TO THE BILL • The amendment makes changes to the HOA statutes that are specific for mobile and manufactured home communities. These disputes are between the homeowners’ association and a community resident. This amendment improves the areas of elections of officers or directors, and the inspection and photocopying of official records. It is important to note that these changes apply to Chapter 723 homeowner associations only. ADDED TO THE BILL Your involvement and engagement have been a best example of a GRASSROOTS effort. We must continue to build on this political activity!

Our match on January 23rd, marked the end of the first half of our tennis league season. We had a home game against Six Lakes and we again won all 6 sets. We finished the first half in first place in our league of eight teams. January 30th, marked the beginning of the second half of our season, so we are now playing each of the teams for a second time. We played at home against Herons Glen and we won 5 of the 6 sets – the same result we had when we played them earlier in the season. On February 6th, we traveled all the way over to Lake Fairways who are presently in second place in the league. When we played them earlier in the season we won 4 sets and lost 2. This time we split the match with 3 sets won and 3 sets lost. One of the sets was an exciting, come-from-behind battle which resulted in a tie-breaker, which we unfortunately lost. It was back-andforth in the tie-breaker score, with Lake Fairways prevailing with 8 points to our 6. I am happy to report that the Tara Woods Angels remain in first place with an impressive 8 sets advantage over the second place team. Linda Engel

SWIFT INFO Here we go with the final month of our ladies SWIFT tennis league. It’s been a great season with a lot of fun and great tennis. We have had great support at our matches from a lot of people in the community. Thank you for that. March 5th and March 12th will be our final two matches. March 5th we will host Sabal Springs and March 12th, we will be at Six Lakes. Following that will be a Round Robin with the other teams and then our annual banquet – lots of fun. We have set a tentative date for Tuesday, March 17th, to have our Tara Woods ladies tennis meeting. If you have any interest in joining the team, please plan to attend. If we have enough interest, we’ll vote to have one or two teams. If you’d like to be the captain or nominate someone to be captain, that will be voted on as well. It’s a good day for discussions and decisions from the team. The final date and time for the meeting will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board by Tuesday, March 3rd. Hope to see everyone at our final two matches and, again, thank you for all of your wonderful support. Pam Ahlers

MEN’S LEAGUE White Team – Stallions Just a reminder: We, the White League, changed our Tuesday start time to 1:00 PM instead of 1:30 PM. On February 4th we played against Lake Fairways and split the sets 3 and 3. So far, we are tied for third place, but the standings are very close. We have four teams within 3 points of each other. Will keep you posted. Cheers, Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers I can’t believe I am writing the March issue of The Columns already – where did the time go? Our Tigers are into the second half of the season and adjusting to each player’s ability.

Game Play update: On January 16th we played our other Tara Woods team, the Mustangs. The teams seemed to be reasonably matched; it was a home game for the Tigers. Result: Tigers 2 and Mustangs 4 with two tie-breakers played. On January 23rd it was an away game against the Six Lakes Raptors. Result: Tigers 2 and Raptors 4 with one tie-breaker won by the Tigers. We enjoyed the Raptors’ hospitality, as we had refreshments at a team member’s residence. January 30th was another away game with the Lake Fairways Cougars. Our teams were pretty evenly matched. As a special note, three of the Cougars players are 83 years old – what an inspiration! Result: Tigers 3 and Cougars 3. Our Court 2 players were very competitive. February 6th was our last away game before our first bye of the season. The game was played against the Herons Glen Yard Dogs. The Tigers always enjoy playing on clay courts; however, this day became a real challenge. With 20-30 mph wind gusts, including adjusting to playing on the clay surface, this made for exciting play. Result: Tigers 1 and Yard Dogs 5, with one lost tie-breaker. A welcome discussion over a few pitchers was enjoyed by all. A special note: Tennis is a great fit for seniors of any fitness or skill level looking to play a fun, competitive sport! Tennis is a very popular sport for many seniors, and for a good reason. It can be not only

extremely healthy, but it’s also a sport that seniors can compete in and master. If you are interested, please stop by at the courts. Al Dion / Mike O’Hearn Blue Team – Mustangs We are now at the halfway point in the season. We had a very competitive match with our other Blue Team, the Tigers. The Mustangs won the match 4 sets to 2. The following week we played at home against the first place team from Pine Lakes; we lost all 6 sets. As I mentioned in previous articles, the other teams in our league are much more competitive. We are currently in third place in the league standings. Mike Renzulli ROUND ROBIN We had our second Round Robin of the season on Sunday, January 26th. There were 17 players competing in 16 matches. Many players showed their playing skills and had fun playing with and against their fellow Tennis Association members. After the matches, we all enjoyed a Verandahcooked Buddy Burger dinner party. We have to thank all the many people who helped make the event a success: Mary & Ed Sandre set up the courtside snacks and Gail & Tom, Kathy & Roger, and Judy worked on the BBQ dinner set-up. We also want to give a special thank you to Gail for devising a new pairings board to display the match setups. I also want to thank Al Dion for helping match the players. The Tennis Association monthly meeting was held after our dinner. Future club activities were discussed and planned. We must remind everyone that Association elections will be held in the coming days. All members are expected to offer their input and efforts to continue all the future club activities. Our last Round Robin of the season is Sunday, March 22nd. The sign-up sheet will be posted in early March. Be sure to sign up to play so you can enjoy this fun social tennis event. NEW IMAGE CHORUS If you are like me and like to plan ahead, please leave the evening of Saturday, April 4th, open. On that night your friends and neighbors will be in the Clubhouse enjoying the songs that the New Image Chorus will be singing. Of course, you’re invited to join in. It’s hard to believe that all these months of practicing will result in a most entertaining evening for the community.

The Chorus is always looking for new members who want to have some fun on Monday afternoons from September to April. There are very strict requirements and only the best of the best are selected. Just kidding. All you have to do is show up. It’s not too late to join for this year. Most of the songs you have probably heard and already know. Who knows, you may even like it? You may

wind up singing those songs in the shower. See you Monday at 12:30 PM. Stu Berman

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…you’ve seen the activity in the Clubhouse; and you’ve seen the set, so now is your chance to see for yourself what it is all about. On the 13th and 14th of March you will all get the opportunity to laugh, boo and cheer on your fellow Tara-ites as you watch from the audience – the Entertainer’s production of “She Was Only Marginally Modest”. This is a very funny and fastmoving play set in the woods of Colorado in 1883 or ‘84 (depends on who you listen to). Speaking of listening to, you will hear the sound of the moose running amok and see violence like never before on our stage. I suggest you not sit too close or the moose just might find you too. The facts are: Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th in the Clubhouse. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the show starting at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $8.00 per person and available at Saturday Morning Coffee, before Bingo on Tuesday night or at the door. The Entertainers do not allow food or drink into the Clubhouse for these performances.

SPITTIN’ IMAGE

Any questions on this, please ask for Pat Dunning. We have theater seating and the front row is available if you need to be closer. There will be ushers at the door if you need help. We also have the regular tables behind the theater seats, but no food or drink is allowed into any of these shows. This year we have many new faces on stage; they could use your encouragement and applause. We will ask for audience participation this year. This is a good time to cheer on the good guys and boo the villain. Make sure you bring your enthusiasm with you. A reminder to all interested in the Entertainers, our next meeting will be: Saturday, March 21st. “You need three things in the theatre: the play, the actors, and the audience; each must give something.” Kenneth Haigh Pat Dunning, Stage Manager for the Entertainers 239-599-4490 pdunning46@gmail.com

Sound & Lighting presented an evening of music and hilarity at the Clubhouse on Sunday night, January 19th , with the identical twin duo Spittin’ Image. Attendees gathered in theater and cabaret seating at 7:00 PM and the laughter began shortly thereafter. Who was more entertaining: the Swabb brothers, Blain and Brian, or some of our Tara Woods residents? It was hard to decide. Polly Brown gave a very brief introduction, and then the twins began their show by answering a question that they often receive: “Who is the oldest?” Blain is 26 minutes older than Brian and we learned all about their 96-year-old, gun-toting momma. Brian came down from the stage multiple times during the performance and chose several members of the audience to participate in their antics on stage and among the crowd. We learned that Bart Leneker was a utility worker and played a little guitar in his day and sang. He teamed up with Spittin’ Image and crooned a tune to the crowd’s delight. Bill Bennett was a truck driver before he retired, and John D’Amico was an accountant.

That trio had everyone laughing until they cried. Thanks for being such good sports, guys. Polly Brown accompanied the twins on tambourine for one number. “Mustang Sally” was sung and accompanied by Roch Beliveau, and two other attendees* on tambourines. Nancy Morley, Linda Francey and Linda Stolz were chosen from the audience because they were wearing animal print and they served as the back-up vocalists on that song - “Ride, Sally, Ride!” The remainder of the audience sang along. Ginny Hundertpfund, 92 years old, was singled out to take the twins home after the performance. The dialogue between Ginny and the guys throughout the evening was the highlight of the show. It was difficult to discern just who was flirting with whom! If you ever have the opportunity to take in a Spittin’ Image show, be sure to do it. It will be well worth your time and money! They are excellent musicians and truly very funny. *Please accept our apologies for not being able to identify these gentlemen. Stu Berman

GARDEN CLUB Our next meeting is Saturday, March 14th. This year’s luncheon is: Tentatively reserved at Magnolia for Friday, March 27th. As a reminder, the Garden Club Luncheon is open to Garden Club members Only! Of course, if you have Family or Friends visiting, they are also welcome to come. What a GREAT time to join; dues are ONLY $5.00, and you would be part of the group that is responsible for: The Fashion Show, The Craft Fair and The Trash and Treasure. I promise, no one will force you to do any gardening. A sign-up sheet for the luncheon will be in the Clubhouse with all the details. As a heads up, this year’s Fashion Show is tentatively scheduled for Friday, November 20th, so please

mark your calendars. Lots of new people in the park. Ladies, have you ever thought about being a model? We need models for the November fashion show; it’s lots of fun and you get to wear the newest fashions. If interested, either join the club or contact me. Please take time to visit the Butterfly Garden. Linda and John Hoos continue to do such a great job. Did you know: If you look closely in the Butterfly Garden, you can see the larva on the various leaves of the special plants chosen for this reason and even get a glimpse of the pupa. All of the plants in the Butterfly Garden are chosen specifically for the butterflies needs in the different stages of their life – even the muddy fountain, since butterflies (mostly male butterflies)

get nutrients from the mud which they pass to the female thru mating. These nutrients help increase the chance of passing their genes to another generation. As Linda likes to say, “life is constantly going on in the Garden”. It’s a wonderful thought and we are lucky if we get to see it. Rachelle DellaRocca 239-322-6386

What to plant Annuals: Plant heat tolerant annuals for color such as crossandra, gazania, melampodium, and zinnia, that will last into fall. Bulbs: Plant gladiola corms 6” apart and 4” deep and stake as they grow. Plant caladiums for a showy tropical display all summer. Herbs: In addition to their culinary value, many herbs

are ornamental and attract butterflies to the garden. Vegetables: Warm season crops, such as sweet corn, cucumber, watermelon, and pepper, should be planted now for late spring harvest.

What to do Trees and shrubs: Prune when new growth begins after the end of the dormant season. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade but before new buds. Mulch: Renew or add mulch in landscape beds to reduce weeds and retain moisture. Fertilize lawns: If not done in February, fertilize lawns this month. Pests: Monitor landscape plants for insects, especially for the presence of aphids on tender new growth. Insects become more active during warm weather.

Trustworthy, respectful, compassionate The Crossings at Hancock is dedicated to fulfilling one mission: to provide a comfortable, safe and secure home for those who need assistance with the activities of daily living in a caring environment of dignity, respect and compassion.

With a foundation of individualized support and high quality health care services, encouragement of independence, emphasis on freedom of choice, support of individuality, and protection of privacy, our residents enjoy a superior quality of life than they would living alone.

Fertilize: palms and ornamental shrubs if not done last month. Choose a fertilizer based on each plant’s needs. Examine lawns for problems: Identify damaging insects and spot treat early to prevent widespread damage. Rule out cultural problems, such as irrigation failure, before treatment. Tropical and subtropical fruits: Add variety and interest to the landscape and table with exotic fruits. Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening Calendar available on-line.

CANADIAN CLUB Well, things are in full gear with everyone playing cards, shuffleboard, water aerobics, and bingo (your writer has been quite successful at this, winning three times in one night. I truly thought I would be asked to leave!) So much to do, so little time. When you read this, we will be starting to think about our return to the north. We have a number of new Canadians this year and it has been so much fun to meet them and share stories. The February dinner of stuffed chicken breasts prepared by the Sharp’s and Redgers was delicious. Thank you everyone for the salads, sides and desserts. And that homemade ice cream cake made by Anne was so yummy. Our March dinner is being hosted by Elaine & Peter who are supplying a fav northern meal of flank steak. A request is out for another meat entrée, so please let Dave Sharp, Patti Thompson or Brenda Redgers know what you can bring. Again, if we have missed any new Canadians please let them know about the March dinner. Looking forward to seeing everyone again for a social evening. We have an activities meeting in March to discuss events for the year 20202021, so if anyone has any ideas they want to be brought up please let us know. See you soon. Brenda Redgers

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB NEWS The year of 2020 keeps moving along swiftly. We are already into the third month of the first quarter. The Mid-Atlantic Social Club is meeting on Sunday, March 8th at the Isles of Punta Gorda Yacht Club for brunch around 11:30 AM. After enjoying a wonderful array of foods, the marina

MIDWEST CLUB NEWS On January 10th, the sports fans in the Midwest Club gathered for the first meeting of the New Year. Members showed their allegiance to their favorite teams with their colorful jerseys and showed off their football knowledge in a Trivia Game. Many participated in the football pool set up by Dale Holat. Thanks, Dale. The winners of the pool were: Rick Lubich, Bill Goodhue, Kent Hetzer, and Moe Chouinard. Congratulations! Our treasurer, Peggy Gamble, shared that through the many very generous donations of Midwest Club members to the bake sale, $770.00 was raised and given to Hearts and Homes for Veterans. Another $505.00 was sent to the Gabriel House at the holidays. Both organizations were very appreciative and amazed at the generosity of our club. As this article is being written, the Midwest Club is working on their Mardi Gras Party to be held February 21st. The Clubhouse will be festooned in purple, green, and gold and a game of Mardi Gras bead hot potato is being planned to help us pick a King and Queen of the Mardi Gras meeting. A game of Mardi Gras Bingo will also occur. The Midwest’s own chef, Bob Polenska, will be preparing Jambalaya with the help of his sous chefs: Rick Lubich, Spike Makia, Ron Mester, and Gale Pinelli. Desserts and Salads will be provided by our other talented cooks in the Midwest Club. We are also looking forward to our March meeting during which the Midwest Club will celebrate National Pie Month. More details on both of these meetings will be reported in the April issue of The Columns. You will just have to wait until then to learn who won the crowns for Mardi Gras and what mystery pies were served at the March meeting. Debbie Polenska Co-Secretary Continued on the next page

NEW ENGLAND CLUB

AS WE WELCOME SPRING, WE DON’T WANT YOU TO BRING A THING!!!

Saturday, March 21st, at 5:00 PM is our “Welcome Spring” Party and we will be having a great party! The Club will supply beer, wines and soda. On the Menu: Burgers on the grill, Potato salad and Penne a la Carol. Our favorite dessert of Hot Fudge Sundaes will be served. Very important to bring those coins. And raffles $$ of course. Sign-ups for this party, as always, are mandatory and the deadline is Saturday, March 14th. Dues must be paid to attend this party or you can pay them at the door for our late arriving New Englanders. Thank you to all the Club members who baked for our Fabulous Fifties Dance Party. Thanks to all of you, we had an impressive dessert buffet. Get your game face on!! Our final party, our Bon Voyage, will be on Saturday, April 11th, and it will be a sports-themed Pot Luck. More details to come on that. Hope to see all of you on Saturday, March 21st. Judy Machnicz

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB Welcome back to our Winter residents! The Computer Club has begun a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total

novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we start at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. The General topics cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, such as Windows, working with photos, multi-media, tablets, cell phones and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve
