WHY IS GARDENING GOOD FOR SENIORS?

By Rosemary Eiden

Physically – gardening is an excellent low impact exercise that improves flexibility through stretching and bending. It promotes strengthening and endurance as well.

Mentally – the fresh air and sunshine that you get from just being outdoors is very helpful to reducing stress and anxiety. But in addition to just being outside, gardening provides a project that provides purpose which plays a significant role in improving one’s level of happiness and life satisfaction.

Gardening can help to improve not only physical but mental functioning as well – In a wonderful article in Psychology Today, author Sarah Rayner lists 10 benefits gardening provides for mental health: 1. Looking after plants gives us a sense of responsibility. 2. Gardening allows us to be nurturers. 3. Gardening keeps us connected to other living things. 4. Gardening helps us relax and let go. 5. Working in nature releases happy hormones. 6. Being amongst plants and flowers reminds us to live in the present moment. 7. Gardening reminds us of the cycle of life, and thus come to terms with that most universal of anxieties: death. 8. Some aspects of gardening allow us to vent anger and aggression… 9. …whilst others allow us to feel in control. 10. Last but not least, gardening is easy.

Is gardening good exercise?

Of course, gardening can be wonderful exercise but the amount of exercise anyone would get depends on how much they are able to do to begin with.

But what gardening does mostly for seniors is that it… • Gets them moving!

Del Tura Garden Club meetings have resumed!

• It’s functional exercise in that a task is being performed (you’re not just running on a treadmill here!) • It improves balance, sensory perception and flexibility. • The extra physical movements promote the release of endorphins and helps to strengthen muscles (including the heart).

Even if your are in a wheelchair, gardening can be performed with container gardens, raised beds and even indoors. Even from a wheelchair or seated position, the amount of exercise you are getting is much more than sitting in front of the television set.

I would recommend to do your gardening in the early morning or at dusk when the sun is not as harsh.

Protect Your Family from Long-term Care Costs

Like everyone, you want to remain physically and financially independent throughout your life. But if you lose some of this freedom, the last thing you’d want is to become a burden on your family. How can you keep this from happening? First of all, you need to be aware of the risk. Someone turning 65 today has almost a 70 percent chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you face that 70 percent likelihood. In reality, you have either a zero percent chance of requiring long-term care (you’ll never need it) or a 100 percent chance (you’ll definitely need it). Nonetheless, if you think you’ve got that zero percent chance, you’re taking a gamble – and it could be a big one, because long-term care is expensive. The median annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is over $102,000, according to Genworth, an insurance company. Other long-term care services, such as those provided by a home health care aide, also don’t come cheaply. Furthermore, you can’t count on Medicare paying all these costs – in fact, it would probably only cover a small portion of a nursing home stay and provide limited assistance for home health care. So, if you were financially unprepared for the expense of long-term care, the burden might fall on your loved ones. This could be a big financial challenge, in two ways.

First, if a family member had to become your caregiver, this individual might have to abandon a career, or at least substantially reduce their working hours. Not only would this result in a loss of income, but it could also lower the amounts that could be contributed to a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan.

Second, if your family members couldn’t leave their jobs or cut back on their hours, or they were simply unable to provide the type of long-term care you need, they might be forced to pay for a nursing home stay or home health care worker out of pocket. To avoid these outcomes, you have a couple of options: • Self-insure – You could conceivably “self-insure” against the costs of long-term care by devoting a portion of your investment portfolio specifically to this purpose. However, if at some point you require admission to a nursing home, it may require a significant commitment of your resources. • Purchase protection – Over the past decade or so, there’s been an increase in the types of long-term care protection vehicles available. These instruments vary widely in cost and in what they cover, but by choosing a protection option, you may greatly lower the financial risk you might face. By consulting with a financial professional, you should be able to find an arrangement that’s appropriate for your situation. Preserving your financial independence and helping protect that of your family should be a key financial goal.

And you can make progress toward accomplishing this by recognizing the potential cost of long-term care and taking steps to deal with it.

IT’S THAT WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

By Jan Walimire

It all begins with Thanksgiving. Inviting the guests. Buying the turkey and all the trimmings. Setting the table with those treasured holiday pieces. Preparing the “feast”. And sitting down with precious family members to a meal filled with love and…. memories of holidays past.

I just can’t even begin this holiday season without remembering so many others. What first comes to mind is going to Grandma’s house. All through my growing-up years that was always the plan. My mother had four sisters and they were all great cooks! Yummmm… corn, homemade noodles, yeast rolls, mashed potatoes and pies! Now, that was a feast!

There were several of us, about twenty-six, give or take a few here and there, gathered around several tables, scattered throughout the kitchen, dining room, and living rooms. And always in the middle of all of it was my Grandpa. He was so full of mischief! All of us grandkids gathered around him as if he was the “pied piper”. We couldn’t wait to see what crazy scheme he had planned that year!

Of course, we all remember “Injun Joe” - Grandpa’s version of the scary guy who lived in the basement. He’d turn the lights off while we were down there and then proceeded to scare us half to death! What fun we had during those family gathering times! And when I see my cousins today, we talk about those memories as if they had just happened! Even today, I cannot go into the dark basement without thinking of “Injun Joe”!

Grandma was a beautiful piano player. She would play and we would sing every single Christmas carol known to man. I’m sure it didn’t sound like much to passersby, but to us, we made the most beautiful music ever! The grandkids would be squeezed up and down the stairs with everyone else grabbing a seat anywhere they could find…in chairs, sofas, on the floor, or on someone else’s lap. Precious, sweet memories.

As we begin the holiday season this year, I’m praying that my grandkids will hide treasured memories in their hearts for the years to come. May they look back on these days with Gram and Papa with smiles and laughter and hearts full of joy! May they remember precious family times with those who loved them unconditionally.
