“Amusement Parks of Our Youth”

A few days ago, a short video of our beloved “Lincoln Park” was sent to us. There it stood, abandoned, desolate, totally dilapidated…a broken eyesore. Instantly pulling at my heartstrings and putting me into a temporary melancholy mood. As I allowed myself to continue through it, the sadness was replaced by wonderful, happy memories. I don’t know whether this quote applies but all I could think of were the words “out of the ashes…” Suddenly, from some source within me, the eeriness and gloom of the video was replaced with beautiful sunshine, excitement and happiness surrounded every inch of the Midway. Families once again were spending precious time together. I’m betting that each of us have those special family memories, too! Do you remember a special amusement park of your youth and the excitement that overcame you as you entered the gate? From the moment that you stepped onto the Midway it seemed that all your senses were instantly put into motion. The sounds of excitable voices surrounding you, the laughter of the children as they ran pass you to get more tickets for their next ride. In the distance, the screaming of the voices coming from the giant roller coaster as they anticipated that first long drop!

How about those delicious smells coming from the Pavilion: clam cakes, French fries, popcorn, cotton candy, candied apples…just to name a few! Oh, so good! The Pavilion had long rows of picnic tables to sit and relax on, and a large stage to enjoy the day’s special performances. Everything from magic shows to big bands, a show for all ages to enjoy! Intro:

I’d like to happily report that we have kicked off our 2020-2021 season of the Creative Writer’s Workshop, in an innovative and roll-with-the pandemic kind of way. We are trying to meet outside for the time being at a location that works for golf cart gathering. We will likely continue in this fashion until it is deemed safe to resume our normal lifestyle. I hope to have new material to provide you with next month. For this month’s Tower, I went back through our submissions from 2019 - early 2020 and selected one that is timely from Jan Walimire. I hope you will enjoy.

After lunch we were once again ready to bolt like lightning, but that’s hard to do when your hand is locked into Mom’s, Dad’s, or one of your siblings. No one wanted to take the chance of having to be put into time out. We had been given “the talk” and promised not to stray. It was hard to be still when all that you could think of was going on those rides. Seemed like forever!

We had our favorites: The Comet Roller Coaster, the Merry-Go-Round, Ferris wheel, Dodge ‘m Cars, and the Scrambler were the ones we definitely couldn’t miss. Let’s not forget about the House of Mirrors and the Penny Arcade, where we bowled so hard to win tickets for all those treasures. You remember those, don’t you? The Arcade was usually our last stop before heading home but not before Mom had her fortune told. I can remember her placing the coin into the slot and suddenly Madame Zeta’s hands moved carefully over the cards, very slowly, finally pushing out Mom’s very own fortune along with her lucky numbers for the week. She would get such a kick out of that machine!

Somehow “amusement” doesn’t fully describe the whole experience one feels when we think back to our younger days and our overwhelming joy when our parents planned those special outings. As with each generation before us that same joy that I felt as a child was later to be seen in our children’s eyes. I’m sure our parents were revisiting and remembering their special childhood outings, as did our grandparents before them. The amusement parks back then were considered our “Disney” and those precious times shared with family will always take precedent over the sadness
